    Over the past few years I have shared videos using both my vintage Contax Zeiss and the much newer Meike Cine lenses and I always get asked which ones I prefer or how do they compare so I thought I would make this video to answer a few questions.
    I talk about why I have the two, their differences and similarities and which I would recommend based on my experience.
    I know that both these lenses are very popular when it comes to getting a prime set so hopefully this video can help you in choosing which one to go with.
    Hopefully you enjoy this video and find it helpful!
    Let me know if you have any questions :).
    Cheers,
    Flo

    Fun fact: the original Meike m43 cine primes were made using Veydra designs. Veydra was an American startup that wanted to bring high quality, inexpensive cine lenses to m43. They were doing well until a catastrophic burglary of their stock, worth hundreds of thousands. They eventually went out of business, and their lens designs were acquired by Meike. Tests show that the Meike m43 lenses are even better than the Veydras in terms of build quality and lens coating.

    Lovely video agian, Flo. Your shots look fantastic, regardless of Zoom, cine prime or vintage prime lenses.
    I've collected the Nikon AI lenses since some time, and have the 24 f/2.8, 35 f/2, 50 f/1.4 and 105 f/2.5 lenses. They're crispy, and the modding process is similar to what you do with the Zeiss. Love them.
    For my modern lensing needs, I opted for the Panasonic S 1.8 primes (got the 50 and 85, now planning for the 35) since they are lightweight, have AF, a wide focus ring with Linear focusing option, and are approximately the same length and diameter. They work very well for documentary projects, and have a neutral look. Plus since the S1 is full frame, they are low light beasts as well.
    I would have liked Cine glass, but Autofocus (especially Face/eye AF) is vital for my run-and-gun work, and I wanted something that is photography friendly too :)

      A friend of mine has the Nikon and shot beautiful stuff.
      And I do understand why you would go for the Pana (especially with the S1) it makes sense for run and gun work indeed. That's why I enjoy shooting with my zoom lenses or even with Canon cine cameras for the amazing and very useful AF :)

    I'm on my way to send my first two Contax / Zeiss lenses to a laboratory in France to cine-mod them, so my preference goes to vintage lenses, but I'm happy that a brand like Meike continues the work started by Veydra at the time of the original BMPCC.
    I came to Contax / Zeiss after thinking about Leica R (over budget for me at the moment) and Pentax Takumar (the lab doesn't de-click this type of lens), but I'm happy with it.
    Generally, I build my set starting from the all-arounder (on S35 / Aps-C mount) which in this case is the Distagon 28mm f2.8 to which I added the Planar 50mm f1.7 which I will basically use as a short telephoto on the B- Cam for interviews and little else (which is why I preferred it to the more expensive Planar 1.4).
    In the future I think I'll take a real telepohoto, perhaps a Sonnar 85mm 2.8 or a 135mm f2.8, in order to complete a set that, come to think of it, could be suitable if one day I had to go full-frame (not in my plans at the moment).

      @@Mr.Monta77 Hey thanks for the testimonial! A few months ago I bought the Sonnar 135mm f2.8 and I'm happy to know it's a good lens, not that I had any doubts about the quality, but it's always useful to know the opinion of those who have already had the pleasure of using it. As soon as possible I will send it to France for all the cine-mod stuff and at that point, I think my Contax Zeiss basic/minimal set can be considered complete, later I would like to add a more extreme wide angle but at the moment it is not my priority.

    I have quite a bit of Canon FD glass but I think I'm going to sell it and build a Contax Zeiss Kit. I have a lot of vintage glass. My first contax Zeiss lens is a very clean MMJ 50mm 1.4, and although my Canon FD 55 1.2 AC spherical and Pentax SMCK 50 mm 1.4 are both sharp or wide open, that Lens has quickly become one of my all-time favorite vintage '50s. I figure I can probably sell the 55 1.2 for roughly 3,000 bucks in the market right now, and I'll probably use that money to flesh out a Zeiss kit. I'll probably keep a few of my Pentax lenses for a more compact film photography kit on my MX but we will see.

    THis is something that still haunts me to be honest. though I think personally that from a true comparison the image may seem closer than people realise, while something like the even more expensive sigma or CN-E lenses the image will change a lot. not that these dont have the differences, i'd say the meike have a kind of a vintage feel they fall off more than other lenses and arent so technically great, which is really why people choose vintage lenses anyway so if you want a somewhat vintage look but with the perks of modern glass the meike are also a good choice here.

  • @cinemaipswich4636

    The old still camera lenses are appropriate for their era. They definitely have that "look". Technology since has given us new glass, and new coatings. Florine glass has a higher index when it comes to the refraction of light. A dozen different coatings now are used today. Better or Worse are affectations in the mind of the user, or puffery used by promoters.

    Hey the videos and care taken are always appreciated but I think they might be more meaningful if the comparison was more technical. A more vintage look or beautiful image doesn’t really translate to being particularly useful given that almost everyone watching probably has access to film emulation software and ways to manipulate the image let alone use lens filter mists or low cons. The mechanics and spec of the lens is usually what defines a lens at this level and specific ally breathing CA and fringing in general, unless it’s very specifically tuned. That said using a camera like the bmpcc6k is like using a veil. It’s look is probably what dominates the look more with the exception of film convert and really these lens differences really only become apparent on a more neutral camera IMO simply because the sharper more digital images rely on the lens to add character. Eg shooting on a Red or Sony is often where a real difference leaps out a little more. Most lenses can be easily adjusted to match general contrast in post so its the coatings colour and flare that usually denote vintage character. It would have been good to know what each did. Also with the 35mm version of meike although probably sharper than the full frame, minimum focus is disappointing. There are so many lens tests and so few are definitive. I would always recommend Duclos and Gafpagear to nail the relevant detail. Thx for the overview and your thoughts. Always appreciated.

    • @OfTwoLands
      @OfTwoLands  Год назад +5

      Hey Ken, thanks for the input / feedback. I understand what you are saying and I do mention physical size, as well as the fact that the Meike is declicked, has T Stop etc. I also show the CA on the Zeiss for example.
      I also reviewed all these lenses independently. With regards to the BMPCC6K it is the camera I used and so my experience is based on this :).
      The brief image test was on the Canon R which is more neutral maybe.
      I like to do reviews on experience and real world use rather than just specs. Gerald Undone is great for specs tests :) Thanks for watching!

    • @thelightpainters
      @thelightpainters Год назад +2

      Hey Ken, I have to say I'm not sure about this. I think often we spend so much time in the creative industry looking at specs and technical data when often the real answer should be in looking at the results that 2 different pieces of equipment are giving and saying, 'which is best for my project/type of work I produce'. Numbers, prices, specs only describe a small portion of what matters in what we do.
