I clicked on this out of curiosity expecting to be mildly amused to hear about one of my favorite supporting characters from a TV show, and instead I was moved to tears to learn about the life of a talented and sweet woman, her friendships and loves, and a life cut too short by cancer. And yet it still made me smile, was life affirming, and gave me a whole new appreciation of someone who I just knew as the character whose name became synonymous with 'nosy neighbor.' Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful story. This made my day.

    • @lapislazuli7876
      @lapislazuli7876 Год назад

I agree. Alice had the most comical facial expressions of any actor I’ve ever seen. I think Dick York also had incredible facial expressions and that’s what made his interpretation of Darrin Stephens so memorable. The way a face lights up and scrunches or reacts is everything in comedy. Facial plasticity is important. Jim Carrey understood this very well and made a career out of it. The other comediennes who did this so well were Lucille Ball & Carol Burnett. In modern times, the actress who epitomises this style of female comedic facial plasticity is Monica Horan who played Amy MacDougall-Barone in “Everybody Loves Raymond.” Monica is the modern day Alice Pearce and should play Gladys in any remake of Bewitched. Perfect casting.

Well I am crying. I have nothing but admiration for this little GIANT of a woman. I know that she had to be in great pain, and yet she worked hard to make is laugh. We wouldn't have known what she was going through had it not been for the weight loss.
My Mom fought cancer for 12 years. In the end when she died her tiny little body was wrought with cancer. One time as I was hugging her, I felt lumps all around her rib cage. I asked Mom what they were. She said they're cancer tumors honey. I asked why don't they remove them. She said those aren't doing any harm. It's the tumors in my lungs that are killing me. She said all this during our looonng morning hug. She never stopped smiling, she told me how much she loved me, she said that I was her favorite child, and that she always wanted that morning hug from me.
After she died, over the years during family gatherings I had conversations with my siblings (2 brothers 5 sisters). Turns out we all had similar conversations with Mom, and she told each one of us that..."you are my favorite child"
I'm not sure why I told you this story, but it sure feels good remembering this.
      Thank You Gladys Kravitz

What a wonderful story about Alice Pearce. She is my personal favorite incarnation of Gladys Kravitz. Had no idea she'd started with so many icons like Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire and even Agnes Moorhead in so many musicals. Glad she found a man who truly loved her after the loss of her first husband. This profile segment almost moved me to tears. I remember watching the show in the mid 60s. Many of us did notice (back then) how thin she became. But she always seemed so full of energy in her performances so one questioned anything. Then, she just disappeared from the show. The public didn't find out until much later what had happened to her. What an amazing talent she was! R.I.P. Alice Pearce.

@@robertsprouse9282 Hi Robert, we never did have guns in the way you guys did (presuming your american) psychologically or physically. We did have a buy back a long time ago under an amnesty. Not sure why we never had the same attitude towards arms as america ....a personal guess is that maybe at the beginning when mostly convicts, they did not want convicts getting their hands on them easily. I think farmers still have them under proper license as they probably always have...for putting animals down or whatever.
I would not say we are returning to penal colony, maybe we have been a nanny state for a while...imho. Something that was on news a couple of weeks ago....a country older man, in a small country town went to the pub and when cops came in seen his pocket knife in his belt and they fined him for holding a weapon (not sure what law exactly) made him leave it at home. Weird thing is most people in country carry a small folding knife...always need to cut rope, etc small jobs. Probably the result of an over anxious cop, but strange all the same. I did go to states a little before pandemic hit...I have to admit, I was a little nervous thinking anyone can have a gun, if I said a cranky word, well who knows. Needless to say I was as nice as pie, and very few harsh words (well except to a very nasty hotel guy) I did tell him off just a little. However I did like most people, found most friendly and helpful, would love to go back maybe when things are a little more normal and yes, they open the jail cell.....ha ha. For me as I am asthmatic it was probably all for the best, maybe !, but I admit very frustrating all the same. Personally I would not like to own a gun, being a smallish female maybe a small maze? spray ? whatever they're called.

@@chrisoliva530, you apparently have not seen Aussie cops choking women over not having masks on your outside walkways, outside.. where according to the CDC the amount of cases that springs from outdoor exposure that lead to death, or the hospital, are practically infinitesimal, if that.
Your government has been able to beat up on maskless males walking outside, for the same reason= no firearms allowed in the cities and suburbs.
Farmers are in remote places and cannot bring them into their towns, too, right?
No self defense from folks not only carrying guns in those towns, but other weapons, right? I mean the police have guns, you have knives. Guess who wins that standoff?
Cops carrying clubs and arms? Right?
And, you because of conditioning, just shrug it off?
Unfortunately ma'am, people who are also gullible in the U.S. can feel placated in the same way.
Tell me, do you remember what the NAZIs did once they had gun registration?
Do you know in BRITAIN according to INTERPOL research it takes the average burglar 13 minutes to case a house, whereas in the U.S., its an hour.
      Why is that?
Well, the crook in G.BRIT. does not have to guess who has guns, and who doesn't.
The latter increases the frequency of burglaries.
As to why we have a different attitude toward guns than you folks do, we learned from being a colony of BRITAIN, and from our EUROPEAN roots.
We saw what happens in countries where the citizenry cannot arm themselves. We had free humans over here once we rebuffed the BRITS, and you're right, you started as a penal colony..and based on how many of you are reacting to having your freedom stymied now, how y'all like being treated like furniture put up in the attic/cellar, in exchange for security in the old cellblock, you folks have never really lost that mentality.
You have never adjusted your thinking and laws, and now you are providing a sneak preview of what we are going to face, if the lefties don't wake up over here..WOMEN AND MEN beaten up by the government for not wearing a mask outdoors when ultraviolet rays, and ventillation kills and inhibits the spreading of the virus, in no time flat. That is what the U.S. CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL(CDC) says over here, and the stats prove it.
I do feel sorry for you, though.
Take care..its only going to get worse for you..and us if we do not find a way to get the democrats out of office nationally, and in many states, locally.
But, we do have one last thing on our side.
      Sadly..you folks do not.
I guess you don't miss what you never had.
      NOPE..
You had terrorists just walk right in on one of your big suburban shopping and restaurant complexes, akin to a mall here in the U.S., and just kill and have their way. Simply, if you had guns to defend yourselves with, the odds of that happening would have dropped significantly. In the U.S., where no-guns-allowed areas and businesses do not exist, only a miniscule amount of mass shootings have occurred. On the other hand, 97 percent of all public attacks that resulted into four or more people dying, have occurred in places who call themselves WEAPON OR ARMS OR GUNS FREE ZONES.
The AURORA, COLORADO shooter last decade admitted that he lived closer to a theatre where registered guns were allowed, but drove to a further away gun-free mall, and did his deed without fear of reprisal on the spot from any customers in the movie theatre.
And, its a myth that gun control stops mass shootings and reduces crime.
In NORWAY a heavily gun- controlled country, earlier this century 77 people were shot at a children's resort.
The folks there had no way to defend themselves.
In LAS VEGAS, a town that inhibits gun ownership, a man killed 58 country music concert goers by firing from a hotel window that night four years ago.
The whole incident is suspicious as hell.
Somebody tried to break into his house near RENO that nite, and we have never heard anymore about that.
The manager and owner of the hotel just days before implored its employees to support U.N. gun control proposals when they voted for politicians who agreed with them. That week a man came in with numerous, and big suitcases and no one in the hotel administration and guest services got suspicious?
In CHICAGO, ghetto street gangs fight a war with each other, while the city does not allow gun ownership for its populace. Across the border to the East, Indiana allows gun ownership and they have far less crime.
Chicago crooks purchase guns in Indiana, but so what!
If the honest, law abiding people in CHICAGO could have enhanced self defense abilities, gangs would be inhibited from doing driveby shootings in their neighborhoods.
You would not see folks walking up to other people in downtown Chicago and sucker punching them..
In TEXAS, we have had only one mass shooting in one school, in SANTA FE, TEX..
AND no security officers were at that time allowed to be armed IN THOSE SCHOOLS. Our governor changed that. Our teachers can now be armed.
      Guess what?!
No mass shootings since SANTA FE.
Guns are the last line of defense..
The NAZIS demanded registration, got that, and then confiscated them.
And in AUSTRALIA, crooks sell their crap guns in buybacks, and then make their own, or never turn their good arms over, using the money in the buyback to also buy them off the black market underground.
You are only keeping the law abiding folks from ownership, not the crooks.
Of course, if they have only knives, and you forgot yours at home, you're done, anyway. They certainly don't have to worry about you being armed with a gun.
Finally, you may have been told that over here the Constitution only allows a "well regulated militia" such as the National Guard or our Armies to own guns.
That is true, but REGULATED IN THE 18th. century meant " to make equal". In other words, our populace could be armed because they could become an Army to fight a tyrannical government domestically, or lawbreaking and attacking domestic citizens, or foreign invaders, practically instantly.
Anyone backing them who did not have a firearm, could use one on loan from the state or local militias= to make equal in gun use participation. Further, after any militia defense was over, those who owned guns could keep them to shoot or defend against home intruders, or shoot wild game for food. So, do not believe that private citizens were prevented from keeping and bearing arms once threats were quelled.
The latter is a leftist and government lie..one of many.
Well, good luck to you..you never really had guaranteed freedom for the long run..its very existence for you folks was always conditional, not temporarily so, permanently conditional.
We are headed in the same direction.
History says that gun ownership blockage does not end well.
Ask EUROPEANS who remember their ANCESTORS' HISTORY WITH THE NAZIS and HITLER after.. AFTER registration.
      Think about it!

@@robertsprouse9282 Oh Robert S ....you did seem to read alot into any gaps in my comment. I think when you guys were physically invaded by the british, that is when you equated guns with protection (not saying its wrong) ...but we never had that, maybe that was another reason why we did not have same attitude to arms.
If you look into our history there was a couple of small convict uprisings (Battle at Vinegar Hill probably most famous), plus a few bushrangers.
I never shrugged this serious subject off...for one I tend to keep my comments a bit on the light side because I just find it difficult to discuss things properly via text, makes explaining hard, and so often taken out of context.
In real life I am actually extremely serious (get made fun of alot for being too serious).
Just not sure what the answer is. So you think you guys will win a fight with your government ? (wouldn't it turn into anarchy ?...I am thinking here not knocking you).
I do not want a gun because I am not used to them obviously.
For your info...I do not like my own country anymore (my visit to US was PARTLY to do with that in tandem with a couple of other things). I do not like how the modern western countries have become....drugs, mens and womens contempt for each other, cost of living going up continually, abortions done for any little inconvenience (I am not totally against it) but it has gotten out of hand, peoples general lack of respect for others, declining parenting skills and so on. And of course government treating us all like kindergarden idiots.
Last year got so angry on the train, the voice over said...please do not leave your rubbish, do the right thing and take it with you...I said out loud "I have been brought up properly and I'm not going to be spoken to like an uneducated idiot and you are not my parent ! shutup ! "...of course that was silly it was just a recording, but it made my blood boil, I must have had a bad day....ha ha. I'm sure the other travellers thought I was a nut job.
I was brought up by my elderly english grandmother and taught to do my best to look after myself and try not be too dependent on government and be responsible for myself as much as possible.
I have stood up in a government meeting to protest on my own, when a big wig from Canberra (our political capitol) came to Sydney (I'm pretty sure he may have been a politicians son, and what he did was illegal to do here, I was going to ask who he damn well thought he was...but I was young at the time and did not go that far). He was gabbing on in our meeting room about how we should completely privatise our healthcare and dump our partly subsidised public system because we work for our food so we should all work for our healthcare. I saw red and stood up and said "we work for our food because we are well, but you cannot work for things when you are sick".
I do not like your countries policy on health care.....I think care for sick or injured should be like here - subsidised, at least partly. I think some things should be private and some publicly owned and run, a mixture of both is good for a country in my humble opinion.
So... I believe very strongly to stand up for your beliefs and against unjust laws, even if that means doing things the hard way to do that. I just gotta make sure I think things through, talk to others and make sure I am on the right track before I bulldoze ahead.
But even though I wish here was a good place to discuss this issue more deeply, this is not the best medium for those kinds of discussions.
The last time I lost my temper on here was with a feminazi who thought all women until recent times apparently sat on their fat ars*s waiting to be rescued by the likes of her. I told her off and said what about women who looked after their hubbies when they were in industrial accidents, looked after kids, kept farms running, sometimes all at the same time...all before so called feminism.
Anyway I have started to rave.....just please do not accuse me of taking things lightly. That is so far from my belief to do so. thanks.

This brought me to tears. What a wonderful woman. Who knew what a wonderful person she was? I just subscribed because I think I want to see more of this work that you do. Thank you!

I'm rewatching Bewitched again. Last time was in the mid 90s. This time I'm getting in depth with the people behind the actress / actors. What an extraordinary group of humans that was on this show. Their love and compassion for each other comes through on the screen.

Alice was a wonderful person and so are you for telling her story in such a sweet way. I feel so inadequate as a human being now, but maybe that’s why it was meant for me to click on your story. To make me do better.

Wow, never realized how amazing she was in her craft! As a little girl loved her as a nosy neighbor and missed her when she was gone. No one could take her place, she made me laugh every time. RIP dear wonderful Alice🙏🏻🌹🙏🏻

YES!!! The ecstatic dance she did on the lawn after she thought she made it rain! Then, even more hilarious was her later moaning to the sky with her head back, in the downpour; "STOOOOOOOP RAAAAAAAAIN"! My favorite bewitched moment by far.
