New life awaiting,,, I know, I soon have 9 years anniversary, after a friend told me... nah, cutting back never worked for anyone, only complete quit will do
You say, "It's OK to fail." When I was (much) younger I was learning to ice skate. I was trying a new move and my teacher asked if I had fallen over yet. I proudly told her I had not. "If you haven't fallen over," she told me kindly, "you are not trying hard enough." That piece of wisdom has served me throughout life. I now fall over regularly. It is often a good sign.

Hello guys, l came back here after almost 1 year... Here is my story (short version of it :DDD) On 30th December 2019, l was in my bed and l played this video... When the video ended, l told myself: "THAT'S IT, do something really good for yourself!". I made a decision to quit smoking after 12 years. On 30th December 2020 it's going to be ONE year since the day l quit smoking. Trust me guys... IT IS POSSIBLE! Stay strong and l wish you all the best! :)
Keaton Walker - The Minimalist Entrepreneur will we try to learn something unlike you , you are commenting to everyone the same thing which is a really waste of time
I am not going to like this comment, because you CAN do this. These comments convince others that it is okay to sit and not do anything and that they are not alone. Stop. You got this.
The way to do this is more important than getting rid of them and if it could be done in a snap it would be easy. Good ideas but let’s not say “right now.”
@@jstarjstarjstar Just tell yourself that you've gone this long and were strong, it means you can keep going. You KNOW you can because you've done it. Keep going! We're all proud!
@Moroccan Guy Series is a both singular and plural noun. So it accepts 'this' and 'these'. 'This' when you are talking about one particular series. 'These' when you are talking about 2 or more series. So she is 100% correct
It’s a fucking lie. I listened to him. I stopped the video and took a cold shower. It was actually worse than anticipated. I lasted 10 seconds. Stay in your beds people! Never leave! The world hurts.
@@seanmatthewking if you ever feel like trying again, a much better method is to start at lukewarm temp, then gradually decrease temperature till you hop out
magda kannkeinmathe To what extent and purpose? Should I sleep outside on the concrete without a pillow? I’m not being sarcastic here, I’m just wondering where this stops. I believe in discomfort for a purpose, but not torturing yourself for the fun of it.
Weird habit, doing 10 pushup every ad break, whether on RUclips, TV, or podcasts. If my arms are getting too tired, it tells me that I need to get doing something else, something more productive.
Did this every time I lost a soccer game on PC when I was 15~16 years old ..... could do more pushups than anyone I knew at the time...... was terrible playing soccer games
The habits I want to develop and stick to. 1. Have a healthy relationship with food. 2. Stop binge eating 3. Exercise and move a lil more 4. Meditate 5. Live in the moment 6. Mindful spending, giving myself 1 week before buying to see if I really need it. 7. Practice kindness and being practical for most things. Lets do it. 💪
Meditation is the one I question because its truly not for everybody …the typical kind….but there are things one can do that have the same effect….for some people.
The Habits I Want to Develop and Stick to: 1. Abstain from alcohol (for clarity, respect my body) 2. Improve my basic selfcare routine 3. Step away from the world to work on myself (inner healing and discovery) 4. Intuitive exercise (not rigid schedule but based on energy level and connection with nature) 5. Improve my nutrition by cooking new recipes at home 6. Become comfortable in my own skin, accepting myself in my current stage in life.
So I’ve tried a couple of these habits myself, here are my experiences: Quitting sugar: Removed added sugar from my diet and opted for sweetner or low/zero sugar drinks etc. Didn’t really notice a difference in my life until I recently had a cup of tea with 2 spoons of sugar. I crashed moments after, and came to realise that my energy levels had actually been more constant. Cold showers: Did this for just around a year. Noticed feeling refreshed and I didn’t get a single cold or illness at all. Wasn’t sure if it was down to the cold showers but i restarted taking warm showers and have gotten ill 2-3 times since with a cold, viral infection, stomach problems & indigestion etc. Quit caffeine: I was dependent on caffeine for a normal functioning day so this was really hard to do and I had withdrawal symptoms for weeks feeling tired, having constant headaches, etc. I had trouble concentrating and staying awake during the day. After a couple of weeks I no longer felt the need and was doing completely fine, waking up ok and felt fully awake during the day. I think my sleep cycle has actually improved now and I only drink tea/coffee very occasionally and don’t feel dependent anymore. Time blocking: This is one I’ve recently started doing and I do find myself to be a lot more productive. However I also feel like I’m being too hard on myself, underestimating how long tasks will take then feeling annoyed for not having gone through my tasks and not feeling satisfied, whereas in hindsight I know the day was very productive. Perhaps need to be a bit more flexible with the timings and give myself more time for tasks. Journalling: This really does help me clear my mind and helps me come up with solutions to problems or ways to tackle situations that affected me, etc. I do it in the night and reflect on my events for the day and whenever I felt like I had a bad day I focus on the positive aspects of the day and make action plans for a better day tomorrow. Meditating: I don’t do one hour a day like Matt but I do 10 minutes of daily Calm at night when I’m in bed. It really does help me be more centred and I feel I’m able to react less to situations which would have previously affected me for a lot longer. I also think faster and feel less sluggish generally. Gym: Started going regularly for a year. Have noticed tremendous improvements in stamina and endurance. Before, I swear to god the thought of 5 minutes on the treadmill would feel so intense and I would struggle and would be puffing and panting once it’s over. Now I can run for much longer and it feels much more effortless. I don’t get tired easily anymore and I only noticed how much I’d improved when I recently had to run fast to catch a train - I was only slightly breathless, and remember thinking how heavily I used to breathe when I got on the train when I used to do the same before. Overall comments: I did do these for longer than thirty days and implemented them slowly over around three years. I am still continuing with gym, meditating, journaling and time blocking, but have given up on cold showers due to plumbing reasons. I don’t go all out when quitting sugar but still do pick the low sugar option or Coke Zero for example rather than normal Coke. I don’t depend on caffeine but do occasionally enjoy a tea or coffee, especially before a gym session. Need to double down on these habits and improve on them as well as seeing if I can implement new ones in 2020 such as waking up at 5! Great video as always Matt, thanks a lot for sharing your experiences! 🙏🤟
I can relate to the time-blocking challenge. I still occasionally struggle to find a happy medium and sometimes end up making myself stop when it's time to move on to next task I want to get to. Overall, I'm starting to focus more on achieving more balance in my life for greater satisfaction.
Thank you for this comment really. Just think again about artificial sweetner. I read and heard that the body reacts the same as taking real sugar. What about going real sugar free ? I tried it myself on drinks and it is really amazing ! :)
If anyone is trying to start taking cold showers, what I recommend is choosing one song to play every time you take a shower, and when that song ends, that is when you can get out
The biggest change I've made to my habits is going to bed earlier. I am naturally a night-owl but my health was suffering from not getting enough sleep. So I dedicated myself to getting into bed by midnight (I get up around 7:45) which gave me 5 good 90-minute sleep cycles. To my surprise, I actually started getting sleepy even earlier, iike around 10, which got me into bed sometimes as early as 11:15. I have been so proud of this new habit. I too have found that I must focus on just building a couple of habits at once or it doesn't work because it really does take a lot of focus and attention. I'm also working on preparing my meals at home instead of going out to eat like I used to do almost every day. I'm overweight and really wanted to eat more healthily and I've found you really just have to suck it up and cook your own meals to eat healthy long-term. I got a jump-start on this when we went into COVID lock-down because I was too nervous to go eat in public places so I was more motivated to cook at home. But then I decided to take that opportunity to make it became more of a habit. So I"m really proud of that one too. AND I started making sure I get at least 50 ounces of water a day (enough so my pee is a straw-color which is just right). Every day I add magnesium powder to my water bottle and I drink that in the morning and then in the evening. The magnesium REALLY keeps my anxiety under control AND it also makes me sleepy earlier which helps me get to bed on time. I highly recommend it. My next one is exercising more. I bought some bands and hand weights and have started learning how to use them and I want to stretch more too and build up strength in my core for my back. Once I get good at all three of those things, early bedtime, healthy home-cooked meals and exercise, I think I'll do meditation next and then being more routinized with my business tasks (I want to eventually start a YT channel). AND I also want to get good at programming which means I want to do the 100-day code challenge. So I urge people to just give it a try to develop a new habit. It feels really good. I am so glad I did it.
I love people who dedicate themselves to doing the hard work to get what they want. Someday you’re going to look back when you’ve achieved your goals and it’s gonna feel 10x better knowing how hard you worked for them. Keep it up and never give up. You have the mentality that will take you to great places in life.

I did the cold showers for the month of February. Embraced being uncomfortable and ended up being confident to ask a girl out in mid-March. Been dating ever since
I've been trying to incorporate these things into my daily routine: - Learning English and Chinese for at least an hour (I'm from Vietnam) - Working out for an hour or so ( I alternate between hitting the gym and taking gentle exercise at home) - Reading at least 30 pages of a book (on average, I read a book weekly in either my native language or foreign language) - Practicing piano for about 30 minutes
WOW ITS RUSS From all the suggestions i’ve read this one really interested me. I would like for him to give this a go. Would the result be different if you do those things out of habit or if it’s the norm in your country? I live in Holland. When we enter the train and go to the seats there’s a door we have to go through. I’m on if those people that always looks back and holds the door, even when people are taking their sweet time or need to bring down their luggage. At my current job, i travel daily with the train for 3 years. My experience with being kind is 90/10. What i’ve learned is the intention you do the good deed for. Since i’m a religious person i started to do the good deed because it helps others, you cater to others, to relief something from the other because i want Allah to help me in the same way or a better way. Since then whether i get a thank you or not, or people even refuse my help or ignore me. I always go back to the intention. That gives me the biggest relief.
Love this idea. 30 days of kindness. When people say thank you, instead of replying "you're welcome " say "please pay it forward by helping 2 other people "
Best habit for me: Awareness of my choices! For me, being aware and putting consciousness into my everyday choices has made the biggest change for me. It’s not about doing something everyday, but to be aware of my actions, choices and goals.
I gave up chocolate for a month & then donated money I saved to the British Heart Foundation. There's also a few challenges where you only drink water for a week & the money you save from buying coffee, tea, fizzy drinks, alcohol etc. you donate that to a charity based around water, be it building wells in 3rd world countries or lifeboat search & rescue or providing swimming lessons for disadvantaged kids.
I have 114 days today. My life has changed drastically, I’ve started running and my mental health has improved vastly. I started due to PTSD, and didn’t realise alcohol eventually made it worse. Good luck, you’ve got this! One day at a time 🙏
That's very true. I'm a librarian, and we've been encouraged to have conversations with our "senior" patrons. I think they've been getting to know me a lot better (I'm a newer on staff), and it's lovely speaking with them.
That's nice, Tammie! Is it that they feel invisible or are they just being ignored due to stereotypes assigned to people based on chronological age? And how do we know they are 50+ if they are strangers? Here's an additional challenge: Hire a person in their 50's. They are not all set in their ways.
One of my favourite things to do for others! I don't do it every day but definitely more often than most people. The smiles on their faces is priceless. I often do it in front of my teen kids and guess what...I've noticed they'd sometimes do it themselves.
Serafin Nunez I’m the opposite and love talking to anyone I see, people are like books to me and so interesting as everyone has a story. I need to learn to listen more and be quieter for 30 days!. Well done for trying this out.
mad props to you for doing this! I'm a very shy person too and I kind of hate how much it's discouraged on the internet for introverts/people with social anxiety to go out of their comfort zone. As it turns out, just practicing talking to strangers is a huge help. I'm a nurse so I have to walk into someone's room, meet them, and potentially having uncomfortable conversations, stab them with needles, put tubes in various places of their body. Me from five years ago simply could not have done this, I would rather have thrown myself out of a window. I'm so glad I stuck with it though because repeated exposure to uncomfortable social situations has helped me so much to be more social in other areas of my life. I'm still definitely an introvert, just better with people.
tiddlywinks456 really random question...but are you an Aquarius??? (It’s just because I’ve read that Aquarius’ often have this trait, but other s can have this trait too)
Its not a habit, but i've made a jurnal of happy memories. Whenever i remember something that puts a smile on my face i write down something that instantly makes me feel good!
I ended up getting up at 5 and feeding the cats. I will always be waking up at 5 now. Apparently, I trained the cats and they wake me up now. I am trying to reverse this by training them to not wake me until a light comes on. It’s been 30 days. Not working... looks like I wake at 5 forever now.
Heres a tip for quitting social media: wait for a day where everything you see on it is negative, and if it is...delete it right then. (More tips: be spontaneous with this-don’t sit on it. Do it right there and right then) ps. Since quitting fb my emotional health has improved a LOT and I have become way more productive thus leading to me being more satisfied with how I was spending my time. My mom still tells me all the big stuff happening that she sees on her fb so I’m not missing out actually at all. I’m just not wasting my emotional energy looking for gossip online
Great tip! That’s what I did. I saw something really stupid and was like, “why am I spending hours of my day on this when I don’t even like half of it?” And deleted all of them right then and there. I realized I only used social media as something to do rather than something to enjoy.
“Just start”. Best advice ever. New years resolutions often fail because people tend to do everything they shouldn’t do the days before they want to start, which makes it ten times harder to start. If I want to change something I need to start today - not tomorrow, or in a week. So I went out on a run and a quick workout after watching this video. I also calendar blocked my workouts for the next week so that its already planned. Thanks Matt!
@@kikinatrone haha that's true. Here in Vic we get a super dry heat. Going to be 41 tomorrow, and that's in Melbourne. Usually hotter everywhere else. I'm dying a little already just thinking about it.
On getting started, reminds me of the follow: Most people think: Inspiration leads to Motivation leads to Action When in reality it's: Action leads to Motivation leads to Inspiration
I haven't at all experienced action leading to motivation, not directly anyway (surely through inspiration, though). If anything, action leads to building discipline and habits which then leads to more action on a regular basis. Motivation and inspiration are a sort of a separate thing.

The flinch-theory is like the “eat that frog”-ideal where the point is if you start each day eating a frog/doing something you don’t want to, the worst part of the day will already be over when your done, and you can go feel good and strong and other things won’t seem as hard.
Truth. I did cold showers for a few months. It made my usual stressful days at work not so big of a deal. I was able to mentally deal with it, and not be some consumed in a moment that truly wasn’t that big of a deal. Physical pain and discomfort wasn’t as bad either. I’d simply tell myself “get over it, sir”, or “it’s not that big of a deal”; and I was able to think less of myself, and focus on the moment of what’s around me. That was a few years ago. Now I seen humor and a positive side to most things - even when I’m in the most miserable moment or mood: I still acknowledge, and can thus, lighten up a bit.
1. Just get started - don't think 2. Start slow and steady - start with one habit 3. Exercise, Eating Healthy, Business - when you don't feel like it 4. Cold shower at 5am then workout, Journal/Schedule before you sleep 5. Strength comes from weakness
Nada Allam ayee, same. A cold shower before a workout is quite a boost. Like i don't use shampoo or anything, i just turn the water cold and stay in there for a few minutes
Matt, so refreshing to hear that you DO NOT NEED to wake up at 5am to be successful and it's not a bad thing to sleep in and give your body rest. I've been wrestling with this on the self help space. Thank you so much!!

I quit Facebook over 3 years ago, this year I quit Instagram 5 months ago and still going strong! The habit I'm building at the moment is calling at least 2 people I care about each weekend just to catch up. I usually have 4-5min phone conversations with people to resolve work related issues during the week. My "shoot-the-shit" conversations had to start out with mentally prepared conversation topics and lasted for around 20-30min when starting the habit. Now I can call my family and loved ones with no mental preparation and know the phone call is gonna last well over an hour! I already silence my phone during work (airplane mode), but the next habit I want to try is silencing my phone on my off days as well. Only keeping the ringer on at the most. Good luck on all your journeys!
Wake up, WITHOUT TOUCHING SNOOZE BUTTON. When I stopped using this shitty snooze button and start to wake up instantly after alarm ring. I find myself wake up easier than before, hope it will help you
When I tried this it didn’t end very well. I removed the snooze button and ended up clicking cancel every time it rang and then went back to sleep. I was late for school quite a bit.
You all underestimate my laziness. 😹😹😹😹 Even if the phone is in another room has the most uncomfortable sounds ever as ringtone I would 1) first few days wake up and hit snooze than go back to bed sleep comfortably until I must leave. 2) not hit anything at all. It can ring forever I’m fast asleep again. 😂
If you really want to change your life read books, listen, wake up early, do something different every day at the end of the month you will accumulate a very big difference, this is what I learned from this book by Michel Obama who helped me a lot in my life i highly recommend it: amzn.to/2WvrCBz
I did 30 days without complaining and it changed my life. I learned to dig a little deeper to understand what I was truly feeling about the situation. I think I will do it next year to see what else I can learn. Really enjoy your videos! :)
@@cecileganel I want to know this too, I have tried to stop complaining but then I find that it isn't clear to me when I might just be overly censoring myself from expressing legitimate frustrations.
Clair D exactly. Especially in the work environment it’s important to be able to bring up issues that need to be addressed. And as a woman that can often come off as complaining when in reality it’s legitimate frustration. I definitely need to work on general complaining though. It just hard to know where that line is.
I loved your comment about 'the flinch'. That resonates with me. I think my biggest character growth has come from pushing myself out of my comfort zone. Breaking past 'the flinch' moment gets easier and easier - controlling my shyness with peopler, making new friends, trying new things. This one affected me the most. Your videos are amazing - thank you!
I've been through this "self development "journey and I'm only 17 , I reduced my sugar intake because I was SERIOUSLY addicted I wake up every day at 4:45 AM before school to run( I never ever ran or practiced sports before) and then I take a shower , later I have plenty of time to make breakfast (I never had breakfast before school before) I go to school already woken up ,ready and fresh. I lost 12 pounds(it doesn't sound like a lot but I weigh now like a 100 pounds only so I can't lose more pounds otherwise I'm going to be underweight). I can really relate to you when you say you were hard on yourself because I'm a perfectionist and I was really hard on myself too when I missed a day without running or when I didn't accomplish all the stuff that I wrote on my calendar. Being hard on myself gave me major health problems I started fainting from being SO tired, I had panick attacks Hence It's not worth to be hard on yourself it's okay to mess up it's okay to fall because you're gonna rise later
I'm also 17 right now and I'm currently about to embrace on the journey. Hearing your story just gave me ideas and a spark of hope that I can actually commit to this adventure. Hopefully we both can be consistent all throughout 2020!
I just want to say that these habits really do work. I quit eating, went for an ice bath in Antarctica every morning, woke up at 12 am everyday, and I starting meditating for 24 hours daily, write a 500 paged biography about my day everyday, shut down every coffee shop within a 50 mile radius of my home to avoid caffeine temptation, I counted every calorie I’ve ever consumed since my birth, scheduled the next 60 years of my life to the minute, managed to hold my breath for 5 years, still holding it now, and decided to try and create my own drug to get the ultimate productivity out of my day. I just want to say this video is a great start for beginners.
Waw, gotta be a snarky a$$hole cause other people want to become a better version of their current selves and accomplish goals that they believe will better themselves. If you're too scared to fail that you won't even try and resent others for having the courage you lack, then just say it. No one's forcing you to change, or comment on a video. Or even watch the video. Have you tried just scrolling by? 😁
I listened to a new album every other day for 2019 and that was an incredible experience. The breadth of music that is available is awe inspiring and I derived so much joy out of it. I also discovered a good ten or twenty new artists that I'll for sure be keeping track of!
That's fantastic! Please share some of your discoveries. Comment here, but maybe write a blog post or make a video. My favorite discovery was a Taiwanese band called Eggplant Egg. Probably not for everyone since they don't sing in English, but I am awed by their instrumental and songwriting skills, and the depth of emotion in their music. It also helps that I speak Taiwanese and Mandarin...
Acts of kindness for 30 days. 1 intentional act of kindness to make a stranger's day everyday. it taught me to be intentional with the ones I love and showed me how to love or show love to someone who doesn't know me. Helped build my self confidence and social confidence. if you would like more details feel free to ask!
Cut added sugar about three weeks ago (aside from special occasions like birthdays/holidays) and honestly it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made in a while. I feel a lot healthier, I eat less junk, and I eat a lot more fruit and I just feel great. If your looking for something to try for 30 days after watching the vid, that’s my recommendation.
The thing about waking up at 5 am , is that you also need to sleep early enough to counter the exhaustion. A lot of people are under the misconception that waking up early will solve your problems, but you also need to sleep early for it to work. I used to hate waking up at 5 am, but then I started focusing on sleeping between 9:30-10 pm every night, and then it started working for me. It took a lot of effort to force my body to sleep at that time (cause prior to that, I would sleep by like 12 - 1 am ), but after 30 days of practise, it started to show results. And now, I just wake up at 5:30, energized and ready to go.
Hello everyone, I hope you all are doing great! I have worked as a personal trainer since 2019 and now I have started my youtube channel as I want to help more and more people achieving their goals. I do mostly home workouts and all the exercises that I post are proven and their results are very pleasing. I would appreciate a lot your support by subscribing and maybe you will find something that may help you as well.
In Spain, we have the siesta. For an hour every day, after you come home from work, eat, etc you take a 1-hour siesta to let your body relax and destress. When you wake up at around 5, you typically go do some sports or any activity you want. It gives you a moment of rest after your work life so your body can transition to home life.
Exactly. And I love the quiet of the world when you get up early like that. For a very long time I told people 7:30 was the perfect wake up time bc its not early and not late. So many people my age have always thought that was too early. But i feel ok about it because ik if I wake up later I will feel grumpy and like my day is mostly over. By 2pm - no matter what I do or when I wake up, eat, exercise - I am tired. I think all fo these work best by knowing how you best function and how it can work with the things it needs to (work, family, etc)
This isn't so much a habit, as a new frame of mind for me: letting myself fail, and not giving myself shit. Lately, I've gotten in the habit of allowing things to go pear-shaped, or not according to plan, without it being the end of the world. If i'm dieting or budgeting or whatever, and I miss a day, or I eat too much one day, or I spend more than I intend, it's cool. If I miss a day of language practice, or singing practice. No worries. For me, allowing myself to fail has been pretty transformative. Now, these habits have started sticking. And I'm enuring myself to discomfort, which leads to being more productive. I'm glad to see you've gained so much from this year-long experiment. It is truly wonderful
@@claysmith8840 So, in the interest of full disclosure, I have been doing Mindfulness Meditation for a while using headspace. by a wide margin that has been the biggest thing that helps. However, I also do morning pages and word vomiting - writing uncensored thoughts to a specific word count each day (about 2k for me personally) and then chucking it out. I actually wrote 1 million words in a month for NaNoWriMo using this method. In the process of getting every single thought I have in my brain out on paper, I've ended up writing a lot of positive affirmations that has been very helpful. As long as its purely uncensored, it is mad helpful. Also, harder to verify, but I've been using self-hypnosis when I go to bed - specifically Dauchsy on youtube- for a while now, and i've noticed my brain space has chilled out considerably using his work. I'm pretty suggestible, and I'm a proponent of the "Strange Loop" theory of consciousness, so hypnosis while i'm sleeping is super productive. It's like rewriting the meta-data that is your thoughts when you aren't conscious (you're brain still processes info while you are asleep). but, mostly, it's just a matter of practice. These things will help if you do them regularly, for sure. Cheers.
@@Nemo37K So helpful and encouraging!! I've been doing this too and although I still have my moments, I've changed the tone I use with myself from overly harsh to gentle, encouraging and (dare I say) loving... Internal dialog is important, I always knew this but I had a skewed perception that I was actually already being gentle with myself, when actually I was really putting myself through the ringer. What helped me the most was asking myself if I would speak to my significant other the way I just spoke to myself without feeling terrible about it... And it started clicking that this was why I was feeling terrible... Bashing myself without even apologizing or soothing myself afterwards, how ridiculous! Glad you mentioned the writing because I've been thinking about doing just that for awhile, I'll take this as confirmation that I should try it. Any tips on how to approach it without really overthinking lol I'm a writer so I feel like I'm always writing expecting someone to eventually read it, so I feel like I'm writing for an audience... I suppose this would be writing everything I think, without self- judgement or need for analysis and then releasing it afterwards by destroying it?
@@laetitiasmith That's great! It takes a lot of practice, and I'm glad you're getting there :) You're right on the money. The idea is to be as completely uncensored as possible and having a definable metric to hit - word count, minute timer, page count -etc. and then just letting everything come out in a torrent until you hit it. At first, it's mega uncomfortable - because you don't realize how many of your thoughts scare you - but then it feels like a powerful release. I recommend Julia Cameron's "The Artist Way" if you want more insight into this idea. I don't do it in the morning as she suggests, but it still works for me.
I love how u r super honest with ur audience. I saw a lot of videos about RUclipsrs trying habits and they mostly focus on the positive side without showing the challenges that they face.
Habits I want to start but im too scared/lazy to: -leave the house everyday -excercise everyday -eat healthier -write everyday -work on my mental health -dedicate time to think about myself, where I am at, where im going -cut sreen time down
This is so relatable. 4 years ago I was playing games all day and screwing up college. I made the exact same goals as you described. I very slowly started going to the gym and eating healthy. Took me like a year before it became a true routine. It gave me confidence that I could do more. I finally started studying really hard and finished college and have started a job in a very lovely/engaging place since the start of this year. Im still not writing everyday and I have way too much screentime in my free time. But seeing how my life has changed the past few years, I truely believe I can reach my goals. It just takes time and continuous failing and trying it again. The only thing you truely have to do is keep thinking about your goals and keep trying them, no matter how many times you fail. There will come a day where they will stick. And the more you achieve these goals, the more you truely believe that you're capable of tackling the next one.
Just a Personal Tip (maybe you have allready done that but didnt posted it...): Try to be more precise with your plans. Like how much weight do you want to lose, what grades do you want to achieve, where do you want to be more productive? This will help you to be more focused and your brain knows how to work with it. :) And it's more obvious when you achieve a Goal, that Just feels awesome ^^ I Hope you understand what I mean 😅
@@Hoofbeats Yeah he's right. Instead of saying better grades say I want to get Straight B's. Even if this is more ambitious it's waaaaaaaayyyy more likely to become true.
Habit: - Arriving early (minimum 15 minutes before) to everything. Might not sound like a big deal to people who do that regularly, but for a procrastinator that continues to try and kick their bad habit by saying, "ok from now on I'm going to be on time!" On time, is not enough time for a natural procrastinator that will squeeze every last second out to do things, so once I shifted to the choice to be early, I began being on time. :) Not sure why I stopped. It actually worked well for a while. Thanks for the inspiration to start again!
I should definitely give it a try. Always late for everything, because procrastination and ADD. Brain goes: "you got five minutes until you have to leave home, why not start doing laundry while petting cat and looking for your lost keys/earphones/wallet?"
The one habit that has changed my life the most: I created a watching game for youtube videos. Every time someone in a video says certain words or does certain things, I stop and either work on a project, or do what the person just said. I watch mostly decor/crafting videos and minimalism videos. Examples of things people say that I use as cues to pause the video and do something to move forward: minimal-, less, relationships, cute, pretty, a unit of time (2 minutes, 10 minutes, etc.), stressed, pause, "I'm so excited," "let's get started," "do a 2-minute tidy." There are lots of others. I just notice what words I'm hearing often, or expect to hear in a video, and add those to the list of word cues. Things people do that I use as cues: hanging curtains, painting a wall, using a power tool, washing a dish, making coffee/tea, etc. Instead of feeling like a loser because I just wasted hours binge-watching videos, I can take an hour to finish watching just one 10 minute video, and I end it feeling accomplished, because I've gotten a LOT of stuff done. So if I decide to keep watching, it'll support me in getting even more done!
I struggle with an auto immune disease and I started a 6 month elimination diet.. I'm on week 6... the first 2 were the worst in the world.. now I am doing fantastic. It's so hard. I make EVERY meal I consume myself.. I have EXTREME restrictions and yet... it's worth it. For my health. I was vegan for years and this is by far the hardest thing I've ever done. Some restrictions are completely gluten free, sugar free, preservative free, acid free... but I feel better than I ever have. The trouble was just to start. And now... I'm so glad I did.
@@LoLeKarlchen already on it, kind of by default haha.. The diet/lifestyle I'm on was chosen through a blood test specifically showing what my immune system is okay with and what it isnt.. by having the satisfying and healing foods, my body doesn't need food as much. I fast probably 3x a week 12 hours more/ less. Amazing advice though, thank you!!
I do cold showers everyday. The trick is to start slow, from the bottom up. Get your legs wet first then torse then head, this helps your body acclimate to the cold instead of get shocked by it.
Not a gud way to do it. U pour water to ur feet first, the body heat moves to the head region fast. Not beneficial. If u want u can start by putting a little bit of water at the top of ur head and then do it which ever way u want. Just saying.
Thank you so much for this video, Matt. I've been trying to do various self-help stuff to lift myself from depression, including quitting sugar and caffeine. Then I came across this video and all the things you mentioned resonate with myself so much that I almost cried. These small things are actually huge, and yes they can save lives. I hope more people see this precious video. Thank you!
After watching your 30 day cold shower video when it came out, I eventually got around to trying it out for myself, but not committing to only 30 days. I made a commitment to take a cold shower for an entire year, and never take a hot or warm shower. Coming up on New Year’s Day will be my marking of 7 months, and wow has it changed my life. Matt is right on point, if you just try things and commit, they really do have a big impact on you. Thank you Matt!!
After watching the no hot shower episode, I decided to try it. I have to admit it was easy in the summer but when it got cooler and now its winter it can be challenging to say the least. Benefits: 1. Decrease hair shedding. 2. Less greasy hair that I have started washing my hair 2-3x/wk unless I go to the beach/lake/pool or sweaty in general. 3. More energy in the morning. 4. Skin less dry/ashy. 5. Oddly enough my water bill went down. Maybe its bec I dont sit and soak under the hot shower. Everybody should try this. Its life changing!
Welcome to the club, I did this a few years back and it's one of those things that you'll never regret doing. It's also something that really impresses people when it comes up in conversation. Although, I try not to bring it up myself and only mention it when other people talk about it.
This is not a joke. I quit the internet in february. I became one of the most enjoyable people in my university Edit for who don't read replies: I came back in March (1 month off internet)
When you say you quit the internet, do you mean all social media and news sources? I've quit social media and news for the last few weeks. But I still use the internet to learn thing that I want to learn, like guitar lessons and other interesting things. What did you do without the internet?
@@caretree578 good question. The thing is I didn't use the internet for anything, even if it was university or hobbies related... i just didn't use it. It gave me a chance to experience the world outside. I got a job in the weekends. I spent more time with old friends and made a dozen more. I learned alot of new stuff and Life was really good. And I mean REALLY GOOD. Ps: I even had a girlfriend
I have never had a facebook , instagram, twitter account and I am one of the happiest people on planet earth. Some people said I miss out a lot. Yea maybe. But it is missing out that gets me so happy and positive everyday because I live for myself not for other people (definitely not to impress people) by choosing what comes into my mind (choosing what information is allowed for myself to see).

This channel inspired me to do something i've been dreading and putting off for quite a while; quitting marijuana. Although it's not chemically addictive I found myself being so dependant on it for happiness, but it started to stunt my personal growth and development because of how content I was with being stoned all the time. Watching this channel has opened my eyes to all of the things I hope to accomplish, and I mustered up the courage to quit for my hopes and dreams. So far, I've noticed how much more inspired I have been and i've found myself wanting to experiment and fill my time with other things now that i'm deprived of weed, and it has been rejuvenating. I found that I can function just fine without it, and it's made me more resilient to doing things I don't necessarily want to. So thank you Matt, for helping me help myself. P.S. I take cold showers ;)
Congratulations on rediscovering the world and your self. I hope your journey to happiness is full of obstacles and lessons, that there are a lot of wildflowers by your path and that all your weaknesses turn into strengths. Good luck and good health.
Gj man! The initiative is always what matters. The fact you decided it was finally time to quit, and actually followed through is awesome. Gl and just keep going, you're doing great haha.
I am grateful for finding your channel through your viral video " A Day in the Life of a Minimalist" You have become my favourite RUclipsr, I watch every video you make and it is very entertaining and informative. This year I will try to push myself out of my comfort zone, not try I mean I will. And it thanks to your videos showing that a person can push through hard things and it is not as hard as it seems. You will encounter failures, but that is a part of life. The most important thing is to start.
Some of the habits that I have started that have really stuck and made my life better are: Prayer Journaling every morning, Oil pulling (swishing coconut oil around in my mouth for 10 plus minutes) every morning, drinking vinegar water every morning, kneeling to pray every night before bed, heading to bed by 10 pm, looking for the good in others and in situations I am in - practicing positivity and writing a list of things I am thankful for every morning. I find it very helpful when working on a new habit to somehow relate it to something that I already do. If I can tie it in with something else it seems to stick so much better. Also, do give yourself some grace. You pointed that out as well. There are days you will be sick or traveling and your schedule just doesn't work the same way. Things will be missed. You can't kick yourself for that - just start again and keep working at it.
*Quit sugar* Took cold showers *Woke up at 5:AM daily* Meditated 1 hour daily *Journaling daily* Tried to build habits *Quit caffeine* Counted every calorie *Tried IF* scheduled every minute of day *Tried breath-work*
One thing that I started working on was self-reflection. I know it comes naturally for some people but life really got me so down this year, I started and it is crazy how fast I adapted. I needed it so badly for my mental health I didn't even realise how easily it became a part of my life. I know it isn't technically a 'habit' but it's really started to change my life!
@@markveselovspb sorry I forgot to mention 😅 not really a challenge and I feel like it would be different for everyone, but what worked for me is cutting out all distractions and focusing on writing/journaling, when I felt overwhelmed. It slowly became a habit for me because it was a good outlet and encouraged personal accountability. A lot of trial and error before tho. Different methods might suit different people, I was just lucky enough to find a method comfortable for me. Hope this was better articulated!
Things I gave up in the last 5 years : * Sugar * Meat * Junk Food * Social Media * Toxic People * Hating Myself * 15 Kilos * Clutter (in my house and my head) * Chasing happiness * People Pleasing and Codependency * Perfection.
@wearealltubes they are. I presume they mean not to do something which is good, but you are expected to do, or is natural for you to do, but to do something extra, out of your zone. Let's say (it's a very basic example) you're rushing to catch a bus, not because you're in any particular hurry, but because the whether is bad and you want to be home soon. Suddenly you are approached by a foreign tourist who lost their way to the hotel. You realise explaining the route will take you a couple of minutes, and you will have to wait for the next bus. It's not rude of you to tell them "sorry, I'm in a hurry" and go, because it's not a life threatening situation, they can find help elsewhere and you have something you want to do. But a random act of kindness is if you decide in this very moment to forget about your needs and focus on a complete stranger.
Petyr Baelish it's inspired me to start my own RUclips channel and put myself out there more. It's also made me more confident in myself and be willing to try new things.
"When I showed up and just did the small things each day, that's when I saw the biggest growth in the long run." Needed to hear this, thank you. Also I really would love to get rid of my mentality that if I can't do it perfectly then I don't want to do it at all. I am truly afraid of failure and not being perfect, I've been this way my whole life and I have no idea how to change that mentality.
Hi Kimberly! I understand how hard it is to let go of perfection and to give yourself grace. One tool that has helped me understand more about myself and the way my mind/personality works is through this personality test called the enneagram/9 types. Any of the free quizzes give you a good starting point of your number. Each number has healthy and unhealthy versions of themselves. Knowing my number has been a good starting point for me to grow and understand my own pitfalls. Also, if it helps to read this: You are allowed to be not perfect and are loved when you are not perfect.

@@mikebolton2388 I also tried a new diet for 1 month, journaled everyday for 3 weeks. I didn't start all at the same time, but naturally added more thing when I was ready. I don't do these 2 today, but I've learnt a lot by doing them.

When I was (much) younger I was learning to ice skate. I was trying a new move and my teacher asked if I had fallen over yet. I proudly told her I had not.
"If you haven't fallen over," she told me kindly, "you are not trying hard enough."

so how's it going?
@@11Renee11 how are you doing? how's it going?
So I’ve tried a couple of these habits myself, here are my experiences:
Quitting sugar:
Removed added sugar from my diet and opted for sweetner or low/zero sugar drinks etc. Didn’t really notice a difference in my life until I recently had a cup of tea with 2 spoons of sugar. I crashed moments after, and came to realise that my energy levels had actually been more constant.
Cold showers:
Did this for just around a year. Noticed feeling refreshed and I didn’t get a single cold or illness at all. Wasn’t sure if it was down to the cold showers but i restarted taking warm showers and have gotten ill 2-3 times since with a cold, viral infection, stomach problems & indigestion etc.
Quit caffeine:
I was dependent on caffeine for a normal functioning day so this was really hard to do and I had withdrawal symptoms for weeks feeling tired, having constant headaches, etc.
Time blocking:
This is one I’ve recently started doing and I do find myself to be a lot more productive.
Journalling:
This really does help me clear my mind and helps me come up with solutions to problems or ways to tackle situations that affected me, etc. I do it in the night and reflect on my events for the day and whenever I felt like I had a bad day I focus on the positive aspects of the day and make action plans for a better day tomorrow.
Meditating:
I don’t do one hour a day like Matt but I do 10 minutes of daily Calm at night when I’m in bed. It really does help me be more centred and I feel I’m able to react less to situations which would have previously affected me for a lot longer. I also think faster and feel less sluggish generally.
Gym:
Started going regularly for a year.
Overall comments:
I did do these for longer than thirty days and implemented them slowly over around three years.

Thanks for your insights!

I am so glad I did it.
happy i came across the gem about magnesium

I love people who dedicate themselves to doing the hard work to get what they want. Someday you’re going to look back when you’ve achieved your goals and it’s gonna feel 10x better knowing how hard you worked for them. Keep it up and never give up. You have the mentality that will take you to great places in life.

Unless it’s the middle of the night and your watching these videos so you can get all the work done because literally in 5 days the semester ends
habits i should stick with:
1. read everyday
2. write on journal
3. exercise every morning
read whenever you are in the bus or in places where you have nothing to do to not waaste time.
excercise throughout the day to make sure you to to sleep tired (so you can sleep better obviously)

Amazing!! Go you!
aw nice
so proud of you!!
I've been trying to incorporate these things into my daily routine:
- Learning English and Chinese for at least an hour (I'm from Vietnam)
- Working out for an hour or so ( I alternate between hitting the gym and taking gentle exercise at home)
- Reading at least 30 pages of a book (on average, I read a book weekly in either my native language or foreign language)
- Practicing piano for about 30 minutes
Good luck!! I nearly have the same goals but I am waiting to finish my final exams to start wish me luck :)

awesome goals girl! keep going, I believe in you!
You wifey🥰
You have such a rocking name.
Do a good deed for a stranger for 30 days. Even holding the door.. see if the results from helping others impact your thought for others.
This one is actually a very good one! We need more of this and not that cold shower nonsense 😂
Love this idea. 30 days of kindness. When people say thank you, instead of replying "you're welcome " say "please pay it forward by helping 2 other people "
I try to give genuine compliments everyday. I bring in the neighbors trash cans, etc.
loved!

Challenge-say hi or something nice to a stranger over 50 years old everyday. Many older people feel invisible. It doesn’t take much to make their day.
Tammie Renee Love this! I’m over 50.💎
Yes this is true. I agree with you. 🇵🇭
Talked to a stranger everyday for thirty... As a person with social anxiety disorder this was my personal nightmare...
I'm still definitely an introvert, just better with people.
question how did u go about this? idk if i see a stranger everyday

4 solid months without logging in or posting. Best. Decision. Ever.

On getting started, reminds me of the follow:
Most people think: Inspiration leads to Motivation leads to Action
When in reality it's: Action leads to Motivation leads to Inspiration
Mark Manson’s book “the subtle art of not giving a fuck” is a pretty good read that dwells into that for a bit
Wow
I haven't at all experienced action leading to motivation, not directly anyway (surely through inspiration, though).
If anything, action leads to building discipline and habits which then leads to more action on a regular basis. Motivation and inspiration are a sort of a separate thing.
I believe it leads to most achievements! Good for you.
"Routine is not about building a habit, it's about building an endurance towards discomfort, frustration and disappointments. Routines helps you build a skillset of choosing and doing the hard things which opens the world of possibilities." Veronica Marie 🖤
The flinch-theory is like the “eat that frog”-ideal where the point is if you start each day eating a frog/doing something you don’t want to, the worst part of the day will already be over when your done, and you can go feel good and strong and other things won’t seem as hard.
nigga huh??
@@jaymkay reread it, slowly
I do two things every day I don't want to: go to bed & then get up.

I find myself wake up easier than before, hope it will help you
Christian NGUYEN has this going till winter break waking up around 6:00 am ... now i’m watching this at 4:15 am after playing video games
When I tried this it didn’t end very well. I removed the snooze button and ended up clicking cancel every time it rang and then went back to sleep. I was late for school quite a bit.
lolhikarixd Thanks for the advice! I’ll definitely try it.
You all underestimate my laziness. 😹😹😹😹 Even if the phone is in another room has the most uncomfortable sounds ever as ringtone I would
1) first few days wake up and hit snooze than go back to bed sleep comfortably until I must leave.
2) not hit anything at all. It can ring forever I’m fast asleep again. 😂
Why not just set your alarm to a more realistic time? If you have an extra 5 minutes to "snooze" just set your alarm for that time
This is the most positive and supportive comment section I’ve stumbled across yet! 😀

I reduced my sugar intake because I was SERIOUSLY addicted
I wake up every day at 4:45 AM before school to run( I never ever ran or practiced sports before) and then I take a shower , later I have plenty of time to make breakfast (I never had breakfast before school before) I go to school already woken up ,ready and fresh.
Being hard on myself gave me major health problems I started fainting from being SO tired, I had panick attacks
Hence It's not worth to be hard on yourself it's okay to mess up it's okay to fall because you're gonna rise later
Be careful how you treat yourself, you don't want to do something that undermines your health x

Any advice on how you learned to be easier on yourself? This is easily my biggest problem when I try to build habits or be productive.
It takes a lot of practice, and I'm glad you're getting there :)
You're right on the money.
The 12 videos of Matt that changed my life. Who else watching Matt has added value to life again?
I love how u r super honest with ur audience. I saw a lot of videos about RUclipsrs trying habits and they mostly focus on the positive side without showing the challenges that they face.
Habits I want to start but im too scared/lazy to:
-leave the house everyday
-excercise everyday
-eat healthier
-write everyday
-work on my mental health
-dedicate time to think about myself, where I am at, where im going
-cut sreen time down
dont forget about meth
JS you got this!!
You just did! One thing at a time...
And the more you achieve these goals, the more you truely believe that you're capable of tackling the next one.
why it's important for you to write everyday?
My goals:
-be seizure free for at least 1 year
-lose weight
-learn my 3rd language
-get better grades
-be more productive in general
Great! WOE-oeh!

Habit:
- Arriving early (minimum 15 minutes before) to everything.
Might not sound like a big deal to people who do that regularly, but for a procrastinator that continues to try and kick their bad habit by saying, "ok from now on I'm going to be on time!"
On time, is not enough time for a natural procrastinator that will squeeze every last second out to do things, so once I shifted to the choice to be early, I began being on time. :)
Not sure why I stopped. It actually worked well for a while. Thanks for the inspiration to start again!
Lez Gogo I struggle with being on time! I procrastinate too! Thanks for sharing! ❤️
@Lez Gogo ~great idea! I've struggled with being on time for a very long time. It feels so good to be on time or "early"!!
I should definitely give it a try. Always late for everything, because procrastination and ADD. Brain goes: "you got five minutes until you have to leave home, why not start doing laundry while petting cat and looking for your lost keys/earphones/wallet?"
Lez Gogo Thanks for sharing this!!!
This is a good one. I'm starting today.
So if I decide to keep watching, it'll support me in getting even more done!
thats very clever! thanks for the inspo 🤗
I suggest you look into the fasting focused lifestyle ;)
@@LoLeKarlchen already on it, kind of by default haha.. The diet/lifestyle I'm on was chosen through a blood test specifically showing what my immune system is okay with and what it isnt.. by having the satisfying and healing foods, my body doesn't need food as much. I fast probably 3x a week 12 hours more/ less. Amazing advice though, thank you!!
you mean celiac?

I do cold showers everyday. The trick is to start slow, from the bottom up. Get your legs wet first then torse then head, this helps your body acclimate to the cold instead of get shocked by it.
I like the shock. I know it's not really healthy but when I wake up I go in bear-mode into the cold. Wakes me up like no other thing and I love it.
I like shock mode too... it's amazing
@foenems grave shoulder..
torso
Not a gud way to do it. U pour water to ur feet first, the body heat moves to the head region fast. Not beneficial. If u want u can start by putting a little bit of water at the top of ur head and then do it which ever way u want. Just saying.
Hey Matt, how about trying to be as close to zero waste as possible for 30 days?
Would love that
Great idea 💡
Great idea!
That would be really cool! Id actually join in on that
That would be cool.
Thank you Matt!!
what benefits have you seen personally....
&
Benefits?
After watching the no hot shower episode, I decided to try it. I have to admit it was easy in the summer but when it got cooler and now its winter it can be challenging to say the least.
Benefits:
I became one of the most enjoyable people in my university
Edit for who don't read replies: I came back in March (1 month off internet)
Esha i’m not him but here’s a start, either delete them, put them in a separate “no touch” app box or folder, and or find replacement things you can do instead of social media (like reading) ((make a list))

J-Mac's Amateur Kitchen captain sinbad is not a good channel. The guy believes in pseudoscience
In which time did he gave shout-out to Sinbad?
@@FellowTravelerVlog Don't know the guy's content personally, but everything is just pseudoscience until it has been "accepted" through the use of the scientific method and peer review - didn't make them not real before we figured out how the thing worked.
You also can't forget the multitude of things "forgotten" or just simply written out (things such as the effects of sunlight (or alternate source of vitamin D) on a developing fetus until a whole slew of fetuses were born with so many bone fissures that they were often taken away because newer doctors had no other explanation than child abuse) - "the sun is good for you" was just pseudoscience until the *active* need to look into it.

June: No meat
July: Sleep at same time every night
August: Meditate for 20 minutes everyday
September: Journal everyday
October: No sugar/caffeine
November: Quit social media
December: Clean a part of the house everyday

I wish more people would realize that even though it may not be chemically addictive, it can be very habitually addictive. That’s great that you quit!

It’s insane looking back at those challenges, the year went by too fast. I still remember the sugar one 😱

*Woke up at 5:AM daily*

*Tried breath-work*
One thing that I started working on was self-reflection. I know it comes naturally for some people but life really got me so down this year, I started and it is crazy how fast I adapted. I needed it so badly for my mental health I didn't even realise how easily it became a part of my life.
I know it isn't technically a 'habit' but it's really started to change my life!
What did you do as a challenge? I didn’t really get the point. Did you just convince yourself or what?
Self reflection is so hard good for you. Sounds like it was a great benefit to you
@@markveselovspb sorry I forgot to mention 😅 not really a challenge and I feel like it would be different for everyone, but what worked for me is cutting out all distractions and focusing on writing/journaling, when I felt overwhelmed.
It slowly became a habit for me because it was a good outlet and encouraged personal accountability. A lot of trial and error before tho. Different methods might suit different people, I was just lucky enough to find a method comfortable for me. Hope this was better articulated!

Do a random act of kindness every day.

"When I showed up and just did the small things each day, that's when I saw the biggest growth in the long run." Needed to hear this, thank you. I am truly afraid of failure and not being perfect, I've been this way my whole life and I have no idea how to change that mentality.
Knowing it is the first piece of the puzzle...Be aware and watch it slowly change... you got this!- jennifer
Obviously you need to commit to making a lot of mistakes! Do some things “wrong”, like wearing your bra inside out. Break out of your perfect habit!
