My Dad has an R1S and I have a '23 Model X. IMO, Rivian wins on exterior looks and interior materials used. They are tied when it comes to ride quality, Tesla maybe slight edge on handling. Tesla wins on driving tech, overall tech, and user experience. Rivian can fix that with software updates. If they do, it will be tough to beat.
Ryan, I would love for the Folks at Rivian to ditch the 7 seater as standard and make it a 5 seater… make the 7 seat an upgrade and include the Large Battery Pack as standard, honestly I think that Rivian would increase sales by making this small change, and it would be more cost effective. Plus they need to make sure it stays under $80,000 with a couple of options. (I am a share holder since the launch and am hoping that they will make some changes to improved the stock value.)
Couldn’t agree more. I would consider the R1S but have no need for 7 seats, so if the advantage was a bigger battery pack (or reduced price) it would be a compelling proposition.
I would sell my Model 3 and buy this Full Size SUV if they made it with two Captain chairs in the middle so that it's easier for kids to get to the third row.
Adjusting the seat for 3rd row comfort starting at about 7:50, then showing what room is like in the 2nd and 3rd rows with the seat adjusted for you was great. Most reviews just show the room with the seat all the way forward, then all the way back.
Absolutely love Rivian. Should be getting my dual-motor R1S this summer. We are a family of 5, with all 3 kids in booster/car seats. Looked at the Model X, but the 3rd row just didn't have enough space, and the lack of truck space was huge. We test-drove the R1S and will be doing another test drive this upcoming weekend, and were pleasantly surprised at how much cargo space there is between the trunk and frunk. I'm 5'10, and I sat in the 3rd row during our test drive, and I had plenty of space. Overall I love Rivian and pray they can continue and don't go bankrupt!
Have you test driven with all three kids seats? The second row in the R1S is narrower than in the Model X. It’s going to be very tight, especially in the middle seat. I hope someone makes an EV SUV with more passenger space than both the Model X and R1S soon.

I had the R1T and now the 23' Y. The R1T, hands down, had the much better sound system. The entry access into a Rivian is just aggravating though. I sold the T since we have a S on order, but i'll need to delay delivery until they can sort out some of these bugs
I'd argue the sound system. It depends on how you use it too. The Y has the advantage of being able to offline download Tidal Hi-Fi. The Rivian is restricted there, so I can get a lot more fidelity out of the Y. The Rivian just has the ability for more bass and subs, but that doesn't improve the system in my experience. Either way, they're changing away from Meridian: www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/rivian-confirms-no-meridian-sound-system-in-my-r1s-it-has-in-house-audio-system.13819/page-18
@@RyanShawtech I respect your opinion and will agree to disagree on this one. Though, both music sources in both cars I've tried had relatively mediocre BT fidelity (not high fidelity like Tidal). I paid my way through college installing high end systems in cars way back in the day, I'm older now with older ears but my "premium" sound system in my Y is too bright and boomy at the same time. There's a lot of sound fill but not much depth and fidelity. The soundstage is better in the Y but the DSP and speaker quality was better in my T. Sound is so subjective so perhaps there's a hidden menu in my Y for sound manipulation I have yet to find! All I see is the EQ with a separate sub volume slider. I also have a 4680 Austin build... not sure if I got a shittier "premium" system than other Ys.
I agree. My R1T system sounds much better than my M3P did stock. And I have the new rivian system and not the meridian. I upgrade the tesla to the light harmonic system and they are pretty even now
I'm more curious about the route planning and charging experiences compared to your Tesla, especially now that Tesla has opened up it's charging network.
You will hear more noise in a liftback, wagon, etc. compared to a sedan where the back seat isolates the cabin. But extra attention to noiseproofing CAN mitigate that.
I'm seriously considering selling my Model Y and buy a R1S. One thing that all the reviews comparing Rivian and Tesla do not cover the comparison of how the companies support their customers. My son owns a R1T and I own a model Y. Tesla sucks in customer support and Rivian really goes the extra mile in this area. I found Tesla customer support is basically none. And whenever you do get hold of anybody in the service area, their attitude generally come across as arrogant to a point that I find them very unpleasant to deal with.
I knew that was bonelli park, wish I had been walking through when you were filming. Still have mine on pre-order for q4 of this year. Loved the r1t when I got to test drive. The lack of apple carplay integration was a bummer
I'm currently driving a full-size truck and would love to get into an EV like the Rivian R1S. Really like the looks and the quality they've put into it. Having said that, I have yet to see a reviewer really touch on entry height. Will my 5'2 wife or elderly parents have a difficult time getting into it, because there's no step, or is the lowest available setting (in sport mode) low enough to make entry/egress easy for them? Kind of wish they'd have kept the R1T wheelbase for the R1S, though. More cargo space, more room for passengers. Probably improved ride quality as well. Alas, $100K is well and truly out of reasonable purchase territory, so the Rivian will not be living in my driveway anytime soon. Thanks for the review!!
Curious if that slight delay in acceleration was with stabilization on? Setting stabilization to "reduced" might remove that (as well as having it in Sport, lowest, and stiff when launching for max effect). Great video.
awesome review! what ever happened to third row optional?! I am rarely driving more than 4 total people so I would much rather have max cargo space. no the third row doesn't look like it takes up much room but i would still rather have more cargo space than the seating option. also, if there was no third row and that cargo rail system went all the way along to the back seats that would be an great addition!
Just finished my deal on my used 22 and this was well timed! Any ideas why my climate control is unresponsive in the vehicle while operating? I give inputs , but the recent themselves immediately
I put down a deposit on this last year, but I took it back and bought a new 4Runner The quality, as you can see, won't be there for a minute, so getting one before next year is risky I'm a fan, hope they become the next Tesla, but getting lone this year is clearly risky I think you get a lot for your money. Will eventually be the best new vehicle under $100k
I want one of these, but a smaller and cheaper version no larger than a Subaru Forester/Toyota Rav4/ or even closer in size to a Subaru Crosstrek would be ideal. Both the R1S and R1T are bigger than anything I would want to have for my daily driver. If they could keep the same build quality and style, that would be awesome.
Same. Even a minor diet would make me excited. A couple inches are huge when you’re talking about a vehicle ripping through air. The way Honda has kept their efficiency high has been hood height. Easy noticeable when you start parking one next to every car for years. Ideal vehicle for me is a Ute station wagon situation but the R1T lowered would do it for me.
Hello fellow drummer. Quick question, is the rear bumper super high on the R1S? Would it be difficult to lift gear into the vehicle? My main concern is my SKB Trap case. It weighs around 100 pounds fully loaded. I can get it into and out of a Honda Odyssey fairly easily on my own due to the low threshold of the rear entry of the van. Thanks for your reviews!
You should also mention the efficiency of the R1S as it is very inefficient compared to most other EVs plus its idle drain. The size makes it ideal for a roadtrip but the inefficiency is a big con for that plus the lack of a charging network (even though Rivian Adventure Network is building out and improving)
@@Joeblk10 efficiency isn’t really an issue with ice cars. You just pay more for gas. It is a problem with EV because you get less range and spend more time at chargers. It doesn’t have a heat pump so it is inefficient in cold and has insane phantom drain. All things a potential buyer should know. I’m supposed to get my R1S next year but I’ll be taking my X Plaid for LA to mammoth trips. It requires half the power and on top of that fills up power faster. The R1S will be my local car which is a shame for it being an “adventure” car
@@cwang9915 yet my R1T has more range than my M3P... Yes a bigger battery and a little longer at fast charging but ten minutes more at a fast charger isn't gonna kill me. And yes I've used it as a real truck and not a grocery getter. And the phantom drain thing I haven't seen. I lose about 1 percent a day with gear guard off. No different than my tesla. And about 3 to 4 percent with it on. Again, similar to my Tesla. This issue was known to be fixed shortly after they came out. They have a way to go on software I will admit but youre spouting talking points from the haters that are either outdated or uninformed.
@@Joeblk10 mistyped. I mean rivian less efficient than a X not less range. Efficiency and charging curve is what matters for time efficiency on road trips. The rivian needs a huge pack to achieve the same epa range which means a lot more weight which hits its efficiency. The R1S would become our backup car which is kind of a waste given its purpose and size.
Not letting your kids have control of the AC could be considered a positive as well. Younger kids tend to mess with the buttons and screw up your battery usage, also forget to turn it off. "sync" button would be necessary.
This is priced right. The reports on Phantom drain and the size is a deal breaker for me. I am 6.5 “ tall. My wife and most of the people in my family are pretty tall. It's still the Cybertruck for me.
I hope that the R2 has ironed out the issues I'm seeing on the youtube reviews and long term owner videos. I feel like for $45~55k, the issues will be much easier to forgive or overlook than seeing them in a $100k vehicle.
Quad Bosch motors, new dual-motor designed/made in-house is almost as quick (only a few tenths off) with only 2 motors, and is oil-cooled like a Tesla motor. Oil-cooled quad-motors will follow, imagine 0-60 2.5-2.7?
The one thing I don’t understand is wifi in the car…if anything will be a hotspot, it’s going to be your phone. The option for the car to connect to wifi, that makes sense. Cause I got a hotspot in my pocket at all times.
I’m just happy to see other vehicles. All Tesla models look really bad. So plain / boring. They really need to spice things up a bit more. The cybertruck is spicy… but weird. I bought a polestar3 performance. Personally I love it. I think it’s the best looking suv. And the on road performance / handling will be insane. Coming q4 2023 apparently
Happy that your going with a EV. However, it’s a BYD with a very good Polestar/Volvo “wrap”. 😂 To be clear-nobody makes Cuckoo clocks like the Germans! Tesla? They’ve put the iPhone 20 on wheels. 😳
Bumpier than any recent Model S and X. But a lot better than Model 3 and Y. Similar to how the original Model X drove before redesigned suspension with Raven models.
People that have it say it is incomparable to Tesla. Tesla’s by far is above and beyond and better. Hands down. Therefore, too bad. No Rivian for me. Maybe in 2 years if the company is still around. But by then, Tesla would’ve made even more improvements. Oh well.
I mean, considering the features provided and the material quality, I would argue that it is worth the price but might be a little more expensive than the competitors. If you look at the Model X for example, that comes in at around $94,000 and the plaid is just over $100,000. Plus, I believe the Rivian R1S has the Tesla Model X beat in terms of interior space because of the more boxy shape. Edit: I also forgot to mention the amount of OEM customization you can also do during your purchase. If anything the price this comes in at might even be a bargain to some.
Let's hope Tesla learns how to make a car that doesn't feel like you're driving a recycling bin with seats with thighs for people shorter than 5'6". I drove my buddies Rivian and the build quality is orders of magnitude more solid feeling than even a loaded Model S.
From my experience MBUX and the Hummer EV is in co1st place and Tesla is perhaps more complete but a second or third depending how you count but either 3 will do. Nothing come close exercept I would say in China Xpeng and although a distant next BYD but love their swiveling display and once again don’t is coming to NA
I still cannot imagine how much Apple wants to integrate Apple CarPlay with these cars?? So annoying that people cannot use that apple CarPlay with these great cars. I get that these EV makers want you to use their ‘experience’, but using Apple CarPlay makes things so much easier.
My biggest frustration is that I live in a metropolitan area of 1million plus people (Omaha) yet Rivian has no service center in my state or the state next to me (IA). I have to drive 3 hours away to Kansas City to get service if I have an issue. I’d buy one if not for this. They need to expand more service centers or at least announce plans for future centers and when they’ll come online.
I feel ya…but it’s a chicken/egg thing. If more people in your area put an order in, of course they would open up a service center. Considering their production ramp up limits, it makes zero economic sense to add the expense of a service center in your area when they can’t yet meet the demand of producing vehicles for the service centers they already have. They will get there eventually. When they do, you will absolutely love this thing. I’m 50 years old, have own a lot of “aspirational” cars. This, is without a doubt, THE best I’ve ever owned.
Loved your review, very detailed and clear. That said just one piece of feedback: you spent way too much time tinkering with the 3rd row seats haha 😋! Just because every R1S comes with third row seats don't mean most prospective buyers would be interested in this. I'd hypothesize that only a small % of buyers would actually be interested in the third row. Anyway other than that, loved your review!

Sound is so subjective so perhaps there's a hidden menu in my Y for sound manipulation I have yet to find! All I see is the EQ with a separate sub volume slider. I also have a 4680 Austin build... not sure if I got a shittier "premium" system than other Ys.
I would think you should get a good stereo in a 80k SUV. I hope they can make it long term and continue to improve.
15:03 - The video on the right...is that of the R1S? Or the RIT? That looks like the tonneau cover of the R1T.
You will hear more noise in a liftback, wagon, etc. compared to a sedan where the back seat isolates the cabin. But extra attention to noiseproofing CAN mitigate that.
Thanks for being detailed and honest!
How much does your r1s car insurance? Would it be more expensive than Model x?
What was added to the right rear corner of this r1s visible at 0:18 looks like an oddly shaped reflector.
The seat folding bit: avoiding to fold the 2nd row and want to put back up 3rd row is true when you have a baby car seat at the 2nd row...
GREAT review of the seat spacing, but it seems that Ryan may have unwittingly exposed some experiences that may have scarred him as a child, lol ;?)
I knew that was bonelli park, wish I had been walking through when you were filming. Still have mine on pre-order for q4 of this year. Loved the r1t when I got to test drive. The lack of apple carplay integration was a bummer
If it wasn't for the Cybertruck and Tesla's FSD I'd buy a Rivian. Very compelling vehicle, and a fair review.
“Ride quality is great. Really smooth!”
- as the camera is shaking from the infamous Rivian R1S bounciness and stiff suspension. 😄
It has a "kneel mode" for entry if needed :-)
Curious if that slight delay in acceleration was with stabilization on? Setting stabilization to "reduced" might remove that (as well as having it in Sport, lowest, and stiff when launching for max effect). Great video.
No matter what you try to do, the Rivians do not have that immediate acceleration at pedal press like with Teslas.
@@PH-yj5otThey fixed it. It is instant now.
Great color/wrap. What is the exact wrap you used?
Thanks Ryan !
awesome review! what ever happened to third row optional?! I am rarely driving more than 4 total people so I would much rather have max cargo space. no the third row doesn't look like it takes up much room but i would still rather have more cargo space than the seating option. also, if there was no third row and that cargo rail system went all the way along to the back seats that would be an great addition!
I agree with everything you said. Thank you.
Sounds like you’re asking for the R1T there.
Good review, thanks! Quad motor configuration has some serious advantages. Hope Rivian hangs in there, but I'm still holding out for the Cybertruck.
Eww, it's looks like a failed 80s experiment, why? lol
Just finished my deal on my used 22 and this was well timed! Any ideas why my climate control is unresponsive in the vehicle while operating? I give inputs , but the recent themselves immediately
I put down a deposit on this last year, but I took it back and bought a new 4Runner
The quality, as you can see, won't be there for a minute, so getting one before next year is risky
I'm a fan, hope they become the next Tesla, but getting lone this year is clearly risky
I think you get a lot for your money. Will eventually be the best new vehicle under $100k
Usually i m not sad when a car price exceeds my budget. this one makes me sad though, don't like missing something feeling.
The vehicle has a kneel mode to allow for easier loading if necessary
I'm curious to see the Lucid SUV
It's coming, officially revealed in November.
What color are the rear indicators? If it's the blinking brake light it's a major fail for me.
When are you gonna look into the ford f150 lightning?
You should also mention the efficiency of the R1S as it is very inefficient compared to most other EVs plus its idle drain. The size makes it ideal for a roadtrip but the inefficiency is a big con for that plus the lack of a charging network (even though Rivian Adventure Network is building out and improving)
It's a full size real SUV. Not one in name only. Of course it's less efficient. You wouldn't compare a car to a truck for efficiency.
Younger brother trauma. 😂
I'm a sucker for the front design.
Not letting your kids have control of the AC could be considered a positive as well. Younger kids tend to mess with the buttons and screw up your battery usage, also forget to turn it off. "sync" button would be necessary.
I still don't understand why the max pack is available on the R1T (truck) but not the R1S (SUV)
Is it quieter than a Model Y?
At twice the price of the Model Y after tax credit, the Rivian should be quieter.
Quieter than model x
Quieter than Model 3 and Y.
Quieter than original Model S and X.
Louder (and bumpier) than newer Model S and X.
Watch marques brownlee's R1S review posted today
Rivian R1S 😍
like it over the pickup just wish there was a 2 row opt.
This is priced right. The reports on Phantom drain and the size is a deal breaker for me. I am 6.5 “ tall. My wife and most of the people in my family are pretty tall. It's still the Cybertruck for me.
How did you not talk about the flashlight in thew door
13:02 "Oh! You touched my tralala..."
I hope that the R2 has ironed out the issues I'm seeing on the youtube reviews and long term owner videos.
I feel like for $45~55k, the issues will be much easier to forgive or overlook than seeing them in a $100k vehicle.
What about NACS as a consideration?
Why place a charge port where it is likely to get smashed and be unusable?
Is there a dark theme for the UI? I find bright menus and screens irritating, especially at night.
Yes
A lithium battery that looks like a jerrycan to hang on rear bumper would be interesting for off road adventures. 😁
My sister and I always fought over the third row growing up. 🤣😂
The possibility of the charge port being broken is very high, as it is in a place that is constantly exposed to accidents.
Quad Bosch motors, new dual-motor designed/made in-house is almost as quick (only a few tenths off) with only 2 motors, and is oil-cooled like a Tesla motor. Oil-cooled quad-motors will follow, imagine 0-60 2.5-2.7?
You mentioned something about the meridian sound going away?
Rivian is no longer using Meridian branded speakers in the vehicle.
Tesla has the X, Y, and Cyber- yet shocked none are proper Sport Utility Vehicles. Rivian comes along and first version nails it.
Do you actually get 303 miles of range.
Can the 3rd row recline?
Like it better than the model X?
3rd row seats have no adjustments.
got a model 3 for the price, but if i could afford one i think id be an early rivian adopter for sure, looks fantastic
The one thing I don’t understand is wifi in the car…if anything will be a hotspot, it’s going to be your phone. The option for the car to connect to wifi, that makes sense. Cause I got a hotspot in my pocket at all times.
Manufacturers do the software updates using that connection.
Does it have a bumppy ride like Tesla?
Bumpier than any recent Model S and X. But a lot better than Model 3 and Y.
Similar to how the original Model X drove before redesigned suspension with Raven models.
Imagine if Rivian taps into the charging hardware from Tesla now that it’s publicly available.
They already have. Tesla chargers are on the built in map.
The headlights make it look like Mr . Krabb
AT tires range now states 274
How does the enhanced autopilot compare to Tesla's?
I want to know the same thing. Ryan please let is know. Thanks
People that have it say it is incomparable to Tesla. Tesla’s by far is above and beyond and better. Hands down. Therefore, too bad. No Rivian for me. Maybe in 2 years if the company is still around. But by then, Tesla would’ve made even more improvements. Oh well.
What about the $93,000?
I mean, considering the features provided and the material quality, I would argue that it is worth the price but might be a little more expensive than the competitors. If you look at the Model X for example, that comes in at around $94,000 and the plaid is just over $100,000. Plus, I believe the Rivian R1S has the Tesla Model X beat in terms of interior space because of the more boxy shape.
Edit: I also forgot to mention the amount of OEM customization you can also do during your purchase. If anything the price this comes in at might even be a bargain to some.
What about it? Can you point to a competitor with equal features at a lower price point?
Definitely like the vehicle, but the range is subpar compared to the model X at 348 range.
Seems like a good car, but with butterface design. It may end up in the same category as AMC cars, the Fiat Multipla and the PT Cruiser.
Let's hope Tesla learns how to make a car that doesn't feel like you're driving a recycling bin with seats with thighs for people shorter than 5'6". I drove my buddies Rivian and the build quality is orders of magnitude more solid feeling than even a loaded Model S.
The irony of a Tesla owner talking about panel alignment 🤣🤣🤣
From my experience MBUX and the Hummer EV is in co1st place and Tesla is perhaps more complete but a second or third depending how you count but either 3 will do. Nothing come close exercept I would say in China Xpeng and although a distant next BYD but love their swiveling display and once again don’t is coming to NA
I still cannot imagine how much Apple wants to integrate Apple CarPlay with these cars??
So annoying that people cannot use that apple CarPlay with these great cars.
I get that these EV makers want you to use their ‘experience’, but using Apple CarPlay makes things so much easier.
Are they delivering vehicles at scale though? 8000 in Q1 2023 doesn't sound like volume production to me.
U didn’t use the key card at the right spot 😅
