My Ranger Platinum V6 diesel has developed this noise at 24,000km. Took it to Ford and they said they thought it was the tyres so they were rotated, issue was still there. Took it back again and had the tech go on a road test, said they would look into it, had the car overnight , checked the diff no metal in the diff oil all good. Told me they hear the sound, but don't know what it is. Had enough of being treated like an idiot. I have a relationship with my Ford dealership that I dont want. Going to make them watch your video and demand this gets sorted otherwise im rejecting the vehicle. I have raised a complaint with Ford Customer Care and received a very average response.

Hi Paul, really enjoying this series on what it's like to actually own one of these highly rated vehicles. I was also particularly interested in your service experience at the dealership. I have 2 cars serviced at one of the leading Korean manufacturer's local dealership. I always book online for a specific time prior to 9 am. My biggest annoyance is that, every time they advise that they will need the car all day and it will be ready about 4 pm. Invariably they then ring or text at about 3.30pm with a list of overpriced wiper blades or a pollen filter that is twice the price of any retail outlet, that need to be changed. They always guarantee that they have time to get it done by 4.30 and strongly remind me that they close at 5pm. I feel like it's a tactic to make you say yes to anything at that late stage of the day.

When I contact Toyota, it was the fault of mister nobody, they even stopped replying my messages or calls. Needed to file a case against them in Department of Trade and Industry, to get them being serious in the matter.

In case anyone is interested [and it's probably an overkill, but], if one wants to specify the sound being heard (perhaps when it is not loud enough), he can do a fourier transform (FFT, apps for spectrum analysis) on either the audio input (a microphone) or an attached accelerometer (attached magnetically). (Calculating the angular velocity related to a peak in FFT would then be an exercise for some :).

I had the first complementary service on it and I didn't even mention these issues because I am an ex ford service employee of 7 years and I can tell you I was nervous taking my Raptor in to a dealership after seeing first hand what went on. Now I can tell you not one mechanic will check the diff oil at pre delivery inspection.

With the shot of the diff while moving, it would be interesting to see the shot without a fisheye lens under cornering. I wonder whether the lateral load is not being taken by the case, but put though the half axels and the gearing in the diff, or if that casing has flex.

Love to see if the oil is braking down after the clutches have been put under stress after a few thousand kilometres of use. Probably start using a different oil or the preloade on the clutches could be out of spec from factory. Plus that on and off throttle whine is more like crow an pinion bearing. Lack of oil will definitely cause those issues.

Back in 1994 (basically just after modern man stood upright) I purchased a manual VR Commodore 'S' with a LSD. It would physically lift the rear of the car when in reverse and grind and pop and bang. Also the car would stay fixed in place on steep hills with the clutch depressed and no brakes applied... From very early on I might add. Dealer could never find a problem apparently. Until one day when the car jumped about a metre and a half to the left coming out of a right hand corner and nearly threw me into some very large trees. At that point myself and a family member demanded a solid solution to the issue the dealer 'couldn't replicate'.They ordered a replacement diff after finally (ie they hadn't looked before....) draining the oil in the diff and finding it cooked and full of metal. Service manager had to apologise and admitted they'd dismissed my numerous complaints because I was 22 at the time and their service department categorised me as a 'young whinging hoon' who was making the whole issue up. Clearly that wasn't the case. New diff worked as designed.

This all sounds very familiar. Not a Raptor. Not even a current gen Ranger. But we had a 2017 PX2 Wildtrak for work. Towed a braked, 1 tonne trailer regularly. Did a lot of driving. But all pretty standard. Anyway. We blew not one, but two gearboxes. The auto. Luckily under warranty. But my experience dealing with Ford in Geelong left a bit to be desired. Front of house staff not too bad, but the head mechanic and management, oh boy…
Anyway. Engines and gearboxes on pallets all over the shop there. And the amount of PX1-3 Rangers and BT50s you see on tilt trays is pretty alarming.
Long story short, they didn’t have a proper, dedicated transmission cooler. On the third trans, we got an aftermarket one installed. Saw highway speed trans fluid temps drop from 95 to 65 degrees. Much more inline with the competitors. Just wild to me that they didn’t have proper coolers up front..
Good luck. Ford, they circled the problem!

I think the issue is less brand specific, & more pre-delivery specific with lots of new cars over the past couple of years. If it passes a test drive without the wheels falling off, good to go. None of them seem to check oil levels, bolt tensions, wheel alignment, noises & rattles etc, it's up to the customer to complain if they notice something, & in most cases it will get missed. Saves plenty of $ by cutting corners & relying on most customers not noticing or questioning even if they do.

Mine was one of the early ones so initially Ford had no clue what was going on so my truck was used as a bit of a guinea pig and a number of tests were required, but if I wanted something (or they), it was always 'when can you bring it in' ...none of these long waiting times you mention. IMO, thats really poor service, particularly initially. I can appreciate new parts taking longer to be ordered and delivered to your local Ford, but not appointments! Thats poor. I wouldn't recommend booking through their website and would always call them, personally. Anyway, my fault is fixed (faulty door sensors), I'm 12,000kms in and no diff whine here. Love the truck, best vehicle I've ever owned.

Thanks Paul, for the awesome report and update. Being an avid follower of your channel and an Aussie working in the Philippines, I am looking at buying the 2023/4 Next Gen Version Raptor too. Sadly they only have the underpowered (non V6 Petrol) base variant 2.0L Bi-Turbol model here. Interestingly SRP value is much less equivalent to AU$63,000 versus AU$85,500 (Exl. On road costs) The $22,500 difference seems excessive for the smaller engine and or it's import value/taxs are much less. Anyway, being the underpowered variant, diff wine and poor idle hopefully won't be an issue for me. We will see...

Seem to have a few issues. Rear tailshafts we get new ones sent to us from the dealers to check for balance to replace old ones. Early ones the rear stub that the cv joint mounts onto that bolts to the differential was running out so far we had to vee out the weld, true it up, reweld it and rebalance the shaft. Not so of late but we have a 1 year old Raptor owner bringing in his shaft in the next few weeks because he is fed up with Ford dealership. We will see what we see.

Here in South Africa the FJ cruisers value just keeps climbing. Many people drive them in the dunes as well. I have a 2016 fortuner and the only part I replaced other than servicing and brakes was the manifold. My current mileage is 197,000. I drive 10% dirt roads.

I love the Ranger. I'm glad it exists. Ford are giving people exactly what they want which will force others to catch up (Toyota introduces one electric seat, 7 years later you get one led light, 12 years later the passenger gets an electric seat too etc) but in saying so, I wouldn't trust Ford as my only car.
I know people get incredibly tilted defending a billion dollar company.
I'm not saying Ford dont know how to make a reliable car, that's not it. What I'm saying is they simply choose not too.

I had a 2012 Ford MC Mondeo with twin clutch and it developed a whine similar to that, ie, off throttle, at about 120k - 130k. Not loud, but noticeable unless you had the radio volume up a little bit.
