Dave still used them for Megadeth
I have no idea what these songs are.
I do know ride the lightening was the title track.
@@jamesmannsfield5699 these are megadeth songs
Holy fuck I've heard my life a million times and never put that together haha
Holy shit, imnd blown, the hangar 18 call of ktulu, never put that together
Post American World from Dystopia is also the Phantom Lord.
Similarly, the descending tail on the main riff of The Punishment Due follows a similar pattern. It's a descending major third riff moving from G to E, just with the high e and b thrown in. I would be surprised if it's also a reworking of the same concept
You can really hear Dave in these riffs, they all scream his style. When you take them out of the context of the Metallica songs they all sound like Megadeth riffs.
totally agree. Call of Ktulu especially for me.
Always said the reason the first few albums was so popular is because Dave was a major part of writing them
@@nikkicartee879 He wasn't though, the first album he wrote less than half and he only wrote 2 riffs on the second. On an album of over 50 riffs this is nothing. The reason those albums are so good is because of James Kirk and cliff
@@nikkicartee879 he did write half of kill em all but in RTL he only had a couple of riffs, and the iconic intro to the title track was written by Lars.
@@imagereflection4826 I would disagree. He’s only credited for the songs your talking about. But if you’ve ever been in a band, you might have, you know that a member like Dave influences the other members a lot. This isn’t to discredit Kirk.
The breakdown in Phantom Lord straight up sounds like a Megadeth song. But being honest Dave's fingerprints are all over Kill 'Em All. At least they gave him writing credits in the liner notes.
They had to. The demos had Dave credited so he could have used that as evidence if they tried to shaft him.
he had writing credits on every album on at least one song up to and including master of puppets
imagine kicking a dude out and still using his riffs 3 albums in haha
@@1refi it's not uncommon for bands at all to use old archived riffs on their albums. Hell EVH used riff tapes from the 80's on their 2012 album. Plus it was 2 albums not 3 and the 2nd one was basically a single riff and an intro.
@@1refi He has absolutely no credits on master of puppets man check again
His fingerprints are only over 4 songs considering 3 of James's were written before he even met Dave and the other 2 are totally Hetfield style
You know I always thought Dave was bitter and should let it go... But in fairness those are some pretty important Metallica riffs. I can understand if he's still a bit sore.
Daves situation is like when you give something away that you thought was worthless only to discover later it was worth millions
@@James_whitler2006 he didn't give it away though he left it behind without a chance to retrieve them so instead he asked James and Lars to no use his material and they did anyways.
@@goodini026 Well it's tough, most were collaborations and therefore belong to the band. He had.the right to use the riffs that he wrote and Incorporate them into Megadeth songs and he did. But the songs belong to Metallica
Exactly he used the riffs anyways in Megadeth
The average viewer of Joe Rogan's massive audience would walk away from that clip with the impression that Dave wrote most of those songs, which was exactly his intention in the way he said it lol. When the reality is that he wrote around around a half-dozen (very cool) riffs, which he went on to work in to Megadeth songs anyway.
Fun fact : The Call of ctulu riff written by Dave Mustaine is actually used agian in the opening of Hangar 18
Megadeth-when is the megadeth version of call of ktulu
yeah the progression in h18 is the same but, listen to when you will understand what im saying
Don't forget, He also used the call of ktulu riff in when.
The beginning of In my darkest hour too. Same chord progression.
I just commented this too, I'm glad someone else noticed!
DUH
I never knew these riffs were Dave's but now that I know, it's totally unmistakable. They all sound like grade-A Mustaine riffs.
Yep! I remember the days of reading the CD covers and lyrics from to back and seeing "written by Dave Mustaine" on several songs.
@@marcmarc4776 on the cassettes in the 80s when it mattered he was omitted from credit.
Dave, the almighty *Lord Of The Riffs,* the chord progression in "The Call Of Cthulhu" is used again in "Hangar 18", taken to a whole different level.
A lot of people who don't really know about music only point at Dave's voice, of course he's not on James' league... But James and Kirk can only DREAM about the guitar work that has been done in Megadeth.
As much as I love a lot of Metallica's post-Dave riffs, they rarely have any of the exotic flavor that a lot of Dave's riffs have.
I feel that Dave is a more impressive singer. His vocals are quite unique. I suspect it took many years of experimenting before he got it down. You could say’s it’s semi-singing or something. On the other hand, James really made the most of the voice he has. So, I guess both men are extremely accomplished in their own way.
Dave is the shit fuck Metallica they would of been a far better band with him they all no it Megadeth kicks fucking ass
damn, he actually wrote some of the best riffs
i just realized that ending part of This Was My Life is basically Phantom Lord
And the intro of Post-American World
When you listen after decades of both bands producing material, i definitely believe Dave dreamed up those riffs.
2:17 such a classic riff and has Dave's style all over it
One of my favorite riffs ever
It's basically the wake up dead riff but not as good
@@bigassdummy46 yeah, Dave would do spider chords instead of single palm muted notes there. James just simplified that part.
Yea thats the only part of that song he wrote
I guess part of it was that he wanted those songs to use for whatever post-Metallica career he attempted, but once they put them on Kill Em All, he really was back at square one
He still made The Mechanix. I believe he would've still used his riffs without giving a shit what Metallica would say
It was two songs bro. What do you mean square one? Lol
Meh. All the Megadeth songs that incorporated whatever riffs were also present on Kill 'Em All or Ride the Lightning ended up being way better. Mechanix has better energy than The Four Horsemen, which is really the most important element of these early-era albums. I certainly know which crowd I would've rather been in back in those days.
Flash Forward a few years and Hangar 18 absolutely shits all over The Call of Ktulu; you know what's more bitchin' than a band trying to write some "epic", mysterious-sounding track that is kind of beyond their abilities to actually do well? Hearing Marty Friedman rip off numerous solos that all have the sickness dialed up to 11.
@@canman87 I have no idea what you're trying to say.
@@nomnom112 Your lack of reading comprehension is not my problem.
holy hell that tone is insane
Like literally ten times better than the albums they came from lol
I remember when I fist learned Hangar 18 I was like "hey these are the same exact chords from call of Ktulu" .
In my darkest hour too.
Probably the best tone out of any one of these ‘compilation’ YT guitarists
The AXE FX helps..
I knew all the story between Metallica and Mustaine, but I hadn’t realized wow those are legit Mustaine signature riffs.
great riffing man, finally someone who played my all time favorite metallica riff, jump in the fire
Dude I’m glad I’ve found someone else who appreciates Jump in The Fire. Most underrated Metallica song and one of their best overall imo
After hearing all these riffs played back to back you can really tell they were written by Dave especially songs like Jump in the Fire. There’s that frantic quality to the Jump in the Fire riff that screams Dave Mustaine.
Same. I've known what his riffs are all this time but seeing and hearing them played side by side in a video like this just really does his contributions justice.
Lepper Messiah is also Mustaine's. It was a song called a The Hills Run Red. And, while I can't prove it, I'm almost certain Mustaine has some writing credit in Damage, Inc.
Neither of these are true, leper Messiah has a vaguely similar chord progression on the bridge and that's it and damage inc has absolutely nothing to do with Dave. In fact Kirk wrote a few riffs on that song and you can tell
@@imagereflection4826 leper Messiah is true. I watched an interview of Mustaine talk about him confronting Lars over this song. Came straight from Mustaine's mouth.
@@DavidQuinones69 Exactly, it came straight from Mustaines mouth, we all know how much Dave had bended and warped the truth over the years so take everything he says with a pinch of salt.
All the best riffs. I always found Dave really nice and engaging
Nice to see this put together. Thank you!
Ride The Lightning is my favorite Metallica song of all time and when I found out Dave had helped write it I was like oh that makes sense

You've got those highly relaxed looking fingers when playing. That's a gift. And your pinky looks like it's in business for itself, playing so independent. Strong fingers!
you can tell they’re his when they’re all played back to back. so smoooooth :’)
I love Megadeth especially the first five albums. But Metallica slowing down Mechanix into The Four Horsemen was one change I felt made the song way better.
Nah
That’s funny, I thought the opposite, I think the faster pace of mechanix makes it way better
Metallicas lyrics about the tour horsemen and the fact they played the galloping type riff at 2 minutes more times is why i like their version a little more. Mechanix sounds better but it was shorter and the lyrics didnt hit like Metallicas
@@noahbeebe6138 everyone has their own preference.
Absolutely.
There's Dave's side of the story, then there's metallica's side of the story. The truth is somewhere in between. His words, not mine
It's funny, he actually wrote hangar 18 very similarly to call of ktulu. Anyone that can play the hangar 18 intro will know what I'm talking g about. Cool that he saved those chords for another song
Damn, the finish on that guitar is pristine 😮
I think metal militia sounds the most like Dave’s style but these are all terrific riffs.
Metallica wouldn't be where they are today if it wasn't for Dave Mustaine. LONG LIVE THE KING DAVE MUSTAINE

Thank you Dave for writing these riffs🙏
Kill ‘‘em all still my favorite album to this day from Metallica just the pure thrash behind it. It was raw and in your face from beginning to end
Dave actually wrote all of the music for phantom lord and metal militia as well as call of chtulu
He didn't write all of all of ktulu
@@imagereflection4826 yes he did. He had even titled it When Hell Freezes Over but James wanted to change the name after reading Lovecraft.
@@Voyvoda78 No call of ktulu has 11 riffs on the song and Dave wrote 1 and part of another. The song was a collaboration between James, cliff and Dave it also has a great lead melody written by kirk
@@imagereflection4826 the entire intro of the song is the bulk of the song. Hangar 18 and the song When by Megadeth features these chord patterns and progressions. Lars even said that Mustaine was the main songwriter of Ktulu.
@@Voyvoda78 The Intro riff is James, the second riff is Dave with added parts from cliff and the third riff is Daves. The fourth riff which is played a lot of James then it goes back to Daves etc then back to riffs James wrote. Kirk wrote those great melody leads and obviously the solo. It is very collaborative and is wrong to say he wrote the whole song. Dave even said he was proud to have his riff on such an epic musical piece
How the hell does one get over that? These riffs are insanely good.
Good stuff!! 😁🤘
I never really listened to much of the early early Metallica stuff...but I've heard bits and pieces of these songs over the years. But like the guy below me said, taken out of context, you can DEFINITELY tell these are Dave's riffs. They're oozing his type of riff writing and it's pretty obvious.
You can here the similarities in Ride the Lightning and Holy Wars.
I also hear the spider chord riff in wake up dead near the end
Hook in mouth has the sliding riff too
phantom lord sounds just like this was my life from countdown to extinction
Cause it is 🤘🏻 Dave used lots of his riffs on Megadeth songs. Hanger 18 n darkest hour used call of ktulu riffs
He used the exact same chord progression from Call of Ktulu in Hanger 18 intro. Fun to play around with..
That guitar looks real sweet !
He got his credits on the records!
After many reprints, yes.
@@DankoHidalgo No. He was credited on all pressings. You can literally view images of the original pressing online. Stop talking crap.
@@DankoHidalgo He was credited and paid form day 1.
You can easily find pictures of the first pressings with his name on and Dave boasted in an interview on 1984 that he "gets paid for 2 bands"
James and Lars always made sure he got paid his royalties and songwriting credits from Kill 'Em All and even gave him a songwriting credit on Ride the Lightning even though I've seen him say in an interview that he didn't contribute much to Ride the Lightning.
That wasn’t until years later though

Metal Milita is literally Dave's baby lmao
Such a good thrash song n riff. Jump in the fire too
Yeah that sounds like Holy wars in an alternate universe lmao. Holy wars is better cause of the groovy blues progression the 3notes consecutive riffs on the opening.
Funny that Hetfield has played these riffs live on stage probably 10x more often than Dave himself...
The only ones I really liked are four horseman and ride the lightning. The second riff in ride The lightning you played is probably one of my favorite riffs of all. Time. I am still glad they gave him the boot.
Dave's stuff was always the best. After Cliffs contributions were gone that band was finished
This is a pathetic comment, ben 😅 how is the band finished lol
Yes metallica was finished after Dave left. But according to the financial report, when he left they all dirt poor and now they all have more than 100 mils each but Dave claims recently he has to sell his gears to pay off debt. You must be very good accountant.
Cliff very few contributions and Dave's haha. The two guys that wrote the least. You people live in a fantasy world

The Last part of Phantom Lord, it's This Was My Life, the rhythm it's the same
That Phantom Lord lick is just so MMMMMMMM
If I had a "What If" machine, I'd like to see how Metallica's music would have turned out if the lineup had remained Hetfield, Ulrich, Mustaine, and Burton.
Remove the ego & you have the sickest metal band ever known, but probably would've remained unknown to the status quo, kinda like Slayer. Can guarantee no fucking St Anger.
Terrible probably. Better that there were two bands.
There probably would have been far less of it, that's for sure. I can't imagine Dave and Lars **wouldn't** have been butting heads the whole time; I think you'd be exceedingly lucky to get three albums out of that lineup.
Remove mustaine and I think metallica would have been twice as good. RIP Cliff. Cliff arguably brought more musicality to the band and he was easier to get along with.
Fun Fact: Mustaine also wrote all Slayer, Anthrax and Testament songs.
And your favorite band, Butthurt.
Wow you've got a kicking soundboard. it was incredible
EXCELLENT.
Iirc Dave wrote for Metal Militia the riff immediately after the one you played. I'm not sure he wrote the latter or Ride The Lighting's main riff for that matter.
He wrote the verse riff on ride the lightning
Yep 👍🏼
according to dave he did write the verse riff for ROTL
They are very good riffs, but if Dave was still there for Ride the Lightning and MOP it just wouldn’t have been the same. And most of those riffs were Kill Em All riffs so Dave was there when they made those songs. U can’t rly say they “stole” those
Positive is that there are two great bands with great music!!
Makes sense because that call of ktulu intro is very similar to a part of Hanger 18
He gets credit for writing those riffs though, he's credited on the albums and receives royalties for them.
Nope not at all, the first record of Metallica Dave wrote all the solos and a part of the second record and a song of the third and what Metallica did ?
They credit Mustaine if four song of the first and two in the second !!
@@idirdavid874 Like I said, he's credited on the songs he wrote and receives royalties. Dave wasn't even a member of Metallica for a full year, James, Lars were together in 81', you think they didn't write a single song until Dave showed up?
I mean, none of us were there so who REALLY knows. But it's public information that Mustaine gets $500k per year from Metallica for touring royalties because they play songs live that he's credited with writing. It's also public record that Mustaine has received $4 million + in royalties from record sales or KeA and RTL. Not bad for only being in a band for 11 months, and only writing on their 6th and 9th best selling albums.
Ellifson has even said that Mustaine didn't get ripped off by Metallica. Ellifson and Lars remained friends the whole time, so I'm sure he was privy to a lot of conversations. Lars even went to Megadeth shows to support them.
In the end, the difference in money that Mustaine would be making if he were credited on every song on Kill em All is a drop in the hat compared to what he's already earned from Metallica and what he already earns from Megadeth royalties, its simply not worth it to either party to care about it at this point. It would be the equivalent of you getting bent out of shape because your buddy owes you $20 from a few years ago.
@@patrickfouhy9102 he had to sue and wasnt credited until after the 80s when it really mattered. They fucked him without the courtesy of a reach around.
Some say he even wrote Lux Æterna.
Haha yea some guy threw a joke into a megadeth fan forum to see how far it would fly and wow has it
Even the songs that havent been released or even written, where made by Dave. Everyone knows that.
@brunofreitas9314 it's a well known fact that Dave wrote the lines of code for the simulation we're living in
@@brunofreitas9314 lol
To be fair, as great as Ktulu is, it’s the lesser instrumental of the three great ones, imo. 1) Orion 2) To Live is to Die 3) Call of Ktulu (again, all great).
Bro sick,
crazy that you only showcased 20 songs out of all the others he’s written singlehandedly, which is every song that exists.
You can how much he truly influenced James’ play.
He didn't
@Mirror Image James was a singer first, he doodled on guitar whilst Dave was in the band as lead guitarist. Dave's playing absolutely rubbed off on hetfield, and Dave was impressed by how much he improved, which gave James confidence to play guitar as well as sing. Both Dave and James have told this story already. Guess your to butt hurt to believe, but facts don't care about your feelings boy.
@@geoffreyharvey No you mean Dave has told that story so many times. Which should tell you a lot considering his tendency to distort and falsify the past. James had been playing guitar for 6 years before he met Dave had written 3 metallica songs before he met Dave and they even had a release of one of those songs before he met Dave.
James has said many times that he wanted for a time to be like Sean Harris and that singer/guitarists were unusual in metal but he still wrote on guitar and played at rehearsals. After a few shows and a failed try out with a second guitarist he went back on to guitar with vocals.
James had his style before he met Dave and in fact If Dave hadnt met Lars and his huge knowledge of a plethora of underground European proto thrash bands then Dave's style wouldn't exist.
So there's your history lesson and stop projecting it's cringe.
@@imagereflection4826 bullshit! bend over for lars and James like a grovelling lemming..... that's cringe my guy, you sound like a Trump supporter.
Wtf 😂 everything you said is false, Dave Mustaine was listening heavy stuff before he joined and Lars hired him cuz they share the same knowledge of bands, and he knew a lot of bands they liked. But his style was a lot more thrashy that’s why they kept telling him to slow down stuff, you’re dumb.
both bands are amazing. deal with it!
great sound and video quality-
some of the stuff you're playing is incorrect, my friend. don't take it the wrong way.
just to point out a few:
1) the downward chromatic riff in Ride The Lightning is played using Dave's spider chord method (he shows this himself)
2) in Call of Ktulu, the last note in measure 57 right before going into measure 58, is an open high E string, not a high A
Only Dave would cry about getting royalties from Metallica ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
F@cking nailed it
Even if Dave Mustaine didnt do Megadeth, the moment I learned that he wrote "Call of Ktulu"....he is fucking legend .
I think what people need to keep in mind is that these riffs were written in conjunction with a group collaboration (band). These riffs were a product of what they all worked on together. Ideas that bounced off 3 other people and morphed into the final product.
Really? What was Metallica doing before Dave mustaine? Diamond head covers right they didn't have a band Till Dave came along hell they had a spot on a metal mag with out no demo tape at the time Dave was the driving force of Metallica his riffs his shredd everything was easy to steal someone's talent and kick them out because you wanted to be famous I like James I think Lars was Jealous of the bond that Dave n James had I think Metallica would of been even better if they kicked out Lars but anyways Dave was the start of Metallicas sound later cliff was carrying the band then worn he died Metallica went to shit and sold out there fans I think were they really went to shit is when they were working with that divk face Bob Rock they were done then and never recovered now they sound like a hard Rock band with the history of once been grate

Dave is always a technical player 😎
Wasn't there a riff on Master of Puppets that was supposedly Dave's?
Leper Messiah
@@thedancingguy828 which he lied about
@@wizstorm172 I dunno, because there is a riff pretty similar to it in the Ron´s Garage record
No that's Kirk made men, Dave just always crying 😂🤣😂
@@thedancingguy828 Nah, the riff he claims is Kirk´s. saddly, Dave is a known liar
Basically, Dave is the reason anyone loved Metallica in the early days..
Nah, he helped write a few of the weaker songs. Metallicas best songs don't have anything to do with him
that cap and you know it 😂
so how’d they get more popular without him? make it make sense bozo
