Each time John posts a video he leads more people out of this deceptive cult. Thank you, John!
Richard Holmes are you serious? Scholars in Egyptology agree that Smith was a fraud. BYU professors are the only ones defending that bullshit anymore. Even your own church admits in its gospel topics essays that it isn’t translated from the scrolls.
@@henaultsr haha
@@henaultsr why don't you share the link kid?
I hope you're right, but in my experience, people can only lead themselves out when they are ready. It has to come from within, usually.
Richard Holmes maybe it’s the power company?
There are so many bizarre things that comes out of mormon history that I cease to be amazed. Thank you so much John for keeping such a large organization honest.
Dr. Dehiln is an expert in Mormon theology and history. His research and contacts are so important to understanding Mormonism and the LDS culture. Thanks for your works Dr. Dehlin so very interesting and appreciated.
It's so odd to think I was always taught that Emma's dad didn't like Joseph because of the church... I dont know about you, but I wouldn't want my daughter marrying a treasure digger either
Love this new format! I like the photos and the detailed information given. So helpful to understand things more deeply and see many years of research presented in a concise way.
It being the participants' fault,if the treasure was not found, reminds me of praying about the Book of Mormon. If you don't get a testimony(the burning in the bosom)that it is true, then it's your fault, you did something wrong, weren't praying earnestly enough, etc.
Great video,John.Concise, short and to the point.Keep 'em comin'! Thank you!!
My first year of seminary (back in 2018 through 2019), we were taught that Joseph translated The Book of Mormon using the golden plates. No seer stone was mentioned. The church has been deceiving people about this since it's inception, and it's STILL deceiving people to this day.
John, next please do how the BOM was actually "translated" or whatever they say actually was🙄. I can't wait to share these. Thanks a lot John
Faithful members give 10% without question. That is why the GA will never tell the truth or apologize.
Lisa Adams it is why President Nelson constantly pushes temple..you have to pay your 10 percent to get in. It is blackmail.
david henault you have not been to the temple then.
JEM Seven yes the government will not do anything to the church unless it poses a threat as you said Scientology meets their specs 😂.
@@kateym7836 not to the faithful members.
JS because a treasure digger pretty much out of nessesity. A nessesity to put food on his table. Not much to it, he found a way to make ends meet, even if it wasn't an honest way of dealing business. However, TBMs will overlook this because it was before "the lord" called him to "serve". Dishonesty and lack of integrity runs in the lds institution, great video.
They will also overlook the fact that the original motive for writing the BOM was to put food on the table as well. The plan was to sell it. Only problem was nobody wanted to buy it and they lost a lot of money in the printing. Joseph even "received a revelation" that they should go sell the copyright in Canada LOL. That "revelation" did not pan out. Was that just God being a practical joker w/ Joseph? :|
@@chubbuck35 God is quite the joker first Lot then Joseph.
Treasure digging was the equivalent of the MLM Pyramid Scheme of the 18th and 19th Century.
The Corporation has got to be sorry they excommunicated you. Truth is their Kryptonite.
@@richardholmes7199 who knew that if you refused to stop telling the truth you could be. The Mormon church is nothing but pathological Liars who demand obedience while making you jump through ridiculous hoops.
@@richardholmes7199
A lot of times all it takes to be excommunicated is telling the truth about the church, or asking the wrong questions.
@@richardholmes7199
Pretty much.
@@richardholmes7199 I was hoping you would have found your way out of the cult by now, Richard. I'm taking it your the one "dislike" of this video.
@@richardholmes7199 Oh no! You've pulled the plug. I guess the church is true now. Gag
Some rocks or stones can be fascinating. I have a beautiful carved wooden bust of Joseph Smith that I received as a gift. Next to it, I keep a collection of interesting stones, similar in size to the "Seer Stone", to remind me that fraud is a part of the legacy of Mormonism, both in the early 1800's and continuing in our day. This video is well done and is much easier to understand that reading the book from D. Michael Quinn, "Early Mormonism and the Magic World View". Thank you Dr. Dehlin for your work.
This information is so accurate and so clear! It took me years to assimilate all of these facts. I love how bite size and interesting you are making these thoughts. I am so impressed, John! Thank you!
Thank you for creating a source that is simply interested in the truth about Mormonism. It’s hard to sift through the whitewashing from church sources and it is nice to have a resource as I look into these issues.
These “back to basics” videos are especially important these days. Folks aren’t getting brainwashed several times a week & twice on Sundays, so they’re more apt to look at their shelves & ask questions. Questions they can find truthful answers to on the internets!
John, I’ve always appreciated your helpful knowledge and onsite on these matters. Gives me hope and comfort
Thanks Bryce!
because it is pleasing to the denouncing mind.
Well done as always Dr. Dehlin. It is so enjoyable following your journey over the years, from so kind hearted, careful, gentle to....well..maybe a little perturbed about this whole shit show. I was once so kind and humble when I returned from my mission in 1980, but the world stomped all over me until I hardened up :( Now I'm too abrasive to help people out of Mormonism and my family is HUGE, 500 active mormons at least at our reunions on just one side. I've read so many books, 1000's of hours over the years...so much time invested with so little success.
Informative and right to the facts 👍 great format !
Old Joe done dug up a 100 billion dollar treasure with his fake stone 😂.
$100 billion in stock in one fund, add all
The other stock funds, for profit businesses, and physical assets and you can easily quadruple that valuation
I think joseph smith was trying to obtain fame for finding the ultimate treasure...a golden book. However, since he never really had one to show as proof he created this grand story to try and make it real. It snowballed into the story that we now know.
Was treasure digging fraudulent? Let's dig in to the treasures today's episode has to offer and find out 👑💰
“Their beliefs aren’t foiled by their lack of success.” Treasure digging sounds a lot like praying.
It's unfortunate to see how so many miss out on a knowledge of God due to Mormonism. Don't knock prayer just because you haven't experienced answers to prayer.
I was told he wrote the book of Mormon using this seer stone. That was another clue to me that this was all bogus.
John I love your youtube videos! Keep these up! Sharing them with all my exmo friends!
we were born and raised in the LDS church but then we discovered something that was so humiliating because my wife has brown skin and she is Mexican so that makes her a Lamanite, a sister missionary said my wife is cursed with filthy ugly skin according to 2 Nephi 5 :21 to 24. so we have filed a lawsuit to have the Book of Mormon banned in Australia for racial vilification here is the video of the sister missionary calling my wife cursed with filthy ugly brown skin ruclips.net/video/cEh03fericc/видео.html
Love the channel and production too!
These videos have been excellent. I love how all the information is quickly presented yet thoroughly cited.
One observation, and I'm absolutely sure I'm of the minority here, but I can see apologists quickly retaliating to this channel with 'John Dehlin is using his PhD in psychology to give a false sense of authority on historical topics that he has no professional expertise on!'
Although this is ad hominem, many TBMs will consider this a valid argument against your videos. Just a thought.
Interesting! Let me think about that!!! The truth is, this channel wil be about more than history, and I do have a legitimate PhD, but let me ponder on it!

"...most damning evidence..."
Yes, it certainly is. It's one of the important details that finally broke my shelf.
I love this wonderful format. It is easy t o digest and easy to understand. I would take a slide and do a reference page for the pictures and quotes you use. I realize you have a reference, but not where you sourced the information and material. Like a book, and article, etc... Love you!
Usually it’s easy to just type part of the quote on google and you can find it pretty fast!
Gerardo Sumano Very true! I’m doing my masters right now so references are on my brain. Can’t get away from them in school.
Didn't fully appreciate how well Franklin described the work of Joseph Smith.
Where can I find the Peter Ingersoll quote?
Thanks John valuable work! Keep it going sir.
It's a pretty rock. Looks like it is made of sedimentary layers.
I was reading somewhere that geologists said that stone was common to Wyoming, but didnt exist in the region where Smith obtained it. If geology is correct, the church is displaying a rock that didnt belong to Smith. Its been suggested that the stone may have been found by a pioneer church member passing through Wyoming on their journey to Utah.
Thank u for ur honesty! Subscribed
Damning indeed. Thank you John 🙏🏻
I can not love this video enough. So we’ll done! Great job John.
Sticking his head in a hat !! Soooo Funny. How do people believe this crap ?
First, great video - hit the high points with easily digestible information. The testimony given by Josiah Stowell (i think?) during Joseph's trial describing the dig would have been perfect to fit in somewhere to emphasize how perfectly it matched Franklin's description. The spirits guarding the treasure, it slipping further down, the fact Stowell was giving this testimony to DEFEND Joseph, showing how much he believed in it, etc.
Other than that my only critique is it felt a little jarring at the end with the shift from money digging to using the peep stone to translate the plates. A person unfamiliar with it might be caught off guard by the transition if they are learning all of this for the first time. As you point out, the stone in the hat wasn't talked about much prior to 2015 :-).
I'm assuming the translation process will be it's own video, in it I think showing the gradual shift from scrying for money digging to scrying to translate should be explained and that the people involved were both used to the scrying process and highly religious and wouldn't see a problem with the connection.
That's great feedback. Thank you. And yes...we plan on the translation process being its own video.
coliostro1006 - Please email me at understandmormonism@gmail.com. I'd love your feedback and help with future episodes if you wanna!
of course any discussion about money digging presupposes the validity of very questionable witnesses. Some of which literally said they wanted to wash their hands with the blood of Joseph.
I guess that makes sense on that TV show Oak Island But I still believe Joseph Smith is a prophet He has a sketchy moment I guess but I know he knew to not joke around if he saw a God
This is a good video John but... I think it's over-reaching to classify Jeremy Runnels as a scholar.
Agree he is just a diligent advocate for truth, Dan Vogel on the other hand is a great scholar!
Rock on John.
I cant remember the name of the one guy he was working for but he trusted joseph enough later that he joined the church. That says a lot. Emma was the only daughter and of course daddy woudnt like joseph. From brigham to nelson i have my doubts but i still feel there was something right about joseph. I have watched too many videos lately of people who have done serious research that disproves a lot of the garbage on joseph. The mormon church has thrown joseph under the bus in favor of brigham and has made him their great leader. Joseph had a revelation that said if the navoo telmple wasnt finished by a certain time then the members along with there dead would be damned. It didnt get finished. How do people study the d and c and not get it. The same with the book of mormon. There is bunch of stuff in there telling us what the condition of the church would be when Christ returns.
❤️
So wrong that they excommunicated those people for speaking the truth when they lied about it all these years!
Daniel C Peterson has a movie called Witlesses out about the BoM Witless fools, Joseph doesn’t put his head all the way in the hat because Peterson knows how ridiculous it looks on video lol!

Left CHRISTIANITY, THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS, refused to repent, from personal sins, & make excuses.
I know you do a lot research. Now if you really want to do some good then you need to tell the people about nelson having aligngning with the skull and bones and owl and key in college at u of u. Learn what the rhodes scholar really is the let them know that oaks is a rhodes scholar. Great people we have at the head of the church. I have more if you want to hear it.
It wasnt illegal bexause he wasnt pretending
Im pretty sure he wanted to believe he could but it never worked. Which is why Joseph later said he couldnt or ever could.
He thought it was working, but it never worked, Hense why he said he was fooled into it. Or it didn't work the way he thought it should. He never intended to decieve.
Brendan Wilson so when he said he saw treasure with his stone in his hat, he actually saw treasure? Or was he lying about seeing it?
@@shawnbradford2243 I think he think's he mightv'e seen something, or he believed he did at the time. Or he did but it never seemed to be their. i don't have any idea, cause im not him. I don't think he was lying, i think we was decieved. and felt bad for telling others he could.
@@Herosoulstone then how come he told his future father in law it was all a lie? Have you do any research into this topic? There is lot of period records. I highly recommend Dan Vogel on RUclips
God wouldnt leave the treasure there because it would be sold vandalised and mocked like your doing it was sacred only an active christian would understand these things by the Holy Spirit in the bible a donkey spoke and a rod turned into a snake the sea parted and the Israelite walked through God works in mysterious ways ask yourself where did i come from why am i hear and where am i going
All of these third party people are saying things as hearsay. That’s not admissible in court
The church acknowledges now that Joseph was convicted as a treasure digger. Not hearsay. This is no longer in dispute even by the church.
@@UnderstandingMormonism you quoted other people who say he used a Peep Stone.

I know that you are passionate about your cause and rightly so, however I feel like in your excitement to get the truth out you are yelling, which could be counterproductive... just say'n. With that said, the info presents was excellent. Perhaps you can get someone to link up the citations in the description notes simply to empower truth.
