It’s fun, upon rewatching, to realize that Bumi was trying to train Aang for the final battle. “Typical Airbender...” and “Sooner or later, you’re going to have to strike back” are great foreshadowing statements. What a writing team!
Also, when Bumi hoped Aang would think like a mad genius to defeat Ozai, he wasn't far off from predicting all the end battles of the events during Sozin's Comet. Think about it: Katara: Mad for keeping Azula alive, genius move freezing herself and Azula and then chaining her hands to a grate. Sokka, Toph and Suki: Mad for treating airships as battering rams, genius because it worked perfectly! [Also a little sad as High Space Sword was gone. :( ] Zuko: Mad for taking the lightning strike straight to his heart, genius for having the presence of mind to hit the ground and then release it safely. @@coletrain583 Considering the man threw multiple houses with little effort while taking back Omashu, aside from previous Avatar incarnations Bumi might be the strongest earthbender in terms of raw power.
I really like how Bumi knew Aang wouldn't chose the 2 people (who are probably non-benders since they carry weapons) as the options. Especially since he knew Aang so well, he probably anticipated him being clever and choosing the "frail" old man as an opponent.
I wouldn't be surprised if they're just ordinary servants kitted out with those weapons just to coax Aang into choosing the frail looking old man between them.

Aang did indeed learn the four elements and many more in order to defeat Ozai. Including learning the ancient method of giving and taking one’s bending from a lion turtle.
It’s really sweet Aang would eventually name his first-born son after his oldest friend. Seeing him go after Bumi to hug him, after realizing who he was, Aang must have been extremely happy and relieved to know that someone he once knew over a hundred years ago was still alive! That actually shook me up a bit, watching this as a kid and rewatching it periodically up till now I've never noticed that and something hurts about not ever noticing such an emotional detail before
There’s something in Bumi’s character that I think isn’t talked about enough. Aang was one of Bumi’s closest childhood friends, and when he found out the air nomads were wiped he’d have been devastated. When he caught Aang in his city he had to be overjoyed to see his friend alive. Yet he reserved his emotions because he felt a duty to impart his wisdom on the Avatar. He probably came up with the whole plan in the first 30 seconds of meeting Aang, so indeed he is a genius too
This raises some really interesting thoughts: Bumi must have heard about what happened at the Air Temples and been pretty sad. He must have thought Aang was killed and likely believed that all the way up to the events of The Boy in the Iceberg, or even until he met Aang face to face (‘cause even when he found out the Avatar had returned, it would still be super unlikely that it would be Aang). He probably developed his own theories as to where the Avatar was. Because the Fire Nation believed that they had successfully wiped out all of the airbenders, the next Avatar in the cycle would be a waterbender (which ended up being Korra). That is why the Water Tribe raids happened, for 60 years to no avail. Naturally the Fire Nation was confused, because they thought all possible airbending Avatars were dead and they never found any waterbending Avatar. Zuko thought that an airbender somehow survived and was really old (which now that I think about it, doesn’t make sense-wouldn’t it be more logical to assume the Avatar was now an earthbender? Even a waterbending Avatar would have been very, very old-if I were him, I would have thought it was Gran-Gran when I saw her.) Anyway, I wonder if Bumi himself ever went to look for the Avatar? He sure had a lot of time to think about it. He was also the only earthbender in The Order of the White Lotus-which was mainly people the perfect age to be possible Avatars. I don’t know. There are so many interesting things to think about with this show, that’s what’s so great about it-everything actually goes really deep and is super intricate.
Zuko didnt think the airbender was survive. He thinks the avatar is from water tribe. As you mention the avatar (from water tribe) must've be very old. That's why zuko shocked why the avatar is still a child. And to think if the avatar is from earth kingdom, the fire nation are in war in earth kingdom directly because they the only one who still stand against the fire nation. If the avatar is from earth kingdom,he probably would appear defend his nation from fire kingdom attack.

i realized years later that it wasn't tests or to train the avatar, bumi just wanted Aang to remember his old friend, every scene he's in he's putting on a show, probably acting exactly how he used to in their youth, but Aang just couldn't catch on till all his "tests" started making sense, or really, not making sense cause after all, Bumi is a mad genius
_The Earth Chakra deals with survival and blocked by fear_ This series world building is truly mad genius. I think that's one of the reason earth bender like Bumi have longevity. He's Fearless.
I started feeling so warm and cosy inside when Aang and bumi hugged! He must’ve felt so happy that at least one person survived from when he was frozen!
you know with Bumi living over a hundred years and Toph living well into Korra's age, not to mention both of them retaining a great amount of physical capabilities as well as their skills in bending, I'm starting to think earth-benders just naturally age better
@@wesleyjohnson2861 Well he was about 66 when he died, so 166 years. Not sure if Kiyoshi is average for Avatar lifespans or if she is an outlier though. So Aang could be anywhere from a comfortable average for Avatar age, to a bit on the short side. Even if he didn't get to experience all of it.
You if you think about Bumi knew Aang when they were kids and Aang was 12 and I think Bumi was about the same age, if it took 100 years before Aang was awakened. So that means he is over 112 years old and has a six pack. Bumi may be crazy but he really takes care of himself.
The circus music theme song playing around Bumi is so well written timed and it just sells how he’s a total mad man but the kind you just love to see! Seriously the writing for the last air bender original series & books was so well done! They took the wise old man trope and took it a completely different direction that was excellent!
@@user-sf9hu2xd8j No, he's saying Toph has more _skill_ . Kuvira has far more finesse with metal than we've ever seen with Toph, but there's no question she would be bodied by Toph in a fight because of the power discrepancy. Toph can likely match Bumi, but aside from barely holding the library up that one time she's never shown herself capable of the same casual strength we see Bumi use in active combat.
That might be true, but Toph still could be able to beat him. When it comes to raw power Azula is superior to Zuko, yet he was clearly superior during their final battle. I think Toph would win against Bumi.
this is my opinion but bumi will win in my OPINION because he has experiance with other benders its been 100 years yes if your going to say toph was trained by moles that does mean she has experiance yes there were the original benders but they trained her only bending and bumi can destroy fire nation tanks idk with only earth bending sure toph can but its way easier for her because she know how to metal bend thats my OPINION
I believe they did. When Team Avatar went to find Uncle Iroh, and Toph met Bumi in the White Lotus Camps. It didn't really show the duel but it showed a little scene of them fighting with boulders levitating in the air.
no he doesn't? he starts by asking the bad guy to please be good, then he gets into a very straightforward bending battle mostly using "typical airbender tactics", and then he becomes a near mindless spirit of wrath in the avatar state and lays down a beating through raw power. Where's the genius? I don't even see average intelligence.
Killing Ozai would create a martyr. Aang was very wise to stick to his stance and end the fight on his own terms rather than bend to the advice of his past lives.
I have a lot of respect toward Bumi for staying alive for so long to eventually reunite with his close friend and help him on his mission to complete his Avatar training to save the world.
One of my favorite moments in the series. It tough to compare both Bumi and Toph for me. Toph ran away from home at the age of six and ended up losing her way in a cave until being discovered by badger moles, where she than began her training in earth bending with them. Aside from having acute hearing and the ability to feel others emotions, she picked up on the training pretty quickly. Not too sure of Bumi's back story, but in terms of strength it's difficult to say. But he was able to single handedly take down a group of fire nation soldiers, in addition to removing their machine industry factories to reclaim his kingdom.
At 3:55, you can see Bumi land the way an airbender would; spinning to slow down his momentum. Just some nice foreshadowing of how he’s in the White Lotus, a group that transcends the divisions of the four nations, and learns from each other.
Interesting touch. Aang has a slight advantage over everyone he faces in the show because no one has been trained to fight against air bending techniques for generations. I’m sure there used to be techniques and ‘how tos’ when it came to what you should do when you face off against an air bender in battle, but they’re no longer being taught. Bumi knew exactly what to do against Aang. He’s probably the only Earth bender left who knows how to fight against an opponent that can fly.
Or anyone, really who knows, not just earthbenders... I guess Pathik would also know, since he grew up with the airbenders, but then again, he's really not a fighter at all
i did like that the live action bumi was a lot more bitter/implied to have gone a little mad for having to fight off the fire nation for 100 years, that made things really sad but realistic
Maybe it's like comparing two ends of a snake's tongue. If they had kept going with the Last Airbender then it'd work if Toph spent some time with Bumi and she could learn to think like a mad genius too.
It's crazy cause Bumi isn't even the oldest. Kyoshi lived until 230, some guy in the Kyoshi novel is thousands of years old and Guru Patik is at least 150. Not to mention Sozin who had a kid at 85 and was originally implied to live until 155 which was later changed to 102
King Bumi: I m the most powerful earthbender you'll ever see. Toph:No offense, Pops. But just because you're as old as dirt doesn't mean you know how to bend it. 😂😂
The new show robbed us of this beautiful moment at 5:25. It was one of my favorite moments. After feeling so alone and having lost everyone. He finally had a friend back. It’s my biggest gripe with the new show. They did so many other things right. Just not this 😭
Inevitably, he did think like a mad genius. He did what every single Avatar and guru and teacher told him he couldn't, he saved the world and spared Ozai's life.
Cory TheGoat HE never invaded it; his daughter OCCUPIED it. Bumi had the whole thing under plan, if you saw the episode after secret tunnel (can’t remember which one it is) he talks about neutral Jin I think it was (apologies if that isn’t the name; I’m still a new fan) which is doing nothing and waiting for the right moment to strike. I believe the fire lord knew this and knew of bumi’s power and that is why he never invaded it himself. You may think it’s because he believes it’s too easy but, just as he did with zuko, I’m not sure he cared about her and as a result used her to see how difficult it was and would honestly care less if she died. Edit; by her I meant azula (though u guess you could have guessed that 😅)

Where's the genius? I don't even see average intelligence.
@FullTimeSlacker he learns a forgotten fifth element called energy bending
Killing Ozai would create a martyr. Aang was very wise to stick to his stance and end the fight on his own terms rather than bend to the advice of his past lives.

100 years Bro. No one is recognizable after 100 years. Especially if your last memory was y'all as kids.
“Choose wisely” he knew exactly what Aang was thinking in that moment

I guess Pathik would also know, since he grew up with the airbenders, but then again, he's really not a fighter at all

Cory TheGoat HE never invaded it; his daughter OCCUPIED it. I believe the fire lord knew this and knew of bumi’s power and that is why he never invaded it himself. You may think it’s because he believes it’s too easy but, just as he did with zuko, I’m not sure he cared about her and as a result used her to see how difficult it was and would honestly care less if she died.
