SD-1 all day long! And the price can’t be beat
I like your approach to the sound. Just great.
This answered alot of my questions about both pedals it really is what you prefer the sound in your head that is great demo and testing and playing rock on!🤘🎸🤓
I own both and love both.... they are my go to's for sure.
I’ve never tried the Wylde overdrive because they’re hard to find these days but i have a boss Sd-1 and it nails the Zakk tone. Sd-1 is perfect
I´ve got the SD-1 (use it in front of a Marshall AFD100 Slash head) already, got it pretty cheap and it does what I want it to do really well. The Wylde OD sounded almost identical, the differences are minute to me, so I wholeheartedly concur with your advise on just getting the cheaper one.
Love my ZW44 with my rev G, also has a switch inside to make it GT-OD
I have both and the sd-1 hasn’t got the mid hump that the mxr has. Also the mxr takes more bottom end away!. They almost sound the same here but in person standing within vicinity of the cab you can tell a distinct difference at least with my amps anyway. Cheers Leon Great demo mate.
I have a Wylde OD in front of my Peavey 6505 plus, the most glorious distortion sounds I’ve ever heard. Using an EVH 2x12 stock cab. The SD-1 is a legend. Used to have this in front of a Marshall JMP.
Both are great
For me they both are good at Rhythms...however the ZW44 seems to have a slightly flatter Eq curve...which I think makes it a little “thinner” for the leads.
The Boss SD-1 is the more affordable, but they're both good as I have used both at different occasions.
Been using an sd1 on and off since I was a teenager. Can't be beat imho. And since I'm in my 40s now, I need all the extra hair I can have!LOL btw, thanks for using real world settings for the demo. No one uses these with high drive/low level like a lot of demos. Cheers. Live your vids, bro.
I have both. The ZW seems to be a little more bass heavy/fuller, but the sd1 is tighter and adds some highs, which I like for drop tunings. Sd1 wins for the price
Yay, overdives into high gain!
Made wanna get one!!!
Great video.
I like em both but my choice is the mxr
You're played great Bro, I love sound.
thanks so much!
I actually just grabbed a ZWOD off a dude NIB for $50 to use with my new lil Fender Blues Jr, just to have some boost. It sounded a bit shit, kind of just a bit fuzzy, and the boost was not super warm. Today, however, I updated my pedal board for my Main rig, which is a Dual Recto, and it sounds amazing. Really tight, the overall response is much much better. I'm impressed, and after just a few hours, that's for sure going to be on for all my metal playing, makes the amp ten times better. Cheers, great channel man, its gotta be brutal having to try to find a New thing every day to make a clip about.
Hey man , can you share your eq settings with us on that dsl please ?
Love your videos man
The SD-1 is my favorite OD pedal, put simply, it just works. Have yet to get a bad result from it, regardless of the amp its driving. Cool comparison!
cuts too much bass frequencies on an 800 though
@@theavgblueberry4489 I had a JCM800ZW that I used with a Boss SD-1 for years and there was never a lack of low end. That thing was an absolute monster.
@low_e_music depends on the speaker you're using and how much bass you want at the end of the day.
Just wish there was a mini version on the boss sd1
I had them both but traded the MXR. It was a little too harsh. I then modded the SD-1 to make it a bit smoother. I still prefer a simple clean boost like the BOSS GE-7 with a nice mid-range peak and a slight bump on the volume slider. Bought a Kemper and now I'm in the process of selling all of my amps and pedals.
I actually prefer both of them on at the same time!! 🤘🏻🔥
👍SD-1 & MARSHALL'S, great with old GIBSON Tweed amps, etc......
I have a ceriatone amp ordered for almost a year. Should be here soon. They told a overdrive pedal will not be needed. We shall see!
Personally, I own both. None of them disappoint. But, if you don't want to spend that much and still have a killer tone, SD-1 is the way to go. On top of that, the tones for different styles you can get with this pedal are amazing. It's a classic, and it has beautifully survived the test of time.
I have an SD-1 and when you turn the Drive all way down is like a transparent clean boost! I prefer it with the Drive at 9 o'clock, Level full and Tone at 11 o'clock in the Crunch channel of my Engl Screamer 50 for 80s metal tones! The SD-1 is more "American" and the TS-9 is more NWOBHM with the lower mids (think SD-1=Ratt, TS-9=Black Sabbath).
i run the gain at 9oclock to, seems to thicken up the sound a tad
Hi mate, Brilliant Video, Love both of these Pedals, sold my Boss years ago, regret doing that but I did buy the MXR Wylde OD when they first came out, absolutely Love it, probably because it does sound like the Boss.
Both of these Pedals are awesome, I do like the MXR graphics.
Take care,
Melbourne.
Graphic eq is amazing in front of amps!
Leon Todd, One of the few Pedals I've not tried, I guess the Mesa Mark 5 sounds Awesome and as you'd know if you don't already have one hidden somewhere, they have an EQ Stage.
I forgot to mention Killer Playing!!!
drop d,finally.
the zw pedal seems more focused and the sd-1 maybe a little fuzzy but still tight if that makes sense.
MXR rules!
I have 2 versions of the MXR Zakk Wylde overdrive and a 40th Anniversary sd1. Love them all, but the mxr is a little thinner sounding. I love Zakks sound when he was doing Pride and glory so for me the sd1. Warm and fat!
Pride and Glory is a bit overlooked these days, Zakk was on fire around that era.
Love the sd-1 the different years MIJ have different components my favorite is the 1981 with army green caps and rare clipping diodes, my 1983 Sd-1 sounds really good to as does my long dash OD-1, I have a first batch ZW OD and that is also good, hard to beat in front of Marshalls and Soldano’s
Sweet collection!
I have 7 SD1s from different years love anything pre 95, and even better pre 89-90, still had green caps, after 1990 i think had grey caps. My favorite is my 89 first of MIT.
I personally would take SD because of price *cries in poor*
I play my Fender RW Tele with both the SD-1 and the ZW-44 OD in front of my Fender Blues Jr. amp...I use the ZW to sculpt the sound and the SD-1 to boost the signal, and even if the two are buffered pedals they do a great job. I prefer the Mxr because it's more edgy and hi-fi against the SD-1
When he turned them both on at the same time! 💀 🤘
Thanks for the comparison. I've been really happy with my stock SD-1 through my 1988 Marshall JCM 800 2204 with a 90's 4x12 (G12T75) cab and have wondered if another overdrive pedal could do better, but I think the SD-1 is probably the best there is. Thanks again!
hi man...thx for the info, but what do you think about boss od3?
Boss SD-1 for me!
Up the Weagles!
The Sd-1 had a little more low mids. Slightly thicker, tiny bit congested. Thought they were almost the same, but the MXR seemed to have a little more character.
Mxr sounded thin when it boosted an amp. SD1 for me.
SD-1 is the one pedal I won’t part with.
Cool! have SD-1, don’t need to buy MXR. Already got a blues driver though.
SD-1 sounds more organic to my ears the MXR Zakk sounds more aggressive or more modern Metal Ozzy vs BLS era Zakk basically
Having owned both a couple times, I like the SD1 better by quite a margin.
Wylde overdrive always seemed to thin out the tone.
I just bought an SD-1 because of you using it and in the Axe Fx stuff and I love it! Especially since my OD808 blew up. I put it in front of my 6505 and it sounds great. I will try it in front of my Dual Recto once i get it fixed. Its barely passing a signal through it? I have a Wylde OD i need to dig out as well and fix.
The SD-1 is wicked with both those amps, such a great pedal for little money.
Leon, have you ever tried two SD-1 pedals in front of an amp? I think I read once a while back that Criss Oliva used two SD-1s in front of his amps for his lead tone in Savatage. Personally, I have the SD-1 and love it as a cranked clean boost. That said, I liked the SD-1 more with the Marshall than the Boogie and the Wylde OD sounded better with the Boogie than the Marshall. Just my opinion.
Now that I searched it, Criss did use two SD-1s, both cranked with one tone knob cranked and the other tone knob all the way down. There's some talk that with his Marshall and/or Laney amps, he was only using them clean. This would mean that his rhythm and lead tones came strictly from the SD-1 pedals. Crazy.
That's super cool. I absolutely love Criss and Savatage so i'll have to try that.
Cool! have mxr, don’t need to buy SD-1. Still need a blues driver though.
I like them both stacked with the dsl, but if i had to choose 1 it would be the mxr. I remember the day they anounced the wylde overdrive i bought the first edition. Since then ive probably gone through 3. However since then ive discovered the xotic BB preamp and of course the maxon od808,wich i think doing the whole “boosting” thing much more to my liking.
confusing as to which is currently on without looking at the LED
The Wylde sounded just slightly more open
Sexed the Marshall right up... but too much of a good thing on the Recto.
Boss
Boss was slightly fuzzy MXR was slightly brighter is all I can hear both sound great
SD-1 is the original sounds great🎸
I’ve owned both but one thing I am quick to point out is the Boss has a buffer and MXR doesn’t. Not a big deal especially how you were running them. But to me I liked the Boss better which is why I still own one. That said the SD-1 is Roland/Boss version of the Ibanez/Maxon TS-808 tubescreamer. Roland owned the rights for symmetrical clipping so Maxon did asymmetrical clipping to avoid any patent laws. When Boss came around to build pedals they were forced to do symmetrical clipping because of their own patent, Ibanez/Maxon owned asymmetrical clipping patent at that point.
Very interesting, thanks for weighing in with that. You can mod an SD-1 to TS specs fairly easily AFAIK
Leon Todd Buyanalogman.com has Boss mods. They offer to do a mod where you can switch between the two.
www.analogman.com/boss.htm#form
Hi there ! Excuse me, at minute 2:12 you said “Marshall red line “ , it means you activated Marshall overdrive and sd1 overdrive , both ? Thanks mate
yes
Hey Leon you should demo the new version of his overdrive. It’s called the MXR Berzerker Overdrive. It has less gain and is more transparent in my opinion. I think you’d really dig it.
Very curious to try that one.
An sd1 in front of the crunch channel of an SLO is the god tone
Mxr sounds tighter and more refined. Doesn't color your tone as much as the boss. Which l prefer.
thats exactly what i was trying to say but couldnt find the words. alot of od pedals color the sound too much.
I like the SD-1 Zakk made a lot of good music with the SD-1.
Oath
Marshall low gain crunch > ZW44 rhythm add sd1 for lead
the Marshall Dsl sounds so much better than mesa
SD-1, from 1986!
Seems like the mxr is less hairy and cuts more bass
I prefer the Marshall with the SD-1
SD 1 works well especially with marshall
Classic combination right there
To me the SD-1 took away just the right amount of low end and just nicely cleaned things up while adding gain, the MXR took away a little too much and was thinner in comparison. I already have the MXR, but this comparison makes me want a SD-1!
MXR M193 GT-OD
I have a Randall Diavlo 45 and can't get a good metal sound by using the overdrive channel. Wtf
Mxr has a hide switch jp2... change the pedal and no every now it
Kieth Olsen was the guy who hooked Zakk up with a JCM800 and Boss sd1 that John Syke's used, before this he was using Lee Jackson's effects rack which another producer had around and got fired by Ozzy who wanted John Sykes but ended up with the idea Kieth can ring the same tone and style John had to anyone who learned the songs they had already recorded before Zack actually came around..like a dozen guys Zakk was told he got the gig via Mark Wiess, took lessons for over a year to learn the songs on NO RESTT FOR THE WCKED, I confirmed this with Guitar Center in New Jersey where he studied...and after Zakk got the gig he ended up with all the credit, dont be surprised, Ozzy has a history of cheating the publishing credits, . (this is all news now after Olsen died..) Zakk was basically a poser and has been using biker thang to appear as a crook over to Dimebags world...who he in fact discoed before he died and Dime stopped talking to him.
So back to the future, been a rock star poser gets you (like a RUclipsr) allot of free stuff, even with your name on it.
I can believe all of this..except for Dime not taking to Zakk before his death.
@@Jimboishere11 no there was a time Dime told ppl zakk dissed him and called him up on it to ask what was up…zakk exaggerated their friendship, it was tongue and cheek, sort of ok, Dime loved randy rhoads but vinny and dime knew zakk was a poser but wanted to cross over to prove his beard biker tough guy image was and no longer his gimmick, the Olsen stories explain zakks life as ozzy ‘s guitar player and the frustration his childhood gf/wife barbera (worked at epiphone) helped zakk get through, in my opinion zakk has a very interesting story cause ppl who had a tone and style walked away from randy’s spot due to ozzy’s lack of contracts/guaranteed then dome poser comes along willing to do a cover band type huge gig but we talking randy rhoads and now he wants to do the same with dimebag? But the story will always always end in either a catastrophe or zakk will prevail into a good - great guitarists finally reaching a mature musical goal, respect etc regardless of Olsen’s story cause there was a price he paid as well..
But again, i will look to find the interview where dime said zakk dissed him at a show to make himself look better, dime thought it was a joke then started to realize he had to say something with out exposing his insecurities… was all true but whats not true is the zakk met him here and there after the 90s, zakk went after pantera and even guns n roses in the 80s, they agreed to hang out cause vinny and dime loved ozzy and rhoads way longer., i find it funny how all this compels me to contact vinny himself, the guys are down to earth so even you can contact rex and or vinny but remember that they dont talk to phil or zakk, atleast vinny for sure
@@mr.mikehunt4286 Vinny is dead mate. Only Phil and Rex left. Sadly 😞
@@Jimboishere11 i was reffering to his video here ruclips.net/video/Fs7PNJy-c3w/видео.html
is the sd-1 MIJ??
MIT
Sound very close, it’s just the eq. It’s as if you have one pedal, the Boss tone is when your at middle-neck pickup, while MXR is while on bridge pickup.
Hello , is this Boss Japan or Taiwan?
MIT
@@LeonTodd Ok Leon because the comparaison with the Japan it's gonna be different.
mxr rules
I don't know why people always put the level on full and the gain on zero, I match them to the amp I'm using. Level on 1/2 to 3/4 is enough on any Marshall for playing rock or metal, also Maxon OD808 is better than both of these.
To me the MXR has a little more grit.
mmmm mxr para mi gusto es mas atractivo!!
Mxr
Great shootout, but I dislike the sound of the Recto immensely. No offense intended to those that love the Recto. Enjoy yourselves. I'm just more of a Marshall guy I guess.
EDIT: Lol, you forgot to turn off the ZW-44 at one point, and had both on.
Well, M'lord, looks like some people in the music business thinks us fans are dumb as bricks.
the boss sound much better !
Basically Ozzy Osbourne (BOSS SD-1) vs Black Label Society (MXR Wylde Overdrive)
ZW is much more harsh
Sd-1 beats wylde in every type of sound
I think they not similar at all, there is a different between them. Zakk just a little bit Chunky, and gain. Just a little not much. Zakk sound a little bit bright. Just a little. Almost same, but just a little bit different. Just a little Tiny . Not much.
Boss sd1 used along with marshall jcm800 combo by John Sykes is what zack slapped his name on with zkieth Olsen who produced white snake told Ozzy to find that bon jovi jersey poser and ill show him how to sound and play like john sykes during the ozzy audition, zacks was like (ill do it for free)
It's a placebo!
I'm sure you swapped out the circuits, and painted the real one pink in your pantry next to the Saigon cinnamon. :-/
If you are a ZW head, then buy his product. If you are a Roland head, then buy "its" product.
Live and let die...
