People judge people buy their possessions. I am a minimalist and people think I am because I'm poor and can't afford lots of ornaments or I because I don't have 20 pairs of shoes etc. I was told recently that because I didn't have the latest iPhone it was because I was poor. I just smiled to myself and thought, I'm not poor I'm rich because I don't have these things i don't have credit either. Life is about finding your own path, not walking in the shadows of others.
I am not a minimalist as of yet, however I am working on it...I know how you feel about people think you're poor because you don't have the latest stuff. That is how some people feel about me. When I was buying this and that that is where my money was going to someone else making them rich now my money is going to me making me rich. Not rich with money, but rich with happiness, joy and peace...and on my way to being credit free. I now buy what I need.if I don't need I leave in the store.
Sameeeee I woke up today morning and realised my bed is taking too much space of my room and I don’t really sleep on my bed.. I sleep on the floor.. so I think I’m just going to sell it off 🙄🙂
Every person is different so everyone’s version of minimalism will be different :) the important thing is to make it work for you. It’s sad that people judge the way they do
I think people judge others to analyze their own actions. They are seeking to justify (to themselves) why they are, or are not, doing the same. This combined with hostility is evidence of their own internal struggle.
Thank you for this! I started my journey almost 6 years ago towards a minimal amount of things to be more frugal, budget minded and because I felt like I was drowning in stuff. I lived in 550 square feet with my husband because that's all we could afford and both had to much. Then I discovered the low waste movement and it all came together. Now I am almost at the point where I am content with what I have but I also am still purging a bit more. I just need to convince my family that instead of gifts we want experiences.
"Minimalism means ridding yourself of items that no longer serve you." I love this statement, thank you. Minimalism looks different for everyone, and I really dislike the judgmental attitude of some minimalists who try to tell other people they're not doing it right. I didn't seek out minimalism, I actually discovered it about myself. And it wasn't while I was decluttering, but when I was compulsively shopping. I realized how much I hate clutter and owning things that sit there and never get used or, if they're a non-functional item, don't even bring any joy. But it's always a journey and work in progress like you said, because that's just the nature of life, and that's perfectly fine.
I'm letting go of the clutter in stages, it's been an ongoing process for over a year now. What I do struggle with are family items & things I have been given even if they don't serve me . Your comment about being judges resonated, I'm holding back because I don't want to be judged by or upset my family.
I'm pleased you could relate to my judgement comment because this one is bigger than a lot of people realise. My mother has been very upset with me over the years for donating and re-gifting items which is a real shame. She sees it as a lack of respect instead of my need to simplify my life. But I suppose the bottom line is not everyone will understand or be happy with your decisions but as long as you are that's really the most important thing. Enjoy your journey :)
The Style Insider Thank you for your reply. It's taken a while but I am learning to be true to myself & other people sharing where they have also faced challenges really does help, makes it feel more part of normal life rather than me failing in some way.
Yes I think it's the human condition to blame ourselves and feel like we're failing whih is why I believe it's also important to try not to compare ourselves to others if possible too :)
Yes, I agree that family can be a huge problem with getting rid of things. Now that I'm old I say " I don't want stuff I'm a old lady". They would love me to house their memento's. Unfortunately my 90's plus Mother has always held her memento's as great value. So I understand how difficult they can make it. I am a firm believer in regifting what is given that isn't what you want but might serve someone else. Sale, give, donation, it's all good.
Linda M It did feel good when I got a letter from the charity I donated a lot of things to telling me how much my donated items have raised for them, inspiration to do a bit more. I'm trying to explain to Mum I am still keeping one or two really treasured items from each family member e.g, I'd never stop loving my grandma's engagement ring or sell that.
Latetly, minimalist have crossed the threshold, from serving you as a positive and calm position to trendy. You are the youtuber that has made the mist sence, since all others, not knowingly has made the progresison of minimalism a daunting task
One of the biggest things about minimalism is that it really is a way of thinking, as much as what you own/have. And if you live with other people you can only minimalize your own things. I joke that I'm a wanna-be minimalist but really because I have the mindset and am on my journey to optimal minalism I really already am one.
I’ve been slowly clearing all the spaces in my home & as soon as I’ve made a big dent I look back & can see I need to do more. Each time I go over it I feel better & better. I find it really hard letting things go. I feel almost like a hoarder but the chaos of so much stuff leaves me feeling unsettled & depressed. The thought of having to clean it & sort it & tidy constantly is draining. Especially with a child. I’ve found since emptying my bed room & only keeping what I need I feel so much lighter. I still have some sentimental items around but my space feels spacious now & I don’t feel like I’m squeezing into a room. I’m by no means finished & ive a long way to go till I’m happy with it. But I used to say my home doesn’t feel like home & filled it till it burst now I appreciate the clearer look & it’s so much easier for me to clean & takes less time & looks so much more pleasing to the eye.
When I first encountered minimalism lifestyle years ago, it honestly threw me off right away. It scared me because of the "rules" and "standards" to the extreme that I know there is no way I can keep up. It is only very recently that I have learned that it's a different journey for everyone. Thank you for your words! :) I think you are a really good person :) have a blessed life! ❤
I couldn't agree more. As you said minimalism is different to everyone, to me it is about keeping items that serve and items that you love. Its not a competition to see who has the least amount of stuff and I do like seeing homes that are decorated with a bit of personality, some are so sterile but if that is what the person wants and loves thats fine, who are we to judge.
I agree. It's not a competition to see who can live like a monk/nun! It's about finding joy and balence in what you truely need-who really needs 2+weeks worth of clothing?! Things you never use?! Most of us just need 7days worth of outfits and a pair of around the house clothes
Yes! Minimalism is about having systems in place to help you prioritize what is really important for you! Never said better! I'm going to start using that statement when I find myself in a conversation or situation about minimalism or why I chose No to not take something such as a freebie from someone....I no longer feel hostage to stuff. I feel more confident to be assertive with my time and space boundaries. Ty!
Agree with you on all of these points! Especially that labeling yourself “minimalist” doesn’t mean you’re subjecting yourself to a list of rules you abide by! Each person has the right to define their own lives and walk their own path!
I really enjoyed your advice. I'm becoming debt free in 2 months and want to sustain a different lifestyle by reducing clutter and all those "things" I haven't gotten rid of yet even though I've sold a lot to pay off my debt. I'm also wanting to better my mental and physical health turning 50. I feel like this is a new start on the next century of life!
We moved from a 2 bedroom penthouse to a 5th wheel RV. Amazing what you actually need. It is still difficult for me to declutter as I go on. But in the end it is so gratifying. Thank you for your videos, they are very helpful reminders of what to do on a daily basis.
YESS! Finally I find one person who described REAL life ministro minimalism the free way it should be! I agree on everything and I also could not be as minimalist with my closet as I can in my kitchen or other areas. Love your fashion common sense
That first point is SO important. I love my physical books, CDs, and DVDs. No I don’t want to “go digital”. Doesn’t mean that I can’t adopt the minimalist approach. A big thing I’ve had to overcome is: it’s ok to just throw things out. I was raised not to waste stuff and getting rid of things was really difficult until I just gave myself permission to throw things out.
My dad is a minimalist and thats what got me started in becoming one as well, so I'm very happy he's a minimalist too so that none of my family will judge me pretty much.
Perfectly agreed with all of these, especially point #2. My mom sometimes nags me about why I decided to donate/give away mostly my unused clothes that still look perfectly good/quite new.
Dea Ayesha Widyaswari Just tell her, "they still look good, just on somebody else." Clothes want to be WORN! If you're not wearing them somebody else should be. That's what I tell myself every time I do a closet purge. "These clothes want to be worn!"
I'm a graduate student and I have a lot of books. I've struggled with holding on to so many (I really don't have a lot though) but the "don't expect to be a minimalist across all areas" advice really helped me!
I'm so happy I ran across this video. After watching some other minimalist videos, I found them to be so impractical. The one I watched right before yours advocated to get rid of clothing items you haven't worn in 90 days with no thought given to seasonal items. I don't wear my heavy winter coat for 5-6 months out of the year, but I'm not getting rid of it after 90 days if it is still in good repair!
I moved from a warm sunny Arizona back to the Midwest. I made sure to keep my winter coat and a couple of sweaters I could rotate through. However if I don't use it after the years up(usually spring clean) I purge it. This winter I got a couple more sweater because I had forgotten how bitter cold it could be and the Arizona sweaters were to light weight.
Owning too much has been the cause of my stress... a lot of things= a lot of mess!! Every time I have vacations... I deep clean.. and each time it gets easier to let go of sentimental things or other things that I don't even look at and they're just taking up space... things don't give you memories... or letting them go doesn't mean you don't appreciate something... I'm letting go of many things I received as gifts but I don't like because they don't represent who I am... Amazing video and tips to motivate me to a healthy mind living style!! :)
I was born and raised poor and it taught me once being out of poverty i just enjoy living clutter free and clean so being a neat freak having clutter and unnecessary stuff that i have to be cleaning and organizing is just not worth my time...i also dont like having too many options....ive always been a simple person so living my life as simple as possible as always been my way yet all my life i was always judge d and critizied for it and yet now its a trendy thing...how the wheel turns...I just wish people would really think about this before doing anything...because then remorse kicks in and then they get the opposite effect....this isnt for everyone and no one should FEEL OBLIGATED to do such things if its not what they are into....some people love stuff and some people dont....everyone is different.....really great video thank you for sharing
Yesterday while I was unloading my donation items, the other people donating started asking if they could have some of the items :) I have been getting the crazy looks from people I know because 90% of the items I gave away were unopened and still had tags on them. The way I saw it, if I haven't used it in 7-years, then why am I still holding on to them.
Hi :) Your house is beautiful. Love the overall look and the light colors. I'm 70% decluttered, too many clothes, cosmetics and household cleaners left. The culprits for me: home decor taking up the flat surfaces I had 20 vases, glass blown figurines, souvenirs from airports, 200 magazines etc), indoor plants (dusting and changing the potting soil), fragrance things (candles + holders etc), curtains (3 or 4 spare ones in closet) and extra towels, table cloths, kitchen wear stuff. It's all out of my house now. I'm all about easier/faster cleaning and no time consuming useless items in my house.
Congratulations on your decluttering journey! I find that I only use 5 cleaning products : laundry detergent, dish soap, a soft scrub, multipurpose cleaner and peroxide. The multipurpose is for my flat surfaces :floors, walls, counter etc. The peroxide is for germs and the soft scrub for the toilet, tubs and sinks. I suspect you could just get away with the dish soap and peroxide but I cook with oils and fats so I prefer a bit more powerful cleaners . Hope this helps with your cleaner purge!
The Style Insider Well, I couldn't do it constantly, too overwhelmed: ''I will never be done'' thoughts and still keeping too much stuff the first couple of purges. It took about 2 months. It was very hard for me because I really didn't know what to keep and what not to keep. These videos are extremely helpful. Decluttering became so easy. Much appreciation and thanks. I continue to watch, maybe I'm missing something and of course I love the scenery (you & the home) 😍😍😍
Amanda H Yeah, you're right. Thanks for your advice. I gave the unopened cleaners to my family and friends. They use them. Then I used up the opened cleaners and now I use DIY ones. It's better and more refreshing.
The criticisms regarding the Minimalism journey/lifestyle joins the ever growing subject list. It’s truly disheartening. I began watching minimalist vlogs for encouragement and have found a few useful tips to help with my own journey. I don’t try to “mirror” what I watch. Let’s hope that soon the end will come regarding the “thumbs down” rating and the negative or hateful comments.
We are all different.. that is the beauty of life✌🏻I am on my own journey in becoming a minimalist and having a lighter and less stressful lifestyle 🙌🏻
I absolutely agree with everything you've said Leonie! I've learned so much about myself on my journey. Wish those people who judging could really truly feel what minimalism for them too.
You are being judged for having too much, too little. You might always get negative feedback, even for things you love. Also for the things you reveal are personal and authentic, character traits only your friends know. So I believe we all should follow our dream regardless of the loud critics around us. Thanks for sharing your ideas in your videos! !
I just get annoyed when people say to me "But you don't own anything white!!" I just don't enjoy that colour. I also really liked your comment on how it doesn't need to cover everything of your life
I love your video! All these facts are so true. I’m a baby minimalist right now so, I’m in the declutter stage, but I’m loving it more and more each day. It’s all about baby steps. ☺️
I've been watching minimalism videos for years now and this is by far one of the best videos I have seen! Thank you for your refreshing take on this topic!
I really enjoyed your video. I've seen all kinds of levels on minimalism with some so extreme that one man could pack everything he owned in a backpack. His apartment was empty. Too extreme for me. My idea of it is to only keep what you truly love around you and declutter the rest. It does make life easier when your home is not jam packed with items. It's a lot easier to keep it clean when you don't have so much crap to dust around. My big weakness is hardback books. I have at least a couple hundred and when you own a 3000 square foot house it's easy to find a place to put them. But I don't need them all so I have been slowly weeding them out and taking what I don't want to the local Library. I figure let someone else enjoy them.
This is so spot on as I walk so slowly through the process of getting where my ideal minimalist life will one day be. It’s a hard process with the health issues I deal with but I am and will get their. With or without support. Bottom line is we aren’t responsible for someone else’s feelings about our lives. It’s non of our business really how others feel about us. Our best life is just that. Ours !!
I am giving things away and throw stuff out a lot and it really feels good! But SOME of it gets replaced with things that make my life (or ours as a family) easier. So unused clutter leaves, and things that serve me come in. What stopped coming is "things that I want" because tomorrow I might want something else and the wanted item becomes clutter while making me feel bad vec it emptied my bank account.
I work retail six days a week so I need clothes and shoes, as opposed to someone who works from home and a couple of sweat pants will do, but I avoid hoarding, if I buy something because it is cute but I can’t see myself wearing it often in the next few years I simply return it
I found it quite ironic that it's the fancy stylish lady who really hit the nail with the definition of minimalism. There's seems to be a wide misconception on what minimalism is because people only see the bits and pieces from social media (mostly of bare no color living space 😅). Great video, very glad to have stumbled upon it.
Great points and so well-said especially point 2, speaking from personal experience , I come from a family of hoarders , they didn’t understand why I always say no to gifts they want to give to me( they especially think I am being picky and criticising their tastes 😞) they also don’t understand why I take pleasure in a simplified room and nagged me on it
Diane Wong Hoarders do always feel like they are being judged. Especially by tidy minimalists. When people ask what I want for gifts I try to explain that I'd rather be given experiences than "things." A gift card for a nice restaurant, or to the movies is always appreciated. Even a gift card for Lowe's or Home Depot is always welcome. (Something is always needing to be fixed or replaced if you're a home owner).
You certainly cleared up some of my misconceptions. Moving is definitely helping me get rid of so much clutter and lead a clearer life style, but as you pointed out not every area of my life will be light. I still enjoy having a lot of clothes! 😂
Loved this video as always. I feel that it comes down to is becoming more mindful of what we have and how we're using it in our lives. Once I started watching minimalism vlogs and reading more about it I've started really taking a pause and buying less and reusing more of what we already have on hand.
Yes I love the fact it involves buying less, reusing more and reducing our footprint. I'm far from perfect but I'm now a much more conscious consumer :)
I agree with you. Minimalism has no standard. Everyone has their own opinion about minimalism. I used to live in very little stuff when i was little because of our family can't afford to buy unnecessary stuff. As I grew older i became more aware of what I have and bought. Since I get married I took minimalism lifestyle seriously. But I didn't get rid of anything or downsizing the entire house. My husband loves to read books and collects good books. He still can have them without feeling its too much. Because having to have those books make him happy and bring him relaxation.
Nice to meet you! For me, sentimental things are the hardest... I am scared of being a hoarder... I find a little relief because I do get rid of things, responsibly, almost every day! Yes, I love donating!
Honestly it is so true that people can be so judgmental when you decide to do something that is not common in today's society, which is "buy buy buy". But your true friends will accept your journey, just remember that ;)
I am considering a lifestyle of semi minimalism. I have ADD and I am disorganized and overwhelmed with my clutter. I can’t see my self living a bare bones white walled minimalist lifestyle, but less would be more in my life. I love antique items. I have several restoration projects on my list. And not letting a vintage piece of furniture get lost in the clutter seems to me to be one reason for a more minimal lifestyle. And to me, that is another and better version of materialism... honoring the material items you do own that have true value, like items with history, items that are well crafted, well built.
Perfect video. Concise and very well structured. As someone looking to jump into a more minimalist lifestyle your video has definitely assisted me. Thank you.
I adore your videos. You’ve inspired me to start using more earth friendly products like metal straws and to not shop just to shop. Thank you for sharing your wonderful mind with us ❤️
A fine line exists between "judging"and something a lot of us were tought as children witch is "you only get one chance to make a first impression" anyway...I think you're right about the vegan thing.
nice video! i remember when i first saw a minimalist video on youtube and i immediately thought, i have to declutter!!!now it is funny watching videos of 'so called minimalists' and their hauls...say what??? i really think people misuse that word. most are maximalists who just need to make space for the next haul!!!i have clothes i wear from 20 years ago and i am glad i kept them!you are right.. it means different things to different people. people who judge others really need a youtube video 'if you can't say somthing nice, then zip it!'
After going though a hurricane and losing my roof. I've realized you don't need much. I was already on the de-cluttering path since even before the storm and now after still doing so. Would love to own less. Ganna get there.
You have beautiful dog in video! Anyway I decided few months ago to start with minimalistic approach and I wasn't as successful as I wanted so I decided today again to do it more properly. Fingers crossed. Thanks.
Love, love, love this video! I like you, know that there are some areas in my life where I will never be minimal and that works for me. I tell people all the time that minimalism is different for everyone.
Great video with very valid points! Thank you for sharing. I have been decluttering for 5 weeks now and the process is different each time I go back to an area sometimes I’m ready let things go a on the second or third pass.
Great view on the subject. I agree with the previous comment. You have put it in the best terms that I've seen. Thanks for sharing and don't let those negative comments steal your joy.
Lots of great points! btw I think we need to get rid of the term (and stigma) around re-gifting. To me, re-gifting means you thoughtlessly pass on a mediocre gift to someone else because you couldn't be bothered finding them something good. But if I take something I used to treasure, or something lovely that was given to me but isn't my thing, and give it to someone I know will LOVE it, that's just gifting. I think that can be a more valuable, thoughtful gift than going out and buying something. I love to give my things to people I know will love them and use them more than I do!
Point no 2 really hit home for me because I'm in the middle of decluttering process and those are the kind of comments that I got regularly from my family member. Nice video, though :)
I was worried that minimalism wasn't an option for me because of my disability and require durable medical equipment, and the idea that we need to down size our home that would not work for us. Because we finally have a beautiful home of our own...we are a family of two and my daughter is an artist I wouldn't dream of taking that away from her... Your video was very helpful I learned a lot about how this might look and work in our lives. Thank You
Yay! I'm thrilled you enjoyed this video. I'm really hot on the fact that minimalism can look very different for everyone. My wardrobe is far from minimal but that works for me. Good luck with your minimalism journey :)
It really is a high. I'm thinking about breaking into my neighbor's house and getting rid of their stuff when I reach the end of my own "journey"! Just kidding. But seriously, I feel lighter and less annoyed by so much visual noise. My home is "peaceful" now. I haven't enjoyed it in so long until now. AND... I know where everything I do love/ need is and am able to enjoy them more! I gotta stop looking at these motivating videos before I end up living under a tree with nothing (and likely enjoying it). Thank you for your time and inspiration.
This was awesome, thank you for sharing this! I most definitely had my preconceived notions of what minimalism looks like and perhaps that is why I have had a difficult time starting
Hi...I just came across about your video MINIMALISM.... I am so happy because you're video is not complcated in many aspect...my husband and me live in a two story house here in the Philippines...this is a landed property which we owned....my problem is about my daughter & her husband and 3 kids who lives next to our house which is at the back of our house...I know it is only a small house...they keep on buying things so in the end they cannot store it in their house...my problem is our living room became their stock room😣 their stuffs are all over our living room....they have a house & lot but they don't live there....oh if you can only see our living room full of their stuffs☹ they hoard all kinds of things...they don't like to give the old stuffs away☹.....my husband and me are minimalist...thank you for your video...it will help me a lot to persuade them to get rid of all they're uneccesary stuffs
What a great video, I had a really good time watching it. The things you mention are quite relatable to me, and I love the way you presented them and your positive presence on camera. Thanks for posting! Love, Vera from Simple Happy Zen
I want to live minimally because I have really bad asthma and when I have a really messy room or a lot of things hanging on my wall, heaps of things on my bed it collects heaps of dusts and makes me sick and also triggers my asthma. So I’ll be practising minimalism soon ☺️
I have watched tons of video's about minimalism do's and don't but minimalism is something you have to carve out for yourself for what fits your lifestyle. The most extreme I have come across was a man who could pack everything he owned into one backpack. His rented apartment was bare. I found it interesting but way too extreme for me.
Minimalism to me is having all needs met & choosing a few wants that bring the most joy. It does look different for each person. It doesn't mean not having but avoiding waste or excess. Like instead of having excess of 20+ cars parked in front of house that nobody drives, have 1 nice realiable car.
Great video 👍 all good tips for minamalism. I have been a minamalist for almost a year. Your videos have helped me in my journey. The kitchen declutter was my fav. Keep making videos!
It works provided you can buy a new thing when the one thing you are using quickly fades. Stuff gets used up faster and you don't have a spare when you have given everything away.

I can relate...you are happy and healthy and it's an amazing feeling... I love minimalism and people who practise it are amazing beings... keep it up
I am not a minimalist as of yet, however I am working on it...I know how you feel about people think you're poor because you don't have the latest stuff. That is how some people feel about me. When I was buying this and that that is where my money was going to someone else making them rich now my money is going to me making me rich. Not rich with money, but rich with happiness, joy and peace...and on my way to being credit free. I now buy what I need.if I don't need I leave in the store.
And what if You are poor? :D It’s a crime?
*I think I get a high from giving stuff away, seriously. After a stressful day or week, I tend to go into my room "ok, what am I gonna give away?"*
That's so funny - I feel exactly the same LOL
Same here! Whenever I watch these videos, I can't wait to start decluttering. There are always something to throw away. It's an amazing feeling 😁
Holy!!! I think we're the same person!!!
Thats really cool!!
It’s sad that people judge the way they do
Yes I agree! Which is why I try really hard not to judge anyone myself - it's not a constructive way to live (in my opinion) :)
People judge though nobody can ever be considered perfect. It's crazy. Everyone has unique traits and that's alright
I think people judge others to analyze their own actions. They are seeking to justify (to themselves) why they are, or are not, doing the same. This combined with hostility is evidence of their own internal struggle.
Yes, and whether I'm "really" a minimalist doesn't matter.
I'm decluttering through attrition -- as things wear out or are used up, I don't replace what I don't want. I try hard not to waste anything, though.
That's a great way of doing it :)
That's more my approach... I HATE waste!
People will judge you no matter what you do. Who cares.
Yep absolutly... their probably not happy themselves lol
To (mis)quote something i heard long ago: They will call us fools whether or not we dance, so we might as well dance.
I've decided to stop caring what other people think.
I hope that's ok with everyone
:p
Exactly
Like how I'm judging that milky tea?
Thank you for this! I started my journey almost 6 years ago towards a minimal amount of things to be more frugal, budget minded and because I felt like I was drowning in stuff.
I love your videos. I hate “stuff” around the place. I think any object that comes into the home needs to have a purpose, place or a plan.
One of the biggest things about minimalism is that it really is a way of thinking, as much as what you own/have. And if you live with other people you can only minimalize your own things. I joke that I'm a wanna-be minimalist but really because I have the mindset and am on my journey to optimal minalism I really already am one.
Yes you are right - it really is very much a way of thinking/living :)
Yes exactly! I think it's that judgement and competitiveness that winds me up the most :( Pretty silly hey?
Lovely video thankyou so much love the music
Jackie Sandberg well said!
I agree. It's not a competition to see who can live like a monk/nun! It's about finding joy and balence in what you truely need-who really needs 2+weeks worth of clothing?! Things you never use?! Most of us just need 7days worth of outfits and a pair of around the house clothes
I feel more discriminated against for being vegan than a minimalist. Go figure...
Ty!
So pleased you got something out of my video. I love how you describe feeling "hostage" to stuff - so true :)
Sounds great - keep up the good work :)
We moved from a 2 bedroom penthouse to a 5th wheel RV. Amazing what you actually need. It is still difficult for me to declutter as I go on. But in the end it is so gratifying.
Thank you for your videos, they are very helpful reminders of what to do on a daily basis.
Thanks for watching Nancy :)
YESS! Finally I find one person who described REAL life ministro minimalism the free way it should be! I agree on everything and I also could not be as minimalist with my closet as I can in my kitchen or other areas. Love your fashion common sense
Your video opened me up to the decluttering of relationships. Thanks!
Dea Ayesha Widyaswari my Mum is exactly the same 😩
Dea Ayesha Widyaswari
Just tell her, "they still look good, just on somebody else." Clothes want to be WORN!
Yes that sounds pretty extreme and not especially practical at all :(
I just found out why! This person lives in Southern California. They only have 1 season. :)
Ahhh that makes sense - totally different hey?
I moved from a warm sunny Arizona back to the Midwest. I made sure to keep my winter coat and a couple of sweaters I could rotate through. However if I don't use it after the years up(usually spring clean) I purge it. This winter I got a couple more sweater because I had forgotten how bitter cold it could be and the Arizona sweaters were to light weight.
Yes. In most cases, you should wait a year, so you can get a chance to go through all the seasons.
Yes I couldn't agree more. They obviously weren't right for you for whatever reason - good on you for donating them so someone else can enjoy them :)
Rosemary Williams so they will sell you new with tags stuff on eBay.
My wife gave alot of items that were of value but she said it like planting seeds for harvest to live with a lot & living simple & happy life...!
Wow! Sounds like you've done an amazing job. That feeling of decluttering is so great right? :)
The Style Insider You are right! It's a great feeling! Now, I enjoy decluttering.
January Waterchild I agree - well said 👍🏻
We are all different.. that is the beauty of life✌🏻I am on my own journey in becoming a minimalist and having a lighter and less stressful lifestyle 🙌🏻
Lighter and less stressful is a big appeal for me that's for sure :)
I absolutely agree with everything you've said Leonie! I've learned so much about myself on my journey. Wish those people who judging could really truly feel what minimalism for them too.
Yes I agree :)
Every single one of these made a whole lot of sense to me!! Happy to have found this short and sweet video!!
Agreed. Continue YOUR idea of minimalism. Don't feel bad about those negative comments. They have nothing to good to share.
Thank you :)
I've been watching minimalism videos for years now and this is by far one of the best videos I have seen! Thank you for your refreshing take on this topic!
Thank you so much! That's very kind :)
Sounds like we are on a similar page when it comes to minimalism. I think you've got the right idea with your books too :)
Great! Thank you!
Yes, often other people put unrealistic expectations on us!
Ours !!
Yes I agree :)
You're absolutely right, we just have too much STUFF! I love giving things away too xx
She Said Yes such a great feeling right? 😘
I work retail six days a week so I need clothes and shoes, as opposed to someone who works from home and a couple of sweat pants will do, but I avoid hoarding, if I buy something because it is cute but I can’t see myself wearing it often in the next few years I simply return it
Yes that makes perfect sense to me :)
I have so many empty shelves! Thanks for sharing. I hope people understand how different minimalism can be for everyone. ☺️
Yes I think it's important to understand that one size doesn't fit all when it comes to leading a minimalist lifestyle :)
Thank you 😊
Great points and so well-said especially point 2, speaking from personal experience , I come from a family of hoarders , they didn’t understand why I always say no to gifts they want to give to me( they especially think I am being picky and criticising their tastes 😞) they also don’t understand why I take pleasure in a simplified room and nagged me on it
That's very tricky :(
Diane Wong
Hoarders do always feel like they are being judged.
Moving is the perfect time to declutter and minimise. Good luck and thanks for taking the time to comment :)
I agree the sentimental stuff is most definitely the hardest to part with :)
Taking small steps is key. I'm not a minimalist yet, but hope to be one day. I'm starting small because it can be overwhelming.
Yep I agree it can be overwhelming so starting small is a great idea :)
Thank you.
Yay! That's great to hear - so pleased you enjoyed it :)
I adore your videos. You’ve inspired me to start using more earth friendly products like metal straws and to not shop just to shop. Thank you for sharing your wonderful mind with us ❤️
robin drew thank YOU for making my day with your lovely comment 😘
Great video 😊
For me minimalism is the act of being intentional with my thoughts, possessions and actions ❤️
That makes perfect sense to me - thanks for sharing :)
That's a clever & well thought out approach to the minimalist idea. I like it very much and thank you for sharing!
Yes I think most of us are too judgemental of others and I totally agree with the "if you can't say something nice, then zip it" LOL :)
I agree😉😎
Wonderful video, very straight to the point. Thank you for sharing. I just started with minimalism and I'm happy i came across your video.
Thanks for watching :)
After going though a hurricane and losing my roof. I've realized you don't need much. I was already on the de-cluttering path since even before the storm and now after still doing so. Would love to own less. Ganna get there.
OMG! That sounds horrific - sorry to hear you went through this :)
You have beautiful dog in video! Anyway I decided few months ago to start with minimalistic approach and I wasn't as successful as I wanted so I decided today again to do it more properly. Fingers crossed. Thanks.
People must find their own lane, we are all unique, fearfully & wonderfully made, I can't be anybody but me! Yes!
So true!
Love, love, love this video! I like you, know that there are some areas in my life where I will never be minimal and that works for me. I tell people all the time that minimalism is different for everyone.
Couldn't agree more - thanks for watching :)
I'm in love with the snake plant in the background. Plants can make a home look amazing, but I won't buy one for fear they are harboring insects.
I am doing it slowly. Your video was very helpful and nonjudgemental. Looking forward to future videos. Thank you!😀😀😀
Great stuff! And yes there's no rush to change everything overnight - I always think it's about enjoying the journey anyway. Have fun :)
I think you have a very rounded and healthy insight on this. Thank you
Thanks so much Debbie - I really appreciate that :)
yes it happens to me. The surroundings judge on why I throw away sentimental things. I said I keep what I need period.
Minimalism is simply the minimal amount of things that make your life complete. It can't be the same for everyone.
You got a point there, i think it's like that with bodies no-one knows your body better than yourself. You just have to work with the mirror...
Great video with very valid points! Thank you for sharing. I have been decluttering for 5 weeks now and the process is different each time I go back to an area sometimes I’m ready let things go a on the second or third pass.
Wow, such a breath of fresh air! Thanks so much for your common sense advice. I can do this!
Yay!
Great view on the subject. I agree with the previous comment. You have put it in the best terms that I've seen. Thanks for sharing and don't let those negative comments steal your joy.
Thanks for your lovely message and thankfully the good comments (like yours) far outweigh the negative ones :)
Love your accent! People are so weird. Everyone should do what they like and be happy with what they have or don't have.
Great content on minimalism! Such a (true) list of some of this hidden parts of a minimalist journey. Love it.
Thank you!
Point no 2 really hit home for me because I'm in the middle of decluttering process and those are the kind of comments that I got regularly from my family member.
Nice video, though :)
Yes sadly those kind of comments can be really discouraging but luckily they don't come all the time :)
Finally someone who practices minimalism without talking about veganism!
I'm slowly becoming minimalist. I'm using what I have and not buying more. Till I'm empty of any item. Then I'll buy if I need it .
I'm a natural hoarder. I always struggle and I always have to declutter on a monthly base. Otherwise my house would fill soon...
Yes I also have to declutter regularly 🤦♀️
Yes I definitely think it looks different for everyone :)
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to leave such a lovely comment :)
I agree 💯 to minimalism.....too much stuff, it makes you sublicate.... and eratible....
Clean and green sounds great 👌👍.....
Well said 🎉🎉 and done with love and respect ✊. Brilliant
What a great video, I had a really good time watching it. The things you mention are quite relatable to me, and I love the way you presented them and your positive presence on camera. Thanks for posting! Love, Vera from Simple Happy Zen
Your lovely, kind comment has made day - thank you :)
white and black decor with few evergreen house plants that most minimalists tend to stick to.
This was so refreshing! Thank you!!
Yay! So glad you like it :)
I want to live minimally because I have really bad asthma and when I have a really messy room or a lot of things hanging on my wall, heaps of things on my bed it collects heaps of dusts and makes me sick and also triggers my asthma. So I’ll be practising minimalism soon ☺️
Your minimalism is very sophisticated and high standard
I have watched tons of video's about minimalism do's and don't but minimalism is something you have to carve out for yourself for what fits your lifestyle. The most extreme I have come across was a man who could pack everything he owned into one backpack. His rented apartment was bare. I found it interesting but way too extreme for me.
Leonie I really like your videos. Lots of inspiration.
Thank you so much :)
When anyone questions my semi-minimalism, I just say I'm travelling light. It really is a process. I intend to travel even lighter.
Thanks for you kind words and encouragement :)
As soon as I heard your voice I subscribed 😁 Love it.
I'm a minimalist newbie so I'll be checking out your videos. Thanks for all the posts
Ahh thank you! So funny cause I hear my own voice and think eww but I suppose that's pretty normal :)
Amen dear ☝️🥰 This is how I understood it once I learnt abt minimalism
It works provided you can buy a new thing when the one thing you are using quickly fades. Stuff gets used up faster and you don't have a spare when you have given everything away.
