I love all of your mechanic videos and they all make perfect sense...when I seen other videos where they removed the front bumper etc. from the mini Cooper I knew you would show the correct way of the alternator removal..keep up the good work you are good....
To anyone willing to follow the steps shown in the video: it absolutely works. I just changed the alternator on a 2001 mini r50 and all I had to remove was a coolant hose ( one clamp ) and a plastic thingy which I have no ideea what it is ( very easy to remove ). Thank you Robert for posting this video.
I'm a shade tree mechanic myself. I like the way you give you thought process behind what you're doing. It takes you 5X as long but if I was a newbie I'd be able to follow you without a lot of pausing and rewinding. Subscribed and rewinded. Best of luck with the channel my friend.
Great video, I started on the guidance you gave but found an easier way, jack the front of the car up, remove top coolant pipe, get a jack and a piece of wood around 12 inches long, place one end of the wood under the tensioner, the other end on the jack, lift slightly to release pressure on the tensioner, belt will slip off, undo bolts on the alternator, the bottom bolt can be done from underneath the car and is a lot easier than trying from the top, no need to remove the end cover and regulator, if you get the angle right, the alternator lifts right out, the whole thing came out in 25 mins of starting the job.
Thanks for the video. I have a 2003 Mini R50 and I had the battery light come on intermittently recently. The battery was only 2 years old so I figured it wasn't that, but took it to the parts store and had them charge and test it just for good measure. IA few days later, I lost all power on the highway while driving to work. It started with the clock, then windows wouldn't roll down, headlights, tail lights went out, car started sputtering real bad and almost stalling at stop signs... anyway I wanted to post here because over the last 6 months I started noticing many little things going wonky with my car. The one major thing I'd been trying to troubleshoot without success was a rough idle issue and sputter when accelerating away from a complete stop and an extremely rough idle when running the A/C. These and other issues have all gone away since replacing the alternator, the car runs great now! I noticed my sunroof was opening much slower for almost a month before any other bad alternator signs presented themselves. So basically I wanted let people know that if you're wondering about these other issues (rough idle in particular and A/C causing engine sputter, windows/sunroof moving slower than normal...) don't overlook the possibility that its related to a weakening alternator. You might want to just test the alternator for proper voltage output while the engine is running with a simple multi-meter. My alternator did finally take a dump 100%, but the signs were there for many months before that it wasn't putting out enough amps to properly recharge my battery, power my coil... long before the actual battery light came on. One other thing to make sure of is that you check for the proper amp output on your alternator BEFORE buying the alternator, because there are 3 options for Mini's 105, 110 and 120 AMPS. My 2003 R50 has power windows, locks, sunroof and A/C and needed the 120AMP unit.
Your method is so much simpler than the service manual or any other guide. My method was take off right hand wheel and arch liner, take off bumper and carrier, move radiator (almost) into service position, take off serpentine belt then undo alternator and twist/wiggle/turn/squeeze it out. You can get it out this way without draining the radiator or removing hoses to save some mess. I can confirm its pretty easy since beyond changing a tyre this was my first DIY job ever.
Thanks for the video it saved me a lot of time on my daughters 2004 base model alternator replacement. I was lucky enough to get the alternator (Valeo) out and the new one in without taking them apart.
Great video, just did the alternator in my sisters '04 Mini tonight. I have been turning wrenches in old Chevys, Cummins for several years now & grew up in the shoo/ out in the field. I wasn't looking forward to doing this replacement but your video was very helpful with taking the back cover off to get it out!! Thank you very much Robert.
Great Job..I have a 2004 cooper with 20200 miles on it and the alternator just went a day after I changed the a-arm bushing. This video helped. I like to know what Im getting myself into ahead of time. Thanks for your time.
tips: if you dont have proper serpentine belt tensioner for the mini, I used channel locks. To loosen third bottom 10mm bolt, tie a lanyard around wrench and pull up, remember to have closed end on bolt, it saves trying to break torque with fingers and to catch if it slips, if you still have skid plate on bottom still attached. You might also need a 13mm socket to remove ground to alternator and 7mm socket for cover. You can take off old alternator regulator to pull out easier, but on the new one, do not take off, just take off cover when putting the new alternator in. This diy was very helpful thank you.
I just did this on an o7 mini. It was easier than I thought. Remove the plastic bumber(4 screws), then remove the metal bumber(4 nuts and 2 screws). This gives you plenty of room to get the alternator out of the car without taking it apart! It took less than a half an hour.
absolute beauty u are sir, used ur method to change my fan belt without needing a special mini fan belt tool. one thing I did different was to use a small ratchet but use my vacum cleaners rod behind the ratchet used it as pry bar worked brilliantly.
How did you squeeze your 3/8 ratchet into the space where the tensioner is at? I can't seem to get it in there due to how narrow it is to the left of the pulleys.
Hmmmm, That was past yesterday, I don't remember. Maybe I used the boxed end wrench to break it loose, then the 1/4" to take it the rest of the way out. I do have smaller hands and arms.
Great video. I will use it today on my 04 base. The mini cooper in the video looks like my base model. not an S model. The S has a turbo up on top which will block access to the alternator from above.
Thanks a lot. I used your method, but instead of using the ratchet to pry up the belt tensioner, I used a monkey wrench and pryed it up until the point I extended it with a visegrip (which is a pliers that locks). The other thing I did to get some more space was to remove the engine mount so that I can push the tensioner to the point without having to use any special tool.
Oh man, I just replaced one in a 2005 base model. I could not get to the lower mount bolt without moving the radiator module forward. However, instead of the specified 110 amp Bosch, mine had the non-standard 120 amp French-made Valeo alternator which is slightly larger all around.
I changed the battery recently. Well, Napa store said it was bad. But the same thing is happening. The car power goes out, first the ABS, and power steering. Is it the alternator?
Joel The same thing happened to me just now. Had to leave my car at work and scooch a lift! What did you find out when you got to the bottom of it? Mine starts but the battery light is still on and power steering is Kaput!

I did not change my replace my alternator though. I changed the brushes. Did not have to change the voltage regulator.I ran into a problem after I put back the alternator. The dash display for transmission was not working, the temp gauge was reading high, the ac did not work, and the temp on the tacometer did not work, and the fans did not work. Turns out that there was a live wire that runs under the battery to somewhere in the vicinity the power steering pump that was grounding off on the transmission. (I was hearing a humming sound so I checked there). I read somewhere that if the charge is not enough, the power steering is affected and all these other things. But I think the reverse happened with the grounding of this wire. ( My battery box is broken on the side of the transmission, so it is just resting there).
micah grant how did you fix it ?? This is happening with my 01 now :( so sad. Ive had her four months and already replaced the radiator air filters ht cables and spark plugs!
I did my wifes and couldnt get a ratchet in there either. The gap to the frame just wasnt big enough. Even a mechanic mate couldnt do it. Had to buy the belt tensioner tool in the end but its much cheaper to buy one from the US and pay the postage. I think mine was £40 including postage. I forget where from though.
@@RobertDIY the video skips over taking the lower alt bolt out. between 5:23 & 5:24.
