- Join me as we make this thick Hot Pad that's easy to crochet and protects your hands and surfaces from hot pans! These beginner friendly crochet hot pads are double thick so you won't need to join 2 together like you usually need to for real heat protection. For these quick and easy crochet hot pads we're going to use the Half Double Crochet to crochet the Thermal Stitch, and I'll walk you through all the steps. These pot holders are awesome to gift or sell at markets! Whip up a few in different colors for a fun weekend project!

Under "More Fun Crochet" below, I've added a video that helps you change color and add in more yarn.
I used Bernat Handicrafter Yarn to make my Hot Pads. Both Bernat and Lily Sugar n Cream are linked Below.
My Hot Pads are 7" x 7".
You will need 1 skein of Bernat Handicrafter for Each Hot Pad of this size because they are thicker than usual. I used about 70.56 yds for my hot pad. Each skein was about 84 yds, so I had a little yarn left over. If you make them bigger, you will need more yarn.
Pro Tip: The same number of stitches can give you a longer or shorter width based on how tight or loose you're crocheting. For this project, don't worry about stitch count. Crochet the stitches as tight or loose as you're comfortable with and just crochet a width you like.

Very clear instructions with clear visual aids! Thank you! 35 years ago, my 90-year-old neighbor gave me 2 potholders made with this stitch. I always loved them and have been looking for this stitch to make new ones. Thank you from an always beginner crochet-er!

Mine never looks right. I’m a total beginner and can not figure out how to make it look the same.
If you're a total beginner, this stitch might be challenging because we're doing 2 rows at once. Try my Waffle Stitch Hot Pads for a fun stitch that is definitely easier than these. I'll link it below. Also, there are other stitches that are fun but easier for new beginners that work for hot pads and washcloths, like the lemon peel stitch. I'll also link my bookmark tutorial because you can just chain more chains and turn it into a hot pad and that one is super beginner friendly.
