It's my dream to own a Cinelens ...and when it's vintage like the H 44-2 58 f2 OMG @Mark you are making me dream right away from Tunisia....Amazing video like always
Hi, Mark. I'm another fan of vintage lenses, so it didn't take long for me to discover your channel. I love your videos. They're usually of the right length - not too brief as to leave me wanting for more, not too meandering and dragged-out as to get boring - and I like your humour and style of delivery. Also, the various text animations and transitions are tasteful and well executed. I know, you're a professional in this field so I feel like I'm stating the obvious. But still, I think one always likes to receive feedback that's a bit more detailed than a thumbs-up or a 'great video' comment. I'm definitely subscribing and now I guess I have a bit of material of yours to catch up with, haha. Cheers, and keep up the great work! -Rick
Hi Riccardo thanks mate, it's weird i've been working in the industry for 20 years but youtube is a completely different beast. I felt like I had to re-learn a bunch of things to apply to this format, it's VERY VERY different. The core is the same, don't waste peoples time if you can, I try to show and give a lot in my videos to ensure that at the very least the craft/lens/info is being demonstrated or communicated. I cut about 3 mins out of this one because I felt like ya, it's just too long and it really impacts the pacing of things. Appreciate your feedback and your time mate, all the best in the giveaway if you entered and stay safe out there.
They're pretty great as well, hhow they managed to put so many blades into some of their designs while the other guys were putting in 6 is beyond me. That Juipter specifically is an amazing value lens.
Nice one @Mark you're killing it. I love the image from these lenses, I guess am gonna take a step in this direction. These 3 lenses should be right about all I need. Thank you.
Thanks Alec, take a look at the 28 as potential option as well. it's got a crazy close MINfocusing distance and while not THAT fast at 3.5 I do feel like you can do more with a lens with a closer focusing distance on a wide angle. My CZ 35mm has a super close min focus and it's got to be one of the most versatile lenses I have. But that 37 is golden ,really glad they got the min focusing distance down from the 0.7 meters.
God you're amazing, I want you to blow up omg. Your Cinematography is probably the best I've seen on youtube. So tasteful, it follows your dialogue so well. Everything is so effective. Keep going and itll happen, your content is amazing. I'd love to hear you beyond gear stuff, cause youre rad.
Wow what a nice thing to say, thank you. Just try to have fun with it, if it happens cool, but I’m happy with the freedom to be able to do whatever I feel like in this space. I know this stuff is super niche. Thanks again for the words of support!
Ya medium is a whole different world, need to get there I think. Crop on my super 35 stuff looks good I think. 2.2 MFT not bad either just have to deal with that massive crop. These on a super 35 though, golden

Sorry I missed the premiere, was out with the fam. Mark, This video was next level. Holy sh*t. Really REALLY enjoyed it. These refurbished and rehoused Soviet Sisters are awesome. You did an awesome job of showcasing each of them. Now to find the German Brothers...
The Soviet Sisters along with Ze German Misters lol. They pretend to get along, but there's some serious hidden and passive hostility there. Rightly so as history would have it. Hope you enjoyed the fam time mate, most important!
Gotta share what we love mate, those guys are doing way more than I ever could for people like us who enjoy this stuff. I wouldn't even know where to begin with their contribution.
Thanks once again for a inspiring video on those great Russian lenses. I bought the Helios 44m, very happy but the price of the 40m 85mm is getting more expensive with popularity little bit like the Mir 1 but in reality actually quite cheap compared to new modern lenses. I can see why they are so popular though. Looking forward to the next video. Like the intro. Well done.
The 44M was what made me fall in love with soviet lenses. I had given it away so the re-housed 44-2 was the next logical choice (since I use these mostly for video)...plus I figured it would make an interesting video as well. Got it, used it, fell i love AGAIN so got the set (mostly because I was convinced on the functionality for my commercial stuff). 85mm tend to be on the more expensive side, even the older ones. The Tak 85, the Helios 85 etc both fetch quite a price for them online it seems.
Nice video - great production quality - like always. Great set of lenses. I own these three lenses in their original form and all three are a real pleasure to use - so far you are in vintage lenses (like I am). Over time I sold most of my modern glass and replaced it with vintage lenses. Although modern lenses have reached a stunning level of quality I prefer the unique character and charm of my vintage lenses (with all their deficiencies). Over time I got so much into using a manual focus that I feel a sort of disconnected from the shooting process when auto-focus in the play. Using vintage lenses triggers a lot of positive feelings (on my side) where modern lenses are for me just neutral tools.
Same story here mate, i only have 3 modern lenses left out of the 7 i had, out of those three i only really use the 24mm L 1.4 EF lens and even that's been cut back since I started shooting these videos full manual.
That was so good I had to pause it and put it on the TV from the beginning. Fantastic video Mark I’m afraid when you publish a new video as there is a direct correlation to Aj’s spending on glass.
Awesome! I always wanted to get a Helios but they are always sold by companies called "goodguy/nice lens" out of Russia. Winning this would be fantastic!
They're so mass produced they're probably everywhere, but I can see why you would be skeptical. ALWAYS be suspicious on the internet that's my motto. Good luck in the giveaway mate, this lens ain't not joke.
I have all these lenses in their original old M42 mount versions. They work pretty great for photography too! I had the 85mm and 58mm and felt pressured into buying the 37mm after I started watching your channel... ok, it was less "pressure" and more like a handy excuse. Thanks :-)
@@MarkHoltze oh for sure! I am about to order my set and I am on the fence of if I want to put in the bokeh mod. I like the raw intended look of the lenses but I also like anamorphic lol. I have seen people complain that the mod reduces bokeh and subject isolation especially with the Mir. Have you found it to drastically affect the original image of the lens?
@@MarkHoltze lol, it really shows. Can’t blame you. Ironglass did a great job there, plus I like that it’s like extending the historyof the lenses in another form. Excellent video as always. Love the Mil Mi-24 shots - although had I of known I could have hooked you up with some people I know that still have one...but I've already said too much.
Technical question. I have the same follow focus as you ( tilta) and also a fairly robust tripod (E image G6). However when I pull focus, there especially on close up objects, I always notice that little tiny movement, that little camera shake when I start to pull focus that I can never get rid off. For reference I am using Pocket 6K and cinema lens irix 45mm. Do you encounter the same issue and if so, how do you solve it. What lens support are you using or any suggestion!
@@MarkHoltze yeah I did. The internal focusing would be cool. I have a Helios, that I’ve modded with the help of my 3D printer, but these metal rehousings look so much better ahha
Internal being worked on actually, but makes it more expensive it’s quite a process to build that into the lens. Compromises as well, for both really. Mods do the job, of course this looks cooler but overkill unless your work flow needs it. :)
:O Are you saying that they're rehousing some canon fd's? I have an amazingly sharp Canon FD 50mm f1.4 SSC and i'd love to get it rehoused. Not that it's bad or anything, the focus ring is starting to get a little stiff
Mark, thank you for the excellent and entertaining review! I love learning about the history and nuances of the lenses you present. And great cinematic work, too! Were these IronGlass's standard or amber internal coloring? I think I picked up on the flares being amber but wanted to make sure. Also, were there any other bells on this set to be aware of when ordering like the stainless pl mounts, etc. Thank you!
Thanks Jason. The flares are natural to the original lens. No flare mods were added, just the anamorphic bokeh mod which has no impact on flares. You can get those Amber or blue flares with the flare mod tho.
Mark I gotta say I'm enjoying the fact that you are showing more and more of your Goofy personality. (Coming from a fellow Goofball). In addition the quality and fun level in your videos is better and better. Keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing what you have in store for us next!!! Goofball out.
Ya it’s tricky. It pissed some people off, but also enhances the authenticity of a video. I dont care if it pissed people off as much as just starting to feel more comfortable in front of camera to a degree. Goofballs united! 🙃
Weird question: were you using the nucleus nano or nucleus m follow focus? I picked up the nano but I’m worried it won’t have enough power to pull focus for Cine lenses without the d-tap cable. Also great video as always, congrats on the 30k!!
thanks mate. It pulls focus on these just fine, but i can't speak to some other cine lenses. Some are nightly weighted and others are TOO much IMHO. If doing loads of commercial work, I would go with the M just so you don't have to worry about it. I shoot with vintage lenses mostly and focus is always perfect with this.
Great video! I feel like you are my long lost brother 🤣 my husband dont get my sense of humour and goofiness lol. I heard about that 3 lenses and Helios and Jupiter are on my wish list. I am now rocking my Fujinon 55mm f2.2 for video and photos. Wide open the bubble bokeh is incredible 👌🙂 I entered the competition because who does not want Helios in their collection 😍
I'm dying to try a Fujinon lens! They're not as easy to find around these parts, I could go to ebay for sure, but i always try to source local first! :) Who DOESN"T want a Helios! Good luck!!!
@@MarkHoltze yep!I got mine from ebay, as I didnt find anything locally (car boots, photo stores). I paid £12. Its a good lens, it has its charm. Wide open is rather soft but that is the character I think.
Hey I see you have the condor blue shoulder rig with your S1H. Could you make a video about it? I thinking to get the rig but it would be great to get some feedback from a owner first. Thanks!
Will do mate. It’s great. I was looking for a long time for one and settled on this. Small rig and tilta were contenders but I’m all about supporting the smaller guys if their products are competitive. Glad I did. But ya will do a video on it soon.
This one might be the one that convinces you like it did me lol. They're not going anywhere I don't think, if anything the longer you go the more options I suspect you will have. They just dropped some internal focusing info yesterday and Canon FD's are looking to be the next set of re-housed they're going for. SO options, they're a good thing. Good luck mate!
Thanks mate, sorry about that. I tend to like every lens i use because i'm just so into them, but there's definitely a point of diminishing returns. These lenses are highly specialized for sure, definitely not (for everyone). The core of them is inspiring I find, you could def do the same things with the naked versions of these and still produce great stuff.
Hi mate, it's good, I mean people have mixed reviews about a lot of things so it's tricky. I wish IronGlass made a PL to L as I love their Sony PL to E, but the Sigma PL to L is $699 and this was $150 so lol. It works well for me. It's solid, I wish it had the metal moulds for easier grip when swapping, but again...NOT $699 lol. Happy with it though.

Hello, I'm purchasing vintage lenses for my Fujifilm XT-20, I found a medium format lens option (Bayonet 60 Pentacon 6), there is some restriction on using a lens that was designed for medium format in an aps-c as is the XT -20? does it impact images / functioning? Congratulations on the great content on the channel! Thank you so much.
My first vintage lens is a takumar and then hear alot of good reviews on helios i would love to have this on my arsenal, i will be taking a photography and video class soon.
I would personally never spend the money to rehouse a lens for dedicated long term use on a DSLR, but you can get EF mounts as an option so if you’re rehousing these Soviet lenses it should work.
I hope I win it since I don’t have a Helios 44! But aside from that what is your opinion on the Jupiter 9 vs the Helios 40? The price difference is significantly more for the 40 But they seem so similar I’m not sure if I should splurge on it or not.
Is it bad that I only need the Jupiter 9 to complete my set. love these lenses. also yes, I did enter as well. Side note my super takumar cinemod set is complete, I want to take some comparison shots to yours to compare the SMC takumars to super takumars. If you are ok for that.
Fine by me mate. Not sure you’ll see a definitive difference. I wasn’t able to really apart from the flair colour highlighting. But I’m not doing scientific :)
@@MarkHoltze Cheers, that's what I am feeling too, the SMC feels a bit like a marketing push. Made a nice little sequence on insta in my garden to test out my new camera body. Love the look too much to care. but thought it would be an interesting to compare.
Hey Mark Which one would be the best version to buy? Mir-1 silver M39 (early version). Mir-1 black M42 (most common) Mir-1A with t-mount (uncommon); Mir-1B M42 (VOMZ). Mir-1V
Would you be interested in selling your set? Of course I totally understand selling them for a small profit as IronGlasses 6 month wait is a bit out of touch for those of us who could use them now... Thanks in advance for the swift response, -Kevin aka Archie
Hi Archie, unfortunately like you i had to wait for these as well. I do have gigs lined up using them so I can't. it's max 6 months, usually comes in a bit under, but ya, I had to wait 4 months when I ordered mine. I've said it before and i'll say it again, worth it.
Damn Mark, you just raised the bar even further with this video! Your story telling for gear with that production quality is in my opinion unique on RUclips! I simply love your videos, although I won’t ever use such a set 😅 Will rewatch this now again, that intro is so god damn good! Did you shot everything yourself (one man show)?
@@MarkHoltze please do 🙏 I think I would not be the only one being interested for the breakdown of that frequence 😉 If I could support you in some way, just let me know. I would also like to provide you some value, not only demanding from you.
Hi Mark! Thank you for your great videos and teaching us about specific lenses! I picked up the trio from ironglass (cine modded lenses not rehoused) and love them so far! 37, 58 & 85. When I film broll I tend to use my sigma 24-70 dgdn on my s1h. Is there zoom lens that you recommend that might fit with my soviet trio? The sigma looks great but the manual focusing isnt that great and I do not want to buy the lumix 24-70. THanks!!
The voigtlander 36-82 that ancient optics rehoused would be the true companion to a soviet set. Apart from that it’d a bit tricky. I would go for a cinema parfocal if I had my choice but it’s going to be hard to find a zoom lens that matches these. The 36-82 might be the perfect match….all else might fail ;)
I'm a sucker for anamorphic bokeh (oval shape) but I want as clean an image as I can get so opted for no flares. Just my personal preference though. I find doing flares in post give me a bit more control and they're easy to track with aFx. That way on or off, my choice depending on the creative direction we're going for. What are you learning towards?
@@MarkHoltze thanks ! Im interested in buying the kit for client work but and im inlove with anamorphic, but i Also love the clean look and bokeh that the cine lens is giving, maybe with the givaway lens ill know better what i like 🙈🤪 hahah
I have been following you since I found your video on the Simmod-ND filter which is quite a long time ago. Grats on the 30k! I would kill for that Helios-lens
@@MarkHoltze Thank you! Can you take a look at vintage Minolta lenses one day? They are dirt cheap and I have a few of them. They have a cool history as Sony bought minolta back in the day :)
@@jorgenbjorn I actually have one on my S1H now, haven't had a chance to shoot with it much lately but will make that my next review over teh break. GO! Thanks mate.
Awesome setup! That mix of modern add-ons and wonderful look of these lenses is unique and a wonderful addition to modern lenses, that are technically perfect, but lost most of their emotions that are transported to the viewer. So most of this footage is changed in post to make it more pleasing. Does that make sense? Sometimes yes - but of it comes to film-like footage, it often is the wrong way. Compare the cost of the complete set to some modern lens... then it is a real bargain. Great video - biased in the best way possible. With lots of information and a pleasure to watch ! 👍🏻👍🏻
Oh ya totally freaking bias, but that's why i won't do "sponsored content"...i don't want to talk about stuff I'm not like fully behind. I have a job, i can't turn this into one lol. The thing about perfect lenses is that so much of what DP's often do is drop pro mist in front of them to reduce the clinical sharpness. That's a direct quote from a CSA Cinematographer Ron Sim (went to school with) when I asked him about the legitimacy of vintage lenses in the commercial world at. his level. (he's into them by the way). To each their own, it's not about the gear it's about the vision, we do discuss the gear too much on this platform definitely, but I think it's just easier that way than doing video essay's on very subjective type content. I do love that stuff, I could go on and on about even this helo sequence I cut as an exercise in editing 101 but who's going to watch that? lol Anyway thanks for being here and adding your contribution. Good luck mate!
These honestly feel better than some of the modern (budget brands). The work they put in deserves praise IMHO which is in part why I'm happy to support them. Very niche, but they do it SO well.
Well, now that you got me all nerded out, I'mma head to Ebay see if there's a cheap normal Helios 44-2 around. Ps I got nitpicky noticing the chopper sequence didn't have snow in the chopper shot, but it a was great lil intro I wasn't expecting! 😂
The snow was there, on take off...on the go pro on the side (although it was flying over a marshy field and the ice was under, it's tough to see. I made sure they matched and it was part of what made it so tricky lol. I actually had to wait for the snow to come to match it. A few more melt days would have been better, but i had the time then. Good luck on your search mate
Mark!!! hahah what do you suggest I can't decide bro , between anamorphic o just clean cine lens, or maybe there is a MM that you recommend is more usable anamorphic and other cine.. man tough decision ..
It was easy for me, I love the oval bokeh that's just something i've always been drawn to. For me flares are too distracting, I want to keep these as versatile as I can while still kind of keeping it true to their original optical form. But it is tricky lol, so many good options!
@@MarkHoltze ok great thanks Mark, so anamorphic bokeh with no purple or orange filare Right ? And the mount for my sony a7siii is ef but thinking in the future maybe red komodo, so what mount do you suggest, sorry the questions but a havent had answers from them in social media
@@sebastianbrenner Anamorphic bokeh is just the oval, the flares are the coloured bits. EF makes sense for you I think if you're getting Komodo especially. Ironglass as a PL to E mount, I think they have an EF to E as well that's reasonably priced. I got PL because camera systems swap out often here and I can rent them out easier on PL for some reason. Komodo has my taste buds salvaging pretty hard lol.
I know I shouldn't be worried, but it still weirds me out. Is the Mir lens radioactive? I have a Super Takumar 55mm f1.8 that I might get rid of because I can't bring myself to use it much. It's unfortunate because I love vintage lenses. Specifically m42 mount lenses.
Hi, mark. Can u help me with that i bought mir11 16mm and wanna use it with my MFT cam what adapter should i use i do a lot of research and got nothing specific for this lens
Hi mate, I'm not sure what mount the MIR 11 is specifically. Do you know which one it is? All you need is an adapter that mounts to the MFT camera system. I would google the lens to see if you can find what mount it is, I did a quick check and didn't find, so might have to go digging a bit deeper. I'm not familiar at al with the 16mm format soviet lenses or what obscure mounts they used unfortunately. Best of luck mate, I'm sure you'll be able to find it. Then the trick is to find that adapter. X to MFT (x being the unknown mount on the 16)
ya, it's a bit painful, but fresh made lenses made JUST for you. Hand made, none of this assembly line crap ;). I def feel you on this. I'm going to order the 28 and the wait is going to be a pain. I had to wait for the original one and this set, but in the end, 100% worth it.

Amazing video Mark! After I complete my Pentax Takumar set. I got my eye on USSR lens next!
Love those animated inserts Mark. Awesome work!
Thanks Pedro! Worth the time that goes into them for sure ;)

Awesome, I've been collecting the Mamiya Vintage. But I like that these are already rehoused . Great video
Love this! Would love to hear more about vintage lens hacks for crop sensors. Medium format stuff maybe?

I ordered the 4 lens set back in June ... still waiting on them but pumped to get them! Great video man love the transitions!

Discovered Iron Glass Adapters thanks to your channel Mark. Bless up.
Gotta share what we love mate, those guys are doing way more than I ever could for people like us who enjoy this stuff. I wouldn't even know where to begin with their contribution.
Great video as usual.. those lenses look like works of art. The more I use my 44-2 the more I love it.
It’s the lens that just keeps on giving 😂
Awesome review! Thanks bro!
Pleasure, good luck!
😂 I’m sorry about that. I’ll make it up to you some how

Did you get the anamorphic mod for these?
Bokeh only, not the flare. I want a relatively clean image. Anamorphic flares I find a little distracting for most things personally.
Yay Mark vid on a Saturday awesome 😎

Ironglass did a great job there, plus I like that it’s like extending the historyof the lenses in another form. I feel bad so many good lenses are not taken care of very well. This rehouse is another level.

Damn man, what a beautiful video about lenses!
Thanks! They’re easy subjects, not too demanding, work on my schedule and are ready to shoot just about anytime with an interesting backstory. 😆
What lens are you using ? I think it could be the lens, I don't have any issues with this one in particular, it's actually quite smooth.
How does the aperture ring work when it moves forward and back?
everything moves, the whole front of the lens moves when focusing shifts. Is that what you mean?
Early stages my friend....it only goes up from here. Good for all of us! ;)
Wide open the bubble bokeh is incredible 👌🙂

These lenses are so damn gorgeous! Currently, that full set is a bit out of the price range for me. One day!
Great video! I need to stop wanting every lens you shoot with. Keep it up.
Is that the Fotodiox PL adapter? I was thinking of getting it but heard some mixed reviews. How is your experience been so far? Great video btw!

How I wish it would reach me this winter season!🇳🇴

My first vintage lens is a takumar and then hear alot of good reviews on helios i would love to have this on my arsenal, i will be taking a photography and video class soon.
Will rehousing m42 lens make them compatible with older nikon DSLR 🤔 to have infinity focusing
The 40 is worth the extra cost imo... 1 more stop of light, swirly bokeh, and still made today.
Good luck mate!

@@MarkHoltze Looking forward for learning from you! 🔥💪
Hey what up bro !
What do you recomend the cine , or the cine anamorfic.. ?
I'm a sucker for anamorphic bokeh (oval shape) but I want as clean an image as I can get so opted for no flares. Just my personal preference though. I find doing flares in post give me a bit more control and they're easy to track with aFx. That way on or off, my choice depending on the creative direction we're going for.
What are you learning towards?

You know your the reason vintage is cool now 🎥😎
but i'm such a geek lol ;), how can that possibly be? ;)
awesome lenses, love shooting on the Soviet sisters!
Never underestimate them ;)
Awesome setup!
I do love that stuff, I could go on and on about even this helo sequence I cut as an exercise in editing 101 but who's going to watch that? lol
Anyway thanks for being here and adding your contribution. Good luck mate!
These rehoused lenses look so sick. I’ve seen them advertised on Instagram before just didn’t ever see any body who’s opinion I trusted use them.
These honestly feel better than some of the modern (budget brands). The work they put in deserves praise IMHO which is in part why I'm happy to support them.
Very niche, but they do it SO well.
Probably another Soviet lens is needed too :) A Carl Zeiss or a Jupiter or a Tair @ 135mm...
They have just dropped their first 135 orders I saw recently. They look nice too! I wish I didn’t see them cause now I want one 😂
Woooow :) Love it, nothing to add here

The snow was there, on take off...on the go pro on the side (although it was flying over a marshy field and the ice was under, it's tough to see. I made sure they matched and it was part of what made it so tricky lol. I actually had to wait for the snow to come to match it. A few more melt days would have been better, but i had the time then. for my sony a7siii

Ahh these are awesome lenses
I agree!!! ;)
As soon as I see a Hind D I get both Rambo 3 vibes and Metal Gear Solid xD
The Hind is iconic from my childhood for sure, those movies specifically lol. DCS has a HIND module coming out soon and I'm going to be all over that.
Due to this kind of videos, M42 lenses are 30-60% more expensive...
....please keep this thing going, I´ve just bought a Nikon AF 70-210 zoom for 30 bucks ;)
Except to sell it for $45-$65 in 6 months ;) lol
