I’m 73 years old and started learning Chinese 9 months ago. I speak several languages fluently and have always begun my language learning journey almost exclusively by listening. Every language is complex and it is impossible to memorize all the rules of grammar and tones. As you said, we need to learn languages like children do - it takes a lot of time but actually not a lot of cognitive effort. Native speakers are always amazed at my very natural pronunciation when I speak Japanese, Spanish, German, Russian or Swedish. I tell them you don’t have to be super smart to speak any language - in fact many people who are much smarter than me have horrible pronunciation because they focus to much on learning “correctly” from books instead of acquiring language naturally like children. I am confident my Chinese pronunciation will be as beautiful as my other languages. Tones don’t scare me.
Good for you!I am 76 now and Ive been studying Chinese since 2015. A lot of young people don't want to spend time on pronunciation practice, so your advice and Andy's is great - just listen and sing along with the music! I am non-native fluent in Russian and Spanish. I have heard teachers of those languages speak with accents, so it is no shame to mispronounce something. But if they enjoy the language experience, eventually they will try to work on their pronunciation. But they don't have to if they are already forming sentences that native speakers understand! Most people will never lose their mother tongue accent, I am told. That's why it's important to make sure you are born and raised in the country that speaks your favorite foreign language!🙂
I started learning Chinese with an online class about 1month and always worry about tones. After watching this video I feel so relieve and encourage to learn chinese more❤
I have to thank you for this video it’s what we really need to hear as chinese learners , everybody tells us that we won’t make it if we couldn’t make the tone right which is sounds impossible and even makes us feel disappointed of our selves but now i have another idea which is going to make me learn it with out being disappointed in my self
No problem. Thank you for your good feedback😊 Check out this video to know more about my original tricks for Chinese pronunciation👇 ruclips.net/video/IoqGFfijuNw/видео.html
I've been learning chinese for 4 years. I'm always scared to talk though. I think I should focus more on words instead of tones and if I practiced them well enough, my tones will be correct and visible anyways. Or at least I think so. Thank You for this video 🌻

@@AskAndy Hi Andy. This video absolutely vindicates Stephen Krashen's 'Acquistion method'; through 'Comprehensible Input' (in this case; listening), but also free Voluntary Reading (FVR). I'm trying to improve my Chinese, and I'm teaching English using Stephen Krashen's colleague; Beniko Mason's method of 'Story Listening' and 'Guided Self Selected Reading' (GSSR). From my experience, it's a far more effective and efficient way to learn language, and rather than being boring, it's an incredibly interesting way to learn a second language. Everyone loves stories.
Great video! I started learning Chinese a bit more than a year ago and at the beginning, I was tutored by a native Chinese. My first teacher never taught me the tones, only how to pronounce the words itself. People now tell me I have very good pronunciation, but I have great trouble with textbook exercises, which require marking the tone. I know how to pronounce a word correctly, but I certainly have to think a bit before I can determine the exact tone I am using. xD Also from many Chinese I've heard that words you stress in the sentence is as equally or even more important than getting the tones (and when you don't know the tone, better say it in the neutral (5th) tone, instead of trying to remember the correct one).
By the way, you can also SHARE my video or channel with your friends. Thank you in advance❗️ And they are going to be grateful to you for helping them learn Chinese😊
Thank you for this very helpful video. Boost my confidence in speaking Chinese. I'm always scared to say the wrong tones. But now Chinese language is a contextual language....
Thank you so much sir. You have said it all and You are the best teacher i have ever see in teaching Chinese language. Am benign to like Chinese now, to know it, to speak and understand it too like never before. More grace and God bless you. Watching you from china.
Wow!!! this really lifts some weight off my shoulders. I have been afraid of the wrong pronunciation because of the tones, but I will still do my best when talking Mandarin though!! Thank you Andy.

Languages are wonderful, and making mistakes is human. I once was speaking beginner German to a lady in Hamburg. I wanted to ask her how she was feeling as she had told me she was sick. (ich bin krank!) I thought I did this quite well. Simple, basic. But later I found I had said I hope I can feel you better. Of course, she understood me, but we have to laugh. I am beginning to learn a little Chinese. I will love the mistakes as I progress if I continue. Thank you Andy for a good program.

Thank you Andy, a great teacher. Don't know pinyin, learned traditional chinese, can speak a little, read a few words but can't write, wrong stroke. Learn a lot from you . Am Chinese Malaysian, only know English, malay , Fuchien and Cantonese

Thank you so much for these videos, my mother tongue is spanish, second language is english and I’m learning chinese, I find the listening way too hard, mostly when chinese people speak fast, but I’m glad that you explained that my second concern is not a huge deal, sometimes I watch videos in spanish because of certain tones are the same in spanish so its easier to understand, thank you again Andy and keep up the good work.

Great video with great advise. It is so good to hear someone say the same thing I have been saying for the past year. Tones are important but concentrate more on the sentence and people will understand even if you speak with the incorrect tones. I am soo happy you said this Andy.

i can definitely feel the thing about being too shy to speak out loud. my chinese friend was surprised one day when i told her i can actually speak a bit, but am definitely not fluent yet, and started speaking to me in chinese and i understood most of it but couldnt answer it since i had never practiced out loud in my life! not even when im alone do i feel comfortable enough to say it TwT luckily shes been teaching me and seems to be quite pleased with the result
my husband is Chinese so much pressure on me to learn it I really want to, I like learning languages but the tones are really hard makes me want to quit but I met once a friend of my husband who lives in Hong Kong he understood very well what I was trying to say even with my messy Pronunciation and messy tones. thank you 🙏😊
Yes I find it very helpful. Thanks Andy, I’m really new to learning Mandarin Chinese and I’m actually quite terrified. There are so many videos lying around on RUclips on how to perfect the language and some of them are quite intimidating, but your video helps me a lot and gives the motivation and courage to learn more. Hope I can make good progress by the end of this year. Cheers👍🏻

Thanks for this video, and I agree with you about that even when you don't speak using the correct tones you can be able to communicate with Chinese people because of that context, what it doesn't mean that we won't never pay attention to tones, but if we're beginners should focus more on FLUENCY...

I learned Spanish on my own and I kind of feel like the tones will be like stress was in Spanish, just a little more extreme. Like the tones, stress can determine meaning. Like extrañará vs extrañara Extrañará would mean "he will miss" (future tense) "la extrañará", "he will miss her". But extrañara is talking about hypothesis and is a deeper gramatical topic. But you would use it like "me dijo que no la extrañara" "she told me not to miss her". But to a native English speaker this concept of stress changing words isn't as readily apparent at first. It's something that you realize eventually, though.

Can you elaborate on how. For example, did you use any apps or online programs? If so, we’re they free to use? Would you be willing to list your resources? I tried learning Spanish in high school but the teacher was very mean and didn’t want to help anyone who struggled, so didn’t learn how to speak it or read it in sentences. I only learned a few words and phrases. I have a hard time with words being male vs female and have an even harder time putting sentences together bc the grammar is so different and it’s hard for me to remember the grammar differences and pick the grammar apart as well as rearranging the words, especially when it’s in my head and not on paper. I’m sure I could just do an internet search for free programs and such but it’s always helpful to get suggestions by those who are self taught if you are trying to self teach. In your example, it’s hard for me to distinguish between all the different ways to say that word. Like, for example, depending on which way you use the word Extrañar (to miss), the meanings are different. If you add an a to Extrañ (Extraña), it means to surprise. If you add an o (Extraño), it means to miss; if you add an é (Extrañe), it means to be surprised. You can also add aron (Extrañaron - to banish). Please note that the examples I posted came from a random online translator site and different sites may translate differently, which is another reason why it’s hard to self teach. There are so many different ways to speak and write just that one word, that it’s hard to keep track and remember, and that makes it so complicated for me.
Thanks so much, I found the answer for my question on the Chinese tone in this video :) cause I worried too much when made a wrong tone lol. Now I feel confident in speaking Chinese again. Thanks again, i’m looking forward to the new trips....

I want to master my tones and speak as well as possible and I'm not going to treat this video like a permission to slack off and neglect this aspect of Chinese, but it did take some pressure off of me. It sure feels good to hear it's ok to make mistakes when most of the teachers online, as well as students themselves, make it seem like it's the worst crime to mess up your tones!

I have a question. It is about "Nice to meet you." What is the correct arrangement of words is it (ren shi ni hen gao xing) or (hen gao xing ren shi ni). Or maybe they are both correct and can be used interchangeably? Thank you
Both are right, my friend. You can use them interchangeably. But "Hen gaoxing renshi ni" is more often used because of the influence from English, l think.

Think about typing Chinese in pinyin. Nowadays, you can't input the tones even if you want to; but the computer program almost always gives you the correct character. Native speakers certainly process Chinese just as well as the computer. So if you speak to them without tones at all, it will sound funny, but the Chinese speaker will almost certainly understand what you mean to say anyway.

The birthday song part is confusing because both versions sound the same to me but he said the singing sounds different?? I don’t hear any difference. Languages are so hard for me. Maybe I’m a bit tone deaf? I can hear the difference in the fish and rain example but not in the birthday song one. I’m not actually trying to learn Chinese bc I can’t even learn Spanish, which is supposed to be the second easiest language to learn, and my memory is bad which makes it even harder, but I’m curious about different languages and would love to be multi-lingual. These videos started popping up on my feed because I sometimes watch Chinese dramas (if they have subtitles). I doubt I will ever be able to visit China, so learning the language would only really benefit me when watching Chinese videos, listening to Chinese music, etc. It really would be helpful if I learned the language because some dramas don’t have subtitles. I think his videos are helpful, even to those who are tone deaf. It’s great that he is assuring people that it’s not a big deal if they don’t get the tone just right, but for those who really don’t like getting the tone wrong (like perfectionists for example), being tone deaf (any degree) is frustrating.
@@AskAndy Thank you for your response. I really appreciate you taking the time to do so. I will have to watch/listen to the video multiple times bc it’s still really hard for me, and that will take several days. It’s also hard for me to concentrate and my memory is bad due to health issues so I will try my best. I also get confused regarding n’s because I’ve found that sometimes n’s are pronounced and sometimes they seem silent (I sometimes watch Chinese dramas and noticed that while watching them). Is that the case or am I just not hearing it when I should be? Chinese, Korean, and Spanish are three languages I’d love to learn but I have a hard time with Spanish alone and that’s supposed to be the second easiest language to learn while Chinese is supposed to be the hardest language to learn. ☹️ I’m very impressed with multilingual people. You are an excellent instructor though, even if I don’t quite understand everything. Thank you ☺️

Congratulations! 😍😍😍
Thank you for leaving your journey for language learning . It's inspiring.
Wow 😊👏👏 hats off to you 🙏. You have inspired me 🙏

I know how to pronounce a word correctly, but I certainly have to think a bit before I can determine the exact tone I am using. xD
Also from many Chinese I've heard that words you stress in the sentence is as equally or even more important than getting the tones (and when you don't know the tone, better say it in the neutral (5th) tone, instead of trying to remember the correct one).
You learnt Mandarin like a native Chinese!👍
You are talented in learning languages and that's why you can tell which tone from your own pronunciation.
That's true! lt's even more important to stress certain words in a sentence.

I laughed a lot when you Andy explained the tones based on "Zhu ni shengri kuaile". It gave me such a Freedom Feeling. Thanks!

Like extrañará vs extrañara
Extrañará would mean "he will miss" (future tense) "la extrañará", "he will miss her".
But extrañara is talking about hypothesis and is a deeper gramatical topic. But you would use it like "me dijo que no la extrañara" "she told me not to miss her".
But to a native English speaker this concept of stress changing words isn't as readily apparent at first. It's something that you realize eventually, though.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, my friend!

There is something invisible but more important than tones. Check out this video to know more: ruclips.net/video/IoqGFfijuNw/видео.html

You are right sir even though wrong tone still they will understand it depends on the situation☺and conversation

In this sentence: 学中文让我开心, 写汉字让我开心。Is the comma in the middle necessary or it can be without comma like this: 学中文让我开心写汉字让我开心。Which one is correct or both can be allowed? Thank you.
Actually, it is not correct to make a sentence like that.
You can make it into one sentence: 学中文和写汉字让我开心。
Or with 也 as a conjunction: 学中文让我开心,写汉字也让我开心。

You gave me a hope , my tones are horrible hahahaha
Good to know that. You can check out this video to know more about the secret of Chinese pronunciation:ruclips.net/video/IoqGFfijuNw/видео.html
Nice explanation dear. xei xei . Younis from Jordan
Bu keqi, wode pengyou!

Thank you for your comment. I guess you can hear the difference in this video:

Thank you ☺️
😂i love this presentation
