    I think questions with 'ma' are easier for beginners because you can easily hear it every time, since it is at the end of a sentence.

    I've studied Chinese for a long time, and now teach Chinese to beginners in the U.S. I love your "trick" quote the verb or adjective to answer yes/no questions. Your videos are excellent. It's obvious that you have a firm understanding of grammar and linguistics. I have one comment and a question. My question: Where are you from in China? My comment: I think adding ma at the end of a sentence is an easier way to firm yes./no questions even for English speakers. Although we don't have a question particle in English, we sometimes raise our voices at the end of a statement to make a question eg. You're not going to the party? In a sense the ma works in the same way, but instead of raising our voice, we add the ma particle in Mandarin. Thank you for all your videos. You are a wonderful teacher.

    I'm very much a beginner in Chinese, but this video really helped me a lot. One trick that I immediately thought of for wei1 is the word "wee" which also means "small" and is commonly used in Ireland and Scotland.

    Andy, I had no trouble with the -ma particle since Japanese also has the -ka particle for yes or no questions and latin also has the -ne question marker. Also I had heard of the -ma question marker long before I studied Mandarin because the "ma" syllable is used as the classic example of Chinese tones.

    One of my hardest habits to overcome is using a rising tone at the end of questions. In English, it's the normal way to do it, but having to end a question in Chinese with a different or neutral tone is difficult to do.

    It's very interesting, i was wondering why English native speaking wouldn't understand ma or ka since I find it very clear, then it occurred to me that we have that yes or no particle in Arabic but it comes before the question not after it. for example, the phrase "you are Chinese" is "Anta Sini", to make it a question you just add "hel" so it becomes "hel anta sini?"

    It seems to me that the difference between choice 1 and 2 in the questions is more like "Do you want to" for 1 and "Don't you want to" for choice 2. As a question in 2 the person asking would imply that choosing the object of the question is a positive. It is neutral in 1.
    Is it just me, or does "ma" always sound like a dare?

    Thank you for these great videos! They augment my current online learning. Isn't it funny that "monosyllabic" is so many syllables? It's like how "abbreviation" is so long, and "phonetics" is not phonetic. Now I'm curious, and I'm going to click your video about numbers in Chinese. I'm confused why beginner speakers would find pattern 1 (hao buhao) easier? I see no difference between pattern 1 and 2 regarding ease of speech or comprehension. I also did not fully catch which is more common with native speakers. Does it depend on whether the word is monosyllabic or disyllabic?

      lt's true that most Chinese teachers will tell you how important the stroke orders are.

    • @AskAndy
      @AskAndy  4 года назад

      lt's really important for native Chinese because we value a lot about our handwriting. Think about Chinese calligraphy. Have you ever heard of English calligraphy?

    • @AskAndy
      @AskAndy  4 года назад

      Correct stroke orders are more likely to make characters good-looking.

      ln addition, we don't write that much. We type in Pinyin and select characters.

    I don't know if my comment will be noticed by Andy LaoShi or not:
    On word 'shui' (water) why do we put the third-tone-symbol on the letter 'i' instead of the letter 'u'?

    • @AskAndy
      @AskAndy  2 года назад

      Good question! Because the full spelling is "uei" and the tone should be on "e" but "e" is omitted and therefore the tone is marked on "i". Again it's my hypothetical explanation intead of "that's a rule in Chinese" from some Chinese textbooks😂

    • @endangfelicia1817
      @endangfelicia1817 2 года назад

      @@AskAndy what about 'liu' (six), is the tone symbol above the letter 'i' or 'u', and why?

    • @AskAndy
      @AskAndy  2 года назад

      It's on "u" because the full spelling is "iou" and it should be on "o" but "o" is omitted then the tone symbol goes with "u" which is after "o"

    • @endangfelicia1817

      @@AskAndy can we conclude that on every single word, if we find 2 vowels, then the tone symbols are always put above the last vowels. Is it?
