eventhough german and chinese are very distant and different its fun to see that you have the same ü sound in pronounciation and letter what a coincidance

I'm already frustrated😂 it all sound similar...but the challenge is acceptable! I love it! Same with Nihongo..you need vowels at the end of every consonant..

Thanks. Another questions Why just "j", "q" and "x" are following this rule with ü ? Is there another rule with "lü" ? and ...the other consonants why Not play with ü ? Should you do more examples and exercises with these rules please ?
Actually, it is because "j q x y + u" cannot form a syllable, but "ü" can do it with the four initials , so "u" and "ü" do not need to be distinguished from each other when going with "j q x y", so the two dots are removed directly. For other initials like "l", it can form "lu" and "lü", so it still needs to be distinguished by adding or removing a little hat (the 2 dots) on "u".
Dear Andy, I'm Reza a subscriber to your channel from Bangladesh. From your previous lesson I came to learn about a sentence....."I have been waiting for an hour=wo deng le yi ge xiaoshi le." But if the sentence would be like."I have been waiting for you since morning" what would be in Chinese? Give me a reply please.
Hi Andy!, your channel is superb! you explain everything so well. I have a question related to 'ch' and 'q' sound, how to differentiate between them because what I learnt is that ch is a sound like in 'church' and q sound is the same but a little aspirated like 'ch-h' but when I listen you, both letters sound same, like a little aspirated 'ch-h', so how to differentiate between them?
Thank you for your good feedback😊 Check out this video for CH👇 ruclips.net/video/LH3yhKGg3lk/видео.html And for ch, you can also try TR in TREE while q like the ch in cheap. You have to listen more to tell the difference because those counterparts are not exactly equivalent.

I am Russian native. In russian, we have soft and hard consonants. It seems to me, that J Q X is the soft consonants. And U with umlaut is soft too. In russian, after the soft consonants goes only soft vowels. That's why we don't need two dots.
I am a HSK student and still struggle with the pronuntiation of "q". It feels like the range goes from a very thick, "ch-like" as spoken by northenders to a "x" mostly pronounced in the south. Is there any rule of thumb i should follow? Thank you for this great channel!!!!.

Actually, it is because "j q x y + u" cannot form a syllable, so "u" and "ü" do not need to be distinguished from each other, so the two dots are removed directly. For example, initial "l" can form "lu" and "lü", so it still needs to be distinguished by adding a little hat (the 2 dots). 其实是因为j q x y + u 没有办法组成音节,u和ü不用作区分了,所有就直接去掉两点。像是 l 可以组成lu和lü,所以还是要戴帽(加点)区分

You explanation for u after j q x makes sense, thank you. But there are also words with pinyin jiu, qiu, xiu. So how are they different from ju, qu, xu ? Thank you for any help.
I guess you've never heard most of my answers to those questions about "WHY" in Chinese because common Chinese textbooks and teachers just let you know " it's a rule in Chinese"
For j q x + u without the dots, the phonological reason is that you can never have j q x coexist with 'u' so that's why when ju qu xu are written they are pronounced as 'jü qü xü' its even impossible to pronounce them as 'ju qu xu'.
That's correct. I would argue this rule makes it inconsistent; makes unnecessary extra rule for new students that they have to memorise j q x are actually paired with ü, not u. Although we can argree that ü is unavailable or difficult to type in many keyboard format.
Oof, this video hits a lil different for a British northerner. When we say jeep, cheap and sheep we tend to purse our lips a lot and raise the end of our tongues so the xi sounds more like shi when we compare it to sheep, and therefore we also have the same more open mouth shape for ji and qi :'). I wish having different accents didn't make things so fiddly ಥ‿ಥ.
Even some native Chinese from southern part of China find them difficult. They tend to make j q x into z c s. Sometimes we make fun of them: 洗Xi - to wash becomes 死Si - to die.
That's just a joke. Most of the time we can understand each other well like what mentioned in this video about tones👇 ruclips.net/video/BGm3ftiEjTQ/видео.html
🟢I likw your teaching is easy to ynderstand. You are the most.Teacher Laoshi , Xie Xie . How are you teacher .? Please becareful your health . Wishind you all Family.
...and there must not be a "tü" syllable either because if it were to be pronounced properly, there would automatically be an i added there as well, which replicates the sound that "qu" makes (I might be wrong, but that's my understanding of it)
I am having trouble to spot a difference between he and she, yes the characters are different but the sounds are the same, how can i recognize when it is he and when she ? example: ta shi lao shi. So what gender is the teacher in the sentence ?
My teacher explained that they don't have the umlaut because they can't be paired with normal u sound. qu is pronounced with the ü sound, not with the normal one. But there will never be a word with qu pronounced with the normal u. That makes sense since the umlaut there might be too much, and you should just remove it, and remember this rule. There will never be j/q/x/y (I think also y) paired with a normal u sound, only ü sound.
But one thing is certain. Each language has its own specification in some pronunciations but those are similar or considered to be the same in another language.
l didn't say “X” is pronounced as Sh in Sheep exactly, but the most similar one in English. Because that's a counterpart in English but not an equivalent.
According to my chinese teacher, ü umlaut is removed to make easy to type. But the correct phoneme should be ü, not u. Except in Lü 率 iit can not be written Lu路 , because there will be LU syllable.
You're either teaching a straw student, or teaching students to be straw students. First up, you're making the ü letter seem as if it's a common part of Pinyin. It's not, it's only something that you see in lü/nü (a grand total of 2) syllables to distinguish them from lu/nu syllables. Almost obviously one of the first things a Chinese learner learns is the putting together of initials and finals. So it's at that point they're taught that ju, qu and xu (plus yu) are pronounced with pursed lips in contrast to zhu, chu and shu with the normal u sound. It's *after* you learn how common initials and finals combine that you learn that ü can make lü or nü. Nobody should be trying to add ü to other initials, so why suggest otherwise? Let your students learn well so we can all be well.
With your logic, I am sorry to know that all the native Chinese students would become straw students because the rule about ü is taught in every Chinese elementary school in China.
I am not making ü seem like a common part of Pinyin because it is. There is a ü group of finals in Chinese Pinyin. And I have to say you missed another two syllables: lüe and nüe.
What's more, ü is an independent basic simple final not just to be in contrast to so-called "normal" u sound. We just see it more often without umlaut in the syllables " ju jue juan jun, qu que quan qun, xu xue xuan xun and yu yue yuan yun" compared to "lü, lüe, nü, nüe".
I agree that "Nobody should be trying to add ü to other initials" because it's wrong to do that. Thank you for your concern about my students. So far, they are learning well and hope you guys are all well.
Okay, a couple of rare extra syllables but at any rate I'm not trying to score points. Plus isn't 鋝 the only character that can come out of those extra syllables? Ü is a common phoneme but (as a letter) its usage in *Pinyin* is just after l or n, so not as common as a student might get to thinking... It's usage as a *phoneme* can (only) come after l, n, j, q or x, which is much more common. To each their own. But I think, for CFL learning, a lot of students would be happy to avoid (because they can!) learning about spelling rules and just appreciate that vowels can change depending on the initial it's matched to (e.g. i-in-si ≠ i-in-ni nor i-in-bi etc; u-in-qu ≠ u-in-pu, u-in-gu etc). Though 1 in a billion might ask for it, it's not really practical to learn Chinese as an L2 in the same way as a Chinese child would be educated. The one advantage of learning specifically about the ü final *phoneme* is that if you ever use "the other" phonetic system (and keyboard input method), Zhuyin Fuhao, you will actually need to select this phoneme every time to make words like 去 or 女 (the latter is often done on a roman keyboard with nv).
You are very good at teaching pinyin and tones, and I enjoy watching your programs very much. However, your explanation on the missing of two dots on top of u that follow j q x is misleading. Students would likely pronounce ju, qu, xu, as jiu 纠, qiu秋, xiu休 if they follow your explanation. Please let us know if you have a better way to explain it, otherwise just tell us that it is a ‘rule’ as told by your kindergarten teacher long time ago.
It's just my hypothetical answer and actually it works well with my students. My elementary school teacher told us to remember it in a funny way: The chicken(j)will eat the two eyes of the fish(ü) when they meet.

My theory about the two little dots is : they run out of ink! ha, ha...
You are too sweet teacher.thank you
Love your videos
eventhough german and chinese are very distant and different its fun to see that you have the same ü sound
in pronounciation and letter
what a coincidance
Yeah. And it's easier for Germans to learn Chinese pronunciation because of that.
Great, Andy! I like your logic. Well explained the 'i+u' combos. It mkes a perfect sense to me (and I don't care about the academical correctness)
Я ничерта не понимаю по английски, но пытаюсь учить китайским сама, просто по фану, но мне так нравится слушать ваши уроки, не понимая двух языков, я все равно улавливаю суть ваших обьяснений. Спасибо за урок!!!!

I did. They are in Pronunciation 01. And compound finals would be in Pronunciation 04.

Good question!
Wo cong shangwu deng ni dao xianzai.
I from morning wait for you untill now.
Thank you for your good feedback😊
Check out this video for CH👇

And for ch, you can also try TR in TREE while q like the ch in cheap. You have to listen more to tell the difference because those counterparts are not exactly equivalent.
so what the difference in pronunciation between CH and q?
Good question!
The difference lies in the tongue position. You can find it out after watching this video👇

Very good explained. Thanx
I am Russian native. In russian, we have soft and hard consonants. It seems to me, that J Q X is the soft consonants. And U with umlaut is soft too. In russian, after the soft consonants goes only soft vowels. That's why we don't need two dots.
And we have soft and hard vowels. Я Ё Ю Е - that's soft. А О У И Э - that's hard.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge :)
Another, Indo European language,
sub group, Celtic, also uses these
sounds, especially Irish and Scottish Gaelic.
Wow I totally understand!! Thank you:)
I am a HSK student and still struggle with the pronuntiation of "q". It feels like the range goes from a very thick, "ch-like" as spoken by northenders to a "x" mostly pronounced in the south. Is there any rule of thumb i should follow?

Actually, it is because "j q x y + u" cannot form a syllable, so "u" and "ü" do not need to be distinguished from each other, so the two dots are removed directly. For example, initial "l" can form "lu" and "lü", so it still needs to be distinguished by adding a little hat (the 2 dots).
其实是因为j q x y + u 没有办法组成音节,u和ü不用作区分了,所有就直接去掉两点。像是 l 可以组成lu和lü,所以还是要戴帽(加点)区分
Do we say "and" and "drink" the same way in Chinese language?
(On different screen now)
For initials it is the same in Romanian. We need a vowel after them.
How do you say Jamaica in chinese

You explanation for u after j q x makes sense, thank you. But there are also words with pinyin jiu, qiu, xiu. So how are they different from ju, qu, xu ? Thank you for any help.
No problem. Jiu qiu & xiu are abbreviations and the full spellings are Jiou qiou & xiou. You can see the differences clearly now
@@AskAndy Thank you! I never heard that before, so I need to investigate.

@@AskAndy thanks for your reply 🙏
@@AskAndy I'm sorry but where in that video is the difference addressed? I'm not seeing it.
Do you say "and" and "drink" the same way in Chinese?
For j q x + u without the dots, the phonological reason is that you can never have j q x coexist with 'u' so that's why when ju qu xu are written they are pronounced as 'jü qü xü' its even impossible to pronounce them as 'ju qu xu'.
Just wrote similar comment 😅
Gotcha!
Don't worry that much, my friend.
Even some native Chinese from southern part of China find them difficult. They tend to make j q x into z c s. Sometimes we make fun of them: 洗Xi - to wash becomes 死Si - to die.
That's just a joke. Most of the time we can understand each other well like what mentioned in this video about tones👇

...and there must not be a "tü" syllable either because if it were to be pronounced properly, there would automatically be an i added there as well, which replicates the sound that "qu" makes (I might be wrong, but that's my understanding of it)
I am having trouble to spot a difference between he and she, yes the characters are different but the sounds are the same, how can i recognize when it is he and when she ? example: ta shi lao shi. So what gender is the teacher in the sentence ?
Good question!
Actually we can't tell TA is he or she when we are talking about someone.
That's why l say Chinese is a contextual language, especially when it comes to speaking.
But we can see the difference when TA is written: 他 he & 她 She
Another thing, we only write in characters. So we can tell the difference from those two characters. But it doesn't work for Pinyin.
Im a native spanish speaker and we have this ü letter to indicate that the u letter is pronounced in some cases
Wow those tricks help a lot
I learned so much
already Andy xiexie ni
I was told chinese don't have voiced consonants, but aspirated and non-aspirated, so why do I hear voiced sounds B or D. Please explain.
😊👍
If “X” is pronounced as Sh as in Sheep then how “Sh” is pronounced ?
X - Siva
Sh - Shiva
S - Saval
(Please note we have 3 letters in indian languages)
Sorry that l don't speak lndian language.
But one thing is certain. Each language has its own specification in some pronunciations but those are similar or considered to be the same in another language.
l didn't say “X” is pronounced as Sh in Sheep exactly, but the most similar one in English. Because that's a counterpart in English but not an equivalent.
You can check out this video to know SH in Chinese:👇
ruclips.net/video/LH3yhKGg3lk/видео.html
You will know both S & SH in Mandarin in the video l mentioned.
According to my chinese teacher, ü umlaut is removed to make easy to type. But the correct phoneme should be ü, not u. Except in Lü 率 iit can not be written Lu路 , because there will be LU syllable.
It cannot be the only reason because the Pinyin system was created in 1958 and Chinese people knew nothing about typing then
率 is not the only exception. I talked about that in detail in this video👇
ruclips.net/video/QseaTbeUBxQ/видео.html
great
我的老師說 since j,q,x always go with ü we can confidently omit the umlaut.
What do you mean when you say "Think about Chinglish" ? Thanks for you Video.
Is Xi same as English She or See?
Not the same just similar
Do u pronounce Q. As. CH. OR. T
Closer to Ch in English
But ü in Pinyin is written as the letter v.
Not written but typed as letter v
@@AskAndy
Yes that's what I meant 😂
If you want to say "mechanical chicken " ??
Would it be jī jī ??

lt is not simply combine two syllables to make a new phrase.
"Mechanical chicken" can be 机器鸡jiqi ji 😊

Very funny to hear the Do Re Mi La Ti because Mandarin don't have S+i pronounce as [i] but as Epsilon
It is very useful lesson!
