HOW TO GIVE AWAY ALL YOUR BOOKS

  • I love books. I love the way they feel. I love the way they look perched up on my wall. The problem is I don’t read books. And it turns out that most people don't either. And books take space.
    ► Get Marie Kondo's book: amzn.to/2joP1Qw (but only if you really have to! )
    According to a YouGov survey carried out on a sample of 2,059 adults, shortness of time for reading was a problem for 29% of respondents, 40% preferred to do something else and 26% said they "didn't enjoy reading very much". (source TheGuardian.com) Meaning it’s most likely that you haven’t read more than 1 or 2 books in the past six months.
    Part two of my decluttering series, today we will take a look at what you can do to give away the books you won't read or that aren't bringing you any joy. Sounds wanky, I know. But trust me. It works.
    Find out how I managed to get rid of more than 70% of all my books.

    I went from a floor to ceiling, wall to wall built in bookcase. Moving books were easily 12 -15 boxes. I scaled down to 60 books and a library card. I stopped the madness.

      Mark Leruste haha there needs to be a "use at own risk" warning on library cards. Nah, I'm good with returning. But normal I hit the 25 cent and dollar selves rather than check out books. This is my problem.

    I ❤️ books and would never let any of them go. Just over 4 years ago, I went through them and went down from just over 800 to 17. The 17 were either ones that I couldn't rebuy in ebook format or ones that were really special to me. Yes, I have got some of them back in ebook form but very few of them. And, I can honestly say that I'm happier because I got rid of them, they were a burden that I didn't realize I was carrying.

      This is what I need to do, but simply don't even know where to start. I've estimated I must have a good 1000+ books (I wish I was kidding) and desperately need the storage room, so I need to downsize. How did you go about it? Not sure I can do the "all in one big pile" with my collection. Also, what did you end up doing with the ones you got rid of?

    Awesome books can be found at your nearest Goodwill Outlet Store, 50 cents for hardback and 25 cents for paperbacks. I say buy more books! Read them and share them with others. I got rid of my other junk and kept my books, so I can expand my mind! *Who needs to drink/drug when you can blow your mind with awesome writers/writing - which is my favorite "art form".

    I just order books second hand, oftentimes in a bad condition.
    If I like a book, I sell the bad copy and buy a better one. If I don't, I just sell or give away the bad copy and don't feel bad for having bought a book I didn't like.
    Also, for the unread books I try to keep them in the range from 10-25 books so I don't get overwhelmed.

    • @markleruste

    I'm a librarians daughter and grew up in the library. I would go into bookstores and come home with 5 to 10 books I knew the library didn't have. Then I would go to the library and bring home another 10 books. Since I knew the library books were due in 2 weeks I would read chunks of each book and return them on time. The books I had bought however, languished on the shelf collecting dust because there wasn't a "due date" on them.

    I got rid of all my books. My husband and son have a bunch still. I only buy kindle books and I subscribe to a monthly magazine online service. I can't read a regular book. I need the good lighting on my kindle and iPad. I had serious cataract surgery at 42 year old. It's very rare to have them at a young age so I'm very careful not to read in bad lighting. And most books are too small of print. It's nice to carry around my kindle and i feel clutter free. I live in a 2k square feet townhouse. I'm trying to be a minimalist but I'm doing it slowly since I want it to be a lifestyle and not a fad. Most rooms are fully purged but my garage is half done and then it's more just maintaining it. I've donated over 100 trash bags full of stuff to charities in the past three months. It's a great feeling owning less. I now can concentrate on reading my kindle everyday instead of purging stuff. But when something new comes in something old has to go. That's my rule.

    My loft is full of books. I created shelves in the eaves of my loft. I actually don't have enough space to put all my books out as I have so many. My wife is always going on about getting rid of them. As I get older I do understand I will not be able to read all of them. So starting the process and doing a bit every weekend. When I die I don't want whoever is left to have to deal with them.

    When I did an initial book inventory a few months before we moved, I had something like 1050 or more (the actual first count included some of my husband's). I sold some on Amazon, had give away events for my friends and then donated the remainder to charity shops and the local, volunteer run library.
    I actually read dozens of books per year and what I gave away I had read or otherwise finished with the majority. Many classic novels were replaced on Kindle for a snip too. I now have 461 and am actively working through the rest - I have 9 on the go just now!. Aiming for 400 by the end of the year and hoping for under 250 long term, maybe less. I must go now - I have reading to do!!!! 😂

    books is what I've been tackling for so long. hearing you say you're unsure of the effects seeing those unread books may have on you is really exactly what I needed to hear. I love old books and I want to save them all, watch my kids thumb through them, look at them on a shelf, but they take up a very large amount of space in my home and my attic storage. Also I'm constantly feeling like I have lots to "do" like read those books or use my closet full of arts and crafts things. thank you for this video!

      You are so welcome Alexandria, and I know the feeling! I was holding myself back by the amount of books i hadn't read. Thinking things like "surely, I'm not ready to do x if I haven't read this book about it!". And so it was so liberating to give them away. Not easy, but liberating. Regarding your kids playing wit them, I so get it. And it also reminds me of a quote I read once: "Collect memories, not things."

    • @markleruste
      @markleruste  7 лет назад +14

      That would be in an idea world a great way to go through them. Problem is, what I realised is that every time someone recommended a book, I bought one. And before you know it I had a gazillion books on my shelves. The more books I had, the more I had to read. The harder it was to get started. And the more I thought I needed to read them, the less ready I felt to take action. That's when I thought it was probably best to start over and just go one book at a time. Which has worked great for me. Everyone has their own style of course and I don't pretend to hold the truth for all. And I hope this will hope some that like me could benefit from my experience. Good luck with your process!

    Hi Mark, Sorry, but you are most certainly not a book LOVER! I agree, I too love the the way books feel and how they look. And whenever possible I will chose the hardcover over the paperback. And even the hardcover books, I prefer to be in the superior binding of sewn signatures! Now the reason that I am teasing you about not being a book lover, is that I have enough books in my modestly sized home to open a lending library! I have not yet counted them, but to "guesstimate", I think I have around 1,000 or more. Now I am going to do my very best to assess them one by one and my goal in reduction is NOT a numerical one, but rather a reduction of books that are no longer of interest to me. Wish me luck. Cheers and ALOHA from Hawaii.

    Books have been my struggle! For my New Year's resolution, I challenged myself to read a book a week, and I've found that I very, very rarely keep the ones I've read. I'm almost ashamed to say that in a collection of about 200+ books, i've only read 38 novels, and a handful of reference books. But it really is about that persuit of knowledge- you feel you have to hold onto those books to feel you have the knowledge. It's definitely getting easier.

    • @markleruste
      @markleruste  8 лет назад

      So with you on that one Holly, when I had a ton of books I was always surrounded by knowledge. And add to that I was surrounded by knowledge I had not yet acquired, and therefore felt like I wasn't "complete" until I read those books. Problem is, every week I'd get different recommendations for a new book! It's a never ending story... Since then I pick up one book, read it, (or at least try!) and then give it to someone or give it to a charity shop. Don't beat yourself up and if here's something you may want to play with. If you could only take 5 of your books with you on a desert island, which ones' would they be?

    If there was a way that if i donated books to my local or main city library and 100% KNEW they were going to stay there I would. But here in an undisclosed town in South Yorkshire where stuff tends to go walkies i'm discouraged from doing so...in fact, i'm discouraged from doing anything...
    And not to be too negative, but books, dvds, video games and listening to music (whichever format you choose) are the vast majority of the time just chewing gum for the mind and even chewing gum for the bank account. How much absolute SHITE have we handed over hard earned money for in the past? That's the deeper thought process which minimalism and decluttering is not going to solve in a weekend of intense drudgery and tedium!

    • @markleruste

      It’s true, we do really waste huge amounts of money on, as you say, ‘chewing gum for the mind’.
      And we may, in time, get terribly bored without this constant diet of ‘stuff’.
      But how about thinking about the balance of how hard and long we work for transient chewing gum, to cutting back on how much we work, so we only buy what we really need or want?
      The choice is indeed ours.

    Your going to have to go through this all over again if your aiming for 100. You might need to give yourself a break on this number. Marie Kondo is great but she doesn't tackle the psychology of why we collect and what the underlying issue is. Maybe during your next run you should do the MIns game. I got rid of 530 items doing the game. Can't wait to do it again. Konmari is a great way to start but commit to always looking at the piles (especially when they get smaller) and getting rid of at least a third. Good luck

    Are the Books behind you those you Gas lend to others and gave back to them after your sorting process? I just wondered. Myself I reduced from about 450 books (including e-books, but excluding audiobooks) to 60 books. BUT since then I did add 7 books. But I did get more choosey and at least two of them can be circulated in my family.😇

      Congrats on winding down the amount of books you have! I'm not sure I understand your question as I don't know what "you Gas lend to others" means. But the short answer is that at the end of the video that was the amount of books I had left. All the rest I gave away to charity. I've since given away more books :)

      Yeah sorry, I had written the first comment on my i-Pod and he does not speak english and so turns every english word into german, regardless of sense.
      What I meant was: the books behind you, to your left (for the viewer to the right, behind the sacks), were those some, that you had lend to others, then got back for your book cleaning and were about to return to the people you had lent (?) them to?. The front wants you had left, those in the sacks you gave away, but those on the small heap? Sorry, verry inquisitiv. :-)

    • @markleruste
      @markleruste  8 лет назад

      No problem! I see what you mean, all those books were books I wanted to give to people. Basically I either give all my stuff to charity, or if there's a particular item (say book, pair of shoes, etc) that I know someone would love to have, I give it to them as a gift instead.

      Sounds like you've started the journey to declutter, so go you! Don't worry about the mountain ahead, every little step helps.

    Why would I want to do that?
    Space is just empty.
    A book is a doorway to another world.

      Well in that case, you probably don't want to create more space for you in your life if you see space as emptiness. What I love about the fact of creating more space is that it allows me to have more bandwidth to think things through and I instantly become more creative. But that's just me. You need to find what works for you!

    so HOW do you give them away? This whole video is about selecting your favorite self help books, not about giving it all away.. I want to see you try to sell these garbage bags to your friends for £0
