The 0-60 and the HP numbers don’t mean anything until you watch a mad lad push the vehicle to the absolute limit on a world famous hill climb like Pike’s Peak. That was nuts!
The stability of the car, the set of brakes, and the dexterity of the driver were outstanding. Incredible! The pilot dances with death throughout the narrow and steep mountain route. How wonderful! Rivian comes to Brazil!
Pack temps held all the way until 8:12 before going amber. Thermal control on this Gen 2 appears to be absolutely insane! And an impressive driver to boot!
8:30 - shoves understeer @ 111mph, feeds full throttle on exit, lifts, pitches it in over the bumps, full throttle exit, checks the rear view mirror, looks at the gauges then fist pumps the air. That's success right there!
Watching from the helicopter it looks so tame and casual, onboard, it's anything but! Great job Gardner and the Rivian team! So stoked to have my R1T Quad!
Incredible driving Gardner. You’ve got some serious stones to push a 7,000 lb truck along those cliffs at those speeds. My heart was pounding watching the video particularly around some of the high speed sweepers that got a little bouncy.
Epic the truck doesn’t have down force feature this is insane, incredible and faster than many other vehicles congratulations to the driver thanks for sharing!
Hearing the tires screech and seeing the speedometer while the clearance to the edge of the road in the side view gets so narrow and then some bumps are hit is absolutely terrifying and epic. Makes me wanna go take my Gen 1 Quad for a rip at probably half the speed and still feel like a daredevil 😅
The Ford "F-150" Lightning got a time of 8:54 where as the Rivian got a time of 10:54, two whole minutes less than the Rivian. All though the Ford was actually a fiberglass body resembling the shape of a truck on a race car chassis so it wasn't really a truck and Rivian still holds the world record for a production pickup truck on Pikes Peak.
@@alterbr33d No the F-150 super truck got that time. Completely different. There are maybe 1 or 2 of them. It was a truck specifically designed for such situations. The Rivian is a production truck. That you can drive on the road then go do that at the track.
@@alterbr33d That was not a production F-150. OK, sure they added the roll cage this one and tweaked the software, but they even used the production street tires on this. Last year this driver used his person R1T and only got 30 seconds less.
So cool!! I want one of these so bad. I think the Rivians aren't just great performers but they look great. I'm thrilled that VW is stepping in as a partner (future Scout platform?) and I'm rooting (and investing) for their success!!
Awesome and thanks for sharing. I think Pikes Peak was more interesting when it wasn’t paved though! Would love to see the Rivian tearing up that road when it was dirt.
The truck is a masterpiece, but the driver may have been even better. A murderous symphony of AWD tire squealing combined with vista's of plunging horror. A heroic expression of a man's will.
When i first heard of rivian before any r1ts were even in production, i never thought id see a video of one getting a 11 minute time on pikes peak. Ceazy times we live in
Impressive how long it stayed cool, than didn't greatly reduce power once warm. Please make us the R1X with really capable suspension and power. I've owned 2 rivians, big fan!
This is a great drive, would recommend it to anyone. Hint: the entry gates close 2 hours before the exit gates. So wait to enter until right before the gates close then pull off somewhere for awhile. What this does is allow uphill traffic to clear out. Then you can go balls to the wall. Illegally of course. I think the speed limit is like 25mph. If you don't do it that way, you'll be stuck driving behind some old granny the whole time going 25 mph Trust me on this, I've done it this way 3 times in 3 different vehicles of mine. I've also gone when there was traffic and that was miserable. This doesn't allow time for sightseeing though. This method is strictly for people who want to have a spirited drive and obviously risk driving off the mountain.
@@mortensenvick5711 It's a great drive in any car honestly. BUT, turbocharged cars are especially fun cause they don't lose as much power as naturally aspirated engines since the altitude is so high. In a naturally aspirated car, there's a 40% loss of HP at the top.
Just wondering about the battery, and other, temps during that amazing run. the Hyundai I5N boys said their cars, and they are great cars, could make the full climb without overheating or losing power. Was wondering if this truck could do the same? I see in the video on the bottom right the battery icon goes red, but that could just mean it's warm, and not slowing the truck at all. It looks like it is pulling hard all the way to the clouds. Just curious, as a huge EV fan, I love seeing the technology getting better and better. Really looking forward to the smaller R3, as I may be able to afford that one. Great run, and keep going back to the peak!
Might give better braking feel. Also if he was starting at 100% charge it couldn't use regen initially anyway, and disabling it would mean the braking feel wouldn't change as regen started to come in.
I've driven that road many times but not at anything near those speeds! Wild! Working those tires, too! Of course, when I've driven it, the altitude affects performance, even on fuel injected cars (drove it in carbureted cars as well...really felt the altitude). But with that Rivian, who needs oxygen? (besides the driver, of course)
The mass needed of the balls to understeer corner after corner towards a cliff like this must be enough to trigger those gravitational wave detectors.. Amazing driver!
Looks like they sorted a few things. Hopefully their new update will make my R1S not feel like it’s breaking its suspension knuckle over a road imperfection.😮
That is totally bonkers.
I was just watching your video on this lol
Yes! Now imagine what solid state batteries will do for the industry. We're just scratching the surface. 😲 😱
Battery was over heating in the last half so probably no endurance races for this beast. Still amazing to watch Gardner rip this peak
🤯
Bonkers isn't the term I'd use more like insanity. The set on this guy to run that in a pickup truck. Outstanding!
Is this a truck or a racing vehicle?
Rivian: Yes.
Best answer ever.
Best answer ever 😂
I would add luxury car given how quiet it is with quality interior materials and sound system…when not driven quite this exuberantly!

I made this same drive in my R1S a little over a week before this. My time was a bit slower.
You must train more.
watch your corners and carry your speed out of them.

Epic run! Gardner pushed so hard for that sub 11 minute time. Thanks Rivian for making these vehicles, and for posting the entire clip.

Nice! I own a R1S and these are fun vehicles to drive. That instant power is something that still impress me daily.
Congratulations Gardner and the entire team of talented people at Rivian. So much to be proud of!
To think I get to drive this same truck everyday, definitely my happy place. Thanks Rivian❤️

Yeah, that was pretty sketch
Definitely a great save
Made me clench for sure. Tires must've been real greasy at that point!
When I heard the record I was excited. Seeing the video I'm terrified. It's honestly kinda scary that this is a production truck. 😬
Could definitely do with some aero. That was sketchy!
WOW! Stock as a rock straight from the factory, including the tyres. That's impressive!
By far the most impressive, exciting and nail biting drive of the day!
I have a Ford Lightning but I gotta say this is an amazing run by this truck. Props to Rivian.
Did you see fords run? Incredible
To quote Ron Weasley, that was bloody brilliant!
Yer a wizard, Gardner!

The last two minutes were heart stopping! Holy 100+mph. 😮 Go Rivian!
Incredible truck and incredible driving!! Congratulations Rivian!

Super excited to be a part of this company.
insane! well done Rivian and Gardner.
Rivian should offer some limited package with this livery, or some inspired by it, much the way Bentley did a few years ago.
Any halfway decent wrap shop can do this
Congrats to the entire Rivian team! I love my R1S, hands down the best vehicle I've owned!
Great to see Rivian doing stuff like this! Such awesome vehicles.
ASCEND TO THE CLOUDS!!! Amazing run by Gardner Nichols!
