This definitely applies with me as well considering I've received psychological therapy in the past and i have an affinity in regard to statistics, analytics, and sketching (which I consider my primary hobby).
I was diagnosed with Bipolar 1 (well managed, these days), general anxiety disorder and a collection of other alphabet soup diagnoses. I’ve been tracking my moods and habits for almost four years now. I digitized all of my records, inputting them into a spreadsheet sorted by year, divided into months and days, so on, a few years ago. In the beginning, my chart was fairly simple. I assigned a designation of 1-10 to each day, subdividing 1-4 as a “dangerous” or “evaluate and reflect category”, 5-7 as a fairly normal oscillation range, 6 as a baseline, and 8-10 as a “monitor and check in with yourself”/mania category. Over the years, I’ve added stats like my weight, if I’ve done drugs or drank alcohol that day, if I had sex that day, how many meals I’ve eaten, a section for mood triggers and stressors, a section for my weight (divided into healthy and unhealthy ranges, I lose weight quickly in depressive states), as well as a section for medication changes, abnormal spending patterns, notes from therapy, etc. I think I track almost 60 datapoints these days. Having almost four years of data at my fingertips, in that much detail, is transformative for bipolars and those suffering other mental health conditions. I’m able to pinpoint seasonal fluctuations and dips, notice when mania or depression may be kicking in, keep a tab on why I’m sleeping poorly or too much, draw correlations between lifestyle habits and mental health effects-it’s transformative. This tool should be employed by ANYONE struggling with, or managing, their mental health.
The 'keywords' part of your tracking reminds me of "Homework for Life" (if anyone has seen the TED talk / heard ppl like Ali Abdaal talk about it). Basically it's if you had to give a 5 minute story from your day, what was the most storylike moment? and you write down notes for each day. The creator said it was the greatest gift he did for himself and that he soon began to see that his life is full of many stories (even the mundane moments), his life/days started to slow down, and he started to see more beauty and importance in his life than you didn't before. Been doing it for most of this year and definitely want to combine that with mood tracking!
Congratulations Matt! I know it's super weird to be so invested in someone's life but having followed you for such a long time, it has been incredible seeing your journey (and learning a lot along the way) and have nothing but gratitude and best wishes for you and your family. I used dailyo for a couple of years and recently for a few months (though I quit again). It really helped me understand that even if today is horrible and I can't hold back my tears things do get better with time. It gave me hope by showing me that my emotional state was more like a rollercoaster and not a deep hole. Why did I quit? My mood finally felt stable and most days were a 1. I no longer needeed it.
My honest advise to new investors ,buy and hold quality stocks. Ignore market forecasts and opinions, they're mostly entertaining but not very helpful.
Achieving significant returns isn't about volatile stocks; it's about effectively balancing risk and reward. Proper position sizing and leveraging your advantage repeatedly are essential, whether you're a long-term investor or a day trader.
Certainly, many underestimate advisors until emotions lead to losses. A few summers ago, during a tough divorce, I sought a licensed advisor who, through diligent work, boosted my business from $190k to around $720k despite inflation.

Congrats on being a dad! Welcome to the club 😁 I've been tracking life metrics for the past 3-4 years, things like number of steps, if I ate dessert, whether or not I did something creative, etc. While my intent was to pull trends and see how I could improved (I did that for the first two years), now I use it more as a to-do list. With years I've added metrics and narrowed my scope to only track a dozen attributes, instead of the double. And I reward myself for successes. Every time I achieve my objective (wrote 100 words for my novel, which is all written now, btw), a formula adds $0,25 or $0,10, according to the difficulty. And when I want to buy a video game or a CD, I don't feel guilty, because I've earned it. 😀
Matt I cannot begin to emphasise just how much I love your videos. The content, the flow, the animations, the b rolls, the cinematography…. It’s just so clean and wholesome. And congratulations on becoming a father to both you and Nat! Wish you both all the happiness and health in the world!
Thought I‘m the only one who‘s doing that. I write down whether I feel like I had an amazing, good, bad or „normal“ day. Remember: it’s not fact, it’s just how you feel about your day and any feeling is completely okay. It showed me that by the end of each month and year that I actually had overall more good days than I thought. We tend to memorize the bad days more and therefore we are quick to label a month or a year as „so bad“ when in fact often it had its normal ups and downs, and there were even amazing days we can be grateful for. Regarding the bad days, I also wrote down just a few words WHY it felt bad, so that I can learn from it for the future. To my surprise, many times it’s just my own negative thoughts and reactions rather than an external factor. So this experiment really worked for me!
After watching this I decided to add a mood tracker from -2 to +2 on my notion journal I already have created! Easy enough I just added a new property and have a timeline view sorted for mood. That's the closest I can get without paying for daylio (which I have fallen off of and had so many notifications I ignored). I probably won't do everyday for a full year but having that there will be good to know. Thanks!

Such a great video, love it! I have been tracking my mood for the last 5 years or so. I don't do it everyday but I do it once or twice a month. What has worked for me is I divide my feeling in 8 parts - career, home, love life, friends, family, investments, self improvement and health. Over time I can see which things needs the most help and I focus on that. This allows me to gain better self awareness (as you mentioned) and help work on my weakest link first.

Hey Matt, Princy here and I just want to tell you one thing after watching thus video that's thanks for all these amazing content which unveils the beauty of life keep going ✨️✨️
Matt, you are doing amazing work. Really learning a lot from you. Regarding the video, I don't track my mood but I do try to track the things I do every day. One thing I do struggle with most of the days is trying to find satisfaction or fulfillment or in your connotation, fun. Furthermore, please don't bang your head for any reason. It is really bad for the brain. Cheers.
The way you figured out how to rate your day and the "year end" review process you showed was extremely helpful! Those were the parts I always struggled with these types of trackers.
Thanks for the inspiration! I've created my own mood tracker in Excel file and I'll use it every day. I'm very curious what I'll discover about myself 😃
Congrats on becoming a dad! I might be too much of an optimist but I've always seen it as bad moments during a day and that it doesn't make the whole day bad.
I swear by daylio! Started it randomly a few years ago and have stopped. Getting close to a 1600+ days streak and it's an integral part of my routine now.
I love this video! It has been the reminder I needed to nudge me into getting back to using the daylio app. I had used it for at least 365 consecutive days and was so proud of myself for sticking to it. And then I got into this codependent relationship that started sucking up all my energy to the point where I didn't have the ambition to stick to my daily logs. Now that I'm out of the relationship I see how much of a red flag that was and am sad that I stopped using the app because that data could have helped me come to the conclusion that the relationship wasn't healthy much sooner. I'm going to make my first log tonight before bed and do my best to stick to it, even if I feel like I'm in a rut, it's still an important, loving thing to do for myself every day. Thanks for the reminder Matt!
4:08 this is so important. When we're in a negative mood it's almost like we get amnesia that we ever weren't in that negative mood. It really truly feels like it'll never get better and we're just stuck in this permanent state of negative emotion, but then somehow it always does eventually, but we forget this over and over.
Awesome video Matt, Thanks! Just started logging my mood a few days ago using the Apple health app on iOS 17 It's really similar to how you did it with a 5 steps system (Very Unpleasant, Unpleasant, Neutral, Slightly Pleasant, Very Pleasant) It also let you pick and choose how you feel and what had the most impact on you at the time of the log. Plus it takes into consideration other aspects that might affect your mood like "how much time you sleep" and "did you do any workouts" Will be very interesting to see the results in a year from now and identify patterns or trends to see what affects my mood the most and how I can improve myself with that information.
This was one of the more interesting videos you’ve done for me. Well done! This along with time tracking in my calendar is something I want to try now.
Well I know what I'll be trying next month, I'll try to apply this to specific aspects of my life. Categorizing scores rather than giving days a blanket score
All kinds of good takeaways here. And good on ya for taking some time off for the family. I’m betting that will play into the happiness metrics moving forward.
Couldn't find a Patreon so words of affirmation it is! Love this channel, been subscribed for 4+ years, I constantly use the knowledge from your videos to better structure my ever changing life. Thank you for such great content! Also should have got a daylio link as I'm now trying this but I could never do it on paper would lose my mind!
I love this idea!!! I shared this video with my dad!! I should do this so I can figure out what causes me to be more depressed or what causes my anxiety to flare up!! I want to do this!!! ❤❤❤😊😊😊
I am glad you have discovered life after work. I am Spanish, and in the south of Europe we have this culture. We work to live, but we don't live to work. We cannot work over 40h a week (there are a few exceptions but the year has to balance this average). As for myself, I work 5-6h a day in person, and 0-1 at home. Of course you can love your job (I do) but you need your rest and your leisure time. Otherwise you get burnt.

Regarding the video, I don't track my mood but I do try to track the things I do every day. One thing I do struggle with most of the days is trying to find satisfaction or fulfillment or in your connotation, fun.
Furthermore, please don't bang your head for any reason. It is really bad for the brain.
Cheers.
Congrats on the baby Matt. This is awesome news.
CONGRATULATIONS 🥳🥳 You are both going to be amazing parents, no doubt !!
Dude, been following you for years, love the content and keep up the good work
This is the best video I've seen from you in months, I think it's great, I love it
Congratulations for your baby! 😃🥰😘
thanks for making this vid! I'm using the google sheet logging to help keep my days focused
Can't wait to see your new content with a Matt D'Avella junior! Very inspiring channel. Congrats Matt and fam
Can’t wait to hear about your bambino!!! Congratulations 🎉
Congrats on becoming a dad! I might be too much of an optimist but I've always seen it as bad moments during a day and that it doesn't make the whole day bad.
Yay! Our boi is back
Very informative video, thanks for sharing
The commitment to the dry wall bit 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Congrats Matt! Nice to see you back..I'm also a dad now to my daughter Summer☺️
I swear by daylio! Started it randomly a few years ago and have stopped. Getting close to a 1600+ days streak and it's an integral part of my routine now.
This is such a cool and precious concept
The same blogger who undeservedly The same blogger who has an undeservedly low number of views, good luck!! Love you
Congrats on being a dad, that's awesome. 🎉
It's August 1, a perfect way to start the month.. and probably a year of tracking my moods too.
4:08 this is so important. When we're in a negative mood it's almost like we get amnesia that we ever weren't in that negative mood. It really truly feels like it'll never get better and we're just stuck in this permanent state of negative emotion, but then somehow it always does eventually, but we forget this over and over.
9:42 Everything after this time stamp hit me home. I am not the same guy ever since college ended.
Your videos are the few videos where I do not skip through the ad reads because I genuinely enjoy them, so thanks for that 😊
Welcome back Matt! Happy to have you back, wishing you and your new family the best of luck :)
Watching Matt's videos has it's own ritual. It's awesome to consume content with high quality! Always appreciate!
Awesome video Matt, Thanks!
Just started logging my mood a few days ago using the Apple health app on iOS 17
It's really similar to how you did it with a 5 steps system (Very Unpleasant, Unpleasant, Neutral, Slightly Pleasant, Very Pleasant)
It also let you pick and choose how you feel and what had the most impact on you at the time of the log.
Plus it takes into consideration other aspects that might affect your mood like "how much time you sleep" and "did you do any workouts"
Will be very interesting to see the results in a year from now and identify patterns or trends to see what affects my mood the most and how I can improve myself with that information.
I’m happy to hear that. Congrats 😊
Welcome back Matt, great to see you again
I've been doing it weekly, since I started my PhD 25 weeks ago. I think I ought to consider a daily assessment as well.
0:10 I see the next video on minimalist home renovation is coming along nicely
As always ,,, making us better through sharing your experience .
I love his content and dedication! How he makes every of our imaginations into reality wow.
ty for the end clip of you ramming your head through the stunt wall lmao. top tier content 10/10
This was one of the more interesting videos you’ve done for me. Well done! This along with time tracking in my calendar is something I want to try now.
I have been using daylio for 3 years now! It is worth it and I still love it. 😍
Well I know what I'll be trying next month, I'll try to apply this to specific aspects of my life. Categorizing scores rather than giving days a blanket score
I laughed out loud when you bashed your head through the wall 😂 Thanks for excellent comedic timing!
Just the best. The best. The best content.
Just knew it happened. Congrats man
All kinds of good takeaways here. And good on ya for taking some time off for the family. I’m betting that will play into the happiness metrics moving forward.
I am always excited when you updated a new video. I really like your work.
Congrats. Its always worth the wait with your work .....
I believe our geography plays a vital role on our mood. For me as an Iranian woman , it is so hard to be energetic or sometimes be normal when we are overwhelmed with numerus difficulties because the government and so on . 🌱
Congratulations Matt! I’m sure you’re gonna be a great dad and husband ❤
Your content is just SO good!! Whenever a watch it I feel inspired to change something in my life and become a better person/professional. I feel like I haven’t yet but maybe this is the video that will change that 😅
I absolutely loved this video! i feel inspired me to start tracking my mood and journaling now
