    • @mynam3isnathan
      @mynam3isnathan Год назад

      Haven't seen anyone other than the occasional independent shop / project doing FD rehousing other than PS Technik. They don't post rough estimates anymore but a few years ago it was $8-10k as a super general ballpark estimate. Really not an option for certain owner operators though your 85 sounds like a perfect candidate.
      Did some quick research and I think it's still going to be expensive as hell but at least there's a few options (with likely very, very long waitlists). Reddit tells me TLS, Zero Optik, and Whitepoint Optics could be plausible alternatives.

    What is the main reason for re housing these? I love vintage lenses on my old Fuji, but why not just use the lens in its original housing? (Greetings from Vancouver) Thank you:)

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  Год назад +1

      The ONLY reason you would do this is if you work in a top tier film/doc production work. The re-housing is almost 100% added functionality for a professional work environment on feature docs, factual docs, narrative film productions. You have crew, big rigs, need consistency and dependability (hard to put 50-60. year old lenses through some of these demands and often times those photo lenses do not have the functionality required for things like wireless focus, matte boxes etc.
      Hope that helps! Bottom line, look at the physical difference between cinema lenses and photo lenses today. What makes these special is you're taking a photo lens and making it work for cinema use while retaining that authentic "vintage look" these lenses are known for.

      Ancient Optics rehouses minotla but they're not cheap. I would argue don't do it unless you work in a commercial space that can leverage the advantages rehousing brings. They make the lenses much bigger and heavier and harder to use practically as a single shooter so there's that to consider. Modding might be your best bet, but again depends on what you have planned. Ya it’s not for everybody as discussed. You need the functionality and work in a tier that can afford that very small investment. There is gear modding etc as a less expensive route, heck the mark I’s are less expensive. The fact of the matter there is a market for it, so just wanted to put out what you can expect. I’ve spoken at length about this generally: the “worth” these lenses fetch on the open market is mainly due to demand and availability. What a lens is worth on the market doesn’t truly dictate its value. But we all have a different definition of value based on our own set of variables and circumstances. These lenses are already paid off after having been used and rented out on the last 5 shoots. Everything else is gravy at this point.
      Look at zero optik turning 900 Leica R’s into $5500 lenses… they have a wait list 18 months long.
      I can see your point though. ✊

      @@MarkHoltze Oh yeah totally agree with you. I own several lenses that are significantly more expensive than these even, I just think they face a little *more* of an uphill battle in that these are basically refurbished and repackaged Ebay lenses, marked up over 10x. I totally see the value in it, but I'll be curious to see how many actually sell.

    The only downfall to these lenses is that they take 6+ months to ship. Love these lenses so much but that’s way to long to wait.

      It’s a problem rehousing services all have. Zero optik is over a year wait, TLS same, TK lenses…it’s a time consuming process. Long term investment however.

      @@MarkHoltzeyea. I’m fully aware. Am not at fault to the company. It’s the nature of rehousing. Esp when there desirable. But personally I just can’t wait that long.

      @MarkHoltze  Год назад +2

      It's only an advert if I was paid, or to a lesser extent, got the lenses for free. Both are not true (i wasn't paid and I bought the lenses). Small company, doing work I find valuable so happy to talk positively about it because that's how they make me feel.
      I know youtube has turned into a giant advertising platform, but I don't do this to advertise, I do this to educate and inform, I'm sorry you only saw "advert" behind my efforts, but I wanted to take a second and try to give you my perspective. :)

    So when you say, “these lenses were used by Greg Frazier.” Do you mean that Dune 2 was shot on iron glass rehoused Soviet lenses like yours, or… Dune 2 was shot on YOUR LENS SET???

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  3 месяца назад

      He used the Iron glass lenses, not mine specifically. He’s got his custom DUNE set he used. The feedback using them on the film helped Ironglass solidify their final design.

    $2500 each 😮

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  Год назад +1

      For rehousing like this, that’s a very good price. $4000, $5000 per lens from some of the comp on Leica R’s and those prices do not include the lens.
      If you are buying these one should be working in a market that can pay them off fairly quickly based on jobs. Lots of options out there. :)
