Even in and around the Solent in midwinter you will find occasional BIG mackerel on a sand bottom with a scratching rig with a cod feather on the bottom snood. Not every day, it needs to be a slow drift. As doggies go that's not the smallest ! Induced bite method, A sandwich in one hand, a large cup of scalding hot tea on your knee as you are facing away from the wind, Always works.
Put the kettle on the stove , just starting to whistle , surest way of getting a bite , worked two weeks ago in Southampton water 16lb Thornback was the result fish released back .
I feel that John does alot of touch and feel fishing with movement enticing a take. He may however have just got lucky , but he does definitely know his stuff not just how to catch target species but also sea craft with safety. A great video that we can all learn from.
There is never any doubt if there are spurdog around, if it's remotely edible, they've et it. we used to fish for them just over the ledge, hard work, 2-3 lb of lead into 300 ft of water. any bait. if they are running you'll catch them.
Great to watch you two fishing my area . The Boxer i think was a wreak i used to dive on and used to recover some nice munition with nice brass calibrated heads . Twenty plus years ago you defiantly would have had cod onboard from all around the areas you were fishing ,a friend even had a 20lb cod from the dive boat will waiting for the divers who were diving the Boxer. I think i need to get more adventures and try new marks, but it all tacks time and the boat is still new to me so just building confidence in the stuff i do.
