In the myth , swimming in the river Styx makes you immortal unless you're dead allready . This is also how Achilles got his immortality but was dipped in by being pinched by the ankle and dipped in leaving the pinched part not to be invincible, being named the Achilles heel
The river Styx doesn't grant immortality. It makes your skin impenetrable.

Kratos is immortal because after the end of GoW 3 the Gods of Olympus, from beyond the veil of death, have cursed him to never die from old age or by his own hands. They also bound him eternally to the Blades of Chaos (that now follow him everywhere), and every time Kratos wields them, his mind is filled with the pain and anger of ALL those he has killed.
It's all described in the official GoW novel (2018) written by Cory Barlog and his father.
No. Aphrodity cursed him in Chains Of Olympus
@@tjk-goix8513 Nah. Aphrodite doesn't even appear in "Chains of Olympus".

I saw an explanation that since Kratos is cursed to not die by killing himself, consequently since he’s spartan he considers letting himself be killed in a fight the same as suicide. So he has to lose to someone who is stronger than him while he’s fighting all out or he’ll just heal or the same power that keep the blades attatched to him will bend fate to keep him alive

Swimming in river styx can actually make you immortal

I mean, he is a demi-god, son of Zeus, rose to godhood, and was also cursed, and correct me if I'm not mistaken, he did eat the ambrosia (I didn't play that particular game that had that). So honestly, he has what he needs to be immortal.
Come on just obtaining godhood is more than enough, pretty sure demigods are immortal too
He’s like Sun Wukong: thrice immortal (godhood, ambrosia, curse)
@@Evra22 not all, I think Hercules is supposed to be able to live a long lifespan but can die of age.
@@TheBaldBastard Oh ok, thanks for info. I was pretty sure everyone in the pantheon have infinite longevity
@Evra22 I could be wrong, so don't quote me, as far as I know, the GOW universe bases itself of of actual Mythos (with creative freedom) so as far as I know, you must be born a God, or be granted godhood, or obtain it via ambrosia or whatever er else they did to achieve immortality. They aren't exactly clear on the lifespan of demi-gods so I'm just speculating
He would be nearly immortal with something similar to an acheleas heel because swimming in the river styx gives you that gift/curse according to Greek mythology
He will die to atreus. It was a family curse in zeus's family that the father will die to the hands of his son. Kratos killed Zeus fulfilling the curse and now atreus can do the same to kratos. But I don't think the curse will work on atreus and kratos now that they have travelled to different pantheon
@@friendlycreeper1045 he will likely still die to Atreus because when you swim in the river Styx you still have 1 vulnerable part on your body which is why I said nearly invincible

I think hades's soul influenced atreus to give him shapeshifting and soul manipulation. Wich is the curse kratos feared at first since he knew firsthand how much torment hades's power implied. He addressed it as sickness because the kid wouldn't know what the tartarus or the influence of countless souls full of regret would be.
In all honesty for Kratos to not have Hades soul would be a massive plot hole. We can see directly in the scene where you kill him the soul enters Kratos not the weapons.
Exactly!
Wtf are people talking about his soul went into Hades weapon, nonsense
Hades Clearly Absorbed Atlas Soul into his body, which is why in Ragnarok Kratos uses the God power of Atlas...
@@TheStellarmanCo. wait what atlas power?
@@adriananic8258 In Ragnarok Kratos has special power moves with all his weapons, so when you use the "Blades of Chaos" Kratos has a special move called "Atlas God Power" and he literally stabs the ground and the whole ground starts shaking, that's because Kratos has "Atlas" power because he absorbed "Hades" soul, Hades which had absorbed "Atlas" soul in the Great war, and Atlas if you remember os the Strongest of all the Titans, which is why he literally is holding up the Earth, Kratos now has this same potential which puts him in another tier of Godhood
@@TheStellarmanCo.Bro atlas power was given by the atlas himself
It's kinda proven that anyone who swims successfully in the Styx is immortal
It's invincibility which they get. The river doesn't make them a god and give them everlasting life
Imagine gow 6 kratos going back to get his whole inventory to kill the last boss
In the end he literally became the god of hope that’s literally it.
I’m pretty sure he just absorbed Athena’s Hope from Pandora’s Box
@@Anakinvoorhees He did both, cause when he realized that he needed to leave his daughter in hell for the second time. That’s when he was essentially letting his grief go. He was saddened to not be with his daughter anymore, but he knew he needed to open Pandora’s box as , hope is literally a power that goes against the gods. As in the story gods feed off of the fear that humanity had of them. The humans worshipped because they feared what would happen if they didn’t. You see this with the term. “Ares give me strength “. “Zeus give us water from the sky for our crops “ Hades was the most feared of all bar maybe Zeus as death wasn’t wanted
I always thought it was funny, the idea of Kratos branching mythologies, destroying them all, until he got to Christianity, and Jesus either stopped him or finally calmed him down, which is why it's one of the few religions that remain in large form, lol
Not true
Did you miss the part where kratos literally stabbed himself in the stomach and released hope back on to the world?
To answer both those plot holes at the end about him being able to swim in the river Stix without being harmed and about him being able to walk thru the hyperion gates, the creator answered those as well, it's because Kratos had Hades weapon on him, the weapon gave him the abilities to swim in the river Stix because hades soul was inside the weapon and he is able to walk thru the hyperion gates because he possess the true soul of a God within the weapon, which gave him access to use the gates
Did he not swim in the river before that though? In GoW 2?
@@cokeweasel1064 i don't think so
Well, anything bathed in the River Stix does get a certain degree of invincibility. This is why Achilles was virtually unkillable except for his heel where it was not dipped into the water.
If Brok and Sindri got a hold of them weapons from the past, they would quit any project they working on and have an entire vacation with working on them.
There’s an obvious reason, he killed everyone who could ever ferry the souls of the dead to the underworld and killed death itself in his universe and since his body is from there he cannot die nor go to the underworld
No, the soul of Hades didn’t go into the blades, Kratos physically absorbed the soul into himself.
Actually it’s most likely the blades as the blades would’ve died if hades died as they were his,and Hephaestus forged them
@@millasboo No, the soul literally goes inside of Kratos during the cutscene, bro. He absorbed it.
@@millasboo Hades used the blades to collect souls, and he stored said souls in himself. You can see all of them escape once he dies. This means when Kratos took Hades' soul, he absorbed it and not the weapons.
are you trying to say the makers are wrong? LOL
@@justanaverageenjoyer8494 what the hell is your sentence
Gaia cursed him because he killed a family member so unless someone who bests him at his full strength comes around he won't die
I think it’s determination and sheer willpower that keeps Kratos together.
Kratos is currently a demigod with the strength of a god due to a small(albeited controlled) part of Hope that remains in him.
All arguments that say he is the god of war crumble, its just a title. He has shown none of the abilties a full god has,he is just strong
The guy cant even turn giant or fly from the skies.
All true olympians could do that
If not for that part of Hope he would be weaker than in Ascension
Bro he did that in gow2
Kratos has been a god since the end of the ps2/3 trilogy. In GoW2014 he says to Atreus that he is a god, not a demigod. Also the people that made game say he is too.
I personally believe that after Kratos drained his God power into the blade of Olympus, he secretly figured out (somehow) that the only way to regain his God power/immortality was to stab himself again with the blade
Make sense
But he lost the godly magic in gow 3 because greece is no more
He regains his Godly strength n stuff as a God of War but he lost his godly magic like poseidon rage n stuff
If you swim in the stix you get the curse of Achilles and choose a spot on your body to be a mortal weakness only issue is it only takes a slight tap to the chosen area to kill you
at the end of gow 3 he absorbed his gow power back from the blade when he stabbed himself
He is immortal because he killed Thanatos hades and Hermes who collect souls when people die but when the die nobody can die so idk how kratos killed after he killed those gods
Who's correct? More likes = win
maybe thanatos wasn't true death because he is limited to greek mythology and maybe he is just god of death for mortal as kratos ones was not gods
@@shanx9750 he is the true god of death, even his weapons says this as well about him along with the fact that he is the personification
Lmao he double killed them I guess xD
Kratos even says himself death can have me once it earns me
Yeah but in god of war ragnarok, he said that when his homeland died so did the magic with it, and he tried to remember any of it and couldn't. So even If he had the soul it likely would've died with Greece.
He is from a land which chained him since he broke the world he broke the chains
I want to know how he got to the Norse world and met Freay....she said they faught each other when they first met....I want that story told 💯
Canonucally, Kratos was cursed to where he cannot be killed or die by his own hand, I forgot what can kill him, but he can't die by normal or abnormal means
I forgot about that, in new GOW Kratos still has his Blades of Choas but he no longer has his Hercules gloves, his Hades blades or his wings for running fast. It would be cool if he still those stashed under the floor too.
Honestly, just that he's the son of Zeus is probably the answer.
There are plenty of mortal sons of Zeus. The actual answer is that he was granted immortality by Zeus when he became a God. And yes, he does do that in myths with a different son, that being Heracles.
He has been cursed to remember the deaths of his wife and daughter forever
It’s probably because those who are in charge of cutting his string to signal his death are no longer alive- hence no death for kratos
He's just confirmed built different 😂
The ACTUAL reason he's immortal is simply because he's the son of Zeus and possesses godhood.
He's also cursed to not be able to die by his own hand, but that's more of an addition than anything
And killed Thanatos.
There are several mortal sons of Zeus. The actual answer is that Zeus granted him immortality along with godhood, which he can do in the myths.
@@McLightZyes but hes a powerful god, if he can do what he did in god of war 3 immortality would be childs play
He is immortal because he was cursed by the oracle to walk this earth for eternity
God of war's design for Hades is sooo good, the boss battle as well. Truly memorable
He said it himself. "Death will have me, when it *earns* me."
He swam in the river of stick and I think that gives you immortality
It does in the mythology but I don’t think it does in the game
the fuck is the river of stick
No in the myth it makes you impenetrable. Think of Achilles for example.
So Hades basically knew Norse magic of soul transfer
Is this joke comment?
Sarcasm is like electricity, half the villagers don’t get it
@@trignova1564 thanks for calling me vilager
I would love to see a return to Greece at some point and this would be a great explanation for it. He needs the soul of a death god for one reason or another, collects these blades and the dwarves seal him within the Blades of Chaos using the Winds of Hel
A dlc where we go back to olympus for a bit would be crazy
"death can have me when it EARNS me"
In the new games they say kratos is a god. They don't mention he's a demigod anymore. And if he needed to get a soul of a god to swim in the river Styx and walk through that gate then technically he should still have it.
Thank you for explaining this I was wondering this thank you so much
If in a future God of War game Kratos goes back to his Greek homeland I would love to see him confront that past once and for all. And even go against Athena too.
Love the correct grammar with “Hades’”
Maybe when he was swimming through Stix, he thought of his head hair as his weak point. So now he's immortal
Man. If we got a time jump cut scene of Kratos going back to mount Olympus for a weapon in God of War 6 🤯
He is not immortal he just ages like fine wine. He still is a demigod which means his lifespan is way higher then a normal human just remind yourself how long Zeus lived
Would have been so cool to use Hades as a summon after you fully upgrade them
going back to mount olympus would honestly be sick in a later god of war with the better graphics and visuals
I think it comes down to both everything he went through in his Greece arc and Pandora’s Box.
Think about it, the man is steeped in ancient primordial energy which includes the god killing power within the Box, at some point he’s bound to have one of those powers stick or just becomes a part of him, like his unending rage from being a demi-god turned God of War still sticking out his blades being intrinsically tied to his very being.
Idea. "MAN LITERALLY TOO ANGRY TO DIE"
I believe he said “death can have me when it earns me” in one of the early games. He’s gonna have to work harder than that. Lol
I like to think that hades is just chilling in kratos, kinda like that one dwarf in a ring
Man legitimately ascended he's a God pure and simple not to mention he took himself out of his own time line so he exists outside of time now as well.
Bro gave Helios that light skin stare💀
It would be so cool to go back to a destroyed Olympus and get 1 of those weapons for the next game
I like to think it because something serious will be revealed one way. Kratos was curse to have the blades of Chaos after the destruction of olympus for an unknown reason. Athena's death resulted in a greater existence caused by a higher power and odin tries to learn the secret of reality by looking into a tear that looks like the same sort of magic as Athena's spirit.
would be so sick if kratos goes back to a ruined mount Olympus to get his weapon’s back
I've been wondering this for a while
I swear his immortality is due that he has always been a god, just so young he had no gifts to see yet
It's weird how when he was a part-time God of war, (GOW2) he had more godlike power than now after killing all of them
I just realized why fire giant two from the elden ring dlc looks so familiar, it has the same build as hades
Death: “Kratos your dead”
Kratos: *Mocking tone* “I know you are but what am I
Could be Athena, could be all the weapons and godly items he's touched, could be the act of climbing out of the hell realm into the mortal real, could be the countless prayers he's recieved, could be messing with fate, could be opening pandora awaking him to be a god of sheer will, could have been a mix of all of it... who knows.
When he impaled himself with the blade of olympus at the end at least
He carried the blades up until that scene on Mount Olympus. Meaning he could walk through the hyperion gates and swim the river styx..
It could be if the weapons that contained got damaged or destroyed the soul could have been sucked into the nearest vessel which would have been Kratos. Which could actually explain his slightly different personality from the trilogy to the next game in line.
Someone said that he is cursed throughout time to never die by his own way. If he dies by someone better than him he'll still come back because the curse revives him because it thinks he wasn't giving it his all. He dies by whatever he uses for himself, curse will basically say no not till I see you fight an unwinnable fight. Forgot who said it but pretty sure many of the gow coverage youtubers will say it.
Another thing is that even if he did have the claws they would’ve lost their magic
Kratos like sun wukong has mamy layers of immortality. Persephones curse, replacing thanatos as death, technically replacing zeus as king of olympus etc.
He isn't immotal, he just has the will and god power to keep climbing out of hell itself every time that he dies
I pause this before I can finish because I just have to say that that is a really good question.
I think he just assumed the mantle of god of war. He eventually became stronger and stronger and took more god powers from his fallen foes until he became a full fledged god. Which is why his son is also a god and also a giant thanks to his mother as well. So I don’t think we have to worry about Arteaus being a demigod but also basically a full fledged god as well. Not really because he’s half giant but those are essentially gods as well in my opinion as they have powers, don’t age, etc
Maybe the fact that he's a god and for god's death isn't really a thing when they "die" it's more like they're being transported but with enough effort or status they can come back the only way for a god to truly die is if the thing they represent disappears like if war disappear'd and is forgotten ares would disappear another way for a god to be killed is if another god absorbs what they represent by brutally and mentally defeating them like kratos did.
Pure rage and hatret allowed him to pass through cuss the gate was scared shitless and didnt wanna tell kratos he isn't a true god
He just got that Dawg in him
I didn’t know god of war had so much mythical ties to greek mythology
It's almost like Kratos is a god of war or something
The old which who singed the ashes of his dead family to his said he shall forever live with these ashes … or something like that
All the magic and anything mystic of the OG series died when Olympus fell, in 4 kratos tells his son he doesn't have access to his old magic
Just imagine reaction of brock and sindri on seeing all those weapons
I think the soul is in the weapon. That's the purple glow it gives off.
I believe that when he stabbed himself with the blade of olympus at the end of God of War 3, he was re-imbued with his god powers that he sacrificed to the blade at the beginning of God of War 2, thus making him immortal once more.
I could have sworn the curse of his ashes won't allow him to die
Well based on what they say in the newest GOW all of his old powers and weapons aside from the blades of chaos are basically useless since they used Olympian power.
I think an interesting idea for the next GoW game would be to return to the ruins of Greece even if it's not the main location of the game.
He is the god of war and the God of death ( he killed thanatos and took his position) the only god to be god of 2 things
Not the only god of 2 things
I would really love to see a gow game where kratos has to go back to Greece to get all his old weapons qnd reforge them
