    The dealer quoted me $2424 to replace the alternator. I purchased a new one and installed it with the help of your great directions. Of course that didn’t fix the charging problem. The battery is grounded to the body of the car, not the engine. There is a ground strap that connects the engine to the body on the left side. The connection at the engine oxidizes making it resistive. I cleaned both sides of the ground strap connections. After ohm’ing out everything to make sure it has a good connection, everything started working properly. Literally, a 35 cent star washer fixed the problem. Hopefully, this will help someone.

      Hey there Sir …
      I have an 08 hatchback …
      I just put a new alternator on and it seems that the battery isn’t charging still ..
      I’m gonna look for this ground location You mentioned..
      Could You please kinda explain where it’s at in a bit more detail if Possible…
      ( if You even see this ) thanks

    • @carlkoeppl
      @carlkoeppl 4 месяца назад +1

      The body of the car should be grounded to the engine. On the left side of the engine is braided strap. With an ohm meter test that the body and the engine are near 0 ohms. You will have to scratch off the oxidation on the aluminum block to get a good reading. The engine may also turn over slowly, since the starter current also goes through that ground strap. Good luck.

    This is a great video that removes some of the mystery of digging into the MINI R56. The provided video show several initial steps needed if the AC condenser needs replacing or the an engine swap is needed.
    I replaced my alternator (2010 MCS Clubman, N15, R55; identical to the R56 front) by removing minimal pieces from the top side: negative battery cable (

    Thanks for the video. One comment for everyone. If you take off the top heat shield, O2 sensor, oil dip stick you can pull the alternator right out the top rather than taking off the whole front end of the car. Just remove the top brace and pops right out!

    Thanks to this excellent video i did it for a friend last weekend, it did take me just over a day and some lost blood but it all worked out ok! I raised it up on axle stands which helped. The "cord" that you pull to release the belt had me vexed but watching another short video on it made it a tad clearer. Good luck if you have fingers like sausages!

    Thank you for the video, helped me successfully swap my alternator. I did not take apart the sub-frame and was able to sneak the alternator out without doing this.. there is another video floating around that goes slightly into detail on this.
    Your trick on getting the bottom bolt of the alternator out was crucial otherwise idk how i would have got it out. The wrench you used to accomplish this was still slightly too long for me.. and i had to cut about 1-2 inches off the wrench with a dremel tool to make it work.
    thanks!

    Excellent video. Thanks. I just did this today on a 2008 mini Cooper S turbo.
    Man this engine is a pain to to work on. Changed the alternator, water pump, thermostat, battery, and oil change.
    I also changed the coolant hoses over to mishimoto silicone coolant hoses. That was an even bigger pain as they were just slightly larger than the OEM and the pinch clamps really did not want to fit, even with wd40. I would advise against the mishimoto. I even had to cut some of them down as they were too long.

    My mini cooper D r56 is entirely different from your engine bay. I disconnected the hose from the turbo on the drivers side (UK right-hand drive) & got my ratched down in to the space to loosen & remove the 2 top bolts. Got 2 bolts on bottom loosened & remove by jacking car up & sliding underneath it. Didn't have to take the front end off in anyway, like you seem to have had to do. Hey great video... On your Mod Mini tools link , the improved 2557-20 3/8 link is not working. Is it overkill because I am about to order the 2457-20 3/8 ratchet instead. Thanks again for you videos.

    Hi Mod MINI, thanks for the great video. Have changed the alternator, belt and duff battery on my 2010 Cooper S but have a question re the Water Pump Friction Drive Wheel. I noticed when everything was all connected back up on my car that the drive wheel kept dropping and disengaging the pulley from the drive wheel when running.
    My question is: Is that a normal function of Minis? i.e. As there is an electrical connection on the top of the friction drive wheel assembly, is the puller supposed to engage and disengage by itself?

      Well if the engine is cold it drop and when it gets hot it retract and turn the water pump pulley

    This is well done just have one area of confusion that I hope you will clear up. The 12.8 Mil socket ( I'm not familiar with this size ??) used to used to remove the bottom bolt on the alternater ( frames times 7:40 to 8:08). Where is this socket in your parts list? I want to be sure I have this before beginning, Can you tell me where this is ordered on Amazon or is located in the parts lists. Thanks very much for the video, I wish others were as concise in their videos as you were in yours.

    Help! I can't budge the E10 reverse torx bolt blocked by the AC line with an 8mm wrench. Just can't get enough pressure on it. Gave up to avoid stripping it. Any suggestions? Hopefully others have ran into this. If I have to move the AC line how do I do that? Thanks!!

      I used the wrench that he used but i had to cut about 1-2 inches off the wrench with a dremel tool to make room for leverage.

    Thanks for the great guide! Trying to follow along with this for my '12 R60, which is unfortunately a little different.
    Hopefully someone more familiar with the R60 can help. At 5:12 you point out 3 13mm bolts holding the modular front end to the frame. I have 2 16mm nuts on the top, both left and right side, which were easily dealt with. I've removed all other bolts as shown in the video, what I can't figure out is how many more I need to remove to get it to slide.
    At 5:15 you point out the two lower bolts, on the R60 those are mounted facing inwards, only (barely?) accessible from behind where you are pointing. Do those need to go?

    • @animoshho

      on an r60 there is a third nut on each side only accessible from behind.

    Question Regarding the service mode bolts . Would you need the service mode bolts for the front end modular service mode to remove it? Or can you get enough clearance to get the alternator out with the frame hanging on ? (I don’t have the bolts and need to change the alternator ) thank you :-)

    • @ModMINI
      @ModMINI  5 лет назад

      The bolts are to hang the front end so you don't damage anything or have to drain coolant. It's too heavy to hang on its own. You can support from underneath somehow maybe.

    • @ModMINI

      Find an M8 nut on the car somewhere and try to thread it. It's possible that it's a 1.5 if I measured incorrectly but I think it's 1.25.

    I have 2003 mini cooperS. The battery light came on, power steering stopped working. I checked the alternator there is 14 volts. I checked 100amp fuse under the fuse box, there is continuity. I checked wires surrounding power steering pump, everything seemed to be normal. I exchanged a used power steering pump (not sure if good or not). Now I’m wondering if there are any other diagnostic tests that I should do? I checked the fuses inside the car as well. Please reply as soon as possible. Thanks, Max

      this video is for alternator for gen 2 MINI. If not an alternator, suspect battery problem. If you are talking about a gen 1 mini with power steering pump, check for voltage at pump, if present, you have a bad pump.

    • @maxprosper6444
      @maxprosper6444 5 лет назад

      If the pump has an issue will it give me a battery light? Because I have 14 volt at the alternator. I checked the two big red wires, I have battery power. I checked two small wires on the pump, one has battery voltage, and the other when I start the car has 14volts, and I think the 3rd one is a signal. Please let me know if this pump can give me a battery light on?

      @@ModMINI did it yesterday, I kñow I don't need to remove alternator, I was just concerned about limited room for any kind of a tool to release the tensioner. I've ended up using block of wood & pushing from the bottom up on the pulley while my mate pressed the locking pin in from the top. Easy peasy and no stupid money tool required !
