    Distinguishing between the 2 twins was the most incredible thing to me. You gotta think, they probably use the same soap and shampoo. Probably stay in the same room, live in the same house, and have probably been next to each other almost their entire lives. And she's didn't even hesitate.

    • @baerdred
      @baerdred 2 years ago +419

      One thing I didn't think about until recently - just because twins have the same DNA doesn't mean they have the same DNA expression. That's part of the reason why identical twins don't always look exactly alike. So I guess Zinka was able to pick up on this small difference.

    • @Imugi007

    As a retired command police officer my comment is that dogs are a great tool, but it's the K-9 team that makes the magic happen. A K9 team goes through a tremendous amount of training even before being deployed & that training continues daily from there on out. They become ONE UNIT, I have seen these units to some pretty amazing things in my 25 years. My hat off is to both K and handler, you are a very special breed when paired together.

      @biazacha Year ago +18

      My cousin (well my mom’s cousin) is a retired officer to my country’s equivalent on the K-9 unit and is incredible how they connect with the animal and can read subtle body language changes on the doggos. He now works helping “difficult” dogs to be trained, pretty much doing his magic with the ones that everybody else gave up.
      Still can’t make his cats listen to him tho 😂

      Some dogs are just smart like that. My family has a labrador retriever who plays quite rough with most people. However since my dad had a stroke, she's the sweetest most gentle girl around him.
      When he got back from the hospital she kept booping his paralyzed hand and leg. Now that he joined play sessions again, she always brings him the ball instead of stopping slightly out of reach and making him fight for it, which she used to do with everybody.

    I did SAR with K9s for 10 years. It takes a LOT of work to get a dog trained to this level, and few dogs are cut out for it, but it really is amazing to see them use their nose. For the advanced dogs, we would train by trailing 1 person through a Costco and by doing a 24 hr aged scent trail in the desert. If you’re lost, there’s dogs like this that will be looking for you.

    Shay is a HUGE reason why they won. This is one of the BIGGEST reasons search-and-rescue teams succeed.
    She keeps Zinka on track and knows EXACTLY what happens, pulling her back from distractions, which would otherwise distract Zinka.

      @alpheendomination A human wouldn't be able to smell the scents in the first place. So they wouldn't be able to work out what he did without the dog. It's a team effort and that's why it's so effective.

      I once saw a video of a fox that was able to lose the trackers. He came up to a dead-end on a bridge, then backtracked. The dogs never figured the fox had backtracked, and they kept yelping at a closed fence because they couldn't get across.

    • @patrickrannou1278
      @patrickrannou1278 2 years ago +15

      @stephen-dev Yes, backtracking but only ONCE YOU REACH SOME OBSTACLE is a better choice. Also, when you have backtracked and it's time to vveer off trail again, you JUMP out of the way to minimize your scent trail there.

    • @stephen-dev
      @stephen-dev 2 years ago +3

      @patrickrannou1278 My thinking is that a person might do something similar with a deep cave... maybe take their shirt off somewhere inside, backtrack and jump off the route. It would take them hours to search the cave, I doubt they would have flashlights with them.

    • @anniedaynoww
      @anniedaynoww 2 years ago +77

      Yes! I think it's clear from the video that anyone who can do parkour (take unexpected routes to traverse a space) would be able to fool the dog, and would have a much better chance fooling the handler as well.

    • @JG-yk6ny

    So, as a volunteer Search and Rescue dog handler, I love this so much and can confirm this is all accurate. I have been volunteering for the past 4 years with my dog, a Belgian Malinois which is similar to German Shepards but a bit more hyperactive and energetic. The training process with these dogs is intense and takes a ton of discipline and focus. Super cool that you did this video. I will sent separately what it looks like to start the training from the puppy ages, to teach, and socialize them with humans and families.

    • @rameynoodles152
      @rameynoodles152 2 years ago +40

      I think it might have to do with more. I think the dog might be going off of the whole scent, and not just the pure scent of his body. The scent of the clothes he was wearing that have their own scents on them from whatever they've been near combined with his natural body scent makes a pretty unique signature to follow, so you can't just throw the dog off by leaving some BO somewhere, you need the "whole" smell.

    Bit of extra trivia on facial recognition that I learned a while back: humans have a specific area in their brain solely dedicated to facial recognition, and if that specific area is compromised for whatever reason by disease or injury, then a human would be facial blind and loses the ability to recognize people. Even recognizing your close friends and family is a complete struggle.

    Never forget the handler is just as much a search expert as the dog. They are a team, after all. 2:42
    Edit: Thank you for making sure to say that. 21:13

      Thats why if you want to escape, you have to focus on evading and tricking not the dog, but the handler.

    • @NoOne-gm4ml
      @NoOne-gm4ml 2 years ago

      @rokyhawk6753 Went through SERE (POW training), and they told us "don't try to beat the dog; beat the handler" (e.g., go through stuff the handler won't want to).

    • @oakenshadow6763
      @oakenshadow6763 2 years ago

      @rokyhawk6753 He almost did with the first fans! She pull the dog off the second real trail for just a moment. If he had made three trails, I think it could have worked!

    • @rokyhawk6753

      @NoOne-gm4ml Should get experience in traversing rough terrain and be experienced in climbing so you can effectively evade.

    Bro, it's so cool how we aren't the only intelligent life on Earth, or potentially the universe.
    These dogs always impress me! And props to Shay, she deserves it

    • @moos5221
      @moos5221 2 years ago +18

      Very much the opposite... When you look at humanity you have to start to wonder if humans even are intelligent at all.

    • @ec5400
      @ec5400 2 years ago +3

      Don't forget, our intelligence is seen by ourselves. Also not everyone is using the capacity of that intelligence. But every dog is using their intelligence capacity.

      @ec5400 what do you mean? how are humans not using all of our intelligence?

  • @lucbloom

    I love ❤️ how Shay gives Zinka a lot of slack. Like eating the snacks is not what a puppy trainer would allow. But Zinka is a PRO so she can apparently be given respectful autonomy.

      And she knows that Mark wouldn't be putting poison in the food, like crims being hunted might do.
      PS: I thought she snickered at the food trap though, lol.

      I think it's also because this is not a crisis situation. Otherwise she would not be getting that slack.
