I think questions with 'ma' are easier for beginners because you can easily hear it every time, since it is at the end of a sentence.
Yeah. Just pick the one you like

My thoughts exactly. And as for me, I dislike repeating words in a sentence, so I'd choose ma also for this reason.
@@luciekristina1271 wo ye! me too.
I've studied Chinese for a long time, and now teach Chinese to beginners in the U.S. I love your "trick" quote the verb or adjective to answer yes/no questions. Your videos are excellent. It's obvious that you have a firm understanding of grammar and linguistics. I have one comment and a question. My question: Where are you from in China? My comment: I think adding ma at the end of a sentence is an easier way to firm yes./no questions even for English speakers. Although we don't have a question particle in English, we sometimes raise our voices at the end of a statement to make a question eg. You're not going to the party? In a sense the ma works in the same way, but instead of raising our voice, we add the ma particle in Mandarin. Thank you for all your videos. You are a wonderful teacher.
Thank you for letting me know that and sharing your thoughts with everybody!
I'm very much a beginner in Chinese, but this video really helped me a lot. One trick that I immediately thought of for wei1 is the word "wee" which also means "small" and is commonly used in Ireland and Scotland.
Amazing and well explained, thank you for your hard work.

Great video! Great explanations!
Andy, I had no trouble with the -ma particle since Japanese also has the -ka particle for yes or no questions and latin also has the -ne question marker. Also I had heard of the -ma question marker long before I studied Mandarin because the "ma" syllable is used as the classic example of Chinese tones.
Thanks Andy. 👍
Thanks!
One of my hardest habits to overcome is using a rising tone at the end of questions. In English, it's the normal way to do it, but having to end a question in Chinese with a different or neutral tone is difficult to do.
No worries. Take it easy. Tones are not that important👇ruclips.net/video/BGm3ftiEjTQ/видео.html

It's very interesting, i was wondering why English native speaking wouldn't understand ma or ka since I find it very clear, then it occurred to me that we have that yes or no particle in Arabic but it comes before the question not after it. for example, the phrase "you are Chinese" is "Anta Sini", to make it a question you just add "hel" so it becomes "hel anta sini?"
You're great ❤❤❤❤

It seems to me that the difference between choice 1 and 2 in the questions is more like "Do you want to" for 1 and "Don't you want to" for choice 2. As a question in 2 the person asking would imply that choosing the object of the question is a positive. It is neutral in 1.
Is it just me, or does "ma" always sound like a dare?
Xie xie thank you Teacher Andy

Hi Andy, I love your videos
I would like to know if I can use this structure (verb不verb) with 能(néng).
I`m not sure if 不能 is always translated by `it`s not allowed`
example:我能不能请你吃饭?
Hi Andy. If someone is asking me this, "Is this yours? or This yours?" How he say it? Is it, "Zhe shi nide ma?" Is the answer shide or wode? Or bushi or bu wode if not mine? Thanks in advance.
Good question!
Q:Zhe shi nide ma?
A1:Zhe shi wode./Shi./Shide.
A2:Zhe bu shi wode./Bushi./Bushi(de).
The most common answers are: A1: Shide. A2: Bushi.
Because they are both two syllables.

In Australia we say ‘no worries’ rather than ‘no problem’ ( generally speaking)
I'm confused why beginner speakers would find pattern 1 (hao buhao) easier? I see no difference between pattern 1 and 2 regarding ease of speech or comprehension. I also did not fully catch which is more common with native speakers. Does it depend on whether the word is monosyllabic or disyllabic?

Yiding, bukeyi, buxing, xingcuole, erbaiwu, zouba.
What are adjectives or verbs that use mei to negate them aside from the word you?
Don't have/doesn't have - 没有Mei you
有you is the only verb
For adjectives, we negate with NOT in English and it is 不bu in Chinese:

haven't been

Hey Andy I have a question regarding the pronunciation of “rén”. I was taught that the the “r” in chinese is pronounced similarly to the “s” in “Asia”. But at 4:29, when you say “Tā shì Zhōngguó rén ma?” The “rén” sounds like the English pronunciation of the letter r. I’m a bit confused can you explain?
Sorry I meant at 4:20
lt might sound similar but I didn't do that.
You can try it with the "SIAN" in ASIAN.
The difference lies in your lips when you pronounce R in English and Chinese.
You need to make your lips like kissing for the R in English while open you mouth a little bit for the R in Chinese.
How do we say "I love you" to a family member, like your children or your parents in Mandarin?
我爱你。

Good question!
lt's true that most Chinese teachers will tell you how important the stroke orders are.
lt's really important for native Chinese because we value a lot about our handwriting. Think about Chinese calligraphy. Have you ever heard of English calligraphy?
Correct stroke orders are more likely to make characters good-looking.
ln addition, we don't write that much. We type in Pinyin and select characters.
laoshi ni ai buai wo?
😁Wo ai wode pengyou men
hello dear teacher, what's the difference between和and 跟?
Good question!
和 1. AND between two nouns or pronouns :
我和你 wo he ni: me AND you
苹果和香蕉pingguo he xiangjiao: apples AND bananas
和 2. WITH + somebody:
他和(他的)中国朋友说中文。Ta he (ta de) Zhongguo pengyou shuo Zhongwen.
He with (his) Chinese friends speak Chinese language.
跟 1. to follow :
你跟我走。Ni gen wo zou. You follow me to walk.- Follow me
跟 2. WITH(colloquial) + somebody:
他跟(他的)中国朋友说中文。Ta gen (ta de) Zhongguo pengyou shuo Zhongwen.
He with (his) Chinese friends speak Chinese language.
I don't know if my comment will be noticed by Andy LaoShi or not:
On word 'shui' (water) why do we put the third-tone-symbol on the letter 'i' instead of the letter 'u'?
Good question! Because the full spelling is "uei" and the tone should be on "e" but "e" is omitted and therefore the tone is marked on "i". Again it's my hypothetical explanation intead of "that's a rule in Chinese" from some Chinese textbooks😂
@@AskAndy what about 'liu' (six), is the tone symbol above the letter 'i' or 'u', and why?
It's on "u" because the full spelling is "iou" and it should be on "o" but "o" is omitted then the tone symbol goes with "u" which is after "o"
@@AskAndy can we conclude that on every single word, if we find 2 vowels, then the tone symbols are always put above the last vowels. Is it?
So if I don't remember how to ask exactly I just need to put ma in the end😉
Yes. That's it.
But it is just for Yes/No questions.
