- This is a clip from the end of Francis Chan's last sermon at Cornerstone Church, the church he founded sixteen years ago. He is stepping down voluntarily to pursue a ministry in the inner city -- possibly Los Angeles. These are the parting words that he did not want to leave his church without saying.
The full sermon and previous sermons can be seen here:

Love this man. Very very few famous pastors are sold out for Christ. Pray for this brother.
This video seriously changed my life
Many Preachers today are not.....
making a stand for Christ like Francis Chan because they're affraid of losing their tithes and offerings which is really really SAD!
GOD says "There will be no cowards in Heaven!"
great sermon! .... I love Jesus with all my heart and for all that He has done for me.... Praise Jesus!
I just ran across his videos. Wow! God Bless Him!!!!
we do not deserve Jesus yet He, out of Love for us sinners, willingly and obediently went to the Cross...
pause and ponder...
Jesus Christ came to seek and save the lost!
Love compelled God our Heavenly Father to give up His One and Only Beloved Son for us ; Love compelled Jesus Christ to obey the Father and gave up His Life at the Cross for us!
What an Awesome Love this is :)♡
Thank You Jesus
Now that's a sermon. Francis has encouraged me to read the scriptures and just ask God "Lord what are you trying to tell me here". Many pastors give beautiful sermons but how many truly tell it how it is!!
Daniel Gonzalez yep. That's a sermon alright. Backloading works onto the gospel. Nice one Francis Chan.
+Romans 8:11 Thats the problem with you liberals. The epistle of James is a NIGHTMARE for yall. Jesus said IF YOU LOVE ME YOULL KEEP MY COMANDMENTS. AND IF YOU DONT LOVE ME YOU WILL NOT KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS. is that clear or do we need the Strongs Hebrew and Greek concordance for study help? Matthew 28:17-20 do you remember when Jesus said TEACHIN THEM TO DO ALLL THAT I HAVE COMMANDED YOU.
TDH
AMEN! 💆Hallelujah! 🙋 Yes, yes, YES!!! FINALLY! So grateful for someone else who understands & not in a false sense of security & denial to stay in sin. That's slavery to sin & the wages of sin is death. Not freedom in obedience to CHOOSE Jesus & thus, receiving His Holy Spirit. Thank you. Blessings in Jesus.
Francis Chan dont you ever stop walking with the lord i read your book on how you said you said you wanted to be like those peple in jail or just any body doing wrong that way you can have something to give out and let your heart scream out, but am going to tell you that the spirit of GOD is with you in everything you do for you question your self at times but dont because your purpose like you say is not to be know or to understand for GOD works in ways we cant see. GOD IS WITH YOU!!!!!
Faith without action is dead. It cannot save anyone. If you've ever played Simon Says, and Simon says, "Flap your arms," are you gonna go, I'm flapping my arms in my heart, no your out.
We don't hear that type of sermon much in our time - thank you for stirring the pot !
Please pray for me to not be a coward. and please pray that I never become complacent just because I have done something one time, but that I always look forward and press on, to be zealous for good works while preaching the Gospel in season and out, where ever God calls me. I'll pray for all of you too.
What's up?
So powerful !!! Ty Jesus for putting men like this in my path.
Francis will hear those precious words, "well done my good and faithful servant", will you? Are you denying Jesus in front of your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. Be not afraid dear Christian, just believe. What can man do to you?
Yes no cowards in heaven, take a look at the armour we are to put on, there is nothing for our backs, only cowards turn and run. I believe when we go forward it is the Holy Spirit in us who is backing us, may there be more of Him and less of us as we go into all the places preaching the Kingdom of God to a lost and dying world.

WOOOHOOO! AMEN! THANK YOU! TELLING TRUTH! I LOVE IT!!! BLESSINGS abundant & overflowing to you in Jesus!
:-D
Beautifully said! God bless you, and everyone reading this.
This shook my heart so hard, I had to pause the video and cry... :)
God Bless you Francis Chan.
Jesus Is My Salvation: Praise The Lord God Almighty.
Wow 👍🏾 the powerful gospel of Jesus Christ
this is not the gospel...
It wasn't Him that changed your view but God. Francis is a true man of God, God was working through him because Francis continually read the Word of God and thereby kept Jesus in his heart. Therefore he also spoke the truth, the Word, which he read, which is what you heard and what increased your faith. "Faith comes by hearing the word of God."(Romans 10:17) You too can be close to God like that, even closer if you want. Just read the Bible. If you want you can message me. God bless you!
When you wake up tomorrow morning you are one day closer. Everyone lives forever, question is where will you spend eternity? With God, or without God. It is your choice, choose wisely, and carefully. Most important decision you will ever make.
@maznoe Agreed. In our day and age, we see multiple examples of what happens when the man is exalted instead of the Creator. In a way, that may be an underlying reason why God called Chan into another ministry. People were looking at Francis Chan instead of God, even if it is no fault of Chan's. Pastor Chan's obedience to move on to what God has for him will be to his credit.
Wow, this so powerful ! Amen ! God is worth more than life itself. Lord, please help us to never act cowardly but to always keep our eyes on You oh Lord you are incredible and I will die to myself to follow You, always.
@iverson3wha This is so true. Most people believe that theology is only for theologians, pastors, elders...It's for everyone. We are to be Bereans. And we are to counsel each other through the Word.
Our church is becoming a Counseling Center, and many people are being trained, including myself and my family, to be Nouthetic Counselors.
Acai, I am sorry that you did not listen to this man's message. If you would have you would have realized he was not interested in bringing glory to Himself, but in stead bringing glory to God. If you want to be secure in your salvation GIVE GOD THE GLORY, AND HUMBLE YOURSELF.
Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
So salvation is by works? How about we recognize that this passage either means we need to believe or it's talking about sanctification.
The people you mentioned were born and died BEFORE Christ was given. Think about that. God bless you!
To think you have no sin in your life means you have no clue what sin is and you do not have the Holy Spirit dwelling inside of you.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
Think about that. God bless you!
Mariachi153
Uuum, that is referring to original sin ("if you say you're without sin, the Truth is not in you") & would be denying the need for a Savior/Jesus. ... because we are born into sin & we NEED to be born again (Jesus is clear that THAT is the ONLY Way to see the Kingdom of God; through Him to receive the Holy Spirit. If the Son sets you free, you are free in DEED (not a slave to sin any longer). Galatians 5, please. Also, do you think God is a liar? He commands us to be Holy & perfect as our Father is Holy & perfect. Do you think He can't make us Holy? You obviously do not understand the Awesome power of the Holy Spirit. Sad. A born again Christian will NOT live in sin as they instead, live in Jesus. You CAN'T do both. Think about THAT, PLEASE. Your suggestions belittle the Holy Spirit & weaken a believer's or follower's faith to be more surrendered & refined to even RECEIVE the Holy Spirit. Stop that. Many self proclaimed Christians are in a false sense of security & aren't actually saved at all. They have NEVER met Jesus to receive the Holy Spirit & are certainly not transformed, a new creation in Christ as Jesus promises (in John 14) if we love (obey) Him (while turning from our sin with our WHOLE heart). If one surrenders, He WILL certainly show Himself (actually) as He says He will & then ask the Father to send the Holy Spirit to comfort & teach (transforming by renewing the mind/heart) for the rest of our days. Something can deceive a born again Christian, but they will reject that evil as soon as they realize that they're being deceived. They do NOT seek sin or tolerate it. I can't even shop at stores who support homosexual civil union or buy products or eat at restaurants from like companies (there's a lot to pay attention to in order to not feed the evil corruption & darkness). Hallelujah! Blessings in Jesus. 😀✝️
Amen!!!
@droptozro Well said. 1 John is a good starting point to coming to grips with your standing before God. He lays out pretty clearly who Christians should be. If you do not match the description, then you need to seriously question the character of your faith.
you know as i sit here and watch this spirit of god working with chan and every body there had no PRAISE why do you i ask in conerstone church dont praise the lord JESUS cry out loud for him the spirit move me i wanted to PRAISE JESUS for them come on the spirit is moving him out he did his work there ingrave it in there heart now go read his book THE FORGOTTEN GOD you see the spirit crying out to the CHURCH.
This is why God prolong His Judgement bc He wants as many as will come. He has supplied the sacrifice. But we hv to choose if we want it or not.
@maznoe I am sure he didn't wish to bring glory to himself. As the Pastor of that church, he will have to give an account for the souls he is/was entrusted with. If he baptized a bunch of people without being sure of their salvation, he will answer for it.
@iverson3wha I will not read Crazy Love till I find out what this man is all about. I do read my Bible on a regular basis though, study and meditate on it as well. I do hope that some great Pastor takes this man under his wing and shepherds him because he has a lot of zeal and he could make a great preacher with guidance.
@AcaiBunch do you even really know about assurance of salvation? You talk about it, yet you haven't stated anything much about it. Do you even attend Francis Chan's church? If not then stop talking bad about the man when you don't hear his sermons on a regular basis. Besides, not all of his sermons are on RUclips, just the one's the people video tape or choose to put on. And please see the whole sermon of this video, Francis brings all glory to God, never to himself.
Truth!
Colossians 2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with [him] through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
Galatians 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
1 Peter 3:21The like figure whereunto [even] baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
@AcaiBunch All Christians should talk about works. Have you not read James, that faith without works is dead, or Ephesians 2:10 where works have been prepared for us by God? We have ignored works for too long. They do not save us, but they are the evidence of our salvation. If we do not have them, then we are not saved. As to assurance, we are called to test ourselves, not give false assurance to the lost. Too many people will be in Hell who believed wrongly they were saved (Matt 7:21-23).
1 Corinthians 1:14 I am thankful that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15so no one can say that you were baptized into my name.
Does he really think those people were not just getting baptized by Francis Chan?
@iverson3wha Titus 2 instructs us to take someone under our wing, in older men and women mentoring younger men and women. Pastors need pastors just as we all do. Everyone needs someone to be held accountable to before God.
:( that can change
One of my biggest fear is people. Not that I'm not anti-social but their judgment or criticism or the way in which they view/see me. That brings a snare it says in the Bible. And believe me!! It is not only torment, it is a sin. We are to fear NO man, ONLY God himself (and that is in a reverential way or manner). I didn't realize this until I had to face adult bullies, agitators, antagonists....then I realized it.
@AcaiBunch do you even really know about assurance of salvation? You talk about it, yet you haven't stated anything much about it. Do you even attend Francis Chan's church? @AcaiBunch I don't believe that it is required of you to even say a cutesy prayer to God to ask for forgiveness. Once your heart is changed, it's changed. By God, because only He can change hearts. So when these people made the decision to walk up to be baptized in front of all of those people, they made a stand for Christ. Baptism does change lives. It changed mine.
@iverson3wha I won't read Crazy Love until I am sure what this man is all about. I do read my Bible on a regular basis, and I am concerned about this man's teachings. I do hope some elder pastor takes him under his wing. He does have great zeal and could potentially be a great preacher!
You have to also be careful you don't start thinking that your own "works" will get you into heaven. If you are putting your hope about wether you'll "get in" or not into how "well" YOU followed Christ you should read the rest of the new testament where Jesus' chosen apostles help us put together the theology of our faith where the inspired word of God tells us "You are saved by grace through faith, not by works lest anyone should boast."
If you want to boast before almighty, all-knowing, holy and loving and gracious and merciful God one day that you said his name a few times to others expecting him to be impressed, you might want to remember that Jesus said there will be a lot of people saying "we prophesied in YOUR NAME, and cast out demons in YOUR NAME and did many things in YOUR NAME" to whom HE will respond saying: "Depart from me, you workers of iniquity. I never knew you."
Thus, in this statement I believe Jesus was trying to show people that if you put your hope in your own ability to follow Jesus rather than in HIS ability to save you, you might not even possess saving faith. If anyone thinks they are going to get INTO heaven because of their own works, TRULY consider the implications of what your own works are...
Sure, maybe you told some co-workers about Jesus and went out on a mission trip and told people about Jesus. Good job...+ 2 for you. You have been sinning all of your life and for every one time you tell someone about Jesus I can almost guarantee that most of you will have had a lustful thought 10 times as much as you have told people about Christ. The point is, don't trust in your efforts to be righteous. Read the ENTIRE new testament and realize that the only way you become right with God is by placing your faith in what Jesus did for you....THEN follow Him because it's what you were born to do, not because you are paying for your salvation.
@mariachi153 James 2:14 . It sounds to me like you're afraid of leaving your life of lukewarm. You need to realize that Jesus loves you so much he gave his all for you, and if you really love Him, then you would give your all for Him. Don't worry, you are not the only one struggling with this. What we need to do is look at the big picture. Eternity. Is God worth your life?
I believe that God sees our heart, our true intentions. I believe God sees our struggles. Struggling to gain recognition, tempted by so many things. God sees your effort.
Berek Shih
Without turning from sin & FULL surrender to Jesus, there is no change (transformation) because the Holy Spirit is not RECEIVED & thus is still a slave to sin & NOT free in Christ. God knows our hearts alright & those who aren't born again, (Jeremiah 17:9) "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can knows it?" So, understand that the power of the Holy Spirit MUST be received in order to walk in (live like) Jesus. Blessings in Jesus.
Is not solely about all these ritual things. Of course we must repent and all those. But let us not treat it as a chore, as an activity, as the sole purpose of Christianity. I believe God has so much more intended and not limited by all these things. Let's not limit God.
But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars--their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death. Rev 21:8
@paulmorajoshua1 I do know about Assurance of Salvation, thankfully I do not need to learn it from this guy, as there are numerous great preachers out there and I do read my Bible for myself.
If people are concerned about other's taking this man's words out of context, maybe they should STOP posting only part of his messages......
If one give in to sinners betrayed God
what do you mean?
@akayser1 I have listened to several of his videos on RUclips...If I had not searched for and read his doctrinal statement on the website for the college he started I would not know that he is not an Armenian. He talks a LOT about works.
I still have not heard him preach on Assurance of Salvation. Instead he talks mostly about being a lukewarm Christian and being spewed out of the mouth of God. That is not assurance of salvation teaching.
Karen Butcher
It's speaking to those who aren't born again so they'll get moving instead of standing in the same place with their feet on a fire. ... because faith without works is dead. Blessings in Jesus.
Whys this his last sermon
You're right: baptism doesn't save you =). JESUS saves. And He baptizes "with the Holy Spirit and with fire" (Matthew 3:11). That being said, baptism by immersion is important in that it serves as a public symbol: "Hey world, I'm following Jesus. I'm dying to my sin and being resurrected to new life in Him." Part of our commission, Jesus said in His final words here on earth, is to baptize disciples of all nations.
Yeshua Ha'Mashiach

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God."
"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven."
"Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake."
"Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in Heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you."
I WANNA BE A JESUS FREAK 😒. Sometimes im not ;(
Are you one yet? :)
What’s the update?
be encouraged.. we share the same fleshly weakness but each second is an opportunity to start again.. even NOW God bless you friend
But this is why Jesus Christ came to save us, and continues to forgive us of our sins.
1 John 1
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
Mariachi153
If there's no change, a transformation of a new creation; that the Holy Spirit is is not present IN a person then that defeats the whole purpose. If the Son sets you free, you are free indeed (not to keep on sinning). That means your actions will be evident that you are like Jesus. Blessings in Jesus.
shellbellbutterfly but that doesn't mean that you are bot fail or fall
Well in that case I'm going skydiving then...I might as well conquer fear and have fun too lol cuz I ain't gone be no coward I wants in to heaven yeeeeeehhhaaaawww!!!
You're back-loading works onto the gospel of Christ, which sets you under a curse from Almighty God. You're totally blind because you don't believe that salvation is faith alone on Christ alone (John 3:16). The whole passage of James 2 were talking to already saved people who were to justify themselves in the sight of men by showing other men their works so that other men would see the Lord. Justification before God is strictly faith on the finished work of the cross.
Mariachi153
But you will CLEARLY be like Jesus if you're surrender to Him and receive the Holy Spirit to do HIS works. Blessings in Jesus.
Did he tell the church why he is leaving ,why does Cornerstone still exist ,why didnt Francis split the church into small groups of 50 -100 people and the greater church could come together every month or 2 ?
This is the stress of Arminian theology. Thank God I was delivered from it!
@morethanimusic You are right, works does not bring Salvation. However, to listen to Chan one would think that he believes that.
Jesus taught assurance. Pastors can teach it too. His messages tend to be rather one sided. If you do not live a life of "danger," if you do not do for God you are lukewarm which = non-Christian.
Sanctification is an important part of the Christian life. Not everyone is at the same place in their walk, those that would SEEM lukewarm may just be immature.
Karen Butcher
Born again or NOT born again. That's the end all, be all issue, focus & REQUIREMENT of Jesus & THROUGH Jesus. If a man is not born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God. So, the CLEAR Truth is making CERTAIN that one becomes born again by receiving the Holy Spirit to have the power to be like Jesus. ... hating sin & turning from it & choosing Jesus instead. That's where the surrender, change & INTENSE TRANSFORMATION is APPARENT TO ALL. Blessings in Jesus.
Lot was a coward and according to the bible he was one of the Lord's people. I know Christ can make us brave but remember, we fail and act like cowards all the time in ways many don't realize. Abraham and Isaac both acted like cowards and said to their wives, "pretend your my sister so the men in the city won't kill me." Not being a coward isn't what saves us, believing on Christ as savior does.
Andy Price
We have the Holy Spirit now (New Testament/New Covenant) to make us bold, strong & fearless in Christ. Surrender is key to not quench & grieve the Holy Spirit. Everyone goes through trials & tests as we are accused & given the opportunity to prove ourselves as the Holy Spirit leads. Hallelujah! Blessings in Jesus!😊
Andy Price
No HOLY SPIRIT IN OLD TESTAMENT. BIG difference. Blessings in Jesus.
Isn't this the same guy that said he was happy to see his face on the cover of a magazine?? And who openly confessed that there was hypocrisy in the early years of his ministry?? Wow you had everybody fooled!
JESUS DIED FOR EVERYONE'S SIN.
Dusan Ilic
Sadly, not everyone receives His gift. Blessings in Jesus.
You say you do not to love to judge sinners, but then you call people who have their own sin problems who say they believe in Jesus Christ, and call them lost. Obviously you have such a high minded view of yourself and judge all the other people instead of focusing on yourself. Jesus said that if you even look at a women lustfully you are committing adultery in your heart, or if you hate your brother you are committing murder in your heart. Call a person an "idiot" you worthy of eternal death
Mariachi153
Uuum. Wow. Please study the Bible/Word of God. We are are not to judge those who are NOT believers, but we ARE to judge those who claim to be within. Jesus calls us to judge righteous judgement & give correction & reproof. Please study. Judge not, lest you be judged Scripture; I guess if you're guilty of what you're accusing others of, that really doesn't work. ...but when you are BORN AGAIN and become like Jesus, you are correcting people so that they feel convicted and I'm efforts that they won't stay in their sin so that they will ALSO become born again. That should make sense if you're thinking clearly. Blessings in Jesus.
But you go ahead and serve God out of fear and earn your way to heaven, meanwhile I'll just trust that Jesus Christ was enough to pay for all my sins and I'll serve God out of love. Also, you can tell God that you re-defined the word faith and caused your fellow "Christians" to work for their salvation. Good luck with that one.
Mariachi153
Wow. You are just blowing me away here. Scripture COMMANDS US to seek out our salvation with fear and trembling (that is reverence to the LORD). I highly encourage that you go back and take a look at the olive branches who were grafted in and TAKEN OUT. That should concern you greatly if you're flippant about sin. Blessings in Jesus.
this is so wrong on so many levels. Adding Jesus in the sentence doesn't make that sentence true
Could you be more specific?
This guy makes no sense. He preaches a theology of glory rather than a theology of the cross. Pietisitic. In his challenge to pray only for our daily bread (another video) he talks about the challenge of living simply, and in the lauds the idea of living paycheck to paycheck, and then in his mark driscoll joshua harris interview, he lauds the idea of being able to write someone a check for their hospital bill. HUH? Only people with MONEY can do that!
terriergal
The point is that he gives it all away. Blessings in Jesus.
But how will the peddlers of the gospel get paid? You mean they will have to get a real job?
boom192channel
Be careful. Your arrogance & ignorance deceive you. Pastors have one of THE most important "jobs" on the entire planet (& constant studying if they're obedient/born again). Do you constantly study & personally help others with YOUR job? Be VERY careful. Blessings to know Jesus.
shellbellbutterfly
For we are not like many, peddling the word of God, but as from sincerity, but as from God, we speak in Christ in the sight of God.
2 Corinthians 2:17 NASB
boom192channel
AMEN! The LORD desires to see His children worshiping Him in Spirit & Truth. Blessings in Jesus. 😍✝️
@@boom192channel "the Lord ordained that they who preach the gospel, should live by the gospel."
If you keep on sinning, God will forget all about you even though He said "I will never leave you nor forsake you". I mean, David is going to hell because he murdered and slept with Bathsheba and had hundreds of wives, he must have been never saved to begin with. And Solomon is going to hell because he served other Gods and had multiple wives.
Mariachi153
They were simple history (proof) that we needed/need a Savior. Hello. ... Jesus. On with the Holy Spirit already. Blessings in Jesus.
the gospel of the bible is easy-believing on the finished work of the cross. To think you have to obey God to get into heaven insults God and his blood atoning sacrifice and is blasphemy to the highest degree. We serve God out of love and wonder and to earn rewards, not out of fear or to earn our way to heaven. What a stupid unbiblical way to view God and the bible.
Mariachi153
Then you're calling Jesus a liar in John 14 where He says, "if you love Me, obey My commands and I'll show Myself to you and I'll ask the Father to give you the Holy Spirit to comfort and teach you for the rest of your days" and "you will be transformed, a new creation in Christ; the old is dead, the new is alive" and "if the Son sets you free, you are free INDEED". Freedom from sin is the whole recognition & PURPOSE of Jesus and His work on the cross. So, if you're not free and you're still a slave to sin, you haven't received the Holy Spirit and that is the only unforgivable sin; that you are not transformed, a new creation. Because you cannot see the kingdom of God unless you are born again. Those are Jesus' words. Blessings in Jesus.
Theres is reverent fear, we serve because we reverence Him...Just like Paul says " knowing the wrath of God we warn men"
When Jesus speaks in Revelation and 3 He is cautioning the church, there is that and that is love,
Better do more, God may not let you into the Kingdom of God. You must be perfect and pure and holy just like you said. If you lust just once, this must mean that you have not confessed your sins to Him, and you're still a sexually immoral person. If you watch television and play video games too much, this must mean you are a covetous person, and you were never saved to begin with. I don't think you're going to make to heaven.
Mariachi153
Something's definitely wrong if you want to sit around and watch TV and play video games, among other things like sports and other ungodly nonsense. A person who is surrendered to the Holy Spirit, cares about how they use their time. Idle time belongs to the devil. That's actually Scripture. Blessings in Jesus.
Noah must be going to hell as well because he got drunk, and Lot also because he had fellowship with the people of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Mariachi153
No because Jesus peached to those who were in prison after He died. On with the New Testament/Covenant. Blessings in Jesus.
Francis Chan always so dramatic and loves to talk about himself I I ME ME
Not really. Listen again, carefully, he is paraphrasing the words of Christ.
@@froggie219 They wouldn't know Jesus' words from the ingredients on the back of a bag of chips. They interpret any kind of necessary (commanded) works as 'earning' your salvation. When was the last time having water poured over you 'earns' anything, let alone eternal life? When was the last time doing your duty, such as forgiving others, 'earning' salvation?
"We have done only what it was our duty to do."
