Boss SD-1 vs Ibanez Tube Screamer - Which One For Your Christmas List?

  • In today's video, I'm comparing the Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive with the Ibanez Tube Screamer. Both of these classic overdrive pedals do the same sort of thing but I'm going to show you why the Boss SD-1 which retails for around £60 is a better buy compared to the £120 Ibanez Tube Screamer.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

I have both of these pedals and love them. The TS is mainly used for my DR with a Strat, and the SD-1 is permanently jacked into my Studio Marshall as a boost. However sometimes I throw the TS in front of the Marshall and let it sing. Love your videos.

Love the SD-1, I have two on my board for different flavors of OD (one is modded, one stock). I use a cheap Klone (mosky silver horse) as a clean boost at the end of my gain section into an SV20, it sounds glorious!
Happy new year to the Studio Rats!

I picked up the 40th Anniversary pedal not too long ago (would have gotten the classic as well, but that's what was in stock) and I like it to get certain sounds. Definitely worth the dough. I got it specifically to goose my Marshall JMP. Toss in a dash of delay and/or chorus and it's an 80's time machine.

Couldn't agree more. The SD-1 is vastly underrated in my opinion.
I find it much more useful than a tube screamer, even though they're similar. There's something the TS adds that I just don't care for.
Anyone looking for it to push the mids, just take a look at the mid knob on your amp and give it turn clockwise 😄
I also highly recommend the spark boost. I have the full size, which I got for the price of the mini during a sale at Sweetwater, and it's amazing. It has a level and gain knob, a bass and treble knob, and a 3-way mode switch with clear/mid/fat, which gives tons of tonal variation.
Can use it as a straight clean boost, or frankly use it as a TS replacement all on its own. I prefer to use it to push my other drive pedals like you're doing here though, or just to rough up a good clean tone.

Wow! I actually just learned something from this video lol! I’ve been playing professionally for some years and I’ve always used a distortion pedal and a tubescreamer afterwards because that’s what everyone does for the most part. I had no clue I could just use a boost pedal and my OD of choice. You can set ya amp a lil dirty to get some dirt for stage 1, kick on the boss for rhythm and kick the boost for solos…definitely a great option. This will help me make more money now. Lol! Thank you!

I play a Marshall JCM 900 and a JCM 2000 and both I run through a Friedman Buxom boost and then I switch out between a boss sd1, Mosky Silver Horse, and a Behringer vintage tube overdrive 0800. I play simple 90's Era pop and skate punk (all rhythm) so nothing fancy but I like messing with different tones. Each pedal work's well with the amps OD channel but if I want a super saturated sound I'll combine either OD pedal with the Friedman and it kicks it up a notch. I think what gets me the most high gain saturation is the Mosky Silver Horse believe or not. Also that Mini Spark works really nicely for bass, I was running a Hartke LH500 head with a Hartke preamp pedal and then the Spark and man did it make that amp sound nice, now I run a Gallien-Kruger RB700 paired with an MXR Bass DI preamp

I replaced this couple of pedals alternatively with a SuperSigna from CmatMods: a great double OD/Boost pedal, 3 clipping modes, 3 band EQ, independent Boost. For me, it's the holy grail of pedals: if there's only one, that's the one I would keep. In fact I have 2 just in case anything goes wrong, as these are not being produced anymore.

The SD-1 just sounds so much raunchier and more alive even though the difference is kinda subtle, the TS seems to filter off the end subtley(or maybe the Asymmterical clipping generates a little more high end) and a bit too much low end - great for a specific kinda almost lo-fi effect but you can kinda get that with the SD-1 with the tone knob up. Maybe in a mix I'd have more trouble telling them apart(aside from the extra gain) but played like this you'd have a much easier time selling me the SD-1 as an actual amp or ironically, tube-based.
The SD-1 rules for "Classic Metal", it was the one pedal that worked with my Vox AC4TV back when I had one too, and also helping get those QOTSA vibes

The funny thing is , The first Overdrive pedal I ever bought was a Boss sd-1. Much Later I bought a cheap ( TO-800 ) and oddly I just found out they sound pretty similar. The TO 800 has a different thing for spicing up cleans with a very small amount of drive that the ad-1 just does not do but when the drive is up they are almost the same and I also have the Tc Boost so this was extra cool for me. I happen to have a fuzz pedal that is in the way..but it turns out that when the sustain is turned way down it also has a nice overdrive sound that mix's well with my normal set up.

There's a lot of folks here that apparently don't understand what a Tube Screamer is used for. It should be used to either push you amp, or pair with your favorite overdrive to push it so your solos to cut through the mix with the midrange hump. It gives just enough extra magic to make your tone sing. Other drives can pull it off, but he Tube Screamer is famed for doing it so well. SRV, John Mayer, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Marcus King, Gary Moore, and on and on. It's personal preference really. What do your ears like. Dude here could ditch that spark, and put the Tube Screamer in front of the SD-1. I guarantee it would yeild a good result.

In the last 35 years, I don't think I've ever had a pedalboard without the TS9 at the beginning of the chain set drive to zero and level to maximum....I also have the Boss Sd-1 that I bought in 1989 used...but I've always preferred the smootie tone of the TS9.

In reality the two pedals are not exactly the same. Change the cut: -Boss-sd-1=asymmetrical.
    -Ibanez Ts-9= symmetrical.
The ibanez ts-9 holds the bass more when you twist the tone knob than the boss sd-1.
In my opinion the choice depends on the genre you play and above all on the type of amplifier you have.
In my opinion on Fender amps, the ibanez ts-9 sounds much better than the boss sd-1.
