Hi, Luke. I'm a life member of the MBPM, currently on phase 4, level 23. I've been with Youse for about 9 or 10 months, and I have learned lots, but not enough yet to have a basic conversation. While I agree that reading by learning characters is absolutely necessary after learning pronunciation, I believe students would get a boos of ongoing confidence if we learned basic conversational mandarin after learning pronunciation and before learning characters. Jumping into learning characters immediately after the pronunciation mastery course is OK. But you did have the advantage of learning conversational mandarin through Pilmsleur before anything else. This gave you confidence and an adrenalin boost. On top of that, you actually went back to China to learn in full. I did not do the Speak and Repeat Kickstart Mandarin Course after learning pronunciation because that course became available after i started the MBP component. I'm now doing it in tandem with the MBP, but that is hard in terms of time management. I'm elven tempted to pause the MBP to dedicate my time to the kickstart module and finish it before I continue with MBP, if only because after 9 or 10 month I can hardly have a basic conversation in Mandarin. I know the ground up work from MBP will pay off eventually, but not being able to do basic conversations at this stage can be disappointing and demoralising. Don't get me wrong. I love the course and am chugging al9ng with it, but doing some self enquiry on the state of my Mandarin learning, I have concluded that after learning pīnyīn pronunciation, the n3xt step before learning characters should be learning basic conversation without characters, and then do the MBP. Anyway, than you for your video and for this wonderful opportunity to learn Mandarin in possibly one of the most effective ways to do so. ❤

I have bought the Phrases Vault, but will use it in conjunction with the MBP, as they are linked. That’s why I bought it. As for doing the hours, I’m with you. I do my reviews in the morning before I leave for work, and I do my studying in the evenings. I listen to immersion audios during the day at work, and I read elementary materials on DUChinese and now the Chairman Bao’s materials. I took a Mandarin minicourse at uni but switched to japanese which is my main target language. But your videos are the best out there, I apply the advice on my own goals and will definitely learn Mandarin when "sort of" mastered japanese. Keep it up!!

Hi Luke, thanks for this video. My native language is spanish and I learnt english, french and italian. I was kinda terrified in choosing chinese as my 4th foreigner language (was trying to choose between German, Arabic and Chinesse) but thanks to you I've realised that the process is not different from learning other foreign language; I feel totally related to your journey in learning chinesse. I made lot of mistakes learning english (my first foreign language) and I struggled a lot. When I learnt french I didn't make the same mistakes, I had already a path to follow and my 3er language was even better, so much easy. For me worked really well first learning few basic vocabulary and then full immersion. At the begining I only understood barely 5% of the video or movie, and little by little my comprehension started to increase and it's really motivating beeing aware of your achivements. For example, I watched a Netflix serie called Lupin in french, and I've seen that serie about 5 times, and each time it was a novelty for me because I was able to understand things that I didn't catch the previous time. I tell myself things like "congratulations Liz, now you understood about 80%". I do love Harry Potter, and I read and listened to almost the 7 books in all my languages, I don't get tired of reading/listening them and, as I know the story (almost by heart now) is easier for me identifying and asociating new words and expressions. It will surely help me with chinesse too. I'm going to continue doing my pre-learning research of chinesse, and in about few weeks I'll be joining Blue Print. can you make a video for beginner chinese learners; regarding the usage of zhongwhen, (Chinese), Han Yu (Also apparently chinese), and poothonghwa, (Mandarin) Thanks!
Zhong wen is referred to Chinese language in general, also between Chinese people. Han Yu is the Chinese language, a bit more specific, like you could say I learn Chinese, in this case is han yu; while you know Chinese, you'd say Zhong wen.
Never too early, as long as you're okay with not understanding much. The immersion packs you get from level reviews (level 13 onwards) are the best for early immersion, as well as watching Mandarin cartoons (e.g. 小猪佩奇)
Hi Luke, I went to school in China for 6 years and left China in 2012. I passed my HSK level 4 at the end of my 1st year learning mandarin. I was fluent at the time but have not really used in years. Phil says it's more important to get more more input/messages in a certain time, so don't analyse every word or sentence you don't know. Should I still make flashcards then from the words/characters I didn't know when reading something and study those (repeat those) or just keep reading as much as possible cause doing flashcards and (practising them out of context) also takes time? Isn't making flashcards and practising them from the words i don't know from a article or book also a bit of over analysing and time consuming. I hope my question is clear.

You'll even have to learn characters and words if you want to master Chinese, as just listening and speaking will give you limited mileage. Fluency in Chinese requires learning characters and there's no away around it.

Never too early, as long as you're okay with not understanding much. The immersion packs you get from level reviews (level 13 onwards) are the best for early immersion, as well as watching Mandarin cartoons (e.g. 小猪佩奇)
