Yes I hope they stick around. One thought I had is why not drop the attempt at a charging network and just save the money. The RAN seems like a waste of time when so many other companies are way ahead of the game. I Would think it would make them focus on manufacturing.
@@jml9550 Lucid has a better chance to go the way of the DoDo. If anything Rivian now has a good product, and would get bought out. If not a US company, a Chinese company. That is if WW3 does not break out before that.
For the second row at 1:50 try pushing the bottom part of the seat far back to the position you want BEFORE locking the backrest back in place. This is usually how most SUVs work
I get stopped a few times a day in my R1T. People LOVE it. Oh yeah, me too. It's awesome. AWESOME. I had a Tesla S and this is just next level. I mean, the S was incredible and this is that same leap. BUY A RIVIAN, you won't regret it.
Finally a review from women’s/moms prospective. Because let’s be honest. People are not getting this car for off-roading. It’s a family SUV that is super cool.
I love my Pacifica hybrid. One reason is just the sliding doors are huge and make getting babies and kids in and out way easier. Without worrying about swing out to bash anything in parked next to either with the door or a baby.
Absolutely agree the build quality is great . Now it’s a race to get more affordable vehicles so the company can make money . Hope they survive as I think Consumers will be awarded by the existence of rivian .
For the back seat, if you push the bottom section back first it should go to the previous position, then raise the backrest and it should also go back to where you had it set before. Most manual secos rows operate that way. And they all get messed up if you pull the backrest up first.
That noise in the front is the active air shutter actuator. If you look though the grill on right hand side you will see it move as you approach vehicle. It just needs a simple spray lubricant like super lubricant or something safe on plastic. Easy fix.
This is the best well-rounded R1S review I’ve seen. Can’t wait to get mine in 3-6 months Jul-Sept timeframe! The Ankerwork mic works well-I may just have to grab them with your coupon code.
I don't normally like plugs/sponsors in videos but man those mics are really good. Also, it's crazy to me how there are plenty of electric vehicles that are way better than Teslas (outside of the charging network), but Tesla still gets all the recognition. Rivian, Lucid, etc.
Tesla took charging infrastructure seriously while other automakers refused. This is why they are still leaders in the game. Same with being very proactive with software updates. Talk to any rivian owner who also has a Tesla and they will admit Tesla is still light years better in many aspects. I’m just glad we have more options than Tesla only!
Tesla seems to get the clout because they do everything damn near perfect. Sentry, DCFC pre-conditioning, display performance, regular updates, driving performance, keyless entry, mobile app features, efficiency, delivery experience, autopilot, phantom drain, charging network, route planning. Rivian, Lucid, etc can do *many* of these things extremely well, but not all. It's a pick and choose for most EVs (and new cars in general)
John - I think that noise is the louvre that varies the amount of air coming in to cool the batteries. A service guy who was fixing a software issue in my truck noticed it and he lubricated it. That made is a lot quieter.
14:59. That creeky noise is the flaps on the air inlet. Mine had made a similar noise and I sprayed all the pivot spots where plastic touches other plastic and it pretty much went away. I used the same dry lube as for the Tonneau
As a Ford F150 lightning owner the best thing I can say about that front hood is it doesn’t sound like a dump truck backing up when it’s opening or closing.
I own some shares in this company and I really want this SUV but I have to wait for a used one in about two or three years. Right now I have an Audi e-tron and love it. The only problem with the Audi is it is very low on technology. It's just a luxury car that you plug up but it is solidly built.
Back when it was introduced I thought the front of the Rivian looked a little goofy, but seeing them drive around town now... it's grown on me. It looks kind of high tech/retro now. I can't believe I'm actually considering one, but I am. The wait for the R2 is going to seem like forever. Can't wait to see that. The 360 on the Lucid Air will spoil you.
For any prospective owners, this is by far the most comprehensive review from an owner's perspective that I've seen on YT for an R1S. Thanks John! (PS: Been a fan since the Nokia days - keep up the great work!)
Great video! Thanks for showing a real practical use case with no frills. Would love to see a video on your trip to Mammoth and your experience using the Adventure network!
the creaking maybe coming from the louvers that are behind the grill and open and close to control air flow to a radiator behind it. my r1t started making a similar noise but i just sprayed some dry lube at the joint and it stopped the noise.
@@jon4lakers yeah it sounded pretty similar. i carry dry lube around to maintain my tonneau cover so i just used that at the joints on the side of the louvers and the noise went away.
I used to have a 2017 Land Rover Discovery and this is almost a direct comparison size wise. I LOVED the Disco but after 90k miles I had an engine failure. I'm considering a 2016-18 Toyota Land Cruiser but will also have same issue with fuel consumption. I drive about 1500 miles a month about 18,000 miles a year and in a mouth I was dropping about 400$ in fuel. After an 8 year run it's about a $36,000 in fuel cost at only $3 a gallon. I really want one of these I think it will really fit the bill. My disco had air suspension and it made similar sounds when I first get going in the morning.

Hey Jon, I had that same clicking noise on my R1T. The louvres under the front grill are sticking. I used some dry lube where they pivot on each side and it’s never happened again.
My wife and I own a tesla. She was running into issues quite often when she would walk up and her phone was not unlocking the car. I ran some experiments, and I found that if your wife, like mine, keeps her phone in a back pocket, then that causes issues with the walk up unlock feature. If you keep your phone in a front pocket, it should work most of the time
Great review! Overall a good vehicle, just seems like a lot "compromises" for the price. For the price of the R1T I would expect a little more refinement. Still considering one!
I don't understand when people say it's such a blessing not to have to buy gas anymore when this car is up near 100,000 dollars. At what point is it not saving you money getting an electric car?
You can get an equivalent Toyota Highlander hybrid for $54K. The price difference get you a lot of gas and maintenance. The only thing Rivian has is acceleration. Nothing more, nothing less.
My advice, give them a few more years to build out. And actually see if they’ll make it long term. $80k+ is a lot to spend on something that you can’t get serviced and reliability is completely unknown because it’s so new. Unless you’re loaded and don’t care.

Thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated. Yay or nay? There’s giving me $8K more than CarMax for my Model S. They’re really wanting to convert Tesla customers.
hows the ride and driving dynamics difference between the R1S and the R1T? a lot of YT and auto reviewers have said the R1S is more stiff and uncomfortable and doesnt feel as stable while driving. wondering what you think.
The driving dynamics of the R1S are not great. I had my R1S for a couple of weeks before getting rid of it due to the way it handled. As long as you are ok with it driving like a truck, you will be satisfied. If you are looking for an SUV with sporty handling (like an X5), you will not be happy.
Great review. Will you be another Rivian if the company continue to be losing money? Will you be concern if they will be around before the car warranty expire ?

Buying a 90k car for 'gas prices' is kind of ridiculous. I love the r1s, waiting for one myself, but let's not fool ourselves - you don't buy this for the gas savings lol
I think if you are going out and spending around 100K on an SUV anyway, the savings on fuel by purchasing an EV SUV definitely is a little bonus. Based on my yearly mileage, with my current ICE SUV of similar size to the r1S, I have spent over $50K in fuel costs alone over the past 10 years. I calculated that the Rivian would have cost me between $6 and 7K to drive the same distance, based on my home charging cost here in Texas… That’s definitely not nothing.
I love when someone tries to justify spending $100,000 on a vehicle by saying gas prices lol. Gas is not that big of a deal, and more than likely about the same cost as electricity.
After driving my R1S for only an HOUR, I absolutely, positively HATED IT!!! Worst experience ever. Immediately put it up for sale and made a ridiculous profit. Bought an F150 Lightning which made the R1S feel like a rattling box of rocks. What a POS!!!
