It’s interesting how Iroh developed. He was once a great general, but losing his son forced his to realize the true nature of war and the world. Instead of turning to vengeance like so many of his family would have, he reached enlightenment. And, in the end, while he could not save his son, he was able to help someone else...

I just found out that this was the voice actor's last episode. He passed away, and he knew it was coming. As he sang the song, it was said that he was actually mourning himself before it was time for him to go. RIP Mako aka Uncle Iroh
You can hear it in his voice, the way he is strained and choked while singing, it’s so gorgeous and heartbreaking. I hope Mako is at peace, I hope he felt true peace in the end.
I believe that the voice actor who replaced Mako refused to sing "Leaves from the Vine." His reason being that it was Mako's song. I figured everyone could use yet another reason to tear up when you hear this song.
He did study the water bending techniques, hence he came up with the Lightning Move. He studied alot of the other elements, and spirit world. He truly is the Avatar.

Let’s not forget Zuko screaming at the sky. He might’ve been trying to redirect lightning, but I truly believe part of him wanted to die. There’s no way he could’ve known he would do it successfully, and wasn’t even in proper stance. He didn’t care what would happen either way.
Your comment resonated with me so deeply it made me cry. The character of Iroh always reminded me of my grandad in the way he looked and acted and your words are the words I wish I could’ve said to him. That was beautiful thank you so much
We see every main character shed tears in Avatar, but iroh is one of the only to shed tears when no one is around to help him, the one who helps everyone he meets. I think that’s one of the most important things about Avatar, it shows that even the strongest characters can break down at their lowest. Something we can all live by.
I think he chose to not let anyone see him sad, because it would have made his "job" of helping everyone else that much harder. They'd be focusing on him, and he wants them to focus on themselves. More than that, I think he has overcome his regret and grief but on this day, to not shed tears for his son would very disrespectful and so he wanted to be vulnerable to his regrets and grief, on this day. And I think it's just another one of his strengths, to be at a stage where you are so familiar and in touch with your emotions, that you can choose when and when to not react to your emotions, but not go down a slippery sloop of either never reacting to emotions or always reacting to emotions.
Nothing ever would Catch a moment like this no matter how alive they are trying to make it. This moment is forever frozen as leaves from the Vine RIP Mako.
its true, ive read he knew about not having long left, and this would be the last voice acting/ passionte work thing he did. I actually cried when i found that out.
I just came to realize (and yes, it took me a while) that when Iroh says "If only I could have helped you" it's because he helped so many people throughout his part of the episode, yet he can't help the person he loves most. Man :(
This also explains why Iroh helped Zuko so much. He felt guilty for his son every time, so he won't make the same mistake again for a loved one in need.
Also think about who specifically he helped during the segment: a small child, then a group of teen boys, then a young man, in that order. It was a microcosm of fatherhood.
In this episode Iroh goes around ba sing se and helps the people within the city where he lost his son. “Happy birthday my son. If only I could have helped you.” That line is MUCH more impactful when you put it in that sense.
I think he's also referring to how he's helped Zuko develop from the banished prince whose obsession with honor was his entire identity, to the young man who realized that things were much bigger than himself and that there's more to the story than what he had thought
Notice, each person he helped represented his son in each stage of his life: he helps the little boy, then those teenagers, and finally the mugger who just wanted things to not be so bad anymore. He was there for those people, because he couldn’t be there for his son. “If only... I could have helped YOU.” Heavy.
What makes me sad is that Mako was crying in Character and out of character. He knew what was about to happen and he was sad for that reason. This is why Tales of Ba Sing Se is one of my favorite episodes
So it was brought to my attention that Iroh’s Tale is a day of him reliving fatherhood. When it begins he comforts a toddler boy who was crying, as a father would. Then he watches a bunch of preteen boys play ball and then tries to teach them to be honorable and admit their mistake when the ball crashes through someone’s window, as a father would. Then he humbled the young man who tried to mug him, taught him about taking a strong stance and encouraged him to follow his dreams, as a father would. So he basically got to relive being a father on his son’s birthday, helping all those young men. Which makes the line, “Happy birthday my son…if only I could’ve helped you…” hit so much harder.
@trolls1210 well they can always do it in the next season but I have a feeling everyone wants to make sure Mako is the only person to sing it as it was his song and he made it the last thing he did in the show before he died
@@trolls1210The guy that voiced Iroh after Mako said that he always turns down requests from fans to sing the song because that song is Mako's song and his alone to sing and would be a dishonor to him. Not exactly those words but something like that

Such a simple song yet so meaningful and down to earth. For a Nickelodeon show, this is simply the best series I’ve ever watched. So glad I got to experience this.

The impressive thing about this scene is that we never actually come to know Lu Ten. The reason why we feel a lot in this scene is because we've come to feel for Iroh enough for it to affect us. His image becomes animated by the music, voice acting, and context.
It's sad to think he would have been a villainous character. He believed in all the imperialism and violence of the fire nation wholeheartedly just as his father did at the time. Iroh did fail his son, and it was that failure that drove him towards changing himself and ultimately Zuko
The voice actor who played as Iroh did actually cry during every recording and finally managed to hold it back enough to get through as much as he did. Props to him for getting that far. I can't get past the first line as long as I either watch or imagine this scene
You're wrong. Mako sings this from the bottom of his reflecting those who he lost in real life though his life was almost at the end. These notes are like a ww2 vet singing his last tune
@@generalgrievousproductions Are you kidding? The sith are the ones who are supposed to use their emotions to fuel their combat and their use of the force.

The irony in how Iroh is a person who helps everyone he crosses paths with but it is not able to help the one he truly wants to is so poetic and heartbreaking
It's not even the context or the song itself that makes me cry, it's the sound and sight of this gentle, tired, sorrowful old man weeping softly as he struggles to get through this beautiful song.
What's even more sad is that this was Mako's last recording, as he was succumbing to cancer. His last recording was him singing a beautiful song, knowing he was about to die.
@@izakrichman9440 the first voice actor of Uncle Iroh, Mako Iwamatsu, or simply, Mako, passed away after Season 2 due to esophageal cancer. This song was a tribute to him. The legend, Mako was in numerous roles, especially ATLA and Samurai Jack.
It hits hard to see Iroh look at his greatest failure. He didn't cry when he saw the wall still up. He cried because he stood on the wrong side of history and it costed him his son. When I think about that, it makes so much sense why he was so involved with Zuko.

Interest fact: Greg Baldwin, the actor who took over the role of Iroh after Mako’s passing, refuses to sing this song when fans ask him to at conventions. The reason that he gave was that it was Mako’s song. That’s a class act right there and Baldwin truly honors Mako whether it’s him playing Iroh or Aku in Samurai Jack

It always brings year to my eye because although i see this amazing character, i also see my dad. Rest Mako, & Thank you, Dad.
The letter makes it even more sad. It says, "To General Iroh, see you soon. After we win this war. Your loyal son, Lu Ten" Iroh tried to help everyone he ever met, but could not help his son. Heartbreaking, touching and poetic. Such a great show.
This just adds to the fact that this is such an iconic moment in, not just the Avatar series, but in animations history as a whole. That attention to detail is just amazing.
@@robbietheweirdo well not everyone. The unfortunate truth is that some people throughout history have had a little too much Azula in them to have any Iroh in them.

We all need a father figure in our lives-the feeling of security and peace that comes from the protection and provision of the family’s leader. I cried the first time I watched this scene when I was young, and it still tugs at my heartstrings whenever I see it. At first, I didn’t know why. I thought it was just because the scene was so sad, and I felt sorry for Uncle Iroh, plus the thought of his “brave soldier boy” not coming home alive… the lyrics were just brilliant! But now that I’m older, this scene has become more meaningful and layered for me. Two broken souls found hope and healing in each other’s company-one who lost his dearest son, and the other who never had a proper dad. What a great show. I am so grateful to have lived during the time when this masterpiece was created. It has truly become a part of my life, and I hope that future generations will watch it too!
This must be one of the best scenes in the show. And one of the deepest, if not The Deepest. Even compared to love- friends- and other plots. Successful warlord in the past, who lost his son, and didn't jump into rage and violence, but became the wisest and most humble man in the world. And the strongest for me. people say that mother's love is the strongest. But the Father, who lost his son during he war, that he led at that time... That's epic.
emilio monsen, that the voice actor of Iroh, Mako Iwamatsu was dying of esophageal cancer and this was the last episode he ever recorded. Hence the, “In honor of Mako” in the end. It’s really sad. Greg Baldwin told a story in one of his panels about the first time he met Mako’s Daughter and grandson who was also named Mako. It was his first time ever recording for the role after Mako’s passing and they wanted to sit in for the recording. Greg was super nervous bc he wasn’t sure if he would do the voice well enough or that Mako’s daughter would even like it. As they were listening, Mako’s daughter leaned back and closed her eyes. After the recording, Mako’s daughter thanked Greg and said he did the voice so well, that she able to hear her father’s voice and feel as though he was in the room for a moment That story made me cry

Crazy part about this scene is, as kids we understand that he went through loss but we never related to this song nor felt the depth of it until we grew older. Now when we listen to this because we have a better understanding of life and all that surrounds it, we feel his loss… R.I.P Mako
Leaves from the vine Falling so slow Like fragile tiny shells Drifting in the foam Little soldier boy Come marching home Brave soldier boy Comes marching home
It's a very powerful thing to be able to make someone cry in under a minute. It's a beautiful combination of the visuals, the music, the legendary performance by Mako and if you know it…the added significance of the song for Mako…I've never me a single person who can't be moved to tears by this one beautiful minute of animation history
The tale of Iroh is just… Perfect. You don’t need to have any prior knowledge of the world and the characters to enjoy it. But what I find so compelling about it is that, it completely recontexualises Iroh’s character. Someone who up until now has been a jolly old man, happy to share his wisdom with those around him. Becomes a sad lonely figure atop a hill. He’s always there to help someone through their troubles, and yet no one can help, him… this is his burden, and he knows that he must face it alone. He renounces his violent ways, after experiencing the pain and torment he put others through, it changes his perspective of war from something that yields honour to something that yields pain. He sees a second chance in Zuko, to be the father he feels Lu Ten needed him to be, and does everything in his power to do so.
It's not so much that he was lonely, he's not. It's that he tries to be helpful as often as possible because he knows what it's like to have not been able to 'help' his own son. And him not doing so actually leads to his ability to give sage advice. His son died and as a result, he left the fire nation for a while to properly grieve and to figure himself out again. Doing that shaped his personal philosophy and gave him experience with other cultures.

@@Cybrtronlazr Not really. You get to see the things that they went through in Ba Sing Se. That's my opinion
@@Cybrtronlazr The Tale of Momo part also wasn't filler though, as it tied into the search for Appa plotline.

We lost a great actor and a great man.
Yup
Omg 😭😭😭😭😭
I mean that in a, “wow, that’s deep and made me cry more” type of way

It's not so much that he was lonely, he's not. It's that he tries to be helpful as often as possible because he knows what it's like to have not been able to 'help' his own son. And him not doing so actually leads to his ability to give sage advice. His son died and as a result, he left the fire nation for a while to properly grieve and to figure himself out again. Doing that shaped his personal philosophy and gave him experience with other cultures.
