    Metallica (S&M) - Fuel
    • Video
S&M contains performances of Metallica songs with additional symphonic accompaniment, which was composed by Michael Kamen, who also conducted the orchestra during the concert. The idea to combine heavy metal with an epic classical approach, as James Hetfield stated repeatedly, was an idea of Cliff Burton. Burtons love of classical music, especially of Johann Sebastian Bach, can be traced back to many instrumental parts and melodic characteristics in Metallicas songwriting including classics from Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets.
In addition to songs from previous albums spanning Ride the Lightning through ReLoad, there are two new compositions: "No Leaf Clover" and "−Human", as well as a symphonic cover of "The Ecstasy of Gold" by Ennio Morricone. "No Leaf Clover" has since been performed by Metallica in concert, using a recording of the orchestral prelude.
Several other songs, including "Wasting My Hate", "The Unforgiven", and "Fade To Black", were considered for selection, but were eventually dropped as it was decided by both Metallica and Michael Kamen that they weren't well suited for symphonic accompaniment.
Changes were made to the lyrics of some songs, most notably the removal of the second verse and chorus of "The Thing That Should Not Be".
The "S" in the stylized "S&M" on the album cover is a backwards treble clef, while the "M" is taken from Metallica's iconic logo. "S&M", which ostensibly stands for "Symphony & Metallica" is a play on words referring to Sadomasochism, which is often abbreviated as "S&M".

James sounds fantastic in this show. Such a good mix of oldschool aggression with the vocal technique he started learning in the late 80s and early 90s. Also yeah S&M2 was 20 years later in 2019. Talk about time flying damn.

This concert literally changed my musical life. When it first came out, VH-1 kept advertising a special showing parts of the show. It made me laugh because I thought it was a joke. A metal band and an orchestra? How would that even work?? It should be noted that I never listened to Metallica before this. Metal just wasn't my thing.
So I tuned in out of curiosity and had my brain melted by what I saw and heard. I got the VHS for it as soon as it came out and Metallica has become one of my favorite bands of all time ever since.
I saw them the next year at the old Texas Stadium in Dallas during the Summer Sanitarium tour. Korn, Kid Rock, System of a Down and Powerman 5000 opened. James Hetfield injured his back, so Jason Newstead filled in on vocals for much of it, but Jonathan Davis and Kid Rock sang on some of the songs while all the bands had members sit in on some.
Kid Rock sang "Sad But True" and worked "American Bad As$" into it and did turntables on "Fuel". Korn even did "Earache My Eye" with Jason! Utterly epic.

This is the first s&m concert with Michael Kamen conducting. Sadly he passed in 2003. He worked with a lot of bands and did scores for a lot of movies.

There is a brief moment at 7:02, right before Kirk's solo that is my favorite from this whole concert. There is a shot of the crowd with an older guy who looks dressed up for the symphony bobbing his head next to a young metal head who is head banging. Music brings people together, doesn't matter age or location. Beautiful!

The S&M really shone when some of the less appreciated songs showed to be masterpieces: Hero of the Day, Bleeding me (amazing performance) and Outlaw torn which really just blew me off my feet, it was OUTSTANDING.

Please do the opening songs from this concert. "The Ecstasy of Gold" / "Call of Ktulu" / "Master of Puppets" all hang together as one awe-inspiring musical experience that will blow your minds.
Yeah, it's long. So? Have anything better to do? I think not! ))

@@ianwakers my Dude says they are edited just because No leaf clover had some edition lmfao dude no shit No leaf clover was a brand new single by the time, its obvious they had to edit that song to adapt it to studio sound. the rest of it is how good james vocals were in 1999. He had to go as clean as he could because is a Symphonic concert, sherlock.

S&M was actually my first Metallica experience, outside of what I'd heard on radio. And I loved metal, I just never got into them. When I heard the studio version of "Fuel" a few months later, I was kind of disappointed that it didn't have the same energy as the S&M performance. But I loved it so much that my wife and I went to see the S&M2 theatrical release in 2019, 20 years after the initial concert took place. It wasn't as well-mixed or well-balanced as this one, and some of the arrangements were different (maestro Michael Kamen, who wrote the arrangements for the first one, had since passed), but man, it still rocked pretty stinking hard. Highly recommend buying both, if you haven't already.
