I’m not sure how long ago this video was made, but Rivian recently did an OTA update that, among other things, recalibrated the suspension. My R1T rides even better now and is more settled over poor roads. I’m sure it’s the same for the R1S. They also added a setting that automatically lowers suspension when put in park. Nice for shorter people or loading things in bed.
Hahaha talk about deja vu. This is the exact same shit people were saying about Teslas in 2018. Everything could be fixed with just a software update, surely.

The camera quality has gotten better with one of the latest updates. The range is surprisingly consistent. Rivian rep told me I'd get 280 because of my offroad tires, but I dont get less than 300. The downsides are that the maps is complete garbage, camera quality still isn't on par with others. The turning circle is garbage, and the air suspension makes weird noises.

Absolutely love my R1T to live with daily. Totally agree on the R1T being more of a game changer. I actually prefer the look of the SUV and it would serve my purpose better, but there's something about the truck that drew me in.
"Game changer"??? "Walls are closing in"? "The end is near"? "Russia collusion "? Electric cars exist since 1920's. They were "game changer" obviously. No 80,000 $ personal transport vehicle can ever be "a game changer". N E V E R.
Me too. Assuming a good financial year an R1T will be my next car. I've always wanted a truck, and used to drive a company Tacoma TRD in my younger years. They've just simply never been fast enough. That problem is roundly solved I would say
I generally love you guys’ videos but I think you missed the mark a little on this one. You talked a lot about the driving dynamics, and spent a lot of time talking about the parts of the interior that are the same, but you barely talked at all about the practicality/rear half, which is really the deciding factor for 98% of people between this and the truck. How big is the third row? Does everything fold flat? Do they have any other cool new outdoorsy features in the back?
We'll have to see how they hold up after years of use. They might only last to the end of the warranty period before absolutely falling apart. Rivian the company is also relatively new. They have money coming in from Amazon but they're still essentially a startup. If they burn through their reserves and go out of business in a few years then who's going to service their cars?
@3:20 Hi James, a construction engineer here. Cement is the binder in mortar, a type of concrete. In contact with water, it enters into a chemical reaction, as a result of which the mixture hardens, turning it into concrete. So the highways are made out of concrete! :)
Great job on the video to all involved! Thanks for making it. I wonder if because this thing is so fast it triggers something in your brain to compare it against sports cars that have a more planted ride. Does it feel more unstable than a Jeep Wrangler does on the highway? What about comparing it directly to a spec'd out Rubicon and a new 4Runner TRD Pro? Include an off-road comparison and it would be on my list of favorite videos ever. I've seen the R1T do things off-road that blew my mind, so I am very excited about what electric vehicles could do for the off-road enthusiasts around the world.
A 7000lbs car that will do 0-60 is 3 secs needs to handle very well or it will catch a lot of people out. With that amount of velocity, a sports car comparison is warranted.
I would like to think that the back story of the Mandarin Jarritos is that someone stuck it here and Thomas had no idea and the expression on his face when he opened the hatch was genuine.
So the SUV is unbalanced or they used the tuning for the R1T for the R1S that didn't take into account for the shorter wheel base and difference in the rear design of it and additional stuff to make it an SUV
Even though the R1T maybe a better vehicle, I think some of the context of this vehicle was lost in the comparison. Obviously driving dynamics was not one of those things and hopefully it can be fixed up with software and it's not baked into a flawed chassis. You'd buy the R1S to move people and luggage. With the 3rd row, how much trunk space do you have? Do the seats fold flat? These are some of the questions that weren't answered.
@@mcnillerandsons7906 Oh really, since it's all documented, maybe I shouldn't watch any reviews. FFS I'm giving constructive feedback on the video, thank you very much.

All these insanely fast and heavy EV trucks like the R1T and Hummer barreling down highways and through local roads is a scary though. Not to mention other behemoths like the G and Sclade V. The goal of EVs used to be light efficiency. Now it’s who can go the fastest with the largest and heaviest battery pack.
I think this stems from the cool-EV image chasing that Tesla started and is a swing in the totally opposite direction of “dorky vehicle” that EVs used to have. I’m still waiting on someone to make “an car” EV that isn’t obsessed with its EV-ness, and hopefully the Equinox EV does that
@@msdos32 imo the f150 lighting seems to do away the 'EV-ness' since it's literally an F150 body with a few changes in the interior. It's that boring lol. Would love to own one, but the range of it is abysmal for my use.
@@RandomCommenter-qu2oc Before Tesla modern EV's were usually weird little commuter cars that were sluggish and played too far into the "eco friendly" aesthetic. Tesla made normal looking EVs that are very quick and can keep up with or outrun sportscars at the stop light. They are minimalist in design, but they're not like early Nissan Leafs or many hybrids that tried to chase an eco-friendly futuristic appearance with silver and blue interior plastics and little leaf symbols plastered everywhere. I definitely believe that the Tesla fanbase is often incredibly annoying, but credit due where credit's due, Tesla did bring fast EVs with practical ranges to mass production.
An R1S is out of my price range for now, but Rivian stock is not. I love this SUV and hope, at least, RIVN stock values go way up with their awesome trucks!
It looks like an electric Wagoneer. I am not in the 100k electric car market, but if you are looking at a Tesla (no truck yet) or Lucid, this seems like a value.
The thing is, when you explaining some unpractical features that R1S provides, while sitting one of best designed, cool and comfy looking interior with some cool smart tech, I feel like the R1S makes you love itself anyway.
I make good money, and as I watch modern car reviews I can't help but feel priced out.. Glad I own my car, and won't be getting anything any time soon 🙃
Same, just bought an old h3t alpha with locking diffs on 35s for wayyyy less than a fraction of anything new and it has a 5.3 that you can get parts anywhere. Sure new cars are nice but I get so worried about all this long term reliability and also the price point they start at.
I'm getting suspicious that EV's are a way to charge an astronomical amount in the eventual move to a subscription model. The new Silverado tops out at well over 100k. Whoever heard of a 6 figure Silverado? And this Rivian doesn't even have carplay for the astronomical price.
Don't feel bad. Its not you not having enough, the market is just straight disgusting. $8k for a 1992 corolla with 80k miles... Its not that you're priced out, people are just taking on crazy debt to buy cars. Stay smart, don't buy now, prices will come down. If you get a persistent itch to drive a certain car, rent it on turo for a day to get it out of your system.
@@57precision I'm thinking that too. So many people are used to leasing or financing a car, when they eventually switch to a subscription based model people will lap it up because it won't feel different. Then we'll hear how subscriptions mean you don't have to deal with the costs of repairs and ownership which is a plus while the same people continue to pay $500-1500 a month for an electrical box with wheels.

I'm very surprised that nobody mentioned what happened on the display screen in the car. If you go to 11:07 and adjust your playback speed to 0.25, you will see that the screen glitches and shows the pickup truck model first before switching to the SUV model at about 11:08 lmaoo.
No matter what I can't be convinced about interior quality and ergonomics of a car which is all cheap tablets, no matter how responsive they are. Not having physical buttons is cutting corners. Great video from you guys as always!
Tablets are more expensive than physical buttons so I doubt they do it because they're cheap.
@@dakotawoodruff2622 most of modern cars have both the tablet and the buttons, so putting more functions in the tablet is definitely a cost saving move
@@dSCasp3r Except functionality if you load more into the tablet for main controls the more processing power and more programs and services will be needed to be ran, meaning even more money needs to be put into the screens.
I love how Thomas' voiceover at 6:22 clearly shows James is driving the shot.
Who knew the best way to make Top Gear USA actually work, and be exceedingly close to peak Jeremy/James/Richard era Top Gear UK, was to use a brit in canada and an actually canadian duo. Love your content!
And when they added Chris Harris in a few videos. That was the top gear we need right there
I saw one yesterday on the highway I was unaware that they released it so had to speed up to make sure I wasn’t seeing stuff but it’s a beautiful car.
As an owner of rivian stock, I'm dying for this thing to be a success.
Same.. its been a bumpy ride !
From what i heard the problem isnt how good the car is and more how many they can ship
Same here! My average is just under $19. Hopefully it gets large enough and then does a 4 for 1 split 😁

11:08 - I love how the screen briefly accidently shows the R1T...
Absolutely love my R1T to live with daily. Totally agree on the R1T being more of a game changer. I actually prefer the look of the SUV and it would serve my purpose better, but there's something about the truck that drew me in.
LOVE my R1T. Traded in my S and I am SO EXCITED. Love it. These guys give a really weird review.
I love the 6:20 switch to external shot during Thomas' test and you just see James face behind the wheel
Every time I watch a Rivian review (R1S & R1T) I’m blown away how good these vehicles seem to be.
I would get this over the truck version ,Rivian are starting to be the solid ev car maker not fancy ,just always consistent
@@bwofficial1776 The warranty period is 175,000 miles. 🤯
@@bwofficial1776 EV battery warranties are ridiculously good. Never find an engine with a 120,000 mile + warranty
"My love for this truck never existed." ..Thomas you are brutally honest....savage in a polite way.
RIVIAN: Because you may need a flashlight.
@3:20 Hi James, a construction engineer here. Cement is the binder in mortar, a type of concrete. In contact with water, it enters into a chemical reaction, as a result of which the mixture hardens, turning it into concrete. So the highways are made out of concrete! :)
I'm starting a petition to watch Thomas eat spicy things!
If you pause at 11:09 you can the screen glitch and first display a R1T and then quickly change to a R1S. Lol
I know, without even watching, that this will be a stellar review. Keep it up folks!
Hot ones Throttle House edition!!!!!!!! If he doesn't want to do it with you then I will.
Awesome job guys! The steering adjustment is actually easily accessible if you touch your profile picture on the top left. 😉
I was thinking that might be the case, given Tesla has similar shortcuts.
Solitas at the Valencia Town Center in Valencia, California is indeed not authentic Mexican food, but it is indeed god damn delicious.
I love the look of this and the truck twin
The black & white cutbacks to the RT1 remind me of the bad portions of those late-night infomercial commercials 😂
Bloody hell! PLEASE do Hot Ones! Thomas can tap out if he wants…Please!
11:08 Isn’t it funny how the screen briefly shows the picture of the truck and not the SUV?
This is the earliest I’ve ever been to a TH upload, it’s thrilling
I would like to think that the back story of the Mandarin Jarritos is that someone stuck it here and Thomas had no idea and the expression on his face when he opened the hatch was genuine.
Probably a callback to the banned sketch.
@@WatanabeNoTsuna. JoJo, the Rivian R1S looks like a hybrid combination of Tesla and Ford Expedition.
@@purwantiallan5089 Uhhhh... Thanks for the information, I guess? 🤔 🤷🏻♂️
In between uploads I will come back and just check that if anything was uploaded cause this channel is amazing
So the SUV is unbalanced or they used the tuning for the R1T for the R1S that didn't take into account for the shorter wheel base and difference in the rear design of it and additional stuff to make it an SUV
That feather on the headrest is the real star of this video... 😂✌🏽
Another excellent review!
Just because of: "... and I'm James" you guys deserve a like
Even though the R1T maybe a better vehicle, I think some of the context of this vehicle was lost in the comparison.
Seats fold flat and truck space is documented. Go search it.
@@mcnillerandsons7906 Oh really, since it's all documented, maybe I shouldn't watch any reviews. FFS I'm giving constructive feedback on the video, thank you very much.
The longest Jarritos ad I've ever watched 10/10
Y’all need to do a driving test where you drive through New Jersey and hunt charging stations at private residences.
Dial in max charging and that won't happen! PS- I live in NJ and own an r1t
@@profkeenan I’m sorry to hear that lol. At least the r1T off road capabilities come in use navigating some of the worse roads in the country. #govtpriorities

The bee is the real star of the show here
All these insanely fast and heavy EV trucks like the R1T and Hummer barreling down highways and through local roads is a scary though.
@@msdos32teslas and their owners are dorky idk what you mean

James' blood-sugar was definitely low for the filming of this episode! 😆
Yes, been waiting for you to feature the R1S!
It looks like an electric Wagoneer. I am not in the 100k electric car market, but if you are looking at a Tesla (no truck yet) or Lucid, this seems like a value.
Wagoneer 12- 13 mpg. 🤣🤣🤣

The thing is, when you explaining some unpractical features that R1S provides, while sitting one of best designed, cool and comfy looking interior with some cool smart tech, I feel like the R1S makes you love itself anyway.
LMAO I saw the intro on Instagram, you guys are SAVAGES! 🤣🤣🤣

They can’t even keep the lights on here in the southeast during the cold front a couple weeks ago… They’re pipe dreaming if they actually think the infrastructure is ready to charge an electric vehicle in every garage.
But then again they don’t care as long as suckers are willing to keep enabling these manufacturers and dealers so they can keep on scalping there customers.

I was at a small ranch. We were caught during some very heavy rain. Several inches of rain. I had to drive out of there with my Tesla. I was shocked how well it handles the mud. I never once got stuck. I have had my Range Rover there before in mud and it didn't do as good is my EV. I would love to try the Rivian in those conditions.
Lol the intro sketch 👍👍
When i was shopping for a car apple car play is literally a deal breaker if the car doesnt have it. If a car has a terrible infotainment, apple car play basically eliminates it. If it has a great infotainment apple car play just lets me listen and operate the music and the map in a way im comfortable and used to. So idk 90K car with no apple car play is a ruined moment.
