When I was teaching, I started a “walk and talk” time for kids who were feeling disconnected at recess. It was so successful that parents started taking walks with their children (1 at a time) where they could organically connect together as they moved their bodies. Parents learned the ups and downs of their child’s life, and it was a safe place for kids to talk because their bodies were moving and they didn’t need to have eye contact while they talked. So many families have said this was such a bonus time that have continued for years! ❤

What a beautiful thing to do for a shy child-and there are always several who would love a safe place to be not alone at unstructured times like recess and lunch! Thank you for thinking of that! We made a 'welcome' table at lunch and sat with the kids there, inviting kids to join us who seemed uncertain where to go or were withdrawn. You could see the relief.

Minimalism has saved me so much money!! I donated, recycled, gifted most of what I owned after I saw you years ago. Since then, I've been tempted to buy cute stuff--I'm only human after all!--but then I remember that I've had similar items already and got rid of them. "Don't be an idiot and re-buy the same stuff" is what I tell myself. That enables me to walk away from temptation every single time! Thanks Minimalism!

Hi Dawn, I remember finding your videos several years ago and thinking, I could NEVER live in that minimal environment. It’s so Bare! At the time, I was downsizing two households into one. My family was grown and gone and I had years of inventory accumulated. Fast forward to today - my home is more manageable and organized. We travel in an RV and currently are spending 6 weeks in these smaller quarters. And I’ve just realized that everything that I have learned from you is now making my life and lifestyle more enjoyable. At 75 years young, I am living my wildest dreams and feeling more empowered than any other season of my life. Thank YOUUU❣❣ Kasia

Point 4 - YES! I decluttered so much over this past 1.5 years, but I had this annoying feeling like something was missing, like I just couldn't put my finger on it. But it's this point, only having out/keeping what I actually USE. I have finally parted ways with jewellery, perfumes, beauty products, new underwear and even socks, that I just never use. My bedroom and bathroom now only has what I use RIGHT NOW and next to nothing else. I did it all on Sunday in one day and ugh it felt so good. I'm soooo satisfied!!!

It’d repeat until I had to rewash because worn got mixed with clean. Now I fold/hang as soon as dryer goes off. No more wrinkled clothes. Bed stays clear. Everyone puts their pile away.

There is nothing more unkempt than walking into our bedroom and seeing our bed not made!! It totally is a must. Someone needs to address the problem of very little kids with cell phones. Recently I've seen kids holding their milk or juice bottle in one hand while watching a video on mama's phone with the other! Just look around when you are out shopping and almost every tiny kid you see is glued to a cell phone!!! It's the new babysitter - put the kid in a shopping-cart and hand them the phone!! Mothers need to think about how this is changing the way a baby's brain develops - it starts with us adults, we need to model good phone behavior - Dawn thanks for encouraging ladies to stop starting their day by scrolling on a phone!!

Love your ideas, but we can agree to disagree about bedmaking, laundry, and dishes. 😄 Leaving the bed unmade makes me feel unsettled every time I walk in and out of the room. It looks so messy that way, and looks so pretty when it is done. It only takes 2 minutes - 100% worth it to me.
I do get dressed in the morning but don't wear shoes inside the house, only house slippers. I also do dishes 1x per day (after dinner) and laundry 1x per week (on the weekend). This works so much better for me than trying to do a load here or there. But I also don't have kids at home, and I can see where that might not work for everyone.
This is why I appreciate your oft-repeated theme to do what works for you - it's going to be different for each of us. 🥰

As someone who enjoys sewing my own clothes, what has saved me in Wisconsin winters is a uniform of boring, classic pants (jeans & 2 dark neutrals) with enough tops in colors I like that (a) go with all three bottoms and (b) allow me to wash a full load of them once a week on average with enough extra that my laundry day can be shifted to the weekend. I have been doing this since my oldest was 15 and assigned his laundry day, while my youngest is now 29 and a mother herself with her own washing machine. My primary warmest winter jacket is also one of those 2 dark neutral colors. I use the container concept to control my cherished collection of sweaters (includes wearable heirlooms and souvenirs), sweatshirts, & jackets. Hope this helps someone. Please leave a short reply if it does. 😊

Regarding meal planning, I SO recommend freezing meals. Last year, I noticed that we were ordering delivery a lot because we would just run out of time to cook dinner. But then we also frequently threw out leftovers. I got some Souper Cubes and they've been incredible. They're silicone molds that come in 1/2 cup, 1 cup, and 2 cup sizes--so, essentially, individual-sized portions.
Now, when I do cook, I make extra and freeze it. I started with soup and lasagna and now I freeze anything I can. I even prep and freeze ingredients like mirepoix and grated ginger and garlic to make cooking easier. We have a freezer full of individual portions of home-cooked meals that are quick and easy to heat up. It makes weeknights SO MUCH EASIER! Bonus: if we can't agree on what to eat, then everybody can pick a different thing. It makes lunches a breeze, too!

When I was your age and a working mom we often did not make the beds. However, now that we are at home and retired I make the bed everyday. I can’t imagine walking through my bedroom multiple times a day and staring at an unmade bed. It takes all of 60 seconds and totally transforms that room. You often discuss your bedroom being a sanctuary and peaceful place. That is not going to happen in a bedroom with an unmade bed.

But when you make your bed, I feel that my bedroom looks more calmer and yes, whenever I go to the bedroom, it just gives me the satisfaction of ' Ah this is one room that I don't have anyone messing anything up '. My kids make their beds every morning and they just love it..!!

Minimalism in my life enables me to help my friends and family. I go to Walmart once a month cuz I refuse to stop walking despite my disability. If I don't have a car I ride with a friend. My bestie has everything delivered and is physically incapable of keeping up with her deliveries, packaging, incontinent dog...Also, being retired I can be available to others who are lonely or just need someone to listen ❤ The list goes on!😊

I started my decluttering journey Summer of 2023. I grew up in a mostly minimalist household, but my spouse grew up with pack rats and my kiddo is the only grandchild on both sides and the only niece/nephew on both sides. We are still not close to minimalists (yet!) but it's an ongoing journey and I'm hoping that we'll be there in the next year or so. I've gotten rid of probably 50% of my things and my spouse and kid have downsized as well. Thank you for the tips and the videos!

That time buffer is something I do every single day and for every planned errand. I swear it makes the biggest mental difference in your stress level. Also in the morning I have found that 10 minutes makes a huge difference in how much traffic is on the road and how aggressively they are driving (I’m in the Atlanta area, if you know, you know 😂). I’d rather leave early and mosey than leave with just enough time and have to worry!

I like to do at least a load of laundry every day. I have a clothes line in my garage so I don’t have to worry about rain or anything like that. Saves the clothes from being damaged in the dryer. What makes it easier for me to put away laundry is that I dry shirts in their hangers. They go from clothesline to closet, easy.

The reason I advocate making the bed is just cause a bed can easily be 30% to 80% of the space in the bedroom. So if you make it that’s usually half your room in order. And that’s kind of a win in my books. However I can’t tuck sheets worth a darn so I just make it good enough

  • @jomoney465

yes, you are a warm autumn and once you know what your " season " is, shopping is so much easier and less time consuming. I power right past all those bright prints that are not in my color choices. Now everything in my closet matches. And I find that I gravitate toward those same colors when decorating my home and buying throw pillows and bedspreads, etc. I highly recommend finding out what your season is if you want to simplify your clothing choices of what stays and what comes in with future purchases.

When I was a stay-at-home mom with five children, a simplified meal plan was the only way I could financially and physically feed my family. Sunday=big meal with roasted meat/mashed potatoes or rice/veggies; Monday=leftovers with roasted meat (turkey or chicken casserole, shepherd’s pie, chicken pot pie, etc); Tuesday=soup & sandwich or chili & cornbread (often the soup was made from turkey or chicken bones left over from Sunday’s meal); Wednesday=pasta; Thursday=salad bar or loaded potatoes; Friday=pizza (homemade, pizzeria, or even homemade on English muffins); Saturday=hamburgers or hotdogs with homemade fries. No one ever went hungry!

On one hand I’m so proud of how far we have come, on the other, how can’t even see a light at the end of the tunnel yet (and you adjust so fast to the less clutter that it doesn’t seem to help at all haha I still feel soooo cluttered!) I don’t want to be decluttering forever…but I also know that we didn’t get here overnight so it’s going to be a process to minimise it all….i just want to simultaneously have a massssss week long purge and be done, but reality has us needing to give time to our kids and sports and …the rest 😜 so we end up doing a day here and there and it feels like we’ll never finish.

I have tried a get ready bin, but have found smaller bins (like a hair bin, a makeup bin, etc) to be more successful for me. But I wonder if I was trying to keep things that don't belong in my get ready bin!

Yes, to 3 things every day. In our house it’s laundry, trash and dishes. It’s easy for my husband to help manage/do vs me telling him what needs to be done. It’s also a safety net against doing all of the laundry on Sundays and then you get sick on that day.

Lots of great ideas! I find that a walk alone every day helps me to declutter my brain. My husband and I often walk together, but that is different. As for "Survival Meals," I call these 9-1-1 meals. Frozen pizza is always on hand. I can make taco soup in the crock pot in the morning to be ready when we walk in at supper time. I also have a couple favorites from the frozen food department at Trader Joe's.

I am a mom of 3 toddlers at the moment. I'm am trying to "take back my house". One thing that I am utilizing for our consistent grocery order is the Walmart app. I created a list of items needed to make our 2 week rotation of meals. When I need to get groceries I simply go to my account and add the list to my shopping cart for pick up. While this sounds silly. The past 3 months have been so much easier for me. It has removed so much mental loaf. I don't have to decide what we are going to have, I don't have to sit down and make a list each time, and then I don't have to decide what to cook. I just pull out a meat and go from there. I can just add other items we need at the time. I'm not sure if anyone else utilizes this or even knew it was a thing. I also have a list of "household items" like toothpaste, soaps, laundry detergent. That was I don't have to search for anything I just go to the list and add what it needed at the moment. It has also helped us keep a consistent grocery bill!

I so loved your blond hair you can see in the older footage you used here. Are you ever going to color it blond again?
One of the things I do is cook for 2 days. So we always eat the same thing twice a week. I cook from scratch. I don't use canned soup or other packages. I only use canned tomatoes, the rest is made from scratch. So I am sure we always have healthy veggies and fruits. My meals take me around 30 to 45 minutes to make.
I have minimalised so much that to clean the livingroom, kitchen, hallway and toilet it only takes me 30 minutes. I do have a Roomba vacuumcleaner, that helps a lot. Same for upstairs, 2 bedrooms and a bathroom only takes me 30 minutes. And I only do that once a week. We don't have children in the house anymore, which helps a lot with keeping it clean.
We always empty our tables and put everything in the dishwasher when we go to sleep. So when you wake up you start with a clean slate.
The rest to keep up with is the garden. During winter it doesn't take any time at all, because everything is dead or dying. For summer I have transformed my garden into a paradise for birds with trees and flowers, which don't need maintanance.
The other days of the week I do some deepcleaning here and there, but I do have a lot of spare time on my hands to do whatever I want. I like to scrapbook and drawing, also knitting and crocheting, so it gives me time to do those things.
I also like to travel, so each year I go to France for 2 months and when I come back I don't have a load of stuff to do, because it is so managable.

All the bedrooms are upstairs so if we don't make the beds it doesn't bother anyone visually. But if we're doing laundry - which is almost every day - the bed is where the clean laundry goes to be folded so I try to remember to spread out my comforter (after first hanging it over the bed frame while I get ready to air out). This is all the bedmaking I've done for years. I tried getting the bedspread and everything but it just wasn't my thing.

The shoes bit is a tough thing for me, because shoes are something I only wear if I'm outside. The idea of wearing shoes inside a house is just . . . odd. What I've started doing in lieu of that is putting on an anklet (or on a day like today when it is cold -- it got down into the 50s overnight and may not get out of the 60s!!!) putting on a pair of socks. But then I don't feel like I'm obligated to leave the house. :)

I heard in a parenting conference.... Can't remember who said it to give the speaker credit. ( It may have been Dr Sharon Saline... I tried to look it up and that is likley. ) Wait. W. A. I. T. Why am I talking? It is a good reminder when you are listening to your kids to actually listen. Not jump in fix. Let them talk. You asking about your son made me think of that tip. Could be a good practice. I am always trying to help around here.... And the teens don't necessarily want that. They need the space to let it out and share their opinions.... Not listen to mine. 🤷‍♀️ Even if I am right. 😜
