Oh man, I came across a hognose by accident once when I was doing my research in the prairie. He immediately played dead, and squealed very dramatically as he "died"
During college, I'd visit a snake that was a residential pet at a nearby pet-store. I did so because the owner would tell me "that snake likes you so much, she always recognizes you, please visit". I never quite understood why, until she gained more confidence to perk up and want to come up to me - but at the beginning I didn't get why they thought she liked me - at all. Turns out, you've pretty much explained it to me now, her body language was the equivalent of a puppy's. I remember even, rarely ever seeing her flick her tongue, and now I know why. Here's the funniest, that snake was 4 years old, and the owner said, in the future, they wanted to give her to someone whom loved her, closer to her retirement, since it seemed unfair to spend all her life "alone", per say. Without being handled more often, and loved as much as she could. You guessed it, they wanted me to keep her one day, but I promptly told them I lived far-away, and had no money whatsoever to keep the lady.... although, I still think about her. Maybe we will meet again, and maybe I will get to keep her...but I'm jobless and downright homeless because of personal-issues, so...I don't think I'll ever see her again... Lady, her actual name, was a Boa Constrictor. And yes, she was, is, beautiful.
THE NAFERATU Awww That reminds me of my best friend who moved away, One day she came back to visit and by sheer chance, we walked past each other in the same pre-k and we immediately hugged, I miss her so much
*when your ‘danger’ noodle is just silent and curious* “A D O R A B L E-“ Fun fact: my ramen noodle absolutely hates my mom lol. She tenses whenever my mom tries to hold her so my mom usually just leaves her alone lol
I have to explain to my friends EVERY time I take out my ball python, "if the head jerks back and the snake is tense and keeps a close eye on you, THEN it'll strike. It's not gonna strike if it's just resting and its neck resembles an S". Thanks for making this, I can show it to them so I won't have to explain every time XD
Same here, but now after watching the video I'm doing research to see if I actually want to buy a snake, I've been looking for a docile pet and a snake seems like a good idea
My bull snake "rattles" his tail every time he eats. I'm not sure if he is trying to make me run away while he eats or if it's directed at his mice. I leave him alone but it's really cute. Such a good noodle.
You might not read this, but about a year ago I had a little mishap with my 9ft boa (she struck and missed the rat, completely not her fault) But Bc of that I lost my nerve when it came to feeding my snakes.. I was terrified to do it and would just lay the rats and mice down and hardly handle my snakes and seriously considered getting rid of my collection. Your channel reminded me why I love my snakes, you’ve relit my spark and gain me the confidence I needed! Now I handle all my sweet snakes regularly and feed them properly.. thank you Emily.. thank you for this channel 💕💕💕

Just got my baby corn snake. I thought he was stressed and I got upset but this video has reassured me that he’s just relaxing. Thank god, I love my baby
my ball python loves being held, when he’s ready to receive some loving he will hold his head up and wait for me to pick him up so he can chill in my bra or my hands. idc what anybody says, my snake loves me
I'm imagining a snake just staring at you like my dog does when you have food but they're reaching for you and they have little arms reaching for a hug
The lesson of "look at the whole picture, not one signal" reminds me of people thinking my dog is aggressive because her ruff is fluffed, even though she's smiling, wagging her tail, and moving like a playful excited doggo. Dogs get their fur standing up when they're very excited, regardless of whether they're happy or unhappy. But people have heard that an aggressive dog's fur stands on end so they get wary even though everything else about her body language is friendly and joyful.
@@trananbinhjerry6438 kay was talking about how people warn Emily that her snake is about to strike. With a snake as big a boa constrictor it would be incredibly easy to feel the snakes muscles tensing up so she’d know he was upset without even seeing him
Devil's advocate: It's a dangerous side effect of the American education system. Most teachers are passionate and capable and well-read, but the lack of qualified people willing to take the pittance public schools pay means there are WAY too many underqualified teachers out there. And of course, they get super defensive about it (sing along if you know the words: "exCUSE me, *I* am the teacher in this room and YOU'RE the student, you kids think you know everything, stop disrespecting me!"), so they never learn. Eventually, you get students jaded to the point they stop trusting *actual* experts to really know what they're talking about. When that attitude follows them past graduation, the results can be annoying at best and disastrous at worst.
Everyone is this comment section: I like snakes. Me: Is that a oddish flower pot with the right plant to make it look like an oddish in the background.
I knew hoggies would have their own section. 🤣🤣 My own hoggy is such a puffy drama noodle, but I love him so much. He's never played dead, but he has made his mouth bleed once when the vet was inspecting him. Poor baby.
Wow! I learned quite a bit! I am usually afraid of snakes, but it helps to see you loving those guys up. I've never seen a snake as relaxed as Doug is, that was very new to me. (Looked like you two were cuddling!) Thanks very much for the video!
I admire the psychological tricks that you use during your videos. Being a show-and-tell herpetologist requires so much more than just knowledge about the reptiles that you work with. You exhibit a calm nature and a bright peppy attitude, you seem petite which is great for showing children that the snakes that you are handling aren't something they have to be afraid of, you wear clothing that a younger audience can identify with, and not to mention your body language. Fantastic presentation, showing just how beautiful and amazing snakes can be.
Clint's Reptiles Lol, don’t worry I’m sure everyone will watch both! Just got my first bp 2 weeks ago (I have a corn), through an emergency adoption! Do you have a video on their body condition in particular? I feel like he’s quite slim...wasn’t expecting that with a bp. I obviously don’t want him fat by any means but I can feel ribs when I do a wee physical exam of him. I’m a vet nurse but VERY little experience with reptiles! Oh and is it normal for them to trash their enclosures like a toddler having a tantrum? Lol, every morning I wake up and he’s tipped his water bowl (actually helps the humidity so meh lol) but he flips his hides, knocks down his branches and is covered in substrate! Normal behaviour otherwise, very content to be handled, eats like a champ, curious and calm!
It is very common for snakes to end up messing up their enclosures just it is more likely with bigger snakes. They don't do it on purpose but instead just do it as they explore at night. You likely didn't see it with your corn because corns don't get big enough to knock stuff over easily. If you want to minimize hides getting knocked over you can try a heavier hide, or add a rock on top of the hides you use now. For everything else, good luck finding a way to hold it in place XD
What’s even funnier is that egg eating snakes scare away predators by rubbing their scales together to sound scary 😂 hognoses scare with sneezes, egg eaters scare with what sounds like a constant maraca shake

@Rhiannon Bartscht yeah we're getting a Disney series, haven't you heard. Look it up. I'm so excited! 😁. They have already started the casting for Percy.
I know a decent amount about cats, figured it was time I learned more on reading another animal I really like :) Love the style too - clear and to the point, no extra 10 minutes of fancy flair in the middle of everything. Thank you so much!
I love that you mention the "rattling of the tail" My boyfriend and I just picked up a male corn (we had just a female corn before getting him a few days ago) and we had him in the temporary container and he did just that, rattling his tail against the plastic, it was a little hilarious because we've never seen a cornsnake do such a thing. We know he was just afraid/defensive so we didn't egg him on but thats something I've never encountered and it definitely caught both our attention because his tail hitting the plastic was pretty loud. Both are perfectly handlable as we got them both from the same store and they handle they're snakes constantly. As soon as we were able to pull him out of the container (We of course let him calm down beforehand) he was perfectly normal again with no problems but it was definitely fascinating to watch a corn mimic a rattlesnake in such a fashion, I definitely never knew they could do something like that with their tail.
I can't have a snake anymore because my husband and daughter are scared of them, but this video had my daughter saying that some of the snakes are cute and going, "Awww!" Progress!
I really just love the way you explain everything so fluently. The absence of “umm’s” and “uhh’s” make your videos so much more enjoyable. The videos might be longer but you are so straight to the point that it flows really well. Awesome job Emily!! 💕🐍

You might not read this, but about a year ago I had a little mishap with my 9ft boa (she struck and missed the rat, completely not her fault)
But Bc of that I lost my nerve when it came to feeding my snakes..

I'm imagining a snake just staring at you like my dog does when you have food but they're reaching for you and they have little arms reaching for a hug
Wtf !? Brah
"Most ball pythons dont like being touched in the face"
Bro i feel that on a personal level XD
Lol
I know that's true so guess I'm very lucky with mine she doesn't care and let's me pet her head and snoot bump all the time.

The urge to “educate” a person who is there to educate you... I can’t even imagine
What did she say is false??
@@trananbinhjerry6438 I think Kay was referring to the people who come up to her and tell her the snake is about the to strike.
@@misselizabethplays8070 Didn't even think of that... explains a lot of my classmates, at least.

This was such a good video! Super helpful for snake owners to know their snake's body language
Snake : make a hissing sound thinking it's loud
Hognose snake : Are you sure about that
Wow! I learned quite a bit!
I am usually afraid of snakes, but it helps to see you loving those guys up. I've never seen a snake as relaxed as Doug is, that was very new to me. (Looked like you two were cuddling!)
Thanks very much for the video!
I can't believe this is the topic of your video today! Tomorrow you will find out why I'm so surprised. This is crazy!
Awesome and freaking RAD!
I'll be waiting patiently for tomorrow!! :DD
I cant wait Clint!
Great minds think alike
It is very common for snakes to end up messing up their enclosures just it is more likely with bigger snakes. They don't do it on purpose but instead just do it as they explore at night. You likely didn't see it with your corn because corns don't get big enough to knock stuff over easily.
If you want to minimize hides getting knocked over you can try a heavier hide, or add a rock on top of the hides you use now. For everything else, good luck finding a way to hold it in place XD
So.... hognoses scare away predators with the power of sneezing?
Don’t forget nose boops
What’s even funnier is that egg eating snakes scare away predators by rubbing their scales together to sound scary 😂 hognoses scare with sneezes, egg eaters scare with what sounds like a constant maraca shake
they were prepared for 2020 scare tactics
They scare away the predators by sneezing, they make them think they have coronavirus
So basically, every other animal is antivax and they threaten them with a sneeze

My heart skipped a beat when that hog nose struck and you just took it! Than I heard you say bluff strike with its mouth closed lol. Crazy!
I love that you mention the "rattling of the tail"
My boyfriend and I just picked up a male corn (we had just a female corn before getting him a few days ago) and we had him in the temporary container and he did just that, rattling his tail against the plastic, it was a little hilarious because we've never seen a cornsnake do such a thing.
My female Corn does that too xD
That happened to my cornsnake (male) too!
I can't have a snake anymore because my husband and daughter are scared of them, but this video had my daughter saying that some of the snakes are cute and going, "Awww!" Progress!
I wish you luck in convincing your family of the cuteness of our precious noodly babies
