    Analyzing Mark Zuckerberg Chinese & 2 Chinese dialects How to improve Chinese speaking & Chinese pronunciation Learn Chinese
    How well did Mark Zuckerberg speak Mandarin?
    Why English speakers don’t sound like native Chinese?
    How to improve your Chinese pronunciation & speaking?
    I shared 3 Chinese learning tips for you to improve your Chinese pronunciation and Chinese speaking.
    When you learn Chinese, your Chinese teacher probably tells you at the very beginning: You must speak Mandarin with correct tones otherwise people couldn’t understand you which makes tones intimidating. But that’s not true! I also analyzed 2 Chinese dialects(Mandarin accent) to show you Chinese tones are important but not that important. Stress and rhythm are also important. That’s why we could understand Mark Zuckerberg’s Chinese although he spoke with the wrong tones. You are going to know more about Chinese pronunciation and Chinese speaking skills after watching this video.

    The way you analyze the structures and give more examples or correct the mistakes in a very professional way motivates me a lot. It is the first time I saw a Chinese teacher explaining the stress in the second s[yllable. That was my mistake and I thought I would not improve my pronunciation ever. Now I understand what the problem was. 非常感谢 :)

    This is great. I love watching analysis of English speakers speaking Chinese like videos of John Cena. Besides being inspirational, it helps me be more aware of the mistakes I make as a native English speaker. But I got stuck as I didn’t know what to be aware of just knew I was making the same mistakes. This video helps direct my efforts. Thank you! Can’t wait to see more.

    Part of sounding more like a native speaker is embracing the culture. I’m black and learning Chinese. I watch a lot of Chinese programming so I can understand the culture and hear the language. I love history and watch a lot of documentaries on Chinese history. I speak to my Chinese coworker so she can correct me. She was born and raised in China and I appreciate her help. I’m not sure outside of his wife and making money that Zuckerberg cares about Chinese culture.

    Wow this was incredibly helpful!!! I've been trying to learn for awhile. I've thought about how we learn languages....and I think something that would be helpful for many learners is to read out loud with a native speaker correcting the tones as they speak. And I always ask for people to correct me in speaking...but many times the person will be shy about that and let the mistake go.

    I’ve just now found your channel. Your teaching skill is excellent. I will recommend your channel to other learners.
    I am an ABC (American-born Chinese). I moved to China for a number of years. Almost every time I said nihao to someone, they would ask, 你是哪儿的人?(Where are you from?) I didn’t know why they would ask that. Was it my tones? Hard to get the tones wrong for nǐhǎo. After about three years or so, I realized that it might be because Chinese natives don’t say nihao. They just say, ng! Do you think that’s true?

      Thank you for your good feedback and you can find the anwer about the Chinese greetings in this video:

    • @judyh3017
      @judyh3017 2 года назад

      @@AskAndy I had already watched that video, which by the way is excellent. You said it’s OK to greet people by saying, nǐhǎo. So it seems the reason Chinese natives respond with, “你是哪儿的人?” might be because they already observed that I am not a native Chinese; so since I initiated a greeting, they took the opportunity to confirm that or to find out more. Anyway, I didn’t mind that the native Chinese knew right away I am a foreigner, because that made it easier to start conversations.

      That may be the difference between language teachers and linguists. Language teachers teach you the content (pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar which are WHAT) and then you need to "practice makes perfect" while linguists study languages and let you know WHY and HOW so that you can learn better and faster.

    As a language teacher the American, you are correct. The westerner worries too much about tone but it is not that important. They must speak with confidence, good rhythm, be clear, and not be afraid of mistakes. Practice is the best way, speak with the native.
    But first, consider being in China at the best areas for Mandarin standard. Where is it in China?

      @@AskAndy Thanks for the feedback, Andy: this lesson on pronunciation tips especially on stress was very helpful. Paradoxically, it also explains why many Chinese don't sound like English speakers, stressing the last part of words. 'First' becomes 'firSTE.' for example... Yes, regarding your approach, you provide intuitive logic that works, which I enjoy rather than passive rote learning that is so boring in comparison. (I can point out some other features in your English that you might like to improve if you wish - basically just fine-tuning. That said, you already have a very agreeable and captivating speaking style. ) Best wishes to you and your wife.

    Great analysis in the first half of the video! But In the 2nd half, I don’t understand what u meant by “the tone of 南京话 is wrong”. 南京话有南京话本身的tone, 如果影片里是南京人说南京话,那她南京话的tone是对的,我们只能说南京话的tone和普通话不同,而不能说她的南京话的tone不对。如果你想演示的是“南京人说普通话时的发音问题”,那我可以理解你的意思:“这位南京人说的普通话不标准因为她的tone不对”。如果是此意,那这段video segment 的title应该改成“南京人说普通话”。否则我不明白你是在评论“南京话和普通的区别”还是在评论“南京人说普通话时的发音问题”。(Btw, I’m a native Chinese speaker)🤗

    • @AskAndy
      @AskAndy  3 года назад

      我是从老外的视角出发的。只是想告诉他们即使普通话的声调错了,只要重音和节奏是对的,大多数的中国人还是可以听懂的。所以第二部分是南京人说普通话的发音问题,尤其是相对于普通话而言的声调错误问题

    Good analysis! I started studying Chinese around a year and a half ago (and although I'm far from being fluent, I feel I have a good grasp of the tones). I watched that interview around a month after I started learning the language, and I remember I had no trouble whatsoever to understand what Zuckerberg was saying, and I even thought his pronunciation is quite good, haha. Now though...It is a different story. His sentence structure and tones were so off that I didn't get a lick of what he was talking about (past the 我的中文很糟糕 part), and I had to wait for you to repeat his words. Maybe elementary students have an easier time understanding each other because they make similar mistakes. But I guess, the more your tones and overall pronunciation improve, the harder it is to understand "bad" Chinese.

    I think it’s a shame you view the other “dialects” as less than Mandarin, and not as true languages. I don’t know enough about Nanjing dialect to comment on it specifically but in general Iw ould assume the speakers of a dialect have found their own unique and complete forms of expression. In the US we have dialects (and in this case they really are dialects, not languages, because they’re mutually intelligible which many Chinese dialects are not) which have less prestige than others, but the ones with less prestige are understood by linguists to be complete and fully logical in their own way just like the prestige dialects. E.g., African American English is quite different from white English, but actually follows its own internal grammar and phonology.
    I enjoy your videos a great deal.
