teh body ov teh AVGN keeps pumping out cinematic trash that would make ed wood call for a reshoot.... but the mind and heart ov the AVGN is still going strong!
I like how Mike won't turn off sounds of music on principle, so he can give us the full experience. What good Dark Castle would be without "nyeh nyeh nyeh nyeh"?
Sometimes it is not the game but the situation that makes a game entertaining. You turned this shitty ass game into hours worth of watching, literally turning shit into gold. Thank you.
This is kind of an obscure reference, but I remember an episode of Magnum PI that I saw probably 25 years ago where Magnum was obsessed with some kind of handheld game that beeped constantly. Throughout the episode it steadily drove Higgins more and more insane. I remember the freeze frame at the end showing an exasperated Higgins looking half asleep as the annoying beep of the game played in the background. That's how I felt Mike was by the end of this game with the "nyeh nyeh nyeh nyeh nyeh!"
I had a dream that Mike made a Star Trek TOS comedy fan film where he digitally imposed himself as Spock into the episodes and would say funny things in place of the original dialogue. In the dream I thought it was very funny and well done so I showed my parents. My parents hated it. I mean they didn't just dislike it, they thought it was so bad they lost a great deal of respect for me simply for having made them watch it. They fast forwarded through most of it while sighing and groaning dramatically. It made me feel like a bad person for having liked it in the first place. I'm not sure whether it was a dream or a nightmare.
2:38:55 Hah, I made him say the thing. Still can't believe you went back for more after beating it on easy. That's like getting a headache and then going back to get a migraine.
EA's crowning achievement, the greatest maximization of the Genesis' hardware, a tour de force of public domain music and elite sound design, a true exemplar of topical humor like "SADDAM WAS HERE" - Dark Castle, everyone
im sure that future generation will look back at our pop-culture obsession and be much more kinda about it. then sardonicly laugh 'they all said "*cringe*" and didn't understand the irony they made "LOL""
Congrats on beating it on hard, Im one of the few that watched the whole video. Here are some game suggestions I think you might like: Beholgar - (On PC) Its sort of a throwback to an arcade style sidescroler/platformer. (reminds me kind of like Willow) Mullet Madjack - (On PC) A crazy fast paced 80s themed first person shooter thingy. Hard to describe but I think you will enjoy it because you play it in short bursts. Ultra quick levels. Super Wifu Ball - (Yes really. On PS5) Its basically Super Monkey Ball. Whats in the center of the ball doesnt matter. The gameplay seems smooth, and it looks to have fun and challenging levels. It might scratch that Monkey Ball itch that Banana Rumble missed.
Even though the game is poorly designed, even though it is needlessly hard, even though the designers obviously took short cuts and put money first, a nerd still beat the shit out of this game, and mastered every nuance. Because what else is there to do really? You have become a powerful nerd Matei.
Thanks for the shoutout Mike. I can select all the images with a traffic light, so yes, I’m human. Fun stream with some perfect momentary wins followed by instant defeat.
Here to pump the retention numbers! These longplays are great background while I read news and figure out my day. I hope the algorithm keeps rewarding longplays that don't require a lot of editing. It's a shame RUclips doesn't straighten their system out and that this content has to be sourced from another platform entirely.
I must say. I dont understand how mike has the resilience, like if i play a game. And i just start too suck, games start to get annoying, frustration kicks in. The ONLY solution is too just turn it off, play another time, when im mentally there, but i dont understand how mike, can being pummeled by a game. And just like heavenly intervention come back and beat that specific part. And do it for hours. Impressive
I don't always have that patience. I have to be in the right mood, and it has to be the right game. When I do variety streams, you can often see me turn off games I have no interest in. But sometimes if a game interests me, and im in the right mood for it, then it works out.
A few things...1. you don't HAVE to get fireball, and if you do you forgot to use shield on eyeball bullets. 2. On Black Knight 2, DON'T climb up - you can long jump right to a rope and make your way across before rats come down and can even exit the area BEFORE the gargoyle even gets there!! 3. On Last Black Knight stage only pull the bottom lever to the left, this will always avoid the end glitch and you only need half a platform to pull center chain!
I watched the recording of this and part one on tw before it was categorized for subs only(yes, the full 13 hours although I watched the second part on 2x speed) and part one was a masterpiece. Seeing you learn everything from beginning to end was fantastic! I have a request if you ever feel like it: Pretty please, can you make a full playthrough of Rayman 1? At least until world 3 because world 2 is when the game gets hard and I mean really hard.
These video;s stop me from growing up :'). Used to love old nes games, but these days i just dont have the grindset to beat these turbo hard games you can only finish if you remember the whole game. Ps. the music is BACH harpichord! One of the best pieces ever written. Baroque music is just like a game speedrun, you gotta run through the whole piece and remember where to 'jump', 'duck' and 'fire'.
I've been enjoying re-experiencing some of these Ultra Hard games on ROM Hack versions that make them easier or with bonus content like upgraded controls and such... Zelda 2 Redux great example
forget emailing the creator, get his phone number and leave the following message on his answering machine at 3am every day for the next five years, "Nananananana"
Ah yes, this fcking game.. Im gonna have to hear nyah-nyah-nyah 16000 times as I play this video in the background. This game reminds me of the shitty platforming sections in double dragon for some reason.
Mr. Matei, 💚 this video/stream. Mike, I don't like watching you get upset, I enjoy watching you complete games, especially retro. Why? Because I too have been playing NES and that generation of gaming since 1989/90. I played video games at friends on the block homes, but took awhile for parents to buy me one back then. Atari 2600 is how I started and the arcades. What I enjoy the most about your videos & streams: 1st & always, you. 2nd, you playing retro games more professionally than I have ever known my entire life. 3rd, I truly enjoy seeing you complete games, especially like The Predator (NES), Dark Castle, Milan's Secret Castle, and others. Outward and Elden Ring would be great to see you complete. I listen. I know what you've said about Elden Ring, I get it. But Elden Ring pays a lot of respect to retro gaming.
Highly recommend Majuu Ou (King of Demons) for SNES. It's like a cross between Contra and Castlevania. It's quite difficult, but fair, and the graphics are excellent. There is an English patch for the limited story.
Just when you thought Aunt Gertrude's Green Bean Casserole was the most disgusting thing you'd see this holiday season, Mike dishes out a steaming pile of Dark Castle on Hard Mode.
I would die of happiness if you did a complete play through of young indiana jones on genesis. That game makes me laugh, and i like laughing, sometimes, in small doses. I have no money to buy you with though i am afraid. If i had money i wouldn't be here in the first place.
Howdy, @mikematei. IDK if anyone mentioned it already, but the Frankensteins getting up might not have been a bug. I noticed they were getting up before you had the fireball, and staying dead after you got it. Also, you were talking about putting the videos on here and I'd like to mention there might be a group of people that watch it on Twitch because we also have the chat alongside as you are playing, even if it's a past stream.
Btw i enjoy your new youtube profile picture which looks like the snow ski scene in dumb & dumber where harry freezes his tingue against the ski seat thing
Mike, that time those "frankensteins" were refusing to die - it wasn't a bug. You just need fireballs to kill them dead, and you had rocks. Also, funny thing is you don't need to extinguish dragon at all - you can just pass through him)) I did beat it on hard also
Watched the whole thing, it took me a week, but I did it. Entertaining Winter break to say the least! Also FOOTBALL HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. MADDEN 95, MADDEN 96, MADDEN 97, MADDEN 98, MADDEN 99, WHO THE F IS JOHN MADDEN

You sort of need to appreciate the context of this game: it was an old computer platform/puzzle game with very deliberate movements and actions required to progress. It's not Super Mario Bros 3. Kind of more like Prince of Persia.
The many Nosferatu films: there's Murnau's original, Herzog's, Shadow of the Vampire, which is about Nosferatu, then the new one (which *is* great, go see it.) 4 over a span of a century. There's probably a ton of knock offs and other crappy cheap vampire flicks that just use that word in the title I'm sure, though.
They actually made the most annoying enemy out of any game, ever. NANANANANA. NANANANANA. No way would I be able to play this. Out of the question, lol.
funny thing is... i do not think you ever needed the fireball at all... because fireball only supposed to help against gargoyles and you are usilg shield alll the time 😂 so you could have avoided going through the eye room xD
Had this game on the Apple iigs, it played much better with mouse for aiming the rocks. I never beat this game, i could get the shield and the fireballs though.
It's not the drones, they are just there as a distraction. It is the orbs of light that are of interest, you should google it if you have not heard. They call them plasmoids. Please do a plasmoid themed stream, you could play space invaders and asteroids.
Next up I vote for NES Rambo while dressed as Rambo impersonating Rambo
Dark Castle is the classic we needed at this time of the year 🤣
This game was made by two guys: the programmer is the creator of Adobe Flash, and the designer is the creator of Pit Fighter.
at least they didn't do superman 64
@@LecorbakOfficialThey should have made a Pepsi Man 2
wow. i just read that he was still in high school when he made this.
wish i was talented 😢
I was going to say it looks impressive for an NES game then i saw sega genesis in the title lol.
No wonder Adobe Flash is so flawed and unstable
One of my favorite AVGN episodes!😂

Do another poll for a game. How about "The Original Prince of Persia" or "Flashback" now that you've Mastered Dark Castle.
i second flashback
I hope he does out of this world. Although knowing him, he might already have done so so I need to check.
Hmmm, those games seem too good. How about some garbage games?
Add Desert Bus to the poll.

Just trying to play this game for 2 minutes was incredibly frustrating, I dont know how you put up with hours of this, but I guess someone has to
I appreciate you trying it for a bit to get a handle on what i went through.

Hi Mike. Merry Christmas 🎄
🎄
dude even the earlier attempts I am convinced you were going to do it... Bravo!
When i saw a 5 hour dark castle stream i was expecting a scream fest.. I was pleasantly surprised how much you mastered the game 😂
dude I'm a HUGE sega genesis fan and have seen some of the best and shittiest games made on this platform. you are a brave man for this.

I watched the whole damn video. You fell into the dungeon SO MANY TIMES
Pretty sure I only fell in once. You better rewatch it from start to finish to double check.
You are a braver man than most. Happy New Year to you and Erin
