  • This is as much as I can do in the seven measly days of the Steam Next Fest. They were enjoyable days though, as I harshly judged every demo that dared stray into my path, and I have separated the wheat from the chaff. Here they are in up to a whole minute of their naked glory.

Yes, there are only 19, but I figured I removed the one for Pacific Drive because I'm going to be reviewing it and I want to save all of the good and funny words for that. Just pretend one of those other games has good and funny words with it.

These reviews are quite enjoyable. Long enough to arouse curiosity without wasting time. And i like your little puns.

Pepper Grinder looks great. Reminds me of one of the powers/mechanics in Yoku's Island Express, which is one of the best games to come out in in the last few years.

I picked up Yoku's Island Express a long time ago and never got around to playing it. I should get back to it if I ever get the time.

@@AbbreviatedReviews It is so, so good! I didn't expect it at all. Who knew a puzzle-platform-pinball-metroidvania was what the world needed!?

Good list! I never seem to find the time to play these, even though I love the idea of Next Fest. Seems like a great way to support smaller developers on a platform where the rich get richer.

From the game I also played, I agree they were all worth it. My favorite from the fest was Xeno Runners - high speed jetsuit flying with Unreal 5 graphics.

I was impressed with Beyond Hanwell for merging SCPs, mid-apocalyptic dystopia, and Condemned. The 2nd biggest survival horror innovation here is that the key for some doors was inside you all along... specifically inside your shoe as you can kick some stubborn locks, or just sprint and get up to ramming speed. The biggest is the reasonably intuitive sprint letting you pivot in whatever cardinal direction feels best to nope out when something very wrong inevitably starts chasing you.
Duck Detective made me laugh, and that's really hard to do with mere text delivery. But they saved the best one-liners for the loading screens, so your mileage may vary.
The least-likely wishlist had to be Diceomancer, because deckbuilding roguelites normally form a very slay-worthy spire, but this one has really charming cartoon animation for everything and a cheat mechanic where you can replace any number on your screen with a d6. Enemy's going to hit you for 15? Not anymore!
And I was charmed enough by Crypt Custodian's homage to top-down zelda games that I even picked up their already finished Islets homage to metroidvanias. Partly because reviews said it was on the easy side of platforming, and my fine motor skills have aged about as well as my spine.
Hollow Body for the "I liked Silent Hill" folks and it seems to be a solo dev. Their ability to do solo what took a team in the old days is a real testament to the progress of game creation.
Hauntii was very cute, but I think my desire for completion will leave me incredibly frustrated, as there was one puzzle in the demo that I could not crack. I could *see* the collectible, I figured out how far up it was, even managed to move through it a few times by bringing a tree-climbing bug over. Which apparently was not the correct solution.
The rest... either have been covered or I landed on a "wait for review".

I did try out Diceomancer because I thought the art style looked cool, but it felt a little flat for me. I think I burnt myself out on those style of games a little bit and need something more dynamic to get me to commit to it.
Crypt Custodian looks interesting though. It reminds me a bit of Death's Door from the trailer, which was a really fun game also mirroring Zelda to some degree.

@@AbbreviatedReviews Yeah, It wasn't until near the end of the run when I realized I could have used the cheat mechanic much more aggressively to, like, not die, that it really clicked.
Like, changing the crossbow's "reload 1" to "reload 4" and maybe I could have given myself longer buffs or bigger buffs. But I didn't think of it.
No idea if it's enough to carry a full game, but it was an odd mention in another channel I follow, since I was sure they also were very burnt out on the genre... and they were recommending it. (Was it SkillUp's vid? Gods, this has been a long week.)

My hype for Star Trucker is unhealthy. Part of me knows I shouldn't be *that* hyped, and yet it feels like a game I've waited my whole life for.

It's certainly different than I anticipated, but it's not bad. Just not exactly what I assumed going in.

Hey, I really love your content. I like that it is fast paced and witty and I usually don't have a problem following along but I did in this video. In future videos covering multiple games you may want to consider putting a small break when transitioning from one game to another. I think that would have helped me follow along. I love you either way, keep up the great work.

    • @AbbreviatedReviews
      @AbbreviatedReviews  4 месяца назад +1

I have recently tried to pick up the pacing a little in my videos lately, cutting down pauses and such, but I suppose it probably doesn't work as well when I'm transitioning between 20 games.

I showed this to my friend and he suggested I would have been able to follow it better if the title of the game was displayed in the corner or something. @@AbbreviatedReviews

Try the new game of Trese Brothers called Cyber Knights: Flashpoint - it's a rare genre of HEIST-style turn based tactics. And the devs are ULTIMATELY cool dudes releasing updates (and i mean updates - not lazy fixes) by 3 or more EACH week. It's already the 56th one in just several months. You won't regret it if you dig turn-based games and good game design

Gotta shout out Rollin' Rascal, yet another indie title showing up Sonic Team at their own game. Looks super promising, even if it's in early alpha. Gotta chuck some money at the Kickstarter

The title or the capsule image really give necessary value to what that game is because I don't recall ever even seeing it, and if I did I'm not sure I'd have clicked it. But now I'm going to check it out.

I didn't play any of these, though I did play and enjoy some others! All of their demos are still live too.
[Aeruta] should appeal to fans of Recettear's shopkeeping + adventuring gameplay, despite being different genres of both shopkeeping and adventuring.
[Never Grave: The Witch and the Curse] was an enjoyable rougevania which taught me that apparently rougevania is a genre now.
[Yohane the Parhelion - Numazu in the Mirage - ] is a Love Live parody spin-off game which is heavily inspired by Slay the Spire but focuses on being enjoyable instead of trying a bunch of weird stuff like most Spire-likes. I tried it out mainly since "parhelion" is one of my favorite words and found it really enjoyed even though I'm not familiar with Love Live. The full game released yesterday!

I'm assuming a "roguevania" is like Dead Cells, which I can see why that has gotten more popular.
