    Without sounding like a "hippie" or conspiracy theorist, i think in todays world a minimalist lifestyle is key to stay free in a world where we have become slaves to the materialistic lifestyle. Its interesting as the more i understand and practice my faith sikhi (sikhism) i find the religion is more so a way of life which does heavily implement and go deeper into implementing a minimalist lifestyle.

      Kings93 We live in a consumer world. I definitely have had to start thinking about what I need vs what I want. There's things I want still of course but I want nice, quality, things. I think everything today is just too disposable.

    • @jeffreybuoncristiano
      @jeffreybuoncristiano  7 лет назад +7

      +Dom M having nice things is ok. As long as it's in line with what you personally feel is essential. I love camera gear. I don't need it but it is essential for me. Having a lot of clothes is not essential and I don't care for fashion.

    • @93Dholi
      @93Dholi 7 лет назад +1

      Dom M yh i agree. i think it comes down to the essentials vs the needs or wants. But the only thing is i feel that society dictates what we want and need. So instead of acquiring something you want, we end up acquiring things that other people say is essential. Trouble is there are so many people who say so many things are necessary that we end up acquiring everything but the one thing we actually needed.

    MY Minimalism is defined as the intentional promotion of the things l value and the removal of anything that distract me from those things😄 love that saying.

    I like your style - very natural, not too many cuts or edits and natural speaking pattern is very warm. Also some good points in this video, like only having 3 items on any surface - good idea. It made me chuckle a bit that your first recommendation for the minimalist lifestyle was to buy two more books, but this is because my biggest struggle as someone who is interested in minimalism is having too many books, and my second biggest struggle is reading about things and thinking that means I have done them (like reading lots about meditation but not being very disciplined in meditating).
    Minimising has been a great energy to me over the past few weeks and hopefully it'll be a new lifestyle which gives me much more headspace than my previous mode of starting a million projects and never finishing any.

    Love this tips video! I just did an overhaul of my room after I moved out of my parents house and had to take every single item I owned out. So I’ve been cluttered for the past two years... but last week I just got rid of three trash bags of clothes, and two bags of junk/trash. More to go, but I’m ver happy with the progress!!

    We've (family of 4 and two cats) downsized from a house to an Rv and than from an RV to what can fit in our Outback. We did it to have the opportunity to show our kids the world. I can't even remember most of the stuff we got rid of. Shows how much we truly needed it.

    I like the deep thinking in this video like
    "If you are not using it, you don't need it. It's actually weighing
    down on your consciousness, and your stress levels, and your visual
    stimulus"
    We don't often think about the wear and tear we do to our cognitive senses in our day to day life. Minimalism helps me to minimize the cognitive stresses in my life! This minimization allows me to allocate my cognitive energy toward the day's most important tasks.

    Great video. Thank you for your words. I am on a path that is leading me to adopt minimalism. I buy things I don’t need, expensive things, and many many things that are not too expensive, but add up(Thanks Amazon). I buy all these things because I want a variety of things because I feel more choices will lead me to be more happy. After many many years of living this lifestyle, nothing has changed. So I’m at that point where something has to change. I’ve always been interested in the “Less is More l” idea. And I’ve always loved the way a minimalists home looks. I adore bare things. I think I will be adopting minimalism. Thank you for answering so many question I had, and some I didn’t even have that I would have encountered eventually. Great video.

    I can actually move all my possessions in my Jeep Compass. In my 20's, it took the biggest U-Haul. The thing I really enjoy is that occasionally I can splurge on one material item. The latest was a pair of Merrell hiking boots. That seems to be my way of channeling all the impulses I ignore. A gift for keeping it simple. Great video.

    This video came at a great time for me. I started to look into minimalism after watching a short documentary on the movement. After watching this video a few days ago I got Goodbye things and Audible and I just finished it moments ago. It was a great listen and I wanted to thank you for suggesting it. I'm in a weird place right now and going through a lot of changes. (new job, recently single + changing home) Getting rid of shit might be what I need.

    On the topic of why I want to become a minimalist: I lived in a 5 bedroom house most of my life. It was technically a 3 bedroom house with a den and garage that were re-purposed as bedrooms. My family got foreclosed on and I had to live in a small apartment. I liked it better. Less to vacuum. Less to sweep and mop. Less space to put useless junk. I've seen bigger houses from others where every inch of every horizontal surface had a coaster, plant, nick knack, or holder of some kind. I think about how much maintenance that must be. Having to water the plants, dust the nick knacks, and wipe fingerprints off of any vases or glasses. I cannot stand the thought of needing a maid or housekeeper just to keep my house in check otherwise have my house take up several hours of my life when I get around to organizing it, cleaning it, or preparing to have guests over. When I compare the difference, I find I like having less stuff than having more stuff.

    In my younger days I used to be more of a minimalist. I do not think I was not any happier then because of it. But it is nice to have things more streamlined. I have more things now, but try to keep things organized and discern when to throw things away.

      David Ramírez sounds to me like you're still a minimalist (with more things than before). if you're still getting rid of things that's a good sign you're really only keeping around things you're actually using. even if it's more things than before.

    The why is, IMHO the most important bit. You can start decluttering and get rid of all/most of your stuff, and sit in an empty room or rot your mind in front of the TV or RUclips or something, but then you've just made life worse. Minimalism isn't an end in itself. If you go in with no greater purpose than "being a minimalist" its entirely possible for it to destroy your life and make you miserable.

    Hey Jeff, been going through a lot of content since I discovered your channel. Enjoying a lot of it. Off topic question though, your beard looks much more redish here than other videos, where it looks darker. Do you dye it at all? If so maybe you could do a video on that, I have a redish beard but like that darker look, and am curious as to how you went from redish here to darker looking in other videos. (Or unless maybe it's just lighting idk)

    I cleaned my entire basement with the goal of “minimizing” and while I did get rid of a lot...there is still so much I just couldn’t get rid of...even though I wanted to. I’ve been trying to minimize under my bathroom sink and have thrown stuff away at least 3 times now..and yet it is still full of stuff. I’m starting to get frustrated with the whole process. I’m going to read the books you suggested. Do you want to come to my house and help me?

    What are some of the ways to dispose of one’s old stuff without being wasteful?

  • @rtothes936
    @rtothes936 6 лет назад +48

    How to start a minimalist lifestyle.
    #1 Get rid of all your stuff.
    #2 STOP thinking about your old stuff. #3 DO NOT replace your old stuff.
    #4 recite Fight Club phrases often, "The things you own, end up owning you," and "It's only after we lose everything, that we're free to do anything."
    #5 Eat foods that you can pronounce and only eat 1/2 of what you think isn't enough.
    *Extreme minimalists do not even own toothbrush, this is not recommended if you choose to associate with others.
    #6 Under no circumstances should you ever cut,shave, or trim your hair. Washing thyself is acceptable and favored by others.
    #7 DO NOT look at non-minimalist people with envy or jealousy because they haven't been unplugged, yet.
    *This is difficult at first, however you will appreciate your choice in the long run.
    #8 Seek a mate that is less attractive then yourself, they will try harder to please you and others will stay clear of your work in progress type.
    #9 Remind others that you are without certain comforts to achieve a greater sense of self.
    #10 Clear your schedule of anything that requires arriving at a certain place at or around a certain time, then discard said schedule and move on to something less productive, like a empty room without any doors or windows.
    #11 If you've made it through the essential tutorial on how to have less than nothing, you have only made it halfway.
    #12 Continue with a remorsefulnessles way of looking at the world around you.

    I am in no way a minimalist, but I greatly respect their lifestyle. I enjoy having a decluttered world, whether that be decluttered physically or decluttered mentally. Mentally I am so-so at, but physically I'm not so great. I'm a big fan of movies, and I have a massive movie collection that I cannot see myself getting rid of, ever. Same goes for music. CD's, Vinyl's, I have them both and love them both. I am a comic nerd so I have my collection of comics. I have books, I have collectables. I have an attachment to these things that I cannot and will not let go of.
    But, like I said, I love the minimalist lifestyle. All of my clothes fit in my closet, and I was able to clean out my bedroom, getting rid of nearly 10 trash bags...ONE ROOM with that much junk I no longer needed. And I haven't even finished it, and I've been at it for nearly 3 or 4 weeks. I love being organized, which I know does not mean minimalist, but I feel personally it contributes. Being organized helps keep my mind at ease, it helps me focus on what's important and nothing else. Minimalism, in that sense, is an important part of my lifestyle. I love being decluttered, but I also love my items. And that's where I find this odd line drawn between myself and what minimalism stands for. So I guess I'm half minimal? I'm not sure, but I am okay with whatever it is.
    My attachments do not define me, my personality does. But the attachments I do keep are only those which bring me happiness.

    You should do a tour of your place and talk about what you did to each room to minimize it. Kitchens can be the hardest because we're led to believe that we need all these gadgets.

      +Sebastian Lloyd I would but I have roommates and they ruin everything, so it's an awfully gross and dumb kitchen bathroom. MY section I still have one room I can tour, but the shared rooms I won't.

    What is your opinion on living space?
    Does it require to be smaller or simply cleared of non-essential things?

    • @jeffreybuoncristiano
      @jeffreybuoncristiano  7 лет назад +2

      +Frédéric G. Létourneau space is nice. The downside is ppl tend to fill space. If one can not fill it with things then a healthy amount is good. Not having things is key. Not having things that are unessential or extra. If you love something then keep it, it is essential. But there won't be many things like that.

    I have tools, hopefully some of them I don't have to use at all in a year!
    Can't we keep things because they get used rarely?

      Choose your shoes wisely and you might find that the number of pairs you need shrinks over time. One way to identify wisely-chosen shoes: You can get them repaired when they wear; they need not be replaced.

    I know it might be the fokuses of the books you mentioned, but can you do a video on how to throw stuff away? for instance I have an old ps2 with games, and I love playing that thing, but I really havn't been playing it for like 2 years. I don't even have a tv or screen it would be copatible with.. and I don't plan on buying one either.. but I still cannot bring myself to get rid of it.. I do realize, The chances of me actually using it will get slimmer and slimmer. Frankly it's just plain stupid to keep holding on to it. haalp

      +Nuggetheadification well, for this, all your answers are specifically in Mari Kondo's book, which is why I mentioned it. I did not mention these books lightly. By the time you finish the book you will have gotten rid of it with no emotional qualms.

    I cringe at the "style" part of lifestyle. Find out who you are. Most people find this out after they let go of vanity. If you care what others think of you, what your relatives, co-workers or neighbors think of you, you are not ready to answer that question. Then regardless of what you find about yourself, that's you. Then all your life will be easier and guided. Find out who you are first. Minimalist or consumer, you won't be happy until you find out. Rules schmules.

    Minimalism (n.)-the art of getting rid of the physical in order to have a lighter emotional experience.
    The science part comes in when you talk about that whole "three things" on a surface. I read that 3-4 items or elements are really the maximum that a person can process at any one time. Beyond that number, a person's perception has to keep shifting to mentally process.
    I have met some people who claim minimalist living and in their homes they have a strong sense of style. On the other hand, I have also been in homes of people who claim the same thing, but it just looks like they have no stuff.

    Nice man but I've a two year old and it's like a bomb in every room. Plus my minimalistic way gets me into trouble - I threw stuff away I needed later months or years even. The amount of times I said to myself "I needed that now." and then regretting it. Now my thoughts on life is that it's like flying a kite in a hurricane. If you keep it flying with that around you, there can be some solace in that.
    Nice video and seeing the beard style again it really suits you.

      Liam Jordan -- your 2year-old won't always be 2.....years later, I can still empathise with your experience.....but, why does there have to be 'a bomb in every room'? I didn't always know of the importance -- or even the existence -- of personal boundaries, I 'grew up'(NOT!) in a family of five
      with not a shelf or a cupboard to call my own. -- ditto clothes, toiletries, even my mail was opened before I'd read it & things I'd made were thrown out with the trash.....needless to say, I still have quite an obsession with privacy!
      What I think I'm trying to say is
      ...... I don't know at what age is time to start (you might seek some guidance on this), but children feel safer when they know the parameters, & you can make a start by teaching him respect for his OWN possessions......'this is the box for YOUR toys & when you've finished playing, this is where YOU put them away''
      Maybe you could postpone minimalist guidelines for a while, but you CAN establish some 'no-go' areas -- a minimalist bedroom?
      I really wish you well, & please,
      PLEASE, make the most of this time with your little one
      --- it's all so fleeting......🙏

    • @jeffreybuoncristiano
      @jeffreybuoncristiano  6 лет назад

      Explain.

    • @zasshorne1496
      @zasshorne1496 6 лет назад

      In my opinion, minimalism goes hand-in-hand with simplicity and having less. To me, a beard is having more. More to maintain, more to stress about and more to take care of. Look at the Shaolin monks. I think they're a good example of minimalists. They keep their faces and heads shaved. That's being minimal and simple, in my opinion. There's nothing wrong with having a beard. As a matter of fact, you're one of the fortunate ones who can grow a great, full beard! I just don't think it's being minimal. A good beard requires time and effort to maintain. By all means, I think you should keep your beard. I just know that if I were to grow one, it would complicate my life rather than simplify it. That's just me. Keep up the great work, I really enjoy your videos.
