    I'm 16 now and the first time I counted my items I was 15 and I owned 765 things. I say my age to show that I haven't had time to accumulate a lot. A year after my first counting I counted again and was down to 430. Everyday I continue to make that number smaller and I hope to one day be able to live an amazingly free life, and maybe even live out of a backpack.

      That's impressive stuff! Keep it up and remember that it's not about the number of total items you own but rather the number of items that you own that actually bring you joy. Keep it up!

    Don't forget that the aim of minimalism is not to have less stuff, but to have only the important stuff so that you can focus on what matters most to you.

      part of it IS downsizing though. no hoarder is a minimalist. that's just not how it works.

      Video Games Are Fun Owning a lot of stuff is not hoarding, not knowing when to throw things out is hoarding. Have as much as you want and need, just understand when its time to throw things out.

      You also have to take into account that the average American household has more then one person in it. It averages at about 3 to 4 people in each household and many have even more people then that.

      I'm not so sure on the 300,000 number. My family has a lot of stuff and I think more than most people but I don't believe that.

      But this is only his cloths basically. Not including anything else that is in the house, kitchen, bathroom, books, etc.
      Also, I don't think fixating on a number is the key, as he said in the video, that might be a good goal, but what you should keep in mind is more what brings value to your life without weighing you down. Or as Mari Kondo would say, what brings you joy. :)

  • @BradWadeNL
    @BradWadeNL 7 лет назад +50

    Here is the thing. You don't need to have a certain number of things to be a minimalist. Just only own what things that have value and also give you joy. You don't need to deprive yourself but it is a good thing to try once in a while to see if you really need it. Cable television and mobile data were two things I knew I could live without but I only knew that by semi-depriving myself.

    • @markleruste
      @markleruste  7 лет назад +5

      100% Brad, it's not about "how much you own" but rather "does what you own bring you joy?". That's why my idea of 100 things or less was silly. As it wasn't about that. But the process did help for sure!

    For me it all started when I would tidy up the surfaces in my room and I live by the saying of clear space, clear mind. Then a couple months ago I decided to purge my room and had like 8 boxes of stuff to get rid of and 2 big black bags to trash. Not quite done, yet. It's not easy when you love cute stuff and knick knacks, but I'm sick and tired of useless things lol. As someone with anxiety and depression I'm pretty confident that this has cleared my scrambled mind by 60%

    Hiya Mark I have been going minimalist for about a year and have recycled, past on, given to charity and sold 90 % of what I had previously this wasn't just clothes but books items toys jewellery and paperwork. I took 4 car loads out if my loft one week, a lot had been brought in by a prepper I had staying with me for 8 months who would skip for items, wood and other things.
    it's been a journey. I am now going to minimise what I have left so laying it all out will be good to do, I will film it and share. loved the way you filmed this inspiring.
    I have been folding clothes Marie Kondo style for a month now. I have simple ikea units for all my possessions now 16 drawers in all and hope to get it to 12 soon.
    love the minimalist feeling more room for yoga and a Zen feel.

    I’m 16 rn so I’m living with my mom. We have a lot of stuff, not like hoarding but decorations on walls and stuff we also have quite a lot of pets due to me loving animals. I want to make my room an open space. A space that I can freely be in. I do have a lot of rigs I don’t use anymore including more than 100 books that I no longer read or interested in reading again. Clothes wise I don’t have a lot, it’s mostly other things like small trinkets and other things I don’t need but I have the mentality that I want to keep it and there isn’t a reason to throw them out. Thank you for this video! Because of this I’m starting my journey to becoming much more free creatively and life in general!! I’m hoping to have my mom and sister join me to make the house less cluttered and make it a new lifestyle for us!

    To be honest, I dont see a point in counting my possessions. Technically I could do it, its just counting, but the number has no real value. Whats the point in counting single socks, cables, plates and cuttlery etc. They are different things and it makes no sense to put them into one single number. I personally think, that you should know what you have got - you dont need to get it all out and put it onto the floor to know that. Just go through drawers and shelves from room to room and make sure that you know what you own and make sure, that you love the items that you own and that none of the items give you a bad feeling or connects to a bad memory. The most important is being happy with the things you own and not spending too much time on thinking about what you own :)

    Can I admit I'm jealous you're starting out with an amount you can sort in less than one day? Grant it, I'm married with 3 kids but still. I would love to get to where we could move house in 24 hours if necessary. We have too much! I think it's wonderful that you're doing this while you're young and single. Hopefully you'll be really conscious about what you let in as you life and family expands.

My goal is to become finally free of crap by next fall- 2018. I don't miss any of the stuff! One day I counted my socks, I had 328 pairs of socks! Now i'm down to maybe 100 give or take!

    I'm an aspiring minimalist. I started a week ago. I'm taking it step by step. Seeing 5 Items a day.
    My criteria if something stays or leaves is this.
    1) what it means to me?
    2) does it serve a purpouse in my life?
    3) am I going tu use it and how much. For example I lived a year in US and moved back home to Puerto Rico. So the winter clothes I had are useless back home. Because we have summer weather the whole year.
    4) do I Need This?

    It's really helpful to see where you started from and watch you go through it. Many minimalists show the end result and talk about it, but if I stare at what they have and compare it to what I have, my belongings begin to feel incredibly overwhelming. Seeing that you're starting with a lot provides a comfort that it's supposed to look like it does. It inspires me to look at it positively and begin to transform it, instead of getting rid of something that got out of control. Thanks!

    I've just finished my clear out and have ended up with 101 items of clothing, bags, etc. I only started with 147 and so I've only got 1 bag for the charity shop. If I'd been more ruthless, I could have got down to 85-90 as I kept 25 tshirts but I really like them all. Realistically, I only need 10-12 tshirts. I also kept 3 ties that I'll probably never wear but I love them.
    Over the next couple of months, I'll keep an eye on what I wear and, maybe, a few more items will go.

    I've been working through all my things using the KonMari Method for about a year now. After I finished the first time, I realized I could get rid of more and did another whole round. I must have made ten or more trips to the Goodwill, plus, in keeping with honoring your possessions, I took some items to special places I thought would find them a better home (collectibles and antiques to a shop, a set of drums to a man who refurbishes them and sells them, and vintage tees to a vintage shop in LA., etc.). My house didn't feel or look like a hoarder's house before, but I just can't imagine how I kept all that stuff! My house feels cleaner and calmer now, and I hope you find that same feeling. Enjoy the journey, I know I did!

    I've counted some categories of clothing,but only after extensive decluttering. We moved 6 months ago, so I got an idea of how much total stuff we had - not just clothes. I halved my personal possessions and am working on doing so again, but there are a lot of things to finish with first, esp. books to read up.
    To be honest, numbers don't bother me and I don't think it's necessary to get down to a certain number of possessions. Minimalism is a mindset that goes beyond figures and quantities. I want to make future moves easier and streamline my life (or I should rather say continue streamlining my life😀), I definitely don't feel the need to meet a 100 item requirement.
    OK, now for the book vid!

    If I don't count the items in the kitchen I am under a hundred items, if I do count them it adds a big chunk to my total item count, and most of that is from things like a 28 piece pot set where I use a grand total of four (or five, I do occasionally use the steamer insert for the 1.5L pot) pieces out of it.

    I've mixed feelings watching ..but mainly want to cry !! I've gotten rid of lots but soo much to still go ! I got rid 40 bags worth in lent then have attempted a bag a fortnight and try to rid an inch file of paper work a week . My home has 20 years of clutter from me and my son. I'm trying to think how many of anything do wee need ...its helped me to think 17 socks or 17 of anyone thing im wondering anything that you let go of you have now regretted and has it helped your mental emotional health as i feel dragged by stuff but the anxiety of the thought of having it in one place .......gonna try ! thanks Janice

    In counting your items, do you count everything? Furniture, notebooks, pens, bottles of hand sanitizer, etc.? I usually find it easy to get rid of clothes, shoes, bags, but find I cannot get rid of furniture, or the more practical items like bottles of lotion, etc.

    Such a nice video! I do this every so often and I try to keep my spending on clothes low and people actually have been calling me crazy for throwing out my stuff. I'm just happy I got to help others with the stuff that didn't even add anything to my life and I am happy to see that I'm not the only one, I hope more will join!

    Good job!! I like the way it feels to give stuff to charity. It seems I am redeeming the situation. Now it’s available to those who cant afford things and can use it now versus me just storing it and being burdened by excess. My minimalist journey is ongoing, productive, and positively benefitting every area of my life and well being. Minimalism continues to amaze me how it gives focus and ability to do life purpose better.
    I have counted things in the past or have a container of some type for a boundary for excess. I plan to go thru my things again a couple more times before the end of the year. I’m inspired to count them again to see where I am in my journey. Soon I will go on a medical mission trip and I look forward to how that will effect my mindset. The people we will be helping have very little in terms of possessions but I have a feeling they will be rich in other areas. : ) Thanks for sharing your progress!

    Thanks for this awesome video - I'd like to cut down what I own so I can focus my attention on the 5 things that matter most to me, including music, health, and adventure. I definitely have hoarded WAY too much clutter and clothing over the years. I would love the clean, open feeling of a decluttered life - it just seems so far away from where I am now. I think I'm mentally preparing to take the next step...

    I just moved across America to New England and gave just about everything away except for roughly 50 items that fit in my suitcase and the trunk of the car. Funny enough, I want to keep downsizing to around 20-30 items and really keep what I love, but we'll see.

    I can't do it like that, it's too overwhelming and time consuming for me to do everything at once. So, instead I go at it by section. Like the closet now, then this shelf, that shelf, etc.

I have not made time to go through everything that I own. I am also slowly progressing on a zero waste lifestyle which is why I feel the need and was inspired to go through my stuff. I honestly feel like I use/wear only 50% of what I have.

      I should take a page out of your book! That's impressive. And I'm sure ultimately I could survive with one pair of flip flops and one pair of trainers. But then again, I also enjoy variety sometimes :)

    • @fngqrie
      @fngqrie 8 лет назад

      +Mark Leruste yes, its fun to have extra pairs, but i ended up wearing the same pair again and again, so i stop buying sandals. Always go with neutral for everyday, so you can wear it with every color of clothing. I go with white for sandal or flipflop. Black for flats. And nude, brown, and black for heels. You will find its easier to pick what you want to wear when you keep your basic and fancy separately and control the amount of each category. Maybe easier for me because i dont keep up with fashion, only basic and classic suits me best. Have fun decluttering, Mark. :)

    I appreciate the video. My biggest clothing items I hang on to is socks and underwear and recently I threw out two trash bags full of socks and one of underwear. That added up to over 200 pairs of socks and 100 pairs of underwear. Then I donated 24 pairs of pants/shorts and 61 shirts. My clothing (outside of my work uniform) is now 5 pairs of pants 3 pairs of shorts and 24 shirts. I still do have about 30 pairs of socks and 30 pairs of underwear but they all match and don't have holes hahahaha.

    Thre is still a lot of things in your pile I can see that are excessive, of course that is my opinion. If you want to see what you really wear, when you do laundry every week mark the items that are still in the drawers. You will find you don't need more than 1 week's worth of clothing if you can do laundry every week- 2 if you do it every 2. Once you figure out what you don't wear by adding a slip of paper do that for 1 year. You will find that there are still clothes and items you still don't use.
    Being absent of everything isn't the key to enlightenment or anything, it is a perspective changing event. Changing your perspective can lead to enlightenment but only if you do it multiple times in your life. You've done great going from 450 items down to 130 items... you still have a good way to go. Good luck!
