James best vocal performance ever! And that 90's live metallica sound overall was flawless. SO F*****G HEAVY.
Yeah, but still the vocals were re-recorded in the studio (first two choruses show it)
Yes but James used autotune on this album you need listen carefully to the only vocal version
@@shortman3980Do you even know what autotune is?..Please explain..
@@dizzle7558 It is a plug-in that corrects the intonation problem (the off the tone) in the soloist or instrument channels.
@@shortman3980 Just checking..That sounds about right actually..Didn't that come out a year or two before they performed this?
Thats the legendary Michael Kamen orchestrating the whole show. He was literally one of the best arranger of orchestra for so many bands, specially to mention Pink Floyd (u can hear it all in comfortably numb). Metallica and San Francisco symphony collaborated in thie concert in '99 titled S&M and most recently S&m -2 . Unfortunately we lost Kamen in 2004 otherwise we could have seen more from him.
This whole concert is itself legendary. And this song is one of the best off it .
Good reaction !!
He did the score for Robin Hood prince of Thieves too, one of my favorite scores.
Imagine if Kamen was still around today and got to help S&M 2....HOW AWESOME WOULD THAT HAVE BEEN?!?!
@@MetallicaLive Unfortely Michael Kamen dead some couple year back
This song was especially written for the show . Which is why it sounds flawless
9:41 NO, darling, that wasn't an effect. That was James' pure vocal skill.
The whole S&M album is excellent.
The outlaw torn of this same concert is a masterpiece
Absolute one of their top 3 live performance EVER. And thats saying something!
Metallica with Jason were at the absolute top of their live game at this time. It used to blow my mind that this song only exists as a live track, not having a studio recording, but honestly, it doesnt need the studio treatment….this, right here, is perfect.
actually this song exist studio recorded but it has never seen the daylight yet, maybe some day
i know this from i think behind the scenes lars says that the song was recorded 2 years prior to the show so maybe they saved song to release it only live as exlusive thing for sm idk
It's because the song was written for that show with Micheal Kamen. They the basic riff of the song via jam sessions and they sat down with Micheal and the chose to write this and - human.
The song was not specifically written for the orchestra.
James states that the song was already written but incomplete at the time and felt it was the best song that the orchestra could add something new to it.
That's a great observation and you're so right. It's so perfectly performed that it's one of those rare songs you never even wonder what a studio version would sound like. I hadn't even thought about it until I read your comment and this record is like 20 years old.
it's their best song IMO
Metallica did a 20 year anniversary with the orchestra in 2019 and filmed the whole live show. I highly recommend reacting to "the day that never comes" from S&M 2
I was there for S&M2, it was a once in a lifetime experience, absolutety amazing.
@@jc88hate damn, that’s awesome. I’ve seen Metallica live 8 times but would have loved being at one of the S&M shows
@@jc88hate 1999 show the best with load-reload era technology and sound i think. Old school pickups and guitar sound. James now using different pickups and technology, 90's sound is the best for me.
Unforigven 3 is a better one to start with first. Just James and the orchestra, no guitars, no drums (besides orchestra). Just beautifully amazing.
@@Ranganation it’s a great version but it doesn’t quite have the impact of the album version. I think listening to the three unfogivens as they were released is a great way to understand how the the story and theme unfolds
This metallica concert was the best ever & most epic concert ever..
Oh how I wish I would have been there!
"Bleeding me" with Orchestra is one Class better. Believe me ;-)
Truuueee.
Agree no leaf, bleeding me , hero of the day all amazing!!!
The outlalaw torn too , but Bleeding me is more emotional
One as weeell!!!
Yes!!!
My favorite song and never had a studio version released
The san fransico symphony orchestra, with Michael Kamen at the helm (rip)
Battery from this set is absolutely insane!!
Yes, and very impressive how well MK managed to rewrite the intro. You need to listen very carefully to hear how well it's disguised 😀
Hetfields best ever vocal performance and 2 hours of pure perfection
Why they do everything so masterful is why they have 'carte blanche' to do whatever they want. They earned it
"Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel is just a freight train coming your way" that always tripped me out for some reason like dude is saying, now you've got what you wanted. Was it worth it?
To me this will always be signature song to represent Metallica S$M. Of their entire library, there was no better song written to go along with symphonic orchestration. It is almost anthem-worthy. I love this one also for the fact that it emotionally takes me somewhere with the collaborative sound. When the song ends, i trully feel like i have been somewhere
So whimsical and just goes off the rails, the song is like a fairy tale, so many up and downs. I still remember the day watching the DVD when it first came out with friends. The entire concert is fantastic. Straight up blew my mind, and on point with saying it is different than most symphonic metal, I see you. 😁
METALLICA… through the years has been my favorite band. Case in point: no other band that created THRASH METAL then said now w/ a full SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA LIVE!!!!😎😎
This show has my favorite live vocals from James ever. Perfect mix of the earlier 80s aggression with the vocal technique from late 90s and beyond.
This whole album is absolute fire! It's the greatest mix of sounds!
"Hero of The Day" and "Minus Human" from that same concert... out of this world!!!
then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel
Was just a freight train coming your way
Yes, we know the lyrics…
Wauw what a great performance. I'am just a view years into Metallica . but this is the reason why now I'am. Rock on 🤘🎸🎵 greets jacco valkenburg
Hero of the Day is insanely good from this concert
James voice was godlike 🤘🤘
It's the back beat and the palm muted guitars at 7:42 that gets me, so fucking monstrous! Lars really thrives with these slower songs!!!
Endless joy watching Suzi rock out. Just felling every beat.
Travis was on point with the symphonic comment, for me the difference is that symphonic metal is written with that mindset already and in this case this is a pure metal song with the symphony doing it’s arrangements around it. It just works on so many levels. And the way they were able to mesh both without each overpowering the other is genius work in the arrangements. Metallica are gods.
FUN FACT-
BABYMETAL dreamed of some day opening up for the legendary metal group Metallica that dream came true at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. As one might expect from the trio, they absolutely rocked the stage! Kicking off Metallica's Seoul show on January 11, 2017, BABYMETAL opened the night with an explosive 6-song set.
If you ask the girls who is there musical influence, they will say with a big smile METALLICA. Metallica showed them how amazing metal music can be, and the girls respect them a lot. If you google METALLICA & BABYMETAL you will see some cool pics of them together and the time BABYMETAL opened up for METALLICA.
Metallica, Minus Human!!!
That was at the Berkeley Community Theater. The greatest concert I’ve ever been to. No Leaf Clover was EPIC!
Used to sleep with my TV on MTV as a teen (90s) and woke up to this concert playing one night and was obsessed!
This is some other prime of Metallicas career. 98 garage inc and Woodstock 99 gig. And this with symphony. Another prime, maaan!!!
You guys are exactly right... The reason it works so well is due to Heavy Metal, as a genre, being much closer to classical music in form than almost any other popular music genre today. The structure and composition of (good) Heavy Metal songs, and when it come to ALL of the best metallica, have SO much in common with classical compositions, and so many Heavy Metal musicians are formally/classically trained musicians as well. Cliff Burton was really the proper "musician" of the group when they were first starting out... and he taught James and Lars a LOT about song composition. The difference between just their first two albums was only a single year, but they sound WORLDS apart. Their first album is this raw, punky, fast, thrash-fest of aggressive riffs and manic energy. Their second album is a symphonic, often slow-paced, intricate and haunting composition. You can feel Burton's influence in that incredibly short time... and they never would have succeeded were it not for him.
Pairing those very classically-influence/adjacent songs with a symphony, honestly, is a no-brainer once you have a real appreciation for how a lot of Metallica's songs are structured.
Yes, no leaf clover, from the first S&M.. you're doing it right gentlemen.
This song and Minus Human (or just "Human") were written for this show with the orchestra in mind. The rest were written without orchestra and then later added by Michael Kamen. Nothing Else Matters did have Michael Kamen do orchestra for the original studio version on the black album but it's mostly in the background and ambient.. rather than the S&M version where the orchestra is very high in the mix.
James Hetfield is a fucking beast mate
It’s all about the arrangements, Michael Kamen made it happen. He arranged the strings in Nothing Else Matters for them. He also arranged the orchestration another song you reacted to already, Silent Lucidity by Queensryche.
Fun fact, the composer for this orchestra from this recording is Michael Kamen who had done work with Metallica on the Black Album with the song “Nothing Else Matters”.
Travis and Suzi; please react to the whole concert; the amazing “made in heaven” collaboration between “Tallica” and the orchestra is out of this world and the concert with the many bangers including the world class sound will blow you away for eternity while you digest some of most outstanding music you have ever heard….only downside doing it; you will get musically spoiled like never before and you’ll get even more addicted to “Tallica”….🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘…..20 years later they did another concert with the same orchestra in 2019
I have this DVD I saw this DVD the first time in the 90s early 90s and I'm giant Metallica fan seen him four times and once I heard the s&m DVD version I went out and bought the album version the CD version and it brings all this songs up to just another amazing level and I'm surprised more people don't do the reactions off the s&m it's amazing the whole thing call of katulla oh my word that is amazing on this album
Metallica wrote this song solely for this collaboration with the symphony in mind.
You know how Four Leaf Clovers are good luck? Well this is about a No Leaf Clover, Bad luck! ...hence the chorus, "when it comes to be the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, it's just a freight train coming your way".
That awesome venue is my high school alma mater; The 3490 seat Berkeley Community Theatre on the campus of Berkeley High School just two blocks from THE University of California. It was completed in 1950 after being postponed because of the war (WWII) it is known for its art-deco design and bas-relief greek sculptures around the white walls of the building.
Countless iconic concerts were held there since the sixties including Jimi Hendrix in 1969 which was made into a documentary film.
Fun fact, lead guitar player Kirk Hammett is the same age as me and he attended one of our local rival schools
I was wondering if I would ever find anyone brave enough to react to anything from the S&M album. Which is truthfully probably my second favorite Metallica album ever. And this is by far my favorite track on the album!
This is what blows everyone's minds. Symphonic metal is written purposely. Metallica didnt write music thinking one day a symphony would play their music, much less play with one (aside from Nothing Else Matters) so the fact that the mesh of both styles fit so perfectly and why the collaboration worked so well is a testament to the foundation on which Metallica's music is created. Also, Michael Kamen deserves a lot of credit. He is the one that could hear what no one would've imagined. Im not sure where I read the quote but he said Metallica's music is like a movie, he's just writing the soundtrack to it. Listen to Call of Ktulu from this show, the first track of this show, you knew you were in for an epic night.
S&M is one the the greatest things on earth.
Pastor of Muppets is my new favorite name now
That song is a masterpiece the name is great and the way the song goes about someone that thinks that finally things going good for him and then it’s all calm and nice and a train hit him…:) no leads on his clover…
DOOOOOOOOD!!!!!!........................... Music Time Broooooo, You phukin wiv the flow!
This is my all time favorite Metallica song 🎶
James voice was completely re-recorded in studio and Lars some drum part too, like call of ktulu. Call of ktulu won best instrumental prize.
I attended this live but you're right.
Not that it swayed to how he sounded live in this concert.
@@mitchand9 you can find "auidence" recorded, much different from this. Drums are very loud and James howling, sometimes hes voice drops. Lars playing different than dvd(sometimes). I like much more than dvd channel.
You need to check The Call of Khtulu, All Within My Arms, Outlaw Thorn and Until It Sleeps with this orchestra as well.
All within my hands*
@@drunkenjames5814 yeah sorry. Not good with remembering names of songs.
@@drunkenjames5814 just realised it also The Outlaw Torn.
Эта песня и Орион - мои самые любимые у Металлики. Эта песня - когда понимаешь, что большинство древних симфонических композиторов сейчас бы сочиняли и писали металл.
PAY NO MIND TO THE DISTANT THUNDER
It's only fitting that Classical music elements and metal go together like wine and cheese. You have to think that back they didn't have electricity so obviously we didn't have modern abilities to feed high gain volume and tone to guitars and Bass. Composers like Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich etc., were the original metal composers of their era. Their music was hugely complex and pieces were written to fill great castle halls, manor estates and opera houses with pure musical sound.
Well. I am officially your new biggest fan! Amazing reaction. Ha. Love that you get it.
''The Unforgiven 3'' IS one of the best metallica songs in my list, react to it some day you both will love it
This is favourite piece for my mother. Mine is 'Memory Remains (S&M ofcourse).
Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of you’re tunnel, is just a freight train coming you’re way. My favorite line in any song ever!
The S&M live album and dvd with the San Francisco Symphony are amazing. This song was never released outside of that live performance. That song and Minus Human were awesome but the band sadly didn't go down that route. Instead we got the awful St. Anger...
@@leoralev2416 Worst Metallica album is still good. I don't dislike St Anger. There are some good songs. The lack of guitar solos and melodies and the horrible sound makes it the worst.
St Anger is a crap album
@@mitchand9 that’s the album they made without a bassist. Jason left and James was going through rehab. Watch the documentary “some kind of monster” about that time
@@jacobinmugatu3333 I'm not saying I don't like the album. Only that it's crap compared to their other albums.
Then again, I'd like to think that it was meant to sound like crap. Like they were going through a lot of shit and wanted you to hear and feel it while listening to the songs. My take on it anyway.
This is the best all around song ever composed. Don’t @me.
This song was written specifically for this show. Can’t imagine how it would sound without the orchestra and I’m glad we’ll probably never hear it without.
Great pick !! Hey, girl, LOVE the eye makeup, it's looks softer on u and it's flawless !!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Michael Kamen told Metallica to give him a tape a live performance, not a sterile studio performance. No Leaf Clover was a song that they didn't know what to do with like"Minus Human". It sounds decent stripped down too!
Yeah, sure. I think you meant to say Lars likes to challenge the fans to discover what time signature he's playing in.
My favorite song when I was 9 lol played it nonstop
Hey Y'all!!! Thanks for doing this reaction, it truly was/is EPIC, for sure. I would also recommend another Rock/Symphony collaboration (if you have not already seen it) and that is KISS Symphony: Alive IV Live album (2003) with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in Australia. Not only is the music and performance top notch, but the Conductor and every member of the Orchestra were decked out in KISS makeup! Love it!!!
@TheWolfHunterz they do have lots of Symphony twice ove + country music plus blues plus Movies plus movie quality vids with deep deep meanings lots of fast heavy war on and on
You definitely have to check out Metallica S&M2 - Call of Cthulu. It’s just EPIC and recent.
Might want to spell Ktulu correctly
A very cool symphonic hardrock song is Europe-Last look at Eden. Cool music video 🤟
I love this song! Great reaction as usual guys!!!
And keep in mind they are from San Francisco, so the SF symphony fits even better
I don't know how much orchestra collaboration there was, but they did play two new songs at this gig. This being one of them and minus human being the other one... They might have been done with the late great Michael Kamen to get the best of both worlds into one. The other compositions are bloody marvellous as well, but there the orchestral elements have been added in "post production" to already existing songs. They did do S&M2 in 2019 just before James went into rehab... And it does have some very special songs on it as well. These are almost tributes to Cliff Burton, he was a classically trained musician and influenced the early sound of Metallica heavily. These types of concerts would have been just heaven for Cliff.
love your reactions guys keep it up! so fun
First time I heard this was in late Dec '99 (12/22?), in my truck ~7:30pm, about 30 sec down the road from a long day at work (12+ hrs) . DJ didn't say what it was, so I didn't know. Had 4 reactions :
1) Huh? Am I on the right station?
2) When James started singing, THAT's Metallica? :O
3)Yep. Wow! +crank it+ ! (& I was suddenly less tired . :) )
4) Hmmmmm.....this could be the GW Bush campaign theme song. :PPPP [I was semi-familiar w/ his record in TX]
you should listen hero of the day from this concert that was beautiful :)
This concert was with San Francisco symphony in 1999 (S&m) and was awesome... But in 2019 they did a 20 year anniversary show (S&M2) and it was also awesome...
I recommend you react to 'All within my hands' or ' Moth into Flame' from S&M2
Though I really enjoy the S&M album I always thought that most of the songs sound just like what they are: a Metallica song that got some orchestral arrangements added on top. This song, on the other hand, is exactly what the album's concept promises: Metallica with an Orchestra. Everything blends seamlessly and the song would be all the lesser if you removed anything from it, regardless if the part that was removed was from the band or the orchestra's part. It's a beautiful piece of music and it was also a beautiful performance from everybody involved. These guys came out of the gate swinging, performing a brand new song nobody had heard and it was an instant classic. That's why they are legends.
The solo in this song was created on the fly in the show. Kirk had no solo in kind until it happened
Best reaction to S&M 👍🤝❤
That look she gives him at 8:24 when he pauses the music.
I think its San Francisco?? It's the San Francisco Philharmonic! Hence S&M this beats the pants of the 2nd one in my mind! This is a prime example of the epicness of the whole show really! Need to do more! I recommend For Whom the Bell Tolls next! ;-)
GuyZ a lot of VideoZ ! The history of metal ! Yes guys several times metallica with an Orchestra ! The introduction is very rad like Sir Tra Says ! Yes amico , Lars is a massive mind in band's directions ! His snare drum sound in the Song St Anger of the same album or Frantic i remember so well and sincerely i think it was pretty unique . Very raw and interesting at the same time . His sound defines partially Metallica band . Metallica headliner fourth day of Firenze Rocks 2022 Cascine Park guys ! Few days ago the news of their presence came out !
It was one of my favourite songs from my early twenties until today- when I saw this chick react to the song...
Not true, perhaps before cliff but he taught them how to harmonize and the albums/tracks he composed was composed in a structure comparable to classical. What sad is Cliff was not around for this production, just imagine! RIP
You two are so entertaining together
Todo ese disco es una hermosura
Bleeding me , absolutely
My god i love this song
9:36 is my favorite part, "And I'm Constipated!!! Yeah I'm Constipated!!!" LMAO! still love this song, but when I was a in High School I could swear on my mother that's what he was saying. Just like the song Liberate by Slipknot. the beginning sounds like he is yelling "Fried!!!! Bananas!!!"
He actually sings "Then it comes to be, YEAH!!"
@@MUSiC-world-20986 LOL Yeah... I know
This whole show is incredible. But the stand out one for me is The Thing That Should Not Be. I know you’ve reacted to it before, but the S&M version is a totally different entity! Much love to you guys, and keep up the great work, musically and , of course, reactionary 🤘🙂🤘
Amen!
love u guys when u listening masters. keep it up please.
Yes pls "Bleeding me" with orchestra and next "To live is to die"
You have got to do the song " ONE " from this same concert. It's epic.
You guys definitely check out My Friend Of Misery live in Melbourne 2013.
More reactions of Metallica please 🙌🏼👋🏼🇲🇽🤘🏻
I wore this CD out in the 90s
Sadly, few years later this show, another band, Scorpions, copied this idea and did a live show whith an orchestra.. sadly, they said to the press that it was their original idea.. they could said: well, we watched metallica doing it, we loved it and we wanted to do the same.
Singles in album, new song
