As a professional traditional artist, this helped me SO FREAKING Much. You've effective given me an encyclopedia of how to draw all kinds of scales. Thank you.
Just wait until Friday's video! We get even closer!
Chili Potato as someone who is an almost professional, mostly traditional artist, I can agree. I enjoy dragons a ton and it’s always a matter of “what should the scales look like”.
I design tattoos and this helps so much for creating snake designs 🖤🖤🖤
Good to know this video helped someone in the same way it helped me -I do digital art tho-
Emily loved it. Your so lucky
On a scale of one to ten....
Pun intended
Loved this 😂

Another scale mystery from my favorite snake, the Kenyan Sand Boa: KSBs have keeled scales, but on most of their bodies their keels aren't very pronounced and you can barely tell, until you get down to their tails where their scales are very rough and bumpy. And we're still not sure why! Some theories are that it aids with burrowing, defending from predators, or makes their tails looks more like their heads (their heads aren't pronounced at all, so it's already kinda hard to tell).
OMG, one of my favorite snakes is the Kenyan Sand Boa!
Ivy’s Arts and Exotics my Kenyan sand boa just arrived today!! 🥺🥺💛💛
So cute! I wish you luck! Btw I have a created gecko he’s my first reptile and for my birthday I’m planning on getting a snake!
Ivy’s Arts and Exotics I used to own a crestie!! I have a leopard gecko, bearded dragon, ball python, and now a Kenyan sand boa! I’ll share my snakes with you until you can get one 💛💛 I have an insta for them haha
I noticed that on my KSB!

Literally same lol. I was like, "Does my topic have to match my degree?"
I'm not even in school anymore and I'm like, "Oh no. Don't give me that idea because I will be sitting here with like a 50-page report and like 2,000 index cards."
Emily: "Today we're going to be focusing on-"
Camera's Autofocus: "You can't tell me what to do!"
I love how the snake Emily is holding has like 3 different sections, each looking different in color and pattern
You’re the reason I’m considered the weird “pet person” at my school. All I do is talk about reptiles and fish. Between you and Clint’s reptiles everyone’s going to think I’m an expert
This happened to me too

Such an interesting topic! I never knew scales could be so diverse
I just thought scales were scales
Indeed the scale is a scale worth paying attention to you may feel past this comment with all the scales but the smoother the scale for this job the better so I'm going to scale out of here before I drown you in tons 😏
i never realized how hd your video quality was until the last clip with cheyenne. it looked like i was watching a spoiled macaw eating bagel in real life!
Ed: "I'll just stand in my underwear" LOL
I've never owned any reptiles nor do I plan on having any but my god I love your channel. I became a sub when you had that boost of subs that went from about 700k to over 1mil. Keep up the great content 😁
I’m glad you have Hannah . I’m devastated and heartbroken for you that Janet passed.
4:31 0; RAINBOW SCALE!
( the light made the scale have a rainbow ish colour to it )
I had to run it back to see for sure. So interesting to see that!
Can we please please please see more of the Timor monitor? It's just so pretty and adorable and perfect

Ed has inspired the next generation to become cameramen by revealing the trade secret of their craft:
not wearing pants.
I really love how your episodes are educational even when they don’t give definitive answers
I figured I’d share this with everyone here since I feel like this is a good place to put it, but I had a dream last night that I was in a field outside a building, and I got cornered (there was a fence around me) by this massive cobra. Judging by how far it was off the ground, it must have been around twenty-five feet long. Thankfully, that dream didn’t scare me off snakes in general.
Sorry if this seems off-topic, but I needed to put it somewhere.
Haha I dreamt that I was sat on top of the Big One at Blackpool last night.. weird thing is, I've never been on it!!
Now I'm curious, did the Cobra build the fence as a trap, or was it already there and it cornered you on purpose?
In one of my dreams Emily gave us a awesome reptile presentation and we got four amphibians, and got to hold Chyeanne. But I live like a 20 hr drive away from her and haven’t seen a reptile program ever
this helped me get some insight on drawing more detailed dragons! thanks!
I didn't realize how different snake scales were until recently. I've had a ball python for almost a year, and I recently got a baby Boa (BCI). They're about the same size, but her scales are so much smaller and slightly rougher, giving them a completely different feel when you pet her. It's so crazy how different they are despite the snakes being so similar
Does anyone else sit there booping snake noses as they come on the screen? I kinda feel silly for doing it, but I was wondering if anyone else ever does it.
Thanks Emily for talking about snake scales! I just went to the reptile zoo a few weeks ago and was noticing all the differences in the scales, not just in texture, but in length and size, with some being held more closely to the body, some being longer, and some being bigger and chunkier. I noticed especially on the mambas and racers, they had really long, smooth, scales, which was really surprising to me! While the cobra had bigger, wider, (proportionally) scales, and some of the pit vipers had almost spikey scales! (Pygmy rattlesnakes are SOOOO cute! Adorable danger noodles! Or would that be hazard macaroni?) It was really cool to have you post on it so soon after wondering about it!
For a moment I actually thought you were holding a bit slimmer version of Janet. It is crazy how much like her dad she looks, one should think they all look the same aside from morphs
I used to be deathly afraid of snakes until I came to this channel which led me to see how awesome and interesting snakes are and now snakes are one of my favorite species of animals! Thank you for teaching me so much about snakes. :>
Okay but please explain h o w. I'm genuinely curious how someone can be afraid of a living noodle who has the means to protect themselves
I don’t know..... it’s kinda just an irrational fear that I got from false beliefs 😅
@@tsoomn What false beliefs?
I was literally just about to leave a question on another video asking why one of the snakes was just so shiny. Apparently, it was because that snakes had smooth scales. I had no idea. I always thought the scales were relatively the same except for the coloring. Thank you for this because now I at least know why that is now. Hana is so pretty! Her coloring is gorgeous.
This is such a coincidence! I was at a science museum today, and a staff member taught us about the rosy boa (its natural habitat, its prey, etc.) We talked about shedding too! Fun fact: the boa we met and learned about was 22 years old!
Wow, that was very interesting and informative! I never really thought about why there are so many different Scale structures, i always assumed it would bei because of functionality.
Thanks, Emily. ^^
I simply LOVE your channel and everything you guys put out
Thank you guys for your videos. My husband has always wanted a snake and your videos are slowly turning me around to the idea. Now all I need you guys to do is some tarantula videos so I can start breeding them again.
I always love the bloopers at the end of each video.
I am always looking forward to seeing new uploads! Your videos are so amazing and interesting! I love both your channel and snakes
0:50 I'm just going to point out, Birds having scales are not a case of convergent evolution. They are related to reptiles and evolved from dinosaurs. That's why birds have scales, its a remnant from when they were small feathered non avian dinosaurs lol.
Everything else you said at that part I agree with though.
Love it soo much
Never liked snakes till I found youre channel!
I love your guys channel Emily and Ed! Love learning more about reptiles! Now im not so much scared of snakes anymore thank you guys so much for doing the videos! Learning a lot about reptiles, especially Rex, and of course Cheyenne!
I ordered that Bullsnake shirt a few weeks ago! I love it!!
Going to wear it to Tinley in March. Hope to see you and Ed there. 😊
I never knew scales could be so amazing! This really taught me a lot! Thanks for sharing!
I love all your vids but my faves are the educational (especially genetics). You are an amazing teacher.
I never knew I was interested in reptiles until I found this channel. Thanks for teaching us something new, Emily!
I really love the channel, keep up the great work.
Are you guys planning on a reptile room tour? I love your previous ones and I’m pretty excited to see if you do another one and see all your animals!
I have been caught out many times on the whole 'not wearing pants at home' thing. It's gotten to the point where I keep a spare wrap around skirt near the front door. 😂
That's a great idea!! I'm gonna put some of my shorts near the door now 😂 thanks! Xx
Those may be the best outtakes ever.
Watching your video help understand about reptiles and I love your video so much
I love the closeup of the face. And how interesting your topic was. I had no idea about that snakes don’t all have the same kind of scales
Very informative, thank you again!
Love the channel, as well as my kids. Thank you for what you do. Knowledgeable and entertaining. Keep up the good work. We'll be watching. Also, I think you should figure out why some snakes have different scales... It bothers me that there's no definite answer. 😜
I love your reptiles and vids!
SO COOL! I love your channel
As always a good and educational video 😊 just one question what happened to the viper boas you bought at Tinley last year?
Woah the footage was amazing! It's such an interesting topic.
I love your videos I wish I could see your new building when it opens also thanks to you a looooove reptiles and so many of them GO REPTILES🐍🐍🐍🐍
I was going to say this video was too short, but the outtakes at the end made it worth it.
Aww, Cheyenne is just the cutest in the world! I’m so glad you included her in this video!
I know it’s a video about snakes, but Cheyenne will always be my favourite! 😁💕
i love your channel cause i'm OBSESSED with snakes
I just learned something new!! Great video 💙🐝💙
Love watching such a great wonderful teachers. You are just amazing
I love your outtakes.
That snake you're holding most of the video is the most interesting snake coloration ever. I thought it was more than one snake at first.
So informative, so cool! 🐍
Hahaha “not a tortoise”
love learning from you
And BTW love your channel very interesting ☺
PLEASE MAKE MORE VIDEOS LIKE THIS! PLEASE! BTW, have a great day
Love you guys. Great videos and so much info. Still love babies hatching videos the best
Awesome! Thanks! 🙏 I now know my leopard gecko has granular scales and that’s why she’s so pleasantly bumpy! I love this channel! Am I right in thinking that’s Olive Oil and Lumpy guest starring along with Hannah? Oh, and Cheyenne getting that bagel 🥯 at the end! 😂😂😂😂 Keep up the good work, y’all!
I love that Ed doesn't like to wear pants, because my husband hates wearing pants too. 🤷♀️
Your the reasen that i love snakes and is why i love them so thank you so much emily
I would love to see just a vlog of you hanging out with your pets! They are so cute! Or even a new all my pets!!!! :D
I always thought that it was just boas that have smooth scales.
Great video, love to learn.
This is a very well built video!
Butterflies and moths are arthropods, but then so are all other insects, as well as all crustaceans and all arachnids. The clade containing only butterflies and moths is the Lepidopterans, which, translated literally from science-Greek means "scale-winged ones".
The painting in the background of an Umbreon next to a white Pumpkin is really cool

My name is Olivia and I’m 8. I watch your videos everyday!
you guys are so much fun :D
With some species, keeled scales could be a feature where it was useful to one of the species they evolved from but don't have a huge effect in the current species, but still has just enough of a role that they still retain it, like our appendix.
Yay! Happy to see Chyenne being silly at the end :)
I love the little "eyebrow" marking that bullsnakes have they look like they are perpetually frowning at you wondering why you are here without food xD
Do I own a snake? No
Will I ever own a snake? Probably not
Do I still enjoy watching your content anyway? Heck yes!
Awesome education video♥️
im 10 but still absolutely LOVE your channel and because of you i really want a snake! If i get one I'll name it Discovery in honor of you! ❤❤❤❤
This was interesting to learn. Right now my class in Biology are trying to figure out what genes cause the different color morphs in ball pythons.
It'll be cool to try to figure out what causes these different kind of scales too.
I love your video's and the anamals are kinda cool to
Hi guys,
I love your channel and learned so much.
I really would love a video about the scaleless rat/cornsnakes to learn more about them.
I think i watched the hatching video for like 4 times now XD
I am preparing to get some scaleless baby snakes for a breeder in my area (in the netherlands) and when we started talking i fell in love with her scaleless okeetee.
She is about to lay her eggs and i am so exited😍😍😍
Could you guys please please please post a video of how your little scaleless are doing ?
Thank you very much for all the information and lovely content 😁😁😁
I love the parrot at the end, I didn't know they had a parrot~!
Convergent evolution has been going crazy with crabs lately
Kinda glad I know what scute or scutum means since that does make sense, go Latin! I also agree with several artists that have posted... Figuring out what scales are which and what they may be used for or how they can be useful for the reptile can help decide what kind of dragon you're drawing! Pretty neat. :)
Interesting as always 😊
Can we have an update on the Dekays's brown snakes ? They must be bigger by now. They are so cute 😁
Love ya vids
FUN FACT: rats also have scales on their tails.
Hannah is just stunningly beautiful as well as a sweetie! I really enjoyed this vid. I was really surprised and fascinated by this video; I thought we had more data on scale shapes and their purposes were based around getting around their habitat or making noise (like saw scaled vipers and rattlesnakes). As always, thank you for doing these vids, being best friends to our beloved world of noodles, and showing kids that reptiles are wonderful.
First, I want to say I am big fan of your videos. I learn a lot about snakes. I have always had a huge phobia of snakes. I want to conquer that fear by owning a snake. I don't have one yet. I want to learn first before I decide which snake I should buy.
There is the tiny little adorable rainbow on the garter snake at 7:25!!!
I'm so lucky I've found this channel lol.
Can you a video on all about corn snakes? I’m planning on getting one in the future so that would help a lot :)
That was awesome no pants...lol reminds me of my family..lol
Great video. Snake Discovery I love watching your videos while I'm chilling with my bearded dragon. I would love to have a snake but due to my family being afraid of snake's I don't think it would be a good idea
