@@YourAngel The world would be a wonderful place if we all had an Uncle Iroh in our lives. Someone who would show us how good we can be. Someone who would catch us when we stumble on the path.
I think Iroh's story is so powerful, and that's why it hits us so hard every time. His son died in a war that Iroh was flourishing in. In suffering, he realized that every single thing he thought was important to his name or his legacy didn't mean anything if so many people suffered for it. Iroh gets justifiably called a war criminal often lol and he deserves it. If we could see his horrific past actions, we may not find him so endearing. But there's something VITAL in watching someone like Iroh scratch and claw his way out of the evil that he were born into, and then turn around and pull others out with him. He never makes excuses, his remorse and shame never lessen, he never asks anyone not to bring up his past crimes. He just steps up and IS a better man than he was, he became the example of the unconditional love and guidance that he never got.
The thing that always gets me in this scene is that when Mako is crying while singing he’s actually crying not acting. He cried because he realized the cancer would overtake him soon and he was scared. That’s why it breaks my heart every time I listen to this.
"This is just a Nickelodeon show." -Not just any show -A Show that showed triumph and failure -A show that showed emotion and change -A show that show corrupted nations and war, death and love -Not just a Nickelodeon show Our childhood
this show is amazing because it doesn’t necessarily show the “bad guys” as the bad guys if you know what i’m saying it shows that people can change and this show accomplished that so well.
@@missdifficulty905 iroh would have never broken his seige of ba sing se, so i assume he would have fell the city and the world would look vastly different.
mat d he wouldn’t of retreated his siege of ba sing se, ozai wouldn’t have taken the throne, azulon probably would have lived a few more years, and iroh wouldn’t have realized how war is pointless
Iroh would still be in line as the fire lord therefor azulan wouldn't have told Ozai to sacrifice his own and therefore Ursa wouldn't have helped Ozai poison Azulan . So iroh may not have been fire lord just yet because Azulan would still be alive so Aang would have to defeat Azulan who is at old age and possibly Iroh. But I think Iroh had connections with the Spirits before his son died so I think Iroh wouldn't have been cold and heartless and probably would have slowly realized or help Aang restore balance.
To this day, the current voice actor who took over the mantle for Iroh's voice outright refuses to sing Leaves from the Vine, stating "that's Mako's song". No, you're crying.
I still singing it in honer of mako cuz that made me cry and now I'm crying more and I can't find the original song on spotify from the avatar so now when I want to cry I watch this- rip mako your the man-
Then you realize that Picture of his son Is actually a representation of what Younger Mako the voice actor to uncle iroh Really looked like and knowing he cried while singing this
Zuko was like his son too, there's a scene/flashback when Zuko remember his childhood (maybe the beach episode) and he was in Iroh's arms and Lu Ten playing in the sand.
Mako actually recorded this a few weeks before he died. His voice is cracking because he was sick and had come to terms with his own death and knew he was going to die soon. So much depth to this scene
What gets me the most about this short is him singing the song to the upset child first. Using something that was so painful, and is painful for him to soothe the pain of someone else.
I am crying at five in the morning, that scene hits me every time even more emotional when you realize what the message next to the drawing says, "General Iroh, see you after the victory. Your loyal son, Lu Ten". I'm glad they took the time to use a real language instead of coming up with the gibberish language like other shows. You can tell they really did their research. Also, Lu means "road, street, victory" while Ten means "to soar, to fly"
Unrealistic They didn't start crying after hearing "Leaves from the vine" I know it is not normal for one to break into emotion because of a single line but someone said the magic words
Once a wise man said... "Leaves from the vine Falling so slow Like fragile tiny shells Drifting in the foam Little soldier boy Come marching home Brave soldier boy Comes marching home"
That song makes me think of the baby of mine that I never got to meet. My wife miscarried and it tore me up for a while. I can't help but wish I could've gotten to meet them, it was our second child so knowing that my son was going to have a little brother or sister I was so happy. The line "if only I could have helped you" just punches me in the fucking gut everytime I hear it. I'm starting to cry just typing this out. ATLA was such a mature show and I think how it manages to hit these concepts is why it's been my favorite animated series ever since I first watched reruns on nickelodeon after school.
Mark Drake that’s a fact like Avatar the air bender is one of my favorite shows definitely on my list but if I had to chose a favorite male character hands down uncle iroh ❤️

Of every anime I had ever watched, of every show, every series, every movie None, have been able to make me cry upon hearing just the first few notes, and by the middle, I'm a crying wreck. @Hayden Abfier ooookay then. I didnt really get a read on exactly how long he died after that song. Damn, the poor man was in his final hours and he gave us that song. God bless that man
It felt like a punch to the gut, man. What a freaking great short. I've never called a punch "great" before, but... OG Nickelodeon knew where it was at. With this show, at least.
Gets even sadder when stop to think that the song is about how he couldn't help his son that died in the war and now his hole life revolves around helping others and especially help Zuko find his place in the world and the good in his heart
No he's still crying because he's trying to be a professional voice actor and put himself in the moment of his character Iroh. Give him more respect than that.
I never put it together until now, but Iroh is honoring his sons birthday in the city where Lu Ten died. I can see why it might be even more emotional.
To make it sadder is what i found out from the other comments Mako was uncle irohs voice actor and he was dying of cancer at the time, three days after he sang this he passed away And that picture was a painting of him when he was younger
I've listened to this maybe a hundred times and the way he sings "little soldier boy, come marching home" with a broken voice and sobs escaping makes me full on ugly cry. Every. Single. Time
Leaves from the vine Falling so slow Like fragile tiny shells Drifting in the foam Little soldier boy Come marching home Brave soldier boy Comes marching home Those leaves did grow From branches overgrown Drifting slowly down Resting on the loam Little soldier boy Taken from home Forced to fight a war That's not his own Ash in the snow Falling so slow Like fragile, broken hearts With no place to go. Little soldier boy Come marching home Brave soldier boy Come marching home He thought he knew What he was fighting for, But the sight of blood Made him question war. Poor soldier boy Cold and alone, Bombs fall like rain, He's all alone. Leaves from the vine Falling so slow Like fragile tiny shells Drifting in the foam Little soldier boy says "Carry me home" Sleeping soldier boy Is carried home
This scene explains so much of the character of Iroh. He feels responsible for sending his son to battle. He couldn't protect him because he was too engulfed in the conflict. He lost his son because he wasn't there. That's why he is indifferent to the fire nation's goals, and more importantly, why he will never give up on Zuko. Of all the forgiveness he offers to those around him, he cannot forgive himself, and he is a better man for it. Zuko and Iroh are 2 of the best written animated characters of all time, and definitely number 1 and 2 in a kids show.
It also hits hard that you realize Iroh’s son would have been the Firelord after the title was passed to Iroh and Iroh passed it on to him. Not only the son, but the future and rightful leader of the Fire Nation
Iroh was so weak and stupid. He let his emotions cloud hos judgement, instead of just killing Zuko, Azula, and Ozai, who were evil, or at risk of becoming evil. The white lotus also didn't fight in the war until after 100 years. And Iroh put his health at risk by being overweight, and thereby not being able to protect to world for as long as he could have.
@@ncard00 Lol what? Iroh helped Zuko change for the people, he stood up to his sister and father and became a very good ruler after. Fuck you on about?
I actually agree. Not too long ago my grandmother passed away, and even though I didnt know her that well my mother did; I felt sad knowing that my mother most likely was depressed that she wasn't there in her final moments. We've been living in the U.S. for the past 3 yrs, while our other family members remain at our home country. Apparently my grandma was already bedridden for a while before she actually passed away, and through out that whole times my mom was internally struggling, though I didn't notice it at the time. When the day came my mom was sad, but was glad my grandmother was no longer suffering. In a way you could say, she'd rather let my grandma rest in peace, than letting her live the rest of her days stuck in a bed still suffering.
It's kind of obvious. Humans are social creatures that mostly act on emotions. Even the most rational and cynical people can't help but feel even a bit sad from moments like this, simply because of their human nature
its the honesty. they didnt make an highly emotional episode, they didnt made an overly dramatic scene, we just followed Iroh trough a chill day where he helped everyone he could just to numb his biggest pain, thats how you made people cry, with just chill and clean honesty
Me going in: "I've watched this scene a ridiculous number of times. How many more times can I possibly tear up?" Me after 30 seconds: "At least one more..."

As I get older I understand more and more of the pain General Iroh feels in that moment, the more I understand, the more I empathize and the more I can’t help but tear up in honor of his fallen son. The war that was to be his pride took his son away from him and caused him such grief. The most tragic, but also impactful character, General Iroh
My Sister got a baby recently and i got to hold the baby. Watching this one after that happening it hurts even more, imagening that something like that could happen to this little baby ... "If only I could have helped you" Everything you need to know about Iroh is this sentence... his pain, kindness, drive, heart, motivation and believes. No other sentence ever painted a character a perfect as this one.
I never grew up with ATLA but I have watched it fully recently, Mako was an amazing actor and this actually put me off watching it for a couple days because it made me so emotional. To know this was the last thing he ever recorded and he didn't even see it air breaks my heart. Gone but never forgotten.
3:40 Mako Iwamatsu was the original voice actor for Uncle Iroh for the first 2 seasons of Avatar The Last Airbender. He's also who sang Leaves From The Vine before his passing. When he passed away, Greg Baldwin stood in his place as the voice of Uncle Iroh for the rest of the show. Despite requests from fans, Greg refuses to sing the song out of respect to Mako. Lots of love and respect to both of these voice actors. Uncle Iroh is a huge role to take on. ❤️
You're on point Sami. He was, in fact, a huge fan of Mako, and greatly respects him as something of a celebrity. He was never under his tutelage at all, and it's a shame. Not because Greg is a bad actor. Far from it. I think if Mako would have met Greg, or seen his performance moving forward, he'd be proud of him. Still, Greg is a good Iroh, a great Aku, and overall, swell person, occasionally dressing as Iroh for fun. But no. He'll never sing Leaves from the Vine. It is sacred.
Here I am, after all these years, and this scene still brings tears to my eyes. I cry for Iroh. I cry for Mako. I cry for all who lost their sons. I cry for all who lost themselves. I cry for myself.
It will get you everytime . Its more sad when you watch it and already know. Watching Iroh help all tbe different young men .. ainging the same song to the baby to cheer him up. Realizing he must have sung it to his son. You will fight the tears thru the whole short.

That's why Iroh is a beloved character and an amazing role model. If I ever have a son, I want them to look up to them

@@missdifficulty905 yup
mat d he wouldn’t of retreated his siege of ba sing se, ozai wouldn’t have taken the throne, azulon probably would have lived a few more years, and iroh wouldn’t have realized how war is pointless

In a way you could say, she'd rather let my grandma rest in peace, than letting her live the rest of her days stuck in a bed still suffering.
because it felt true, that feelin of losing someone dear is familiar to us all
It's kind of obvious.
How many more times can I possibly tear up?"

He was, in fact, a huge fan of Mako, and greatly respects him as something of a celebrity.
He was never under his tutelage at all, and it's a shame. Not because Greg is a bad actor. Far from it.

Still, Greg is a good Iroh, a great Aku, and overall, swell person, occasionally dressing as Iroh for fun. But no. He'll never sing Leaves from the Vine. It is sacred.
When Iroh starts to cry in the middle of the song, that’s not Mako acting. He genuinely broke down in the middle of singing his song. 😞
