Yeah, I'd already played Thunder Force IV because my sister's boyfriend owned it 😊 I also owned Power Strike II for the Game Gear, which is another fantastic scrolling shooter. Another great swap I did was Alex Kidd for Mortal Kombat II, my mother was against "violent" video games to the point where I was banned from owning Streets of Rage or Golden Axe, but I snuck around those rules by swapping the game with a friend. The Mortal Kombat series may be somewhat flawed in terms of fight mechanics, but it was an awful lot more fun than Alex Kidd!

Great episode. This felt like a classic old time Nerd episode. Playing a pretty bad game (although not downright broken like Hong Kong 97) and getting unnecessairly angry over it.

I'm a bit disappointed that you didn't equip the armor that was too heavy off the bat in Super Hydlide, it's a great way to die before you even leave the town.
@J. C I know, right. I thought I was the only one who was getting Daggerfall vibes from Virtual Hydlide. And did anyone else notice that the opening cutscene was a direct ripoff of "As the world falls down" from Labyrinth?.
When it comes to randomized games, the claim that there are billions of level combinations is extremely misleading. Not only would you have to rule out the majority of non-playable combos, you'd also have to rule out the combos that are functionally identical. For example: if you were to move one object one space to the left, that would technically count as a new level combination.

the knight is named jim?... maybe this exists in the same world as Monty Python and the Holy Grail... where the wizard is called tim.. now it all makes sense 😁
Yeah, but I don't know, you can say that about any game. I don't think it would be remembered as a classic even if it was good. It feels too generic to be memorable you know?
IMO, it could've been a better game if they'd have made it better. Yes, it could benefit from more advanced technology, but so could most any game. There were similar style games at the time that both look & feel better.
Imagine not having eaten for two hours and suddenly dropping dead in the middle of a conference meeting. Sadly, that is a real phenomenon in Japan called karoshi where people work so hard they die. RIP to those who died from this disease.
It amazes me that after years of watching the nerd, his room and content still makes me think he's stuck in the 80s, and I get confused when he mentions things like Sonic 06 as if he can see the future or something.
I like the episode but I actually think that Virtual Hydelide looks pretty cool for a 95 game. The 3D environnement isn't that bad, the random generation of the world is an original trick and you actually do stuff.
[Virtual Hydlide] "I'l let it keep thinking it's '94, so it doesn't know its cruel fate of being discontinued." *game published in 1995 - Sega Saturn Time Travel? ;D*
I applaud Virtual Hydlide for being such an ambitious game for it's time. It looks like what a lot of massive, dungeon-crawling, open-world fantasy games from today would've probably looked like if they had been made during those decades gone by. I think it's impressive. Now if only it was a good game, haha!
This game actually looks kinda neat if it had good graphics and normal teleport/save systems, seems like it'd have a lot of replay-ability with the randomly generated layout
Virtual hydlide is pretty ambitious , despite its issues. It was trying to be skyrim....way before skyrim. That effort alone is enough to give it some applause.

To be honest. These games look ambitious and interesting. Maybe poorly programmed but they caught my attention.
Agree, the Virtual one would have blown my mind back then..
Virtual Hydlide even looks like some sort of antecesor to Demon's Souls and Dark Souls.

So many reasons AVGN is one of my favs. The fact that he's also a fan of Tool is just icing on the sweet, nerdy cake.

Virtual Hydlide, The Dark Souls before Demon's Souls... not gonna lie though, it actually looks kinda cool.
it's not.
Its really really bad. trust me fam, had it as a kid and actually broke the disc the same day i got it cause it was so shitty.
King's Field came before, King's Field ----> Demon's Souls ---> Dark Souls
I had it as a child. And then never played an RPG ever again. It's that bad...
Fun Fact: Even though Hylide is panned in the US, its really popular and well received in Japan.
the knight is named jim?... maybe this exists in the same world as Monty Python and the Holy Grail... where the wizard is called tim.. now it all makes sense 😁
The history behind the Knight Tim is as funny as the joke itself
😁
Identity theft is not a joke Jim!
Hopefully he doesn't run into The Knights that say Ni.

The concept of Virtual Hydlide is actually pretty interesting. Seems like it could've been a better game if it was done later.
it doesn't look that bad, it's like a zelda game. now I want to play it.

Wait, a game starting with Super that isn't on the Super Nintendo but the Sega Genesis instead? 😂
Why didn't they call it Mega Hydlide, like how the Genesis naming conventions usually worked?
Virtual Hydlide should have been called Hydlide 64
Super Fantasy Zone did that too!!😁😆
Its on the Sega Saturn not the Nintendo 64
I guess Hydlide Genesis didn't do it for them.
It amazes me that after years of watching the nerd, his room and content still makes me think he's stuck in the 80s, and I get confused when he mentions things like Sonic 06 as if he can see the future or something.
Sonic '06... in 1994!
Sonic 06 is timeless, because it's such a gem.
I like the episode but I actually think that Virtual Hydelide looks pretty cool for a 95 game.
The 3D environnement isn't that bad, the random generation of the world is an original trick and you actually do stuff.
Doom from 1993 looked better than this.
Yeah, I thought the games didn't seem too bad this time. I probably would've enjoyed them to some extent at the time.

Even in being cheesy the good classic games are better than the bad ones :v
I feel like virtual hydlide was WAY ahead of it's time. It just needed better technology and it probably could have been a classic.
Yep
And some better camera positioning. You can barely see what's in front of you with the player sprite taking up a fourth of the screen.
and maybe if instead of being procedural generation they could have made a more interesting overworld
The Saturn could output better graphics than Virtual Hydlide at a better framerate, what it needed was better programming.
The hadoken swords and dumb boss fighting mechanics killed it. It's not a game way ahead of its time. It's just a shitty game.
You somehow made Virtual Hydlide look kinda good.
Ikr? It doesn't really look all that bad really....considering the shit console platform it came on.
I only just noticed now that not only the store scene is completely mirrored (thus facing wrong), the background is a CVS.
I have to admit, some of the features in "Super Hydlide" are pretty innovative, like the "night-day" mechanics and the "good monsters"...
The Ultima series did them better.
Wizardry did good monsters on the nes, and did it better.
Simons Quest had a day and night cycle...
@@jimbob3332 i was going to say that the ultima series had day-night cycles and good monsters as early as 1985 I think
Super Hydlide is actually a pretty good game, but flawed. The game has really good music (besides the title screen music).

I applaud Virtual Hydlide for being such an ambitious game for it's time. It looks like what a lot of massive, dungeon-crawling, open-world fantasy games from today would've probably looked like if they had been made during those decades gone by. I think it's impressive. Now if only it was a good game, haha!
Yea, lots in this game screams developers who put in effort and cared.
Yep. It looks like Elder Scrolls 1 and 2. Great games at the time, but kind of clunky nowadays.
It is a clunky but decent game, after all.
I bought it the day I got my Saturn and loved it. I am the minority, I know.
