For me, more than flares and bokeh, the most unique quality of the anamorphic look is the expanded field of view. For narrative work, it lets you keep a subject isolated like a telephoto lens would do, but while also letting you frame a wider scene like a 24 or 35mm would. So it’s just a really unique tool for storytelling. The flares and bokeh are ok, but the FOV effect cannot be replicated otherwise so you kind of loose the actual feel of what an anamorphic lens achieves.
I actually cut that part out of the script where I talk about the more telephoto separation on wider focal lengths for time, it got into TOO much what anamorhpic look is when I had just stated I didn't want that to be what the video is about lol. Good topic, but i need some actual shot anamorphic footage to make a real case on that and just didn't have enough in this case. What started out as a way to get more info out of a frame, has really become a gold standard on how we interpret visual story telling in film. Great addition mate, thanks!
Welp. Just bought a 44-3 now. To add to my 44-2. Worst thing to happen to my wallet was finding your channel. Not even lying. *But truthfully, keep up the fun content.
I love flares, don’t care for egg shape bokeh. But this is a fun video to make me want to play around with what’s possible. Rules tend to yield the same results, you know?
same here. so I've been basically experimenting with the fishing line in an 'easier' way: I have it in the front of the lens. It does give some interesting (and cool imo) results.
Back in the 70s it was fashionable to alter the shape of the light blobs (we didn’t have bokeh then) by putting a piece of card with a cut out over the front of the lens...stars were popular...
Try a fusion lens with anamorphic projector lens please 🙏🏼 I really want to understand how can do that and if it's possible to find a way for use wide lenses without crop or vignetting
Nice video! Not sure if I would ever go fishing with my 44M but looks good. I think that if you could do the same to any vintage 35mm you are set for any "special" project (thinking about the color shift).
The Helios lenses are LEGENDARY. Really great lenses, awesome character, especially if you get a CLA'd one. I have my 44-2 anamorfaked, and it's soooooooo nice
There is one more mod that can be done - remove some iris blades to get the "cat eye iris" - yes, it means taking the lens apart. It looks more or less like anamorphic bokeh, but the tips of ovals are a bit pointier. NOTE: I havent tried it myself, only seen some videos and pics. Retro Foto House had some videos.
Maybe ONE day! Right now I like to keep it simple. I tried taking apart a dead Pentacon and the iris blades were a nightmare to put back together. I need better tools and more experience for sure! Thanks for the additional info mate!
Beautifull man I love bricolage too.I have seen a tutto that show how to do better flare without a wire, scratching verticaly a frontal UV filter. I ve dont do it cause almost my equipment stay in Havana. And we are stucked in Mexico because Covid. Greatings my friend. Keep going! Sorry about my english.
Thank you Mark for this amazing helpful video! I have a question about Helios 44-2, I assume since this is lens still not fully considered an anamorphic lens, so it won't require any desqueeze in the post?
So glad your video popped up in my research today, Mark! I think I've tried every "Anamor-fake" trick in the book and I'm itching to shoot on some real glass. 😬😬😬
@@MarkHoltze does the thickness matter? I tried somethingike fishing line, but didn't have any actual lying around... Still a plastic line, I coloured blue.
I just was able to purchase (Used) Both the 50mm and 32mm Atlas anamorphics. I think those are the two lenses that us solo shooters can realistically use. All we need is a big credit card...
I can’t mate, they have a very distinct look, they’re $$$$$$$$$$ for that look too. Think less of what look to mimic and figure out a way to make accessible lenses look good for you. It’s way easier
it almost feels like a waste with the S1H and NOT being able to use them.....when the reality is part of getting this camera was the potential to use them. COVID hit and loads of production work dried up (which was planned for this) but development still moves on with found footage lol. I suspect some point in 2021 the real thing might happen, those Atlas anamorphics look pretty dope, they're accessible at the very least.
I think the Sirui anamorphic lenses might be the best budget option. They come in EF, E and MFT mounts, no PL. They don't have cinema style markings on them though, they're basically photography for video lenses, but do retain those anamorphic image characteristics.
Since I'm still new to the photo and video world, I won't be able to apply this knowledge. But still watched and enjoyed your video until the end Mark 😉 - what video will you do on Sunday? 😀
Thanks mate! Figured might be nice to silently showcase the giveaway Helios 44-2 a few more times before it's gone for EVER...well not really GONE, gone to INSPIRE so NEW life! lol
If I understand correctly anamorphic gets more horizontal field of view without proportions distortion, I don't get why imitating its only optical distortions gets any optical advantage... aaah aesthetics.
@@MarkHoltze Do you think eBay is the best way to go if no one around me locally is selling one? Not a ton of cinematography buffs here in central Virginia!
Ya it’s good, just make sure to read description carefully and ensure the seller has a good reputation and return policy. No fungus, no grease on blades and smooth focus action.

I would use streak filters instead of adding a fishing line. But I am definitely going to try this mod on one of my Pentax lens
Filters are a much easier solution for sure!
Epic knowledge gained here. Thank you and what a great production job and edit on this video. Sound is even top notch.
All aspects of production considered, thanks for your kind words mate. ✊
I recently did a Helios comparison video too, but yours is on a whole different level :) It's great, well done!
On your channel?
Can't wait! Really should use my Helios lenses more...
There's a good reason it's so widely adored. Even people who think vintage sucks are always talking about how they want to "try a helios". :)
Great video as always Mark! Keep up the great work 👍
Thanks guys! ✊
Good stuff mayne. The steady stream of quality content is much appreciated. I can't wait to try this on some weird lenses :0
I might be 2020 tapped out, need to get out and do some more lens testing! Appreciate you being here!

Just a heads up, the link to the Anamorphic on a Budget channel in the video description doesn't work
Thanks for that! Will rectify!
I'm pretty sure that small modded accessory is an unholy symbol of the Eye of Sauron.
lol! How did I not see this before?

Thanks Marco, hopefully push out more than 25 for 2021, banner year this year for sure.
Great info. And a great way to get started with using this look!
These are awesome! The flares look great, even if they do sometimes make the bokeh look like little coffee beans.

Only fishingline can make that flare ?
Any kind of small obstruction that would cause the light to diffract. I’m sure other materials can be used
Thank you Mark for this amazing helpful video! I have a question about Helios 44-2, I assume since this is lens still not fully considered an anamorphic lens, so it won't require any desqueeze in the post?
That’s right it’s spherical so no need to de squeeze
So it only changes the bokeh not the amount of space that fits in the frame? I mean the cine mod
@hamfromburger ya just changed the bokeh; no impact on the frame. Might let a BIt less light in since it won’t open full wide, but it’s negligible
Love it got my own blue model!
Nice!

Here we go!! Thanks Mark!
"IT'S GO TIME" ;) LOL
I tried making one of those inserts... The ovals work, but the flare does not... I was really looking forward to the flares...
Did you try the fishing line? You can even tape fishing line to the end of the lens vertically and as light hits it, you’ll get the flares.

That's so cool. I want to give this a try.
are there photography lenses that have the same look/equal characteristics as the panavision cine lenses
Similar but not the same. Those panavision lenses are on a diff level

Anamorfake for the win. What an awesome mod. One day mark, one day we will all be rich or lucky enough to be allowed touch one for real!!

who is stupid enough to put anamorphic lenses in front of a super 8 format? that medium really isn't made for that
I like Tito's page. You gotta be ready to mentally suck up a lot of information though, ha
the bokeh works but the flares do not.
Only one that never used an anamorphic lens can pretend you can fake the look of anamorphic lens
Fake it even if you've made it!
With these modded lenses, you only get the undesirable attributes of anamorphics and none of the good stuff.
It’s the superficial stuff….absolutely. It’s way more nuanced than this…true anamorphic anyway.
