    People try to tell you what you can and can't be. I don't like that. In this video I talk about the negative feedback I sometimes get (especially as someone who calls themselves a minimalist). I also talk about, as many have wondered, why I have 24 t-shirts.

      If by having more of one or two things, it allows him to make the most out of other things, produce less waste, and consume less, it still counts as minimalism. He is minimizing the peripheral things he needs by maximizing in a few select areas.
      Minimalism is not asceticism. Minimalism is not having the least amount of things possible in order to survive. Minimalism is minimizing the things you have to things that make sense, are useful/used, don't clutter home/mind with little to no return, and maximizing the benefits gained from the posessions you do choose to own.
      In your example, hoarding an entire house full of stuff would do none of those things. Having more than 1 Ferrarri would do none of those things. Mainly because time is finite, and having so much, you wouldn't have time to use it all AND maintain it, thus letting things fall into disrepair and creating more waste.

    People seem to confuse MINIMALISM with AUSTERITY based off those comments you mentioned...
    Austerity is more of a lifestyle where you strip down your entire life to the bare essentials and live within those means.
    Minimalism, which I feel gets a bad rap because its also called a lifestyle, at least to me, is more of a mindset which is opposed to consumerisms. That doesn't mean minimalists don't buy things or own more than the bare essentials. It just means they don't feel the need to participate in the consumer culture of today. That's just my two cents.

    I've been looking into the minimalist movement a lot lately (in a desire to declutter and simplify my life) and ran into the same challenge - what exactly qualifies as minimalist? Ultimately, I have concluded that the term has no actual definition. I believe it's more about making conscious decisions as to how we live our lives, the things we keep in our homes, and the ways we choose to spend our time. I didn't want to spend 20 minutes cleaning and re-organizing my washroom counter every week. So, I took all the crap off of it, donated/tossed the stuff I wasn't using and now the only things living on my counter are hand soap and a vase of dried lavender. Cleaning it takes 2 minutes :) Another great video Matt, cheers!

Not for just the look although it's nice, there's so much daily on shelves or tables we do not use. What is the point?! I want whatever is out to be used and not pack things with us we don't need or use. My goal is to toss what we aren't using daily. This problem transcends into every identity lifestyle. This is why labels suck. For example: I eat a mainly vegan diet to stay in shape but also allow myself to eat whatever(including meat) on a night out with the boys & other occasions. Although i don’t identify as vegan EVER... people see what I eat daily, assign that label(and therefore the rules that apply) and then try to shame or question me when I eat meat. Labels suck & Minimalism like anything else is just a broad mindset that people share about the value of stuff. People get too wrapped up in the rules. Thanks for this video!

    Minimalism is kind of like vegetarianism or veganism. You tell people you don’t eat meat because you care about animals and they tell you plants have feelings too....but since when are they concerned with harming others or morality...you tell someone you live minimally and they point out how you have too many shirts or books...when they have a closet full of stuff

      You realize you aren't normal as a vegan if you aren't down everyone else's throat about eating meat, though, eh?
      Btw, its counterproductive to go down someone's throat about eating meat, since the act involuntarily makes them a cannibal.

      Next time someone tells you plants have feelings, you might want to reply something like, 'I've heard that several times, but I doubt it's true. Plants don't have a brain or a central nervous system, so they can't feel pain or emotion.' A little science often shuts people up. :)

    Minimalism is a mindset, those people are thinking way too much like people think about vegans, and going way too much into how they want it to be rather than how the community of minimalism and veganism are to those individuals which gives both of them a bad name because of those thinking negatively about those things, those people do it to try and ruin a community so I just ignore them. Minimalism is what it means to that person!

    Minimalism to me is reducing hassle. It's kind of like why I never lie; It's not a moral decision, it's a simplicity decision. Life is incredibly easier if you just tell the truth and see what happens. No need to hold onto lies. It's easier to go out when you only have one outfit. Easier to focus when nothing is disrupting your engagement.

    I aspire to be more minimalist but it takes times and everyone is always improving. Those seeking perfection will be seeking misery because it doesn't exist. Everything has blurred lines and you can choose to define the way you live or are as you please. You cannot tell someone else they don't feel or live a certain way.
    Inspirational Matt, keep going dude. I think it's very educational and inspiring regardless of if people would adopt the lifestyle themselves.

    Great video... and after seeing you mention the Minimalism documentary, I went over to Netflix to watch it (for the 2nd time, because I watched it a while back)...
    My wife and I are slowly moving our family closer and closer to being minimalists. We’ve been decluttering for a while, but in our most recent cleanup, we just donated 25 full sized trash bags of stuff and also had a “bulk pickup” trash pickup come by to take about 10 moving boxes worth of junk away! Decluttering our lives has already begun to declutter our minds...

      Sure minimalism isn't totally defined but there are certain boxes you have to tick to call yourself a minimalist and as long as you're not a tshirt designer you cant have 200 t-shirts and call yourself a minimalist

    • @ColinTherac117
      @ColinTherac117 6 лет назад +3

      if everybody is a minimalist, then the word has no meaning to distinguish it from the word everybody. Everybody coming up with their own definitions of words only results in nobody understanding what the other person is saying. Generally, one should think of a minimalist as a 'person who is striving for minimalism'. While this could result in real world scenarios where in achieving that goal you may have 5 forks, part of the journey of minimalism would be receiving advise/criticism that you could do with just having 1 and how to do it. And then because of your journey to minimalism, you would try to change yourself accordingly. This a opposed to non-minimalists who may have multiple copies of items with little to no striving to reduce what they have.

    I will tell you that one of the issues I have with the film is that not one moderate income person was represented and I have never seen them represented in the podcast the minimalists. It is easy to adopt this lifestyle when you have so many options thanks to your income. I also would love to see more POC represented and shown. I do love all of this and the inspiration but these are two areas I would love to see more of.

    • @mattdavella
      @mattdavella  6 лет назад +2

      How do you know the income of the people featured in the film? While I didn't ask everyone their income it would sometimes come up in conversation and it varied greatly. For instance Patrick Rhone told us that his family are technically below the poverty line.

    • @FatGayandTired
      @FatGayandTired 6 лет назад +1

      I appreciate you replying. Many RUclips creators do not. To be blunt, but it was pretty obvious. Let's not feign ignorance and pretend like there is not a huge representational issue with more of these things. We rarely see a low income or even truly middle income household/individual because choosing this is usually in the hands of the privileged. I myself and privileged enough to make decent money and I feel like it is my responsibility to point this out. It is a conversation to have, certainly not one to become defensive about, not that I am saying you are. But we need to be honest that there is a huge lack of representation of low income and POC of any income. If the goal of any of these things is to spread the word of the benefits of this life then we have a duty to do it within communities that might not traditionally know about it. I promise I am not attacking anyone regarding this, I want the things I care about to be better. I have not stopped listening to any of these things.

  • @OJorgeDeAlmeida
    @OJorgeDeAlmeida 6 лет назад +5

    This is comforting. After I found this channel and, soon after, seeing the documentary I started getting rid of clutter and clothes I wasn't particularly fond of like a crazy person throwing stuff out the window. And then there were the books. I couldn't do it. I seriously doubt that I'll ever re-read the Last Unicorn, and the hassle of explaining why it is such a great book despite the title probably isn't worth it, but I couldn't part with something that had such a transformative impact in my life. And there were so many more of these and a bunch more I hadn't read. So Minimalism was not for me , I thought. And if that were the case, it would be alright. For me, the experience of minimalism has been less than a label, an identity, or a criteria of the number of things I'm supposed to have and more of a framework that informs my decisions. Going back to books, it resulted in a compromise of reading every single one on my shelf and I can only buy one if I can knock one of the "to read" list. I think there was a point in there somewhere...

    • @andrewbrendan1579
      @andrewbrendan1579 6 лет назад +1

      I have an ongoing conflict or struggle with the books in my efficiency apartment. I've accumulated, I'm embarrassed to say, maybe 2,000 books that haven't been read yet. Most of the books are in boxes along a wall. I finally realized I have a problem and I cleared out a little over 300 books but I find new ones. The difficult part is I really want to read the books I have but the presence/clutter of so many has been causing me stress for a number of years. I've gone through my books twice and probably should do so at least one more time and ask myself how much I really want to read a book. I simply have to use self-discipline to stay away from Little Free Libraries and Free Days at book sale fundraisers and make more time to read the books I have then give them away though I'll always have a small permanent group of special books. The difficulty for me it's that moment of deciding to give a book away: ow! Once a book is gone I feel fine. I've also started an In and Out list of book titles and my plan is to make the Out list bigger than the In! Other than books I own very little and my living space could probably be cleared out in one day.

I’m really inspired by how in control you are of the way you make money and the way you pursue a career that you are invested in... I’m trying to guide my future in a way that I’m in control of, but I’m struggling to have the confidence to know that I can survive on the less-well-travelled path instead of just taking the sheltered route. You’re an inspiration to me, so thank you for your videos!
