Genesis Does What Nintendoes!!! The problem with both the Genesis and the Saturn is that they were number crunchers. It's a similar issue the PS3 had. It was great at crunching numbers, but turning that number crunching into good looking games required more work than the competition. However, if done properly both the Genesis and the Saturn could do things the competition couldn't
I was a SNES boy growing up. That being said I loved the Genesis. I never needed to ask for one since my best friend down the street had one. We would take turns going to each other's houses after school and play the exclusive games that each of us had for the systems. Some great childhood memories.

i was kinda spoiled as a kid and had both. overall i think snes was better but genesis did have some really good games like streets of rage 2 and road rash.

Reminds me of my experiences growing up as well! I had the SNES (before the 64 released), and a couple friends who lived by me owned an NES, Sega Genesis, and SNES, respectively. We used to go to each other's house and play the consoles, share games, and hang out!
No matter how many times I've watch the AVGN episodes, if they pop up in recommended or at the end of a video, I always find myself here once again. True entertainment, and well deserved success and respect Nerd

People can go on about PlayStation vs. Xbox and so forth, but the Genesis vs. Super Nintendo was a true war. Each console had a vastly different library and vibe. A lot of lines were drawn on playgrounds I imagine.

Xbox and PlayStation are best friends compared to what Nintendo and Sega were in the 90s. Their libraries are almost identical so it’s just a matter of personal preference.

I follow some RUclipsrs and TBH, I didn’t enjoy the new path they take that kinda destroys their good reputation in what made them best. But then, there are RUclipsrs like James that continues to be who they always is and always gives us the same classical entertainment most of us enjoy endlessly.

"Blast Processing" was actually data compression and decompression on-the-fly. It's what made games like Sonic 2 possible. Sega talked about it in industry reports and publications. They could use bigger ROM sizes on standard hardware, and other tricks. It was something real, but Sega exaggerated about it, and gave it a cheesy marketing name.

Blast Processing = Marketing, but on the real side of life, it was faster DMA (Direct Memory Access) ... a sub-component able to use direct memory access, such as video graphics cards, which is all outside the main processor.
SNES has DMA. and although all that's technically needed for that is some form of bus arbitration (multiple devices sharing same address and data lines) "proper" DMA on most 16-bit platforms uses a controller that can e.g. juggle multiple transfers at a time, SNES has two for different uses, HDMA fires during each horizontal line which allowed some nice vfx, like screen transitions
there isn't any meaningful speed difference and how DMA is used depends on situation. as example of simpler DMA, C64 has a RAM expansion module with DMA that enable program called Nuvie to play full motion video on C64 at reasonable framerate which for the original CPU would be impossible

When Nintendo was first brought in replacing Atari Consoles, it's like the WWE hosted Monday Night RAW in 1993. And when Sega brought the Genesis as the answer to Super Nintendo, the same pattern is like WCW hosting Monday Nitro in 1995 at the same time RAW was airing, thus culminated in the Monday Night Wars. and The Console War between Sega Genesis and Nintendo shared the same pattern.

If this pattern keeps up, Nintendo might have survived longer in the Console World, but Sega would have outlived Nintendo. I think their little battle over Atlus proves which company is better at handling their finances.
As for which console I prefer, I like both. I prefer the Genesis because I like the music better and, to me, the graphics are more stylized and appealing, not to mention the animation for each game is generally better.
And yes, Snes fanboys, Genesis games are(by in large) much faster than Snes games. That was one of the consoles' main appeal, it's speed.

Sega's "Blast Processing" was actually a marketing term created in response to the Super Nintendo's Mode 7 (Used in Super Mario Kart). Mode 7 was such a powerful effect, and Sega needed a response to Nintendo's newest attack. Blast processing was created as a result of that.

+Marcel Weber It is true that Genesis is still faster, but even so, the term "Blast Processing" was created to help market the system. Also, Mode 7 was very important to games like Mario Kart. It allowed for images to be rotated, put at an angle or distorted, which is why the game is possible. In Super Mario Kart, the track is an image with Mode 7 rotation.

Genesis (and all SEGA systems) kicked Nintendo's butt at real arcade action and accurate arcade translations. The graphics were often close to arcade quality, and the gameplay and level designs were always faithful translations! Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Shadow Dancer, TMNT, Hang-On, Ghouls'N'Ghosts, G-Loc, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter 2, and so many more!
Just started watching your videos. I think it's really awesome how you always happen to connect your topics with your own life personally, such as when you brought up you would have conversations about these topics with other people in your life, and gives a really nice perspective for someone like me who didn't grow up during those times. Great work!

I find it funny how people think Sega vs Nintendo is still a relevant argument. It's obvious that Nintendo won and now Nintendo is miles ahead of Sega in the gaming industry. It's funny how there are some people who still think Sega and Nintendo are on the same level. One youtube commenter in particular by the name of George Miles is the biggest Sega fanboy I've seen. If he reads this comment then he will go crazy trying to defend Sega and say they're a great company and they're still just as good as Nintendo.
Even Sonic had no choice but to go on Nintendo's (and others) consoles starting on the 6th gen XD I'd like to go back in time to tell SEGA fanboys that their precious mascot will end up on Nintendo's consoles.

Wayne Cox Well Sega did publish games for Nintendo consoles but Nintendo never published games for Sega consoles. Probably because Nintendo never fell out of the console market.
Depends on the game. I found beat em ups better on the Genesis like Streets of Rage. SNES did great with games like Super Metroid and Secret of Mana. Road Rash was another Genesis favorite.
X Men on the Genesis was pretty good too along with Eternal Champions. Street Fighter imo was better on the SNES.
Granted I played games from both systems at different times so my comparisons could be off.
Friend had a snes. I had Sega. I liked the Sega more.
Paul Prejean to me there’s no comparison. There’s very few games only for the genesis that I like. On the other hand, there’s ton of exclusives for the snes that are masterpieces. It’s just overall a much better console.

I don't always watch a video that I relate to so hard... but this is it. I was offended by that commercial like my dog had been kicked and someone needed to *do* something about it. I had those stickers on my controllers, read all those guide books and read every letter on every page of every Nintendo Power I had. I'm the same age. Just magical, thank you!

What baffles me is how Sega always got away with showing Nintendo's products and games in their commercials. Could you just do that back then without infringing copyright? Could you do the same thing today?
I owned both consoles, and overall, technical specs aside, neither was better than the other. They each had their ups and downs.

Gen: Better CPU which allows better animation, visual effects, more sprites and "action" on screen,

Yeah but is that a benefit? What that means is that Nintendo designed the system with the intention that developers would have to pay for even more expensive cartridges if they wanted more processing power that the Snes is crucially lacking.
The Gen provides fast, and balanced hardware from the start, and it's 2 years older!

I absolutely loved both these consoles. I was lucky I had the Genesis and my brother had the SNES. So we fought about which was better. But honestly they both brought their own unique things to the table. The deciding factor for me was Mortal Kombat. No blood....?! I knew I was a kid but come on Nintendo don't baby us. I rubbed that in his face everyday. It's odd my brother was 4 years older than me but I had the more adult console. If you think Nintendo had blood and wasn't babying their gamers show me where's Splatterhouse 3 for SNES. Yeah that game would never make it on there. And Splatterhouse 3 was one my favorite games. As for technical crap they were both great consoles. I could name some games that were horrible on SNES and great on Genesis, and I could name some games that were horrible on Genesis and great on SNES. But the deciding factor was the Nintendo hand holding... MK no blood pfft screw that.
So, since there is no blood on Mortal Kombat for the SNES, it means the Genesis is better? Don't get me wrong, I think they're both great consoles, but just cause of a game. That's pretty stupid for a defending factor.

It is so crazy how times change. Back in the day, it was Nintendo vs. Sega. Sonic or Mario, one or the other. Those were the battle lines in the console wars. Nowadays Sega has no console, Nintendo has a third rate system behind consoles made by Sony and Microsoft of all people, and Sonic games are on Nintendo!

I own both consoles and even though both are awesome in their own ways, I would consider Super Nintendo to be more on the childish side while Genesis more on the hardcore side. Genesis had many games that were "dark" and mysterious. Just as dark as the console itself while Nintendo was the "white angel".

I think the Genesis was more advanced for its time, but the SNES had a better collection of games and better controllers.

The Mega Drive blew the SNES out the water! The faster CPU meant that slow-down was rarely an issue, so demanding games like Gunstar Heroes and Sonic ran consistently. SNES game have so much slowdown. Also, Mega Drive can have more enemies on screen, making beat em ups like Streets of Rage far better than any SNES alternative. Oh, and speaking of SoR, Streets of Rage 2 has the best 16-bit soundtrack EVER. While some SNES games sounded great, particularly orchestral stuff, Mega Drive had better bass and the native headphone jack allows glorious stereo sound. Graphically SNES games are more colourful but many games use special chips. It's only fair if we consider Mega CD/32x and when these are combined, it provides full CD-quality audio and full 3D graphics. The SNES is a great system but Nintendo fanboys need to quit thinking Mega Drive is inferior in every way. Castlevania, Sonic, SoR, Shinobi, Contra, Ristar, Alien Soldier, Moonwalker, and Virtua Racing shows that there are good alternatives to SNES offerings. Just fuel for thought :)

I have much more fun with my SEGA Genesis than with my SNES in the day.
Pick a handful of Super NES games that have constant slowdown. And no easy targets (Gradius III, etc.)
If you want a good example of what the SNES can handle, look at a Rendering Ranger: R2

Its not what we subscribe for and many of us just watch his behind the scenes and reviews with mike monday to learn more about him
kiasam gheshlaghi Many people who play as characters have done it. It may be different than his normal stuff but it would still be interesting none the less. Every channel has videos we did not subscribe to see. I love this channel and his videos so much I'd like to know about him. Don't think he would do it though, it take quite some time to do. I know many people probably don't like the concept because it has been a 'popular' thing to do but I'm sure many of us are mature enough to look past that. Just what I think. :)
Megan there is really no need for James to do a draw my life video, he's shown us plenty about his childhood and personal life, look at his dragon in my dreams video, or tmnt birthday party, just to name a few examples also the avgn Christmas carol, all you have to do is pay attention to the videos and you'll learn all this information.
