    Guys, please ignore this video. It's clearly made by someone who doesn't know what they are talking about.
    Firstly his RAM is showing 3.8GB rather than 4GB usable because he has a CPU with a built in graphics chip, so that 0.2GB has been assigned there (if it was being used by programs it would still be "usable").
    Secondly, Windows manages how much SWAP RAM you have anyway, what he's advising you do is pointless. This will NOT help performance because if you reach the point where SWAP is being used at all (because all your actual RAM has all been used) your performance will crash through the floor because your hard disk is massively slower than actual proper RAM. You will NOT get more FPS in games, things will not work faster.
    Anyone who thinks they have seen a performance increase from doing this is unfortunately suffering from the placebo effect.

      ***** Actually it wouldn't, it would just waste disk space.

      actually no, it WILL slow down your computer, if you give windows VM it will use it, it tries to always keep some ram free by doing a balancing act. where as if you have no pf (or a small one) it forces windows to use the (much much) faster ram.

    • @Enverex
      @Enverex 10 лет назад +1

      The amount of swap/page you have allocated won't effect how much Windows swaps (unless you have no page file or the page file is tiny and simply isn't usable). For example Windows won't utilise virtual memory more if you have a 4GB page file VS. 2GB.

    This makes no difference, windows already uses all the vram it needs, this is literally a placebo to make people who don't know any better feel slightly better about themselves, honestly, the only effective way to improve a machines memory is to buy more ram or to declutter the startup with msconfig

  • @camgibb59
    @camgibb59 10 лет назад +2

    Thx. Additional consideration for all is : hard drives have arms on multiple discs like the old needle on vinyl records. The less it has to move back and forth, the faster it'll be. Having same max and min size prevents os from constantly changing virtual memory file size. Also known as the. swap file *swp. It will likely be in pieces in different places. Using hd app, defrag and get free space and swap file in one piece at start of drive so arms travel as little as possible.

    • @camgibb59
      @camgibb59 10 лет назад

      The earlier Norton Utilities I think did this. Currently I think Perfectdisk and another I forgot, do this. Yrs ago I saw huge speed up defragging and moving system files to start of drive.

    This does not do much to increase speed. If anything it might slow down your computer as Hard drives and even SSDs are much slower than RAM.
    The best thing to do is to increase your RAM. If you don't have the money of are unable to add more RAM. Use a flash drive with Windows Readyboost, or if you use links, just format it as SWAP space.

      +Ryan Cavitt (Kira) Why? I thought virtual memory was just meant to give you extra RAM? So if you have say 32GB system RAM, and you have 32GB virtual memory, wouldn't this help with programs requiring around 40GB memory?

  • @bgtracker

    Your hard disk is slower than your actual RAM. The computer uses the "virtual ram" when it lacks of actual RAM. I would recommend disabling your page file aka "virtual ram", if you have more than 8GB of RAM.

    Virtual (as in "not physically existing as such but made by software to appear to do so") RAM does NOT speed up your machine. What it does do is allow memory-hungry programs to run under circumstances where you would otherwise run out of memory. However, if your computer needs to use virtual RAM, it runs a lot SLOWER when doing so.
    Google "how does virtual memory work" for more information.

    • @Crimsonfireball
      @Crimsonfireball 8 лет назад +1

      Virtual or not Ram just does not make a computer faster. But If you tend to open more apllication and multi task, it's doesn't hurt to have a virtual ram.

      @TechnoMageB5 8 лет назад +1

      ***** You are correct, but you missed the point. The point was about VIRTUAL RAM, not physical. Adding physical RAM to a system that at least occasionally exceeds its previous RAM limit will always boost that PCs performance.

      +TechnoMageB5 hello mister..i using research educational software and do numerical running simulation that base on "HOW BIG the RAM " on PC was..
      i do it on 2 notebook with different OS and do it together..something strange happen, when i do in notebook with win10 64 OS, the memory on task manager use nearly maximum (3.4 GB which maximum 3,8 from actual 4GB installed
      next, the notebook with win7 64 only show 1,9GB RAM used from 3,8 avail from 4GB actual installed..and the runnin also longer..
      both of them base on core i5 an only do 35% CPU process..yes, the simulation never care about core available on your PC, only available of RAM (or the RAM could use) will make sense..the result, win10 do faster with less than 50 hour running, and win7 less than 80 hour running..
      any suggest??

    • @TechnoMageB5
      @TechnoMageB5 8 лет назад

      Nugroho Ifadianto That's odd. Sounds like your notebook is allocating some physical RAM as shared video RAM automatically (instead of having a dedicated video card with its own VRAM), and (this latter part is a guess) may be self-adjusting the allocation based on OS management. You'll need to research your model on how that is set up and if BIOS settings allow you to control that (the Probook notebooks we have at work do NOT let us).

  • @earthling1984

    Vitural ram is very slow unless you are using an SSD hard drive or some other drive that can run virtual ram. A fast SD drive or external SSD may be ok. But, never use a normal disk hard drive for virtual ram. In the past I actually turned off virtual ram on computers that only had normal HDDs.

    • @Nickgowans
      @Nickgowans 7 лет назад

      You can use pagefiling (virtual ram) on a HDD but as you say, it won't improve performance since the data is coming from the HDD in the first place and HDDs are really shit slow, secondly if you're using an SSD you want to avoid pagefiling, because SSDs only have a limited number of read write cycles before they degrade, Pagefiling on a drive would go through these read write cycles several times faster than normal use.

    Using virtual ram does not necessarily increase performance, it create a page file on the HDD, most modern computer for the average person has 4gb of ram. By disabling the virtual ram/page file, it will increase speed of the machine and also between application because you force the applications and environment to run fully from memory, and not partialy on the HDD. The HDD is slower to access data than ram. you should only increase page file size or decrease or disable at your own discretion.

      just buy RAM its cheap and faster. if you want to do this - then it would be better if you use an SSD. vista had a system called superfetch which used memory sticks / cards etc to speed up system but again its a waste of time. use RAID 0 with 2 hard drives or ssd's and buy RAM.

  • @InnardOrchard

    before doing this and expecting big increases, I would first recommend optimizing the pc for performance. i.e turning off all the visual appearance effects. Then go into services.msc and shutting off unneeded services. msconfig and turn off all the programs that start with windows. As for optimizing the pc for audio/video production, they usually recommend doing all those things plus "getting rid of the paging file all together" along with low space disk checks and other background checks. I see a lot of people do tutorials and blame the screen recorder for slow performance when their pc isn't even optimized.

    It really depends on how you are using your computer. there is no right or wrong amount. I personally am a power user and gamer and have one pc with 24gb another with 16gb and a laptop with 8gb. To find out how much ram you use regularly open your "task manager" and in will show you your ram utilization. Most people think keeping it below 60-75% on normal basis is good for pc health.

    its not actually true, instead you are using the HDD (hard disk drive) which is further than RAM in the tower and that slows it down more especially if you have a older HDD. Programs always slow down when using the HDD, just think, you are always wrighting the files to your HDD which in return is slowing down the HDD.( Loading times will be much longer)
    The best way and allways will be is to upgrade your PHYSICAL RAM (ive found it as cheap as £40 for an extra 4GB of it.)

RAM Speeds are up to 25.6GB per second. HDD's are up to 550MB/sec for SSD and 150MB/sec for HDD.

    This will not make your computer faster. Upgrading RAM doesn't make your computer faster either. The only time upgrading RAM would really help the average user is if they had under 4GB of RAM. Also upgrading the speed of RAM in no way will help the average person and even for pc gamers the difference between 800MHZ RAM and 2133 ram is 1-2 FPS.

    • @bluack123
      @bluack123 10 лет назад

      If you changed that 4GB to 8GB you would be correct, if you're a PC gamer at least. 8 is the new 4, almost all games requires more than 4 these days and no game requires over 8, Watch Dogs, you wont even be able to launch the game with 4 GB of ram when it's released. And currently, 4GB of ram for battlefield 4 isn't enough, you get constant stuttering with anything less than 6.

      bluack123 Yeah but he is making it seem like the more RAM you have the faster your computer is which is bull crap. For the average user more ram then 4 GB is useless and a waste of money. I am a PC gamer and I do a lot of 3D art so I need at least 8 GB of RAM.

    Wait, so what were to happen if you _did_ decide to add more virtual ram than the recommend (1.5x) amount? If you were to add like 2.5x or even 3x more ram, what would be the consequence, would your computer just start running slower even? Or would it still work?

    it seems like using your hdd as ram would use up a lot of read/write cycles on it, causing it to have a shorter lifespan. maybe this would be good if you had an old drive laying around to use solely for this purpose it would be good, but I would guess that if you have parts around like that you probably don't have much need to upgrade ram on the cheap anyways.

    You may be tinkering with Virtual Memory. But hearing you. It seems you have absolutely no clue how this works. Keep it at de recommended setting "Let windows manage" for optimum performance. Extending Virtual RAM (paging) actually worsens performance.
    Actually you didn't assign 5839MB but 8911MB (as your pagefile extends over two drives which is actually one drive partitioned into two, therefore increasing seek times unnecessary)
    Best performance?
    Disable Page file op Drive D:\
    Enable "Let windows manage"
    Done.

  • @uokka123

    I haven't read all the comments (obviously) but I must say it's not as easy as "right" or "wrong".
    In case a computers RAM is completely used by some very heavy memory hungry process, it can actually help to have a big swap file so the computer doesn't (seem to) freeze while performing this task. However, if the RAM is not totally used, the OS (at least Windows) still uses the swap / page file to a certain amount (like 25%?) in order to be prepared for such an occurrence and to have more RAM available for potentially newly created processes. This is what slows things down - bad for gaming indeed. Lots of disk I/O and the HDD or SSD gets weared out more quickly. Completely disabling the swap may cause trouble if the OS crashes and tries to write a dump file - it needs a swap file for that (for some reason). At least a small swap is advisable. A big swap might be useful depending on what is done on the machine. If more RAM is too expensive or the main boards limit is reached that is.
    BTW, there is no such thing as virtual RAM. It's virtual memory. RAM stands for Random Access Memory (or Random Allocation Memory). The "Randomness" is what makes RAM fast. Not that it works randomly, but it's not depending on a mechanical head or a complex file system - just plain addresses that have been declared 'randomly' when they were available.

    You should tell these viewers about disk thrashing since you are advising against actually fixing their insufficient ram capacity and using virtual memory. For those of you using this tip, virtual memory is to stop your computer from crashing when you max out your available ram and to write files to something non volatile when windows shuts down due to errors (ram gets cleared when the pc is shut down). The only real solutions are to upgrade your ram or slim down your running processes.

    How this works is by using Virtual Paging. which means when your RAM gets full. your system will store the data in your hard disk instead of the RAM. this does help a bit but keep in mind that your hard disk is slower than your RAM like if your RAM can type 100 words per minutes, your harddisk can only write 5. so your high-end game might still work but you will experience some lag(because low hard disk speed) now if you have an SSD(solid state drive) which is basically a hard drive that works digitally without any mechanical parts it will perform much better. but still. nothing is as fast as your RAM. however this method is useful if you're trying to run a software which consumes alot of RAM and like Android Studio. the lag wont be noticeable and still you can run the software without limitations

    for performance it is not important how much virtual RAM you have, it is important that the minimum and maximum pagefile size are the same, so that Windows will not resize (ad possible fragment) the pagefile.
    If you run out of virtual memory, your system gets not slower, but it gets unstable: applications and possibly even Windows itself will crash. It might appear to run slower, but in this case you actually have a crashed application or service that is stopped or restarted by Windows and your system is not slower, but it actually hangs completely before Windows treats the application or service. You usually will know the reason because you will get out of memory messages.
    If you have so much RAM that it never runs out , you can actually disable the pagefile. For this 64Gb should be enough for almost everyone, for most people 16GB would be enough for this.

    Dude you are supposed to do it in 2 different hard disks, not in 2 different partitions on the same drive.
    Moving virtual memory to a secondary storage harddrive, and removing it on the system drive speeds up performance cause the system hardisk's head doesnt have to go back and forth reading both files and pagefile one at the time.
    Moving pagefile to a secondary hardisk allows the first drive to read files smoothly while the other reads pagefile at the same time.
    Also adding pagefile to many fast usb flash drives, especially if you have an older pc with low ram helps.
    This usb thing helps only on old PCs with low specs, and only if more than one flash drive is used.
    If not buy a hybrid SSHD drive for laptops, they are not expensive and are much much faster than normal HDDs. They are really an affordable game changer.

  • @unrealeck
    @unrealeck 10 лет назад

    This is really for older computers. Hard drives are incredibly slow compared to main memory. This won't benefit you if you have a fair amount of memory and of a decent speed.
    Hard drives are typically the slowest component in a computer beside the optical media drive.

    Depends on the computer, most gaming laptops have a max of 16gb or 32gb RAM(for the really expensive ones)Now that's what they allow without voiding the warranty.(Doesn't always mean you can't put more)But for most uses over 16gb Ram is overkill. Plus I believe you need the Windows 7 Ultimate or Professional to actually use all 16gb of ram,because premium will recognize it but not use it all.For example it will say something like 16gb ram ,12gb available for use.At least that's what I've heard.

    The amount of RAM does affect the speed of your computer as long as you have it tuned properly. If you have a cluttered OS with numerous programs running memory resident, then it wont matter, since your computer for the most part will just eat up whatever extra RAM you put in. The key is to optimize your system for the best performance possible, so that RAM you install will make a sizable difference.
    RAM always has, and still is, (one of the) the most cost-effective upgrades you can install, as long as its upgraded properly. Many people say its not, because they dont actually notice it booting faster, or loading certain programs faster. If you run a real hardware benchmark program before and after the RAM upgrade, you will notice it especially will boost the speed when using a RAM intensive program, or game. The key is to use the fastest RAM possible for your current setup, taking into account the CPU and the bus speed. Windows 7 benchmark feature is on the primitive side, but it does at leave give you a baseline to work with. Upgrading the amount of RAM usually wont improve the RAM score even if it helps your OS out. Installing faster RAM will...
    As far as this video goes.. Just changing virtual memory settings will not do much of anything. If its done in conjunction with other forms of optimization, it will help a bit, but its not noticeable.
    I often see people beefing up their virtual RAM on a cluttered OS with an older hard drive with less then ideal space available, and that will actually slow down your computer, and that WILL be noticeable.
    Also if you have motherboard with built-in video, do yourself a favor and pick up a video card. You dont need to be a gamer to realize the nice boost it can give you. You will be able to run your video without borrowing resources from your system such as RAM for the video memory, and it will allow more power from your CPU to be dedicated to the OS.

    RAM and virtual memory are two quite different things.
    RAM: Takes memory from your RAM unit. Faster and more efficient. Doesn't take up memory from HDD. If you want more you have to buy more though.
    Virtual memory: Takes memory from your HDD. Slower and less safe than RAM (e.g running sims 2 purely on Virtual memory will be sluggish and causes glitches). Takes memory from your HDD. No big performance difference between having two times more virtual memory than RAM vs having 20 times more than RAM. So if you have 8 GB ram, 16 GB virtual memory is enough, more wont make any difference.

  • @cylo5770
    @cylo5770 8 лет назад

    Virtual memory won't make your system faster. Optimum configuration is to have 3 partitions (or more), first is for pagefile (this is virtual memory for) and you make it like 1,5x of your physical ram, second is for OS and third for all data. Why to have pagefile partition first? Because it's on outer side where disk has bigger R/W speed and lower access times. Next, use some quality disk utility and test your disk up to which size it has best speeds and low access time, and do the partition up to this size, and use rest for data. For example, I've a 750GB WD black 7200rpm, and I've 24GB for my pagefile and my disk is fast up to 204-208GB, so I've created partition for my system in size of 180GB, so the pagefile and system are on most outer side of disk and it runs really really fast. Also I have i7 3840QM and 16GB of ram in my laptop, but the difference is pretty significant when I was testing 500GB 5400rpm drive, even if you partition it correctly, the difference is visible. Additionally, you've to set your pagefile to do a small memory dump onto your system partition, and set "Virtual memory" size on your partition to 401kb (small dump needs 400kb), and on partition meant to pagefile to the size of your partition minus 5MB. I assigned my pagefile partition a P: letter, and also you have to set all other that small kernel dump options to dump onto that partition.
