VW Air Injection Pump: amzn.to/2uRuaym
If you check engine light is on with any of these engine codes then in this video I will show you one of the most common faults when it comes to air injection codes and how to check if your air pump is working. I have personally seen my fair share.

1) Thank you. I am sure your clearly-made video has helped a good number of people.
2) What I dislike about my Actron scanner is that it shows error codes only -- no emission test readiness monitors, no pending codes. I have seen other cheapo pocket scanners that do check the monitors, as well. Either way, I use my Ross-Tech VCDS (VAG-COM) dongle and software for in-depth diagnosis.
3) My own secondary air injection system failure check engine light was caused by a carbon-fouled combi valve and its small solenoid control valve. I could have sped up my diagnosis by checking for vacuum at the combi valve's control port during cold start.
I bought an autel cheap one and it tells me IM readiness, smog check, codes, live data, freeze frame data, etc
Fixing this 1999 Eurovan, I discovered the air blower was worn completely out. it's throwing a P0411 and that won't pass my county emissions inspection. Brushes and bearings shot. It's not made to be repaired, of course. The vacuum pilot valve and air injection valve bench-tested good, and no hoses were leaking although the blower output hose was crispy and broke when I removed it. This was fixed easily by using a short section of heater hose and clamps. This one is more expensive for an exact fit unit. I found a new one on-line for $130. Some OEM units are prices at $700. Pretty high for something that's no more complex than a small vacuum cleaner!
I got a 2001 vw beetle with the code p04011,ordered one from amazon, easy fix!!
ones you supply with ground and 12v, does the pump should stay on all the time you hold the power and ground??
mine ones i do that blowout my power pro fuse, even with 2 different new pumps..
is it possible to know exactly where to find this secondary air pump on a 01' vw jetta.
Do newer models have this problem as well?
I wish I'd watched your video earlier. I ordered the Ancel VD 700 diagnostic system for VW, Audi for twice the price of the one you recommend because I thought I needed it to be able to clear a VW or Audi code. I'm intimidated by the tool and working through to replace parts. I'm not automotive handy but VW charged me $200 to tell me I needed to pay $1400 to fix the car and clear the code to pass emissions test in Maryland. They say it's the secondary air injection system sensor which is $60 part but in Maryland they don't actually test the emissions of the car. If the check engine light is on it's an automatic fail. Fingers crossed I can work through it as the 2009 VW rabbit only has 110K miles and runs great. Tough for me to dig into replacing parts when it's working great before I touch it.
I have a Ford Galaxy 2.8 V6 and cannot even locate the pump ! Any ideas where it will be ?
My 98 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro 30v it was experiencing a problem with the secondary air injection system short and Sterling codes related to that and a tank valve code. It would start up after I would wiggle the pump a couple times and then when I was driving sometimes out of nowhere it would shut off and it would die slow I'd try to give it gas but it was nonresponsive. I replace the pump and now it's just turning over and will not start up. Same codes don't know what to do at this moment is there anything that could cause my engine to not start? I heard that there is an actuator that's part of the secondary air injection system that could be the blame of that, what are your thoughts?
Ok, 07 2.5 wabbit 5spd stick.
2ndary air pump is running like a vacuum full-time.
I found the hoses to the pump compromised, replaced both hoses.
Replaced pump, replaced solenoid valve, and swapped the 100amp fuses to see if that was the issue. I even replaced the MAP sensor under the throttle body. I cleaned the throttle body while I was at it.
I have looked for this SAI sensor but have never found it, it's supposed to be on one of the tubes, but there's nothing. Also, I am the one and only owner.
I did find a video about the SAI and MAP sensors being physically identical. However, they are not one has to be sure that the right part number is in the right location.
Any help with this situation is greatly appreciated.
If the air pump has water, wouldn’t it mean that the valves are stuck open? Just curious I’ve never dealt with a secondary air injection system and I’m about to check one out.
Thank you.
Fantastic...
The car jerks when driving constant speed at highway. No problem when accelerating. Gives the fault code P0411 but can it cause this? Or is it possible that MAF sensor is faulty but does not give the fault code? I just unplugged the sensor and car still turned on like no effect at all. Didn't drive it, though.
Could this or the bad air injection fuse cause the car to not crank or start?
Awesome video, pump can be also rebuild its not actually difficult, I've made video on how to.
I would like to know where it is placed and its connections
When I test my pump with 12v battery the wires I use want to weld to the pump...pump hulls ass tho but have to hurry and rip wires off...normal???
can you show us on how to get the secondary air injection pump/ valve out of a 1998 Volkswagen beetle
Pleaseee, I need that too
Does this work for the vr6 vw Jetta 2000
ustacıım ben bu motoru değiştim yine p0410 yanıyot arac pejo 407 baska neyden yapar acaba
My pump with direct 12v it started just for 2-3 seconds then off. Found 5 at a Iceland pull all same problems!
Where is the fuse on a 2007 vw jetta for the secondary air pump?
I got a P04011 code change the secondary injection pump an the air pump converter an im still getting the same brought it to dealer an they couldn't fix it in fact they gave the vehicle back an it runs worse then when i gave it to them. If anybody has any ideas of what I should do
Why is my code P1413 and different from urs? But says it’s the secondary air injection. I have a 2000 Ford Mustang.
If I empty the water out, will that work?
Do they run all the time. When the car is running??
No, only on cold start up for a short time
Hello do you have a video on how to remove that pump? Looks like I have to remove the radiator is there any easier way?
Thank you
I don't have a video on that at the moment but depending on the model I believe you can get at it the easiest from underneath by removing the plastic shid plate.
@@FlatRateMechanic OK I'll try ; it is a 06 rabbit 2.5
@@zipote38 Haven't done one on a rabbit so not sure.
@@FlatRateMechanic thank you anyway.
Hay bro just replaced mine 03 Ford Focus any idea we’re the fuse is located!
I have tgis code also p0411 i replace pump and egr valve. And fuse and ideas
Did you ever fix? I did same thing. Code still came back
I got P02444 code .... any ideas ?
Hey mate, I have a 9c Beetle, replaced air pump, because of this code and water in pump.
Still get DTC p0411 up. Is the EGR valve repairable? Or do I need to replace it as well?
Had the code only come up again after 2-3 start warm up cycles. Upon further inspection, I found the vacuum hose to the EGR valve had perished and broken off, fixed that and cleared code again.
No more code and air pump stays on for longer in warm up mode. All fixed 😄
@@MrConspark by egr valve are you saying the check valve? What hose was broken on yours?
@@DownAndDirtyOffRoad The EGR - Exhaust Recirculation Valve (maybe called check valve) The vacuum supply hose from the vacuum solenoid was broken off.
Why would my 03 golf only got 105 km/h and only rev 3100 rpm
So my mechanic wrote this code in my receipt but did nothing to air pump etc. Only spark plugs n coil. It fixed my issue but i think my was misfire. Idk why he wrote these codes
My pump runs but it keeps failing the readiness code ???
I change the pump and solenoid valve. Still comes ? Any ideas
Possibly secondary air injection valve, easy to install yourself and a new one should run around $160... but im no expert make sure that's what it is before replacing
Make sure you clear your codes after repairs or the old codes will still be present
@@dylanmcgough9202 secondary pump solenoid is the same as the valve, solenoid sits on top of the solenoid, and it's all in one unit.
My battery kept going dead, and today while I walked past my Tahoe I heard a humming and realized it was my air pump running. Does that mean it's gone bad?
No, Not necessarily. This things are usually controlled by a relay which is in itself controlled by your engine computer. More than likely your relay is stuck closed esp if your pump is running with the key out of the ignition.
Cadilladic converter lmaoooo
Can a hole in the catalytic converter cause the code to pop up as well? The machanic put a new pump in and it didnt fix the issue.
Check the secondary air valve for exhaust gas. Remove the hose coming from the pump at the valve and if the valve is sooty with exhaust dirt it is not closing and will ruin your new pump.
@@mattmeg00 excellent
I replaced the pump, the map sensor, the tubes, and the solenoid/valve on my 2.5 . I even swapped the 100 amp relays in the relay/fuse compartment... nothing. The vacuum cleaner still runs full time.
is the switch that triggers the pump stuck on?
@@JohnKaufmann what switch?
Stuck valve
Where is the fuse for the air inj. pump??
It's a crap shoot depending on year and model. VW models seem to change the fuse setup every year. The owner's manual is the best source of info if you have it.
You didn't tell us where the fuse was for that car
Hey I have a 2005 Mercedes Benz S430 RWD it is has P0410 code I had the secondary air pump and replay replace still says same code after driving it for couple of days ? What could it be any ideas
could be the secondary air check valve/solenoid. if that gets stuck open condensation from the exhaust will find its way into the air pump and eventually cause it to fail. find out if the solenoid is functioning.
My P0411 code came up after a new battery was installed. I erased the code , it popped up once again. The only thing directly affected is the remote start function. For now ill just manually start the car like i have all my life. Maybe the code will finally go away? Im not putting any large amount of money to keep it running right now. Who knows whats coming next. Relax be happy.
When testing if pump works doe's it matter what side is ground and power
Not neisserial. It will just run backwards.
How serious is this when there is a check engine as a result of this ?
It does not matter.
Pollute it a little more than usual but not something that takes damage from it.
I drive under 1000 miles a year and it makes no difference. My mileage exempts me from state emission inspection. My car is old and so am I. Its a matter of time which one dies first.
My air pump works fine and no water. Now what?
end up finding out the problem?
Catalytic converter not cadillatic cadillac has nothing to do with it.
Wah Wah Wah so dirty - never do this way
All talk no show.😢
I appreciate the info, but you should keep dirty gloves and dirty parts outside the vehicle. It's just basic respect for your client's vehicles.
From one tech to another. Grow up you pansy f*****
Why in the world would you put a greasy ass pump on the center console? Why would you get in the car with those greasy gloves? Where are the floor mats and the plastic for the seat? Those things cost 3 cents per car at most, you're literally fixing one problem and causing 3 more.
