From another comment section: When zuko meets iroh again at the white lotus camp, he is literally the little soldier boy who came home. The soldier that was saved. The soldier that Iroh thought he had lost.

How did Nickelodeon make such a perfect show in every way imaginable? History, soundtrack, storyline, characters, development. This show is everything!
Yeah it wasn't Nickelodeon. It was the actual team of creators that Nickelodeon payed to make it. That's the thing about TV shows and movies and whatnot; people tend to give credit to the companies when they're just the piggy bank financing things. It's the, you know, actual creators who are entirely responsible. I don't mean to come off as rude, by the way.
"AND THEN WHAT? YOU NEVER THINK THESE THINGS THROUGH, YOU HAD HIM AND THEN YOU HAD NO WHERE TO GO. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPEND AT THE NORTHPOLE" "I WOULD HABE FIGUERED IT OUT" "NO IF HIS FRIENDS HADNT SAVED YOU, YOU WOULD HAVE FROZEN TO DEATH. ITS TIME FOR YOU TO LOOK INWARDS AND BEGIN ASKING YOURSELF THE BIG QUESTION, WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU WANT?"
Mako Imawatsu voiced Iroh up until "The Tale of Iroh", passing away from cancer not long after. His understudy, Greg Baldwin, would take up the role from there till the end of the series. Baldwin has said that he often gets requests from fans to sing "Leaves From The Vine." Baldwin always refuses, saying that it is Mako's song to sing, and he won't do it.

@@starlegends3092 Wow, you really know how to destroy an epic quote that actually makes a lot o sense! Stop beeing that guy pal, probably no one likes you
So I was thinking about that letter. We see flashbacks of Zuko, Lu Ten, and Iroh on Ember Island and it makes him seem like a joyful, fun father/uncle. But this letter makes it seem like Iroh and Lu Ten’s relationship was extremely formal, barely any emotion conveyed in it. I may be reading it wrong 🤷♂️
maxmitch96, I don’t think their relationship was formal because Iroh is incredibly sad and informal about his sadness, which he wouldn’t do if he were to honor his son’s memory, but either way seems right and if you’re correct that’d be pretty rad to see
Maxmitch96: I read the letter as a loyal son wanting to do his father proud. "General Iroh" and "Uncle Iroh" were two different people. I imagine he was strict as a fire nation general since that was the mainstream attitude at the time, but you wouldnt see a son who hates their father write them this letter. I feel Lu Ten was an admirable bender who really made "General Iroh" proud, and though they may not have had the loving relationship Zuko and Iroh had I can definitely see a more formal General Iroh being outspoken and proud of his accomplished son, probably often bragging how the fire nation was in good hands with him next in line and Lu Ten after. And then that all changed when Lu Ten died. His talented accomplished son died, and we know what happened from there. I think Irohs sadness doesnt stem from his son being "gone" gone. He has had time to accept that. I feel he is sad because he never had the time to help him down a different path, and loved him in a way he would have really wanted to love his son (the way he loves Zuko) and not the traditional fire nation esteemed father/esteemed son relationship they probably did have. I dont see Iroh being a bad father in any way, or having a strictly formal relationship with any of his family. I do see him being more strict, and "fire nationy" but I feel behind closed doors Iroh was more of a chilled father then some others were. Still the values him and Lu Ten held during their time together probably affected Iroh in his later years. No matter how much he learned and redeemed himself, guided and taught others, he could never truly help Lu Ten any further then carrying his memory with him.
Happy birthday my son. If only I could have helped you...Leaves from the vine Falling so slow Like fragile tiny shells Drifting in the foam Little soldier boy Come marching home Brave soldier boy Comes marching home
What would happen if someone sang this song to a crowd of BLM protesters? Would they stop chanting and start singing together? Would it change their perspective and / or reality for their movement?
That moment you realize that Uncle Iroh wasn’t staying by Zuko’s side to help him capture the Avatar... he was there to keep Zuko safe, he was like a son to him, and he didn’t want to loose another one.
@@ditzy_girl-readyditzyness96I bawled my eyes out at that bit. Now that I think of it, the most I’ve cried from in the show is because of the touching moments between Iroh and Zuko. Everyone deserves to have an Uncle Iroh in their life
The reason Iroh was yelling so hard at Zuko under Lake Laogai? He already buried one son who was obsessed with the honor of the Fire Nation. He didn’t want to bury another.
My grandma passed this morning. Not like blood grandma, but someone who I looked after for quite some time, and she in turn looked after me. When we first met 7 years ago, I had nothing to my name but a bag of clothes, and a history of partying, drinking, and do nothings. I'm here 7 years later with my wife, my son, and so much more than I could've ever dreamed of owning. I got here because despite who I was then, Grandma took a bet on me. She walked with me, guided me. Helped me restore my relationship with my parents. To me, she was my Uncle Iroh. My favorite memories of her where when we'd wake early, and I'd fix her a bagel and tea, and then myself some tea. And we would just talk. Morning after morning we'd talk. Now everytime I drink tea, ill think of her. I love you grandma. And I'll miss you. Always.
I’m already getting teary eyed just listening to this music. Hearing your story with your grandma is not making this easy for me; you’re making me cry, man. 😭

As a kid watching this show I didn’t think too much about what iroh said through out the whole show because I thought he was boring but I just finished watching this show again and I’m not ngl irohs quotes have so much meaning and depths I’ve never realised how a cartoon show and characters can make me cry. I hope when I have kids of my own I’ll show them this show. Thank you uncle iroh for your wise word.
Ok I was having a good nontear filled afternoon before this video popped into my recommend and you... You had the audacity to post this comment and make me feel even more
It makes it even harder to watch this episode for me because you can hear him struggling to speak. It really hurts to know Mako was in so much pain just to say goodbye to us.
Leaves from the vine Falling so slow Like fragile tiny shells Drifting in the foam Little soldier boy Come marching home Brave soldier boy Comes marching home Those leaves did grow From branches overgrown Drifting slowly down Resting on the loam Little soldier boy Taken from home Forced to fight a war That's not his own Ash in the snow Falling so slow Like fragile, broken hearts With no place to go. Little soldier boy Come marching home Brave soldier boy Come marching home He thought he knew What he was fighting for, But the sight of blood Made him question war. Poor soldier boy Cold and alone, Bombs fall like rain, He's all alone. Leaves from the vine Falling so slow Like fragile tiny shells Drifting in the foam Little soldier boy says "Carry me home" Sleeping soldier boy Is carried home
While it showed us the dangers of the world it also showed us the beauty as well it showed us to open our minds to others and for us to better understand those around us not just people but nature too and through that we gained wisdom so that we can help others understand the way things are instead of what they seem
This show was a experience. I still don't think I've ever found a piece of media with character writing as consistently good as avatar, and I've always been a very avid reader, so it's not from lack of competition.
@@Parmesan_Seeker what sets ATLA appart is the consistency of its quality. There's several works like the Sword of Truth where in the author seems to just reach out to you and share his philosophy in a brilliant way but those moments are rather rare. ATLA does it more consistently it feels like. It's odd that a kid show does such a great job in not in telling a story. But also sharing deeper meanings like the impact of war and such. Another story from an odd angle that turned out to be a gift that kept on giving was the web novel: A practical guide to evil Do wrong right It's available on WordPress for anyone interesting, it starts a bit crude but as the story grows, the author does too. And as the author grows so does the world building leading up to a brilliant conclusion. Since you claim to be an avid reader I would definitely recommend.
**Old Man Zuko enters the Spirit World and meets his Uncle Iroh** Iroh: You may look like an elderly man. But to me, you will always be my impatient young nephew who cannot brew good tea.

I'm crying as I type this. This song just makes me think how in a few months I'll be starting my first job out of college. I'm growing up. I remember being a kid and seeing ATLA and then LOK. I didnt understand the song then but now that I am going to be a full fledged adult...I'm scared. But this song (especially this version) helps me realize its ok to be scared of growing up. It's ok to say goodbye to childhood. I can always revisit it later. When I have the time. Growing up is what we make of it. I have so many memories from my childhood that will stay with me as I graduate college, move into adulthood, start my life, start a family, travel. I'll always have the comfort of those memories

Honestly...this was propably the most touching moment in the Show. Either that or Iroh forgiving Zuko in Season 3... I loved it so much. Iroh is just the best fictional Character that ever existed...we all should be more like him. we all.
Everytime I hit replay, it has a different meaning to me. Iroh was undeniably one of if not, the best written character of an elderly man ever. His way of words, his wisdom, always have different meanings for every time you hear them. Especially for this song.
For additional feels, play at 0.75x speed 0:00 A door opens, and we see Zuko’s face, looking downcast. He sighs deeply and enters the room. 0:08 Cut to the bed, where Iroh is laying, looking weary and frail. 0:16 Iroh’s eyes open, and he looks over at his nephew, smiling. He beckons Zuko to sit by his bedside. His nephew does so, looking at his beloved uncle with despair as he takes his hand. 0:32 Iroh squeezes Zuko’s hand tightly. Zuko smiles slightly, squeezing Iroh’s hand in return. They look at each other lovingly, and an understanding passes between them. Iroh smiles once more, and closes his eyes, a peaceful look on his face. 0:47 Fade to a scene of Zuko, standing at the top of the steps of the courtyard of the Fire Nation palace, a coffin to his side. He is wearing white funeral clothing, and struggles to hold back tears. 1:02 The camera pans across the crowd gathered, showing that people from all four nations have come together to mourn Iroh. 1:10 Aang and the rest of the Gaang are shown standing next to Zuko. The Avatar glances at the Fire Lord, giving him a reassuring look. 1:17 The crowd has dispersed, and Zuko stands with only his friends. Wordlessly, they all embrace him as he begins crying. 1:32 Cut to Zuko kneeling beneath a tree, alone. He places a portrait of Iroh beneath the tree and lights two sticks of incense. Tears roll down his face as he looks at the portrait. 1:47 He starts to sing. “Leaves from the vine. Falling so slow, like fragile, tiny shells, drifting in the foam.” 2:02 Zuko continues singing as the camera pans upward, following the trail of incense smoke. The screen turns bright yellow for a moment, then fades into a shot of the spirit world. Iroh’s face emerges at the top of a verdant green hill, and he smiles happily. “Comes marching home” 2:17 Cut to a shot of Iroh gathered around a table with spirits, all chatting happily and laughing while he pours them tea. 2:33 Iroh is alone again, still sitting at his table. He takes a sip of tea and exhales deeply, setting down his cup and smiling serenely to himself. 2:47 Something out-of-frame catches his eye, and he turns to look. He smiles as he sees what it is, tears starting to stream down his face. He stands and turns toward it. 2:57 A close-up of Iroh’s tearful, smiling face. 3:00 The camera cuts to the approaching figure, revealing him to be Lu Ten, as he finally comes marching home.
Iroh sat alone, sadness had gripped his heart many times before as he watched his nephew grow. But this sadness was replaced by righteous anger, He had lost one son to The Fire Nation's damned conquest of a war; he would not lose another. And so, he trained, Lu Ten on his mind once more. He would not let Ozai send Zuko to die again, he refused.
I started watching this show when I was 7 years old, now I’m 20. I’ve watched it a thousand times. This is without I doubt, for me, the best TV show ever created. Woaw! How much I cried while listening to this. You did an incredible job!
I watched Avatar the last airbender years after Mako passed away and I wasn’t even aware of his passing, I'm just thankful for his contributions to creating such a wonderful character. Rest In Peace Mako, a little soldier is making his way home.
Avatar was something I had just watched a few months ago to get over the pandemic. It's a show that made me feel much better, troubling times, lost faith and a foreboding dread of wondering if there was a point in continuing. Avatar the last Airbender didn't just make me laugh it made me feel something deep down, it's thanks to this show and characters like Uncle Iroh and Prince Zuko that I began to find happiness again and motive to be a better person just like the two men I mentioned.
I first watched this show when going through the most intense heartbreak of my life, and it totally helped me. People look at you strange when you say that a cartoon helped you cope with grief, but those who know, know.
The song was written by mako it’s about his time in the Army. He wrote it once he found out he was dying from cancer this was his goodbye to us. RIP Mako truly unforgettable performance as Iroh.
@@LMG1792 Well sadly it wasn't written by Mako. Michael DiMartino (one of the creators of ATLA) is the lyricist. It's a common misconception that Mako wrote it.

I was crying during this video and I didn't know why. I love this show and I will to my dying day. Uncle Iroh:"I was never angry with you. I was sad because I thought you had lost your way." Thank you,Iroh.
It’s eerie and sad because Mako died shortly after, and yet we always cry everytime we hear him sing so gently “leaves from the vine” it’s just so sad to acknowledge the fact that Mako knew he was going to die shortly after
@@normanpotter5184He really did. In the sentence "little soldier boy", you can hear Iroh's voice breaking down - not because Mako was a great actor, but actually because he began crying while recording
This really should be in the live action remake of the Avatar the Last Airbender series. Maybe end of the tales of ba sing se stuff if they capped it off with Iroh's POV
I know I'm late to the fandom but I finished this show today. I can't stop crying. I related to Zuko so much from the beginning and seeing his triumphant, well earned character arc was just so hopeful and inspiring to me. It represented how I had been the same and my journey of healing. When Zuko came back and was hugged back by Uncle Iroh in the last season, I felt it was him, the soldier who had come home. I'm sorry for the rant but this show has really represented what healing and acceptance of yourself and others is so raw and real manner.
I just finished the show today and this was exactly what I thought while watching it, I really wish I had watched this show sooner because it’s really one of the best cartoons I’ve watched
'F' To the man who breathed life into the character that made me question the path I was taking in life and helped me become better for it. Today marks the 14th anniversary of Mako Iwamatsu's death. He was a prolific actor over the life of his career, doing what he loved until the day he could no longer. He was also an activist working to further Asian-American actors ability to work beyond stereotyped casting, and helped create the East West Players in 1965. In honor of his memory and the memorable characters he played enjoy a cup of tea today, and embrace the ones you love.
I'd say my favorites are Last Airbender, Attack on Titan, and Neon Genesis Evangelion. Seins;Gate, Clone Wars, and Legend of Korra are honorable mentions, but I have issues with them.
I adore the way it starts bare, picks up more and more as layers of instruments are added, and then becomes bare and poignant before lifting once more to feel full again. How each instrument adds its own emotion and holds its own significance in the full picture this song is painting leaves me in awe. I love the original version obviously, Mako’s voice and the emotion it holds, the softness of it and it’s brokenness, yet how it portrays a searingly beautiful sense of hope, but I feel this instrumental does well to hold its own, it manages to convey that same level of emotion and depth without ever needing words. It’s flow is full of both heartbreaking grief and overflowing hope. The lack of words allows you to fill that space with your emotions, it allows your thoughts to flow and ebb with the notes and honestly, I already thought this was one of the most beautifully composed songs ever but this orchestral version takes it to an entirely new level. Absolutely stunning
reading iroh's quotes while listening to this music is just heartwarming. Edit: wow thanks for the likes! just posted this weeks ago lol never had this many likes before.

*"To General Iroh: See you after we win the war. Your loyal son Lu Ten."*
He never came home....
*SOBBING LOUDLY*
maxmitch96, I don’t think their relationship was formal because Iroh is incredibly sad and informal about his sadness, which he wouldn’t do if he were to honor his son’s memory, but either way seems right and if you’re correct that’d be pretty rad to see
Maxmitch96: I read the letter as a loyal son wanting to do his father proud.
For some reason I read this and immediately thought of an AU where Iroh died instead and Lu Ten and he became the Iroh in the story

Always.

This show was not just a show.. it was more, it showed the dangers of this world while also not making it too dark for children. I love this show.
Another story from an odd angle that turned out to be a gift that kept on giving was the web novel:
A practical guide to evil
Do wrong right
It's available on WordPress for anyone interesting, it starts a bit crude but as the story grows, the author does too. And as the author grows so does the world building leading up to a brilliant conclusion. Since you claim to be an avid reader I would definitely recommend.

Avatar the last Airbender didn't just make me laugh it made me feel something deep down, it's thanks to this show and characters like Uncle Iroh and Prince Zuko that I began to find happiness again and motive to be a better person just like the two men I mentioned.
Wow bro, that's deep. That gave me the feels.
Me too
@@golden.fire.princess9653 Oh my God, your avatar picture is of Azula, she is my favorite character too. Cool, good for you girl. My fellow Azula fan.
I first watched this show when going through the most intense heartbreak of my life, and it totally helped me. People look at you strange when you say that a cartoon helped you cope with grief, but those who know, know.
I can do this.

@@stfu_ham3952 :( same, Uncle Iroh
Showing emotion makes you even more a man.
The song was written by mako it’s about his time in the Army. He wrote it once he found out he was dying from cancer this was his goodbye to us. RIP Mako truly unforgettable performance as Iroh.
That makes me want to cry even more 😢.
@@LMG1792 Well sadly it wasn't written by Mako. Michael DiMartino (one of the creators of ATLA) is the lyricist. It's a common misconception that Mako wrote it.

I'm crying so bad
That makes the song so much better and so much worse because now whenever I hear it I'm gonna remember that it was Mako's swan song and it'll make me cry even more
I was crying during this video and I didn't know why. I love this show and I will to my dying day.
Uncle Iroh:"I was never angry with you. I was sad because I thought you had lost your way."
Thank you,Iroh.
R.I.P Mako and Lu Ten
It’s eerie and sad because Mako died shortly after, and yet we always cry everytime we hear him sing so gently “leaves from the vine” it’s just so sad to acknowledge the fact that Mako knew he was going to die shortly after
To me in a way he put his soul in to this song
@@normanpotter5184He really did. In the sentence "little soldier boy", you can hear Iroh's voice breaking down - not because Mako was a great actor, but actually because he began crying while recording
This really should be in the live action remake of the Avatar the Last Airbender series. Maybe end of the tales of ba sing se stuff if they capped it off with Iroh's POV
No one but *MAKO* can do Iroh justice in my opinion.
But yes I agree 150%
@@zsu-23-4shilka2 If they were going to then the must use Mako's recording. This is Mako's song.
Just finished this series yesterday. This is one of the only songs in all the movies/ shows I’ve watched to make me tear up.
'F'
To the man who breathed life into the character that made me question the path I was taking in life and helped me become better for it.
That was probably the first sincere and moving "press F" I've ever read. Thank you. That was beautiful.

Nah, he's zuko's dad for sure. That's a title you earn, not one you gain from having a kid.

"If any question why we died, tell them, because our fathers lied."
-Rudyard Kipling,
writing from the perspective of his son who he lost in WWI. Kipling had urged his son to enter military service and felt personally responsible for his son's eventual death in combat.
Didn't he write that poem about the steam ships, that Sting had a set of singers feature in his debut of the Last Ship?
@@swvwc8393 I am not familiar with the Last Ship but the excerpt of the poem I posted is from Kipling's 'Epitaphs of the War'. Where he wrote from the perspective of the men dying in the trenches of WWI.
Another example of him expressing his grief over his son's passing can be found in his poem 'The Children.'
"That flesh we had nursed from the first in all cleanness was given
To corruption unveiled and assailed by the malice of Heaven-
By the heart-shaking jests of Decay where it lolled in the wires-
To be blanched or gay-painted by fumes- to be cindered by fires-
To be senselessly tossed and retossed in stale mutilation
From crater to crater. For that we shall take expiation.
But who shall return to us our children?"

I know this song is sad for many, which makes sense considering the context of Mako writing it and its context in the show, but honestly I feel a peace and serenity when listening to this song. Like I could meditate for hours while this plays in the background. Like I myself could enjoy a cup of tea while watching the sun rise at dusk, or set at dawn. We just need to remember that Iroh found his new son in Zuko and that Mako is resting peacefully. Play this song and close your eyes while thinking about what makes you happy, no matter how minor that might be, and remember to rest your mind.
