James and Lars write the songs. Kirk and the bass player (whoever he may be) give them riffs on tape (or on mp3 or whatever) which they'll incorporate into the songs. As for the second part, Kirk didn't play rhythm on record until Load. Up to and including the black album, James played all the rhythm parts regardless of who wrote them.

Never knew Kirk wrote that breakdown riff in "Through the Never". That's always been my favorite part of the song. Same thing with the ending riff for "Bleeding Me". Maybe I need to rethink Kirk's placement in my ranking of metal guitarists.

My guilty pleasure during my "I hate Metallica now, because they sold out" years! It was so poppy, radio friendly, and un thrash-like, I wanted to hate it, but just couldn't help loving it from my first listen. Definitely my favorite song released between Justice and Death Magnetic. It's just a perfect, infectious, feel-good riff. The funny thing is, three riffs into this video, I just KNEW it had to be a Kirk riff. James never strays that far from his comfort zone. After over 25 years, I'm finally ready to admit it: HERO OF THE DAY IS A GREAT FREAKING SONG, AND I LOVE IT!!!
Load and Reload were pushed by Lars and Kirk. Kirk is also a big blues guy, so it's no surprise that a lot of the riffs are blues based on those albums.

Kirk Hammett is my personal favorite guitarist. He's certainly shown us over the years that Metallica has existed that he knows what he's doing. He had his own style of playing in my opinion and I'm alright with that.
He also wrote the early version of the master of puppets 2nd intro riff when he was in exodus. I read something years ago that he mentions that and sure enough I found the demo. I even did a quick video comparing them. No doubt it was tightened up by JH.
As I know, James writes that part (it is riff tapes, just power chords) than kirk comes and writes the riff he plays. Kirk has no credit 'cause, I guess, it is not a new section for the song.

While this Battery riff and the CD are only a repeated a few times, the CD riff plays a big role in the song compared to this one. If that makes any sense.
John Frusciante, Kirk Hammet and David Gilmour were the people who inspiring me to play guitar. I remember the first time I listen solos like Ride The Lightning, Creeping Death, Master Of Puppets, Blackened, One, Enter Sandman o The Unforgiven. Kirk is a awesome musician
Great playing man. Kirk wrote some of the best Metallica riffs honestly. He also wrote the ending melodic riff in Fade to Black (he talked about it in two different interviews) and the 2nd riff in Master of Puppets (it sounds very similar to a riff he had on the Exodus demo song Death and Domination).
His good riffs are amazing and have such a unique feel to them; they have power, move around the fret-board, there is usually a groove to them and a nasty melody. They are exceptionally good and important to metal music. but so few people know they are even his. I think if he stayed in Exodus or was more active in Metallica he would be considered a riff master, and we would have so much more quality music to enjoy.
I think even without Metallica he wouldn't have stayed in Exodus long. He's too much of a melodic player by nature, and I think he would have felt stifled by being in a thrash purist band. If nothing else he would have started some kind of blues side project like Alex Skolnik did with his jazz band.
I'm glad to see a good representation of Load in this video. People hated it when it came out and like ok fine, it's no Master or Justice or even Black...but the run in the middle of the album from Until it Sleeps to King Nothing to Hero of the Day to Bleeding Me to Cure...awesome. And I like Wasting my Hate a lot too. And Outlaw Torn is obviously outstanding. Like...I get it that at this point most people have come around and realize it's a really good album but like HOLY SHIT, it's a really good album!

I can understand why so many tabbers tab a C5. James actually plays it when they’re tracking guitar on the studio cut. You can see it in the year and half part one documentary at about the 37 minute mark where James’ father Virgil is watching him play.

Amazing video and playing. I'm glad to find out Kirk wrote many of those riffs. However, I can't help but doubt some of them. Because first of all, usually when Kirk writes a riff, especially if it's from a major hit by Metallica, the band members talk about it because it's usually James who writes all of their massive riffs. How did you figure out which ones he wrote? The second thing I wonder about is the Battery riff before the solo, because Kirk doesn't have song writing credits there, at least not per Wikipedia.
Not to be all conspiratorial but i think Lars and James(especially Lars) try to keep the image of Metallica pretty solid with the narrative that James wrote most of the classic riffs, kinda throwing Kirk and other past members under the bus. (yes, i think they are assholes like that)

How did you figure out which ones he wrote? The second thing I wonder about is the Battery riff before the solo, because Kirk doesn't have song writing credits there, at least not per Wikipedia.
Not to be all conspiratorial but i think Lars and James(especially Lars) try to keep the image of Metallica pretty solid with the narrative that James wrote most of the classic riffs, kinda throwing Kirk and other past members under the bus. (yes, i think they are assholes like that)

The Battery bridge riff is written by James, it's already in his very first demotape of the song and in fact Kirk is not credited on the album!

A) wrote some of the most popular metal riffs ever: Master of Puppets, Enter Sandman, etc.
B) Is the lead guitarist and plays most of the solos (does james actually solo anything else than nothing else matters?)
C) Its Kirk! He's the lazy straight A student as somebody said. How can you not like him for being such a smart ass?
I think James also does the second solo on Orion, which is a nice expressive solo
