This was a live album (S&M) that Metallica recorded with the San Francisco Symphony back in 1999 and this was one of 2 songs written exclusively with the symphony.
They made another live album 20 years later in 2019 with the symphony: S&M2

Metallica had the idea playing with an orchestra back in 1991 when the "Black" album was released and already collaborated with Michael Kamen (the conductor of the orchestra).
Sadly Kamen passed away in 2003. Would have loved to see him conducting S&M 2. He was a damn genius.

This was back in 1999 gentlemen
They brought the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and did an entire show with them in Berkeley California, was also a DVD too.
In 2019 they did it again S&M2
Same orchestra with a different conductor this time, but once again made into a DVD as well.
Truly phenomenal performances, you both should do a deep dive into these shows, they are MAGICAL 🤘🏻🔥🤘🏻🔥🤘🏻
The album is called S&M and S&M2. They were both released, but you want mind blowing listen to Master of Puppets from S&M from this same show… TRUST ME

When this came out It completely blew my mind and opened it up to the possibilities of music when it is not constrained by genre. Good music is good music. I have been a fan of symphonic metal ever since. This recording is about 23 years old and still holds up today. You have to be impressed by Michael Kamen who wrote and directed all the symphonic music for this concert/album too. You mentioned Master of Puppets and yes they absolutely did Master of Puppets with the orchestra. You absolutely should check out this entire concert.

So, Michael Kamen (R.I.P), who was the conductor for the San Francisco Symphony did the orchestra part of Nothing Else Matters on the black album, which you can hear better in "the elevator version" of the song. He pitched the idea of doing a full concert with the orchestra to Metallica, who decided to take him up on the offer nearly a decade later. Thus S&M (symphony & Metallica) came into being

This is one of my absolute favorites. From S&M (Symphony and Metallica) 1. This song was written specifically for the concert. It, obviously, did not disappoint. I always wanted to hear a lot of their music played by a symphony, but them playing with the entire orchestra was incredible. Watch the entire concert, if you can.

This would have been an absolutely amazing show to see. For the vocal effects live, there is a tech off stage managing the effects. You can see James has practiced when to stop to let the delays and reverb ride out. Brilliant show! This show alone shows the Metallica hater's claims that they suck are baseless.

    • @ryanpatterson906
      @ryanpatterson906 11 месяцев назад

The vocals for Clover were re-recorded in the studio. The melodyne (form of pitch correction) can be heard throughout the album, this can't be achieved live. Before you ask, no it is completely different to autotune, they've never used it. Personally, I think it sounds great as it isn't used heavily, plus James's vocals from about 96-2001 are my favourite. 9:15 Personally I think they're his best. I'm sure the same EQ effect was used live however as you said.

Great reaction!! It was my girlfriend (now wife) that picked this CD up (released November 1999 - so it's now 24 years old!) - we listened and we loved! The maestro that makes this project work is none other than Michael Kamen (RIP) - composer extraordinaire (whom we can thank for SO many great soundtracks), conducting the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.
Believe it or not, they do some 'older' thrash tracks, and they work wonderfully!! Master Of Puppets, Battery, One, The Call Of The Ktulu, For Whom The Bell Tolls. Nothing from Kill 'Em All though.
The offerings were heavy on the Metallica (Black), Load and Reload albums.
HIGHLY recommend any of the ones listed above, Bleeding Me, Hero Of The Day, and Fuel.
And you were very close - S&M stands for Symphony & Metallica!

The s&m albums/ shows are amazing. While this song was made just for this concert the rest is their songs played with an orchestra playing with them. I suggest master of puppets and for whom the bell tolls from this concert.

They've put out 2 live S&M performances between 1999 and 2020. This is from the first one. I especially like their symphonic version of the instrumental The Call of Ktulu (from the Ride The Lightning album).
By the way, Kill Em All is their 1st album (originally called Metal Up Your Ass). I believe the first song they ever wrote was Hit The Lights.

EDIT: also came out as a DVD/blu-ray

This whole concert was amazing, but if you only react to one other song off of this, "The Outlaw Torn" is epic.

If you guys loved this you should react to them doing Master of Puppets with the orchestra it's mind blowing

This song is so epic sounding, especially when they come out of the bridge into that thunderous overture reprise. The song seems to be about the dangers of relying on luck for too long, because it can change in an instant.

It's not technically live. Vocals and guitar solo were overdubbed as it was lined up as the single for the live album. Vocals melody was slightly different at the time this was filmed but still fit with the cadence of James vocals. Drums, bass, rhythm guitar and orchestra live tracks were still used

That song was written especially for that concert, it was the first one they played it and it was not released on any album, definitely one of my favorites. If you want some new Metallica, ״too far gone” or “room of mirror”
